Ilechukwu told the News men that his team had been playing their continental competition matches without their star players and this has been the team’s biggest challenge.

He said on Friday that there was an urgent need to register the star players in order to do better in the upcoming matches, especially against Djoliba of Mali.

“We will do very well if our star players are registered with CAF for the competition.

“It is unfortunate that many of the clubs in the competition can afford to register new players and we cannot. This situation will affect our competitiveness, and that is why we are where we are,” Ilechukwu said.

CAF Champions League: MFM FC beat AS Bamako to reach 2nd round

MFM FC of Lagos on Wednesday booked their way to the second round of the CAF Champions League with a 1-0 win over AS Bamako of Mali in Lagos.

The Fidelis Ilechukwu-tutored team had played 1-1 away at Bamako giving them the needed edge for the second leg at the newly refurbished Soccer Temple, Agege Stadium.

“The team can only get better and by God’s grace we will not let our fans down and the loving government of Lagos State led by Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode.

“I am also impressed with the leader of the team’s attitude and good command of the game, he always speaks my mind as a player.

“The introduction of Abayomi is key to the team because he approached me with confidence and promised to give a good account of himself and he did not disappoint,’’ he said.

  • FIDELIS ILECHUKWU -My love for Mourinho is deep

FIDELIS ILECHUKWU -My love for Mourinho is deep

Fidelis Ilechukwu, head coach of Mountain of Fire Football Team (MFM), is not one to lie low for too long. Drama, he believes is part of the game and he loves to take it to theatric level when the occasion calls. Watching him marshal his boys at training sessions at the MFM sandy pitch, gives one a better understanding of the 39-year gaffer, who is at the forefront of the latest surge in Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL).

This is MFM second season in the Nigeria prime league and they have beaten top teams like champions Rangers International, Rivers Angel and El-Kanemi, and cruising home to a comfortable finish.

Ilechukwu, who is also the youngest coach in NPFL, loves to raise his voice and shepherd his boys in the most dramatic fashion. “I love the drama of the game and since I am a dramatic person myself I can’t lie low and not talk or move around. My players must feel me and I have to galvanise them with passion. Football is a passionate game and my job is to connect to my players and direct that passion to the right way. I must say that it has been working for us and why should I stop doing what’s been bring result.”

Ilechukwu can be remembered for his flag-to-flag sideline run to celebrate his side’s showstopper opener against Rangers International at the Agege Stadium last month. The goal, adjudged CNN Goal of the Week in March, got Ilechukwu racing to join his players. He flew off his line like a bullet in wild celebration, but for his dark suit, he would have blended nicely as one of the players. “That is who I am and I can’t change that… I’m a believer….before that game I told my players to just be themselves and go out and play their game. When I see a great goal, I have to celebrate it and that goal by (Sikiru) Olatunbosun is indeed one of the best I have ever seen. I am not surprise that CNN picked it.”

Ilechukwu’s path to coaching is even more dramatic, coming from a used cloth trader, into coaching, however claims his style is fashioned after his idol and model coach, Jose Mourinho. ‘I love José Mourinho because he is someone who turns nothing into something. I love drama in football and Mourinho gives plenty of that. You know with Mourinho, there is never a dull moment. He always has something to say before and after every game. He motivates me and I don’t mind been called after him”

“I don’t know how to hide my feelings and I love to talk the talk.” Once, last season he told his players that MFM FC management has given me an ultimatum to win at least two out of the remaining three games to galvanise them. The problem, MFM management did not. “That is my own way of motivating my players to give all,” he explained.

Ilechukwu speaks on many other issues in this interview with Taiwo Alimi.

    Beginning

I’ve always loved coaching but as an Igbo-man (from Eastern region of Nigeria), I got into business first. I used to buy and sell used clothes and other apparel, but one day I just quit and gathered young boys teaching them on how to play football. That was what I was doing when a pastor with MFM, who has been watching me, invited me to come and manage their team.

We started from the scratch, but I got the support of all at MFM and we did well by winning all the grassroots trophies in Lagos. There are times when the heat was so much that I nearly quit, but the club management would prevail on me to stay. That is history now because we have weathered the storm to get to NPFL and in just our second, we are not doing badly.

    Maiden NPFL season

We came into the season to prove that we are not pushovers but things did not work as we expected. I realised that NPFL is tougher than imagined. We became complacent after winning two games and that got into head of my boys. They thought they have arrived and when the draws and loses followed, they could not manage it well. Aside that, I was not fully in charge of the team, a lot of interference and at a point I wanted to walk back to my (Okrika) used cloth dealer business, but some people I respect a lot prevailed on me. Once we escaped relegation, I spoke my mind and the players spoke out too. The issues were addressed and coming back in the new season, it was like coming back on a clean slate, and the result is there for all to see. It is still a long short but we have proved that we can go all the way.

    League champion shot

After we defeated Rivers United at home, we jumped to the top of the league and I actually said I wished the league could end now. I said that based on my sincere belief that we can occupy that space at the end of it all. We are second on the log now, but it is still a long shot and we have to keep our head down and take it one match at a go. By God grace, we shall conquer.

