President Bola Tinubu is expected to send a delegation to the ancient town of Ikenne-Remo in Ogun State as it hosts Ereke Day 2025 tomorrow. This year promises to be a celebration of heritage, youth empowerment, and community progress.

Also expected are Governor Dapo Abiodun, prominent traditional rulers, business leaders, and illustrious indigenes from home and abroad.

Dignitaries, cultural icons, and visitors from Nigeria and the diaspora are also expected.

Organised by Ikenne Development Association (IDA), this edition’s theme is “Unity in Culture, Strength in Heritage”. It will celebrate the town’s rich traditions, creative enterprise, and influence as a cultural and tourism hub in Southwest.

The presence of a president- ial delegation, according to the organisers, underscores Federal Government’s commitment to promoting grassroots cultural heritage and community development.

It also reflects “a historic recognition of Ereke’s place in Nigeria’s cultural evolution.” The week-long festivities will feature a cultural parade, art and craft exhibition, youth marathon, football tournament, and Miss Ereke Cultural Pageant, which honours intelligence, grace, and women empowerment. The festival will climax with a grand cultural night and awards ceremony, bringing together attendees in a celebration of unity and progress.

Beyond the displays, Ereke Day has become a platform for economic empowerment, with artisans, traders, and small businesses benefiting from influx of visitors. Hotels, transport operators, and vendors often record a rise in activity.

Olufemi Allen, president of IDA, said this edition is “a new dawn for cultural tourism in Ogun.” “Ereke Day is more than a festival; it is a symbol of our shared identity and progress,” he said.

“With the support of both state and federal institutions, we are showcasing how culture can drive unity and development.”

Established in 1976 by the Ikenne Development Association, Ereke Day has become a cultural emblem for the Remo people, symbolizing unity, tradition, and progressive community development. Over four decades later, it continues to inspire pride in heritage while driving the town’s transformation through cultural tourism, entrepreneurship, and education.

  • Udiroko Festival: From fiesta to developmental platform

Ado-Ekiti indigenes have celebrated their rich cultural heritage at the yearly Udiroko Festival, which marks the beginning of a new year in the community’s traditional calendar. This year’s festival lived up to its billing. Governor Ayo Fayose attended for the last time as governor. He leaves office in October, ODUNAYO OGUNMOLA reports.

The Udiroko Festival held yearly in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital, has become a prominent fiesta in its cultural and tourism calendar.

It marks the beginning of a new year in the Ado-Ekiti traditional calendar, which is as old as the kingdom itself.

The festival, also known as “Olorunborun”, affords the indigenes the opportunity of coming together to develop their hometown.

It offers them the opportunity of reviewing developments in the kingdom and serves as the binoculars to gaze into the New Year and agree on projects to be carried out to give the town a facelift and a touch of modernity.

Walnuts, yams and other farm produce are used to celebrate the festival to remind the people of the importance of agriculture.

In the past, Udiroko celebrated the military prowess of Ado kingdom with its war commanders showcasing the spoils of war and slaves.

But the festival has received the touch of modernity and the major thrust of Udiroko now is the issue of development of Ado Ekiti, which has grown from being a district headquarters in colonial period to a local government headquarters and now a state capital.

The indigenes and non-indigenes pay homage to the Ewi, the monarch, who is the custodian of the people’s culture.

The most glorious era in the history of Ado Ekiti is the reign of the Ewi, Oba Rufus Adeyemo Adejugbe, Aladesanmi III, who ascended the throne in 1990.

The monarch has used the Udiroko to rally indigenes and non-indigenes to ensure massive development of the kingdom in infrastructure, commerce, education, social development and elevation of royalty to higher spheres of influence.

Some key projects include the Faculty of Law building at Ekiti State University, Palace Amphitheatre, Palace Hall, official king’s quarters in the palace, and the new Erekesan (Oba’s) Market,, which is nearing completion.

This year’s Udiroko was chaired by eminent lawyer and Founder AfeBabalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Aare Afe Babalola.

The Ado-Ekiti anthem was launched and relayed at the festival. It will be sung in public functions in the kingdom.

It was marked with a week-long of activities, which culminated in the grand finale held at the palace square with a massive crowd of people sitting in the terraces and under canopies provided to protect them from the rays of the sun.

Residents defied the rains that pounded all parts of Ado Ekiti that day and thronged the palace to enjoy the diet of culture on parade. As the festival wore on, they stayed in the arena to the end.

The festival enjoyed the patronage of Nigeria Breweries and MTN Nigeria with the products of the two corporate organisations made available for attendees.

Apart from the activities going on within the palace grounds, the youths swarmed round Fuji musician at the palace gate dancing enthusiastically to the music.

The traditional chiefs, honorary chiefs, market women, youths, age group organisations were all resplendent in their colourful attires.

The value added to the town by Udiroko was the motivating factor that drew a crowd to this year’s edition where Governor Ayo Fayose was marking his final appearance in office as he bows out on October 15.

There was an ovation as Fayose entered the arena at 3.19 pm with the shout of his nickname “Osoko” by the appreciative crowd who acknowledged that he did much for the town with his projects.