    Role model and Style

I learnt at the feet of Coach Nduka Ugbade. He is my chief motivator and he is my father and a mentor too. He taught me many things and everything I learnt from him is working for me. That I am still at this job today is because of his encouragement. My style of coaching is charismatic and it is something I learnt from José Mourinho, who I considered to be the best in the world. I love José Mourinho because he is someone who turns nothing into something. I love drama in football and Mourinho gives plenty of that. You know with Mourinho, there is never a dull moment. He always has something to say before and after every game. I don’t know how to hide my feelings and I love to talk the talk. That is my own way of motivating my players to give all.

I love the drama of the game and since I am a dramatic person myself, I can’t lie low and not talk or move around. My players must feel me and I have to galvanise them with passion. Football is a passionate game and my job is to connect to my players and direct that passion to the right way. I must say that it has been working for us and why should I stop doing what’s been bring result.

That I am young is also a plus for me. It is to relate with the players. I have a cordial relationship with all of them and they look forward to training on a daily basis. It’s always important to have a good relationship with the players. It is not money alone that you can use to motivate the players. Getting close to them and knowing their problems can go a long way in raising their performance. I always give my players room to say their minds whenever they are not happy but it is must be done with discipline. I play with my players. That is who I am and I can’t change that. I’m a believer and that is why I celebrate well with them when they score. It is another motivation technique. Before that game against Rangers, I told my players to just be themselves, go out, and play their game. When I see a great goal, I have to celebrate it and that goal by (Sikiru) Olatunbosun, is indeed one of the best I have ever seen. I am not surprise that CNN picked it.

After what happened to us last season, we have fashioned out a way to maintain good discipline and it is a matter of getting to be in charge and been close to your players. I had that challenge last time and it means I am under pressure to prove that my style could work given the full support from management and devoid of interference. I want to prove some people wrong. We want to put players there because they merited it not to curry favours and so far, it is working out the magic and we would continue that way.

    Aspiration

I want to be the best in this chosen career. I’m with MFM today, but I won’t be here forever. I aspire to coach bigger teams and one-day work with the national team. That is one of my aspirations. I want to give myself and prove that I have what it takes to achieve at the biggest stage.

  • ‘I’ll have failed if MFM FC doesn’t make top three’

‘I’ll have failed if MFM FC doesn’t make top three’

Head coach of MFM FC, Fidelis Ilechukwu, said that it would be a failure on his part if the club failed to make one of the top three positions in the league this season.

Ilechukwu disclosed this in a telephone interview with newsmen on Wednesday.

Recall that MFM FC of Lagos is currently third on the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) log, with 30 points from 17 matches.

“If MFM doesn’t make top three, for me is a failure. It’s a failure to me as a coach because I am not playing mind games this time around.

“I have to be very straightforward and truthful concerning that.

“I know that MFM is going to make top three. I am sure of that.’’

Similarly, the Olukoya Boys were beaten 4-0 in a Match Day 17 fixture against Nasarawa United on Sunday.

MFM went into the game confident, after defeating Abia Warriors 2-1 on March 29, but surprisingly went down by four goals in Nasarawa.

“It was a very tough game. Our plan was to go there and get the three points, but unfortunately, we conceded too early and the game plan changed.

“The players did their best and this is why I don’t want to shift the blame to the players because they did very well, but unfortunately, their performance was not rewarded,” he said.

Ilechukwu, however, said he was looking to this weekend’s home fixture against second- placed, El Kanemi Warriors.

He said: “I am expecting a tough game because El Kanemi Warriors are on a high after defeating Kano Pillars 1-0 at home.

“They will want to come with that determination of building on their victory and continuing on a winning run.

“But following our loss to Nasarawa United, we also will be determined to bounce back,’’ he said.

  • We did not bargain for loss — MFM Coach

We did not bargain for loss — MFM Coach

Lagos-based MFM Technical Adviser, Fidelis Ilechukwu, on Monday said that his team got what they did not bargain for in their scandalous 0-4 defeat to Nasarawa United in Lafia on Sunday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that MFM were whitewashed by Nasarawa United in the Match Day 17 of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

It was, however, the turn of Nasarawa United to take their pound of flesh on MFM from whom they suffered two defeats during their last encounter in the 2015/2016 NPFL.

Olayinka Onaolapo’s cross was nodded in by Adamu Hassan in the 45th minutes to give Nasarawa United the first goal which ended the half by a lone goal.

MFM conceded another in the 61st minute when Olayinka Onaolapo slotted home, while Anthony Oussou made it three and Bashir Abdulrahman added to the goal feast in the 86th minutes to complete the routing.

However, MFM had defeated Nasarawa United in the opening game of the 2015/2016 season by 2-1 in Lafia after which they defeated them in the return fixture in Agege by same margin in the Match Day 21fixture.

On the poor performance by his youthful team, Ilechukwu said that the result was what he had no idea of how it came about.

“I am sincerely short of words for the game; the game didn’t go as planned. What happened was not our intention.

“I have watched some games before and I can say that we did not plan to lose with such margin. I don’t have any words for the loss.

“Maybe the players are tired or we had a bad day, the players know better. We were outplayed by all standards.

“Maybe next time we will try better and not lose focus,’’ he said.

Nasarawa United coach, Kabiru Dogo said he was happy to have avenged MFM’s double header defeat last season.

“They have the upper hand against us last season. We didn’t want to lose again this season. We put in everything to avoid what happened last season.

“We know MFM plays very well in the first half and fade out in the second half, so we tried to stop them from playing in the first half.

“As soon as the first half was over, I knew we had done it,’’ he said.

“We started slowly this season. Now the team is jelling at the right time. I am happy with the boys’ performance. Every coach will be proud of these boys,’’ he said.

  • MFM strong enough to match Enyimba – Coach

MFM strong enough to match Enyimba – Coach

As the Lagos-based MFM FC tackles Enyimba FC of Aba for their Match Day 13, the Technical Adviser, Fidelis Ilechukwu says his wards are strong enough to match seven-time Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) champions.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that NPFL Match 13, between the Olukoya Boys and the Peoples Elephant will take place at the U.J. Esuene Stadium on Saturday in Calabar.

Previous meetings in the 2015/2016 fixtures between MFM FC and the Aba-based club had all ended in a draw.

The Church Boys are currently fifth on the NPFL table with 19 points from 10 league games. They won six, drew one and lost three.

Enyimba is 14th on the league table with 14 points from 11 games. The team won four matches, drew 2 and lost five.

However, MFM currently has two outstanding matches against Rivers United and Wikki Tourists, who are engaged in African Football (CAF) Champions League engagements.

The Olukoya Boys will have to test their might against a more determined side to win Enyimba in the crucial encounter.

On records, MFM have been firing from all cylinders since the beginning of the season and had performed better in their previous campaigns in the NPFL with strong wins over league’s heavy weights.

The Fidelis Ilechukwu’s side earned a point away against 3SC of Ibadan in the first South-West encounter; after which they dispatched Sunshine Stars of Akure 1-0 in Akure.

The team, however, lost 1-2 away to Kastina United in the Match Day 12 only to record a slim 1-0 win over another league debutant, Remo Stars, courtesy of Stephen Odey’s penalty.

Enyimba on the other hand, have not been impressive this season recording only four wins in the 2016/2017 campaign and a surprising 0-0 with 3SC of Ibadan in the Match Day 11 fixtures.

Baring the importance of the match, Ilechukwu believed that his side was now ripe to contest for the maximum points at stake in the weekend fixture.

“We want to replicate our fine form against Enyimba because we have not lost against them in more than five meetings, both in pre-season and NPFL.

“We played a goalless draw last season and we want to build on that in as much as I understand that there are changes in the management and that some players have left.

“Although they still have quality players, we want to maintain our status against Enyimba,’’ he said.

Ilechukwu said that the League Management Company (LMC) had done a lot to improve the league in the country; an effort he said had positively impacted on the league.

“The LMC has done so much in the NPFL. There is no more home, no more away and anybody can win anywhere.

“We have a situation where a team can either draw or lose anywhere.  As it stands now, anything can happen, this is football.

“I believe we have a strong team that can match Enyimba. So, I believe we can beat them in their home,’’ he said.

Fidelis Ilechukwu: NPFL win feels like a trophy

Mountain of Fire Miracles Ministries head coach, Fidelis llechukwu has described his side’s top-flight win against former champions, Kano Pillars, as equivalent to winning a trophy.
“The victory against Kano Pillars feels like we have won a major trophy in a keenly contested championship. The victory is quite sweet considering the quality of opposition as well as their coach, Kadiri Ikhana.
“Of course, I expected the quality of opposition exhibited by Pillars, they are a big side, they did not disappoint. They gave the game their very best, but we had the last laugh.
“Last season both sides shared the spoils but today (Sunday) we had the upper hand. I’m completely excited. I think we got our act perfectly right with a point at 3SC and a win today (Sunday) against Pillars. We are in good shape as we are yet to concede on the home ground. We will not relax but continue to work hard to earn more deserving wins in other matches,” said llechukwu to supersport.com.

    Fidelis Ilechukwu’s hails MFM’s depth

MFM head coach, Fidelis Ilechukwu has hailed the depth in the squad, following their victory over Heartland on Sunday.

“We worked hard for where we are now and we shall continue to give our best each week to make sure that we finish as high as we can at the end of the season,” Ilechukwu told Goal.

“We may be missing a couple of our players who deservedly were invited to the national U-23 team and the NPFL All Stars team,  each time they come back to the team I’ve observed that they are a bit cautious in the way they play so as not pick an injury but the beauty in the team is that there other players in the team who can step up when it matters.

“We go into every game with an intent to win and that’s what has always helped us.  God’s grace, no doubt has been massive in our performance and we shall continue with these positives till the end,”he said.