Fayose said the projects executed by his administration would continue to speak for him long after he might have left office.

He praised the people of Ado-Ekiti for their support during his tenure, which he claimed resulted in construction of legacy projects in the city.

The Ewi received homage from traditional chiefs, queens, honorary chiefs, traditional warriors, traditional police, market women, ethnic nationalities resident in the town and other interest groups.

The palace queens (Oloris), led by the Eyesorun, Olori Margaret Bosede Adejugbe, added colour to the festival with their eye-catching dance steps and the traditional drums they carried and beat

Fayose, a honorary chief, paid a special homage to Ewi and prayed that “Ado will not receive an unwanted visitor”.

He promised to allocate shops to market women displaced by the construction of the new Erekesan Market, including “pepper and vegetable sellers”.

The governor said: “I will give the shops back to the poor people who are interested in them and this will be backed with valid documents.

“The pepper sellers, the vegetable sellers will regain their shops back.

“I gave you my word that I will perform and work for you and to the glory of God, I have performed.

“To the glory of God, I came, I saw and conquered; I came, I saw and I conquered.

“Very soon, I will roll out the timetable for a tour round the state to say thank you to the people.

“Even if Eleka (Olusola) had been declared winner, I will still go. Don’t fight with anybody, continue to sing the song of praise.

“By the grace of God, the glory and plunder of Zion shall be returned.”

The shops had since been given out to the needy market women by Fayose in fulfillment of the promise.

Ado-Ekiti Local Government Chairman, Mr. Clement Bamisile and caretaker President of Ado Progressives Union (APU) stressed the importance of community development. He urged indigenes to always unite and lift their community to make it an envy of others in Ekiti and other parts of the country.

Babalola described Udiroko as a veritable platform for the people  to remember the traditions of their ancestors.

He, however, expressed regret that some events he described as “enemies of progress” had eroded the great virtues of Ekiti.

Babalola decried the upsurge in criminal activities in the state such as robbery, daylight killings, stealing, destruction of property and kidnapping which he said were alien to Ekiti.

10m to grace One Lagos Fiesta

•Davido, Olamide, KSA, Ayuba, others brace up

One Lagos Fiesta (OLF) will arguably be the biggest and the largest celebration in Nigeria with a record of 10 million people in attendance, Special Adviser to the Governor on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs. Aramide Giwanson, has said.

According to her, the OLF will turn the five divisions of Lagos into a tourist destination for eight days non-stop.

These are: Ikeja (Agege Stadium), Badagry (Badagry Grammar School), Ikorodu (Ikorodu Town Hall), Lagos Island (Bar Beach) and Epe (Epe-Marina Beachfront).

The cross over night to usher in the New Year 2018 on the night of December 31 will hold at the Eko Atlantic City.

It will showcase not less than 40 concerts across the city and develop the local economy of the areas thereby making it self-sustaining during the festive period and after, Mrs Giwanson added.

A-list artistes, including multi award winning artistes, Davido, Olamide, King Sunny Ade and other music stars will mount the stage across five different locations to thrill fun seekers.

Veteran musicians like King Sunny Ade, Adewale Ayuba, Salawa Abeni, Ras Kimono, Pasuma and Osupa are also listed for action in the eight days non-stop fiesta.

The event, she said, is the flagship yuletide revue of the Lagos State Government, also known as One Lagos Fiesta (OLF).

Tagged See, Feel and Explore Lagos, Giwanson assured residents that adequate preparations have been made to guarantee safety and security of participants.

She said traffic management officials have also been mobilised to ensure free flow of traffic throughout the eight days.

According to her, the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Traffic Management Agency (LASTMA), Rapid Response Squad (RRS) of the Lagos State Police Command and other related agencies have been fully briefed on preventing any chaos or break down of law and order.

  • Ambode, One Lagos Fiesta and T.H.E.S.E

In contrast to Napoleon Bonaparte, who once said that “the best way to keep one’s word is not to give it”, an uncompromising penchant for keeping his word has become the trademark of Lagos State Governor, Akinwunmi Ambode.

One of his most consistent campaign promises was to ensure that Lagos becomes the tourism and entertainment hub of Africa. The vehicle through which he hopes to achieve this is T.H.E.S.E – an acronym for Tourism, Hospitality, Entertainment and Sporting Excellence. With the global drop in oil prices and the resultant economic downturns which our country currently experiences, the pursuit of T.H.E.S.E. is, indeed, a strategic platform for the much needed economic diversification. Since his assumption in office, Governor Ambode has left no one in doubt about his resolve to grow the Lagos economy and empower the youth through several alternative means which include the tactical promotion of tourism, entertainment and sports.

Towards this end, Lagos has played host to quite a number of global and continental entertainment events. One of such is an evening of Jazz which the governor hosted in commemoration of 2016 International Jazz Day. Equally, the City of Lagos beat other major African cities to the hosting right of 2016 AFRIMA. Similarly, a one of its kind Lagos Street Party was held in 2016 while Lagos equally posted a remarkable showing at the 2016 edition of Nottingham and Toronto Carnivals. At the Toronto Carnival in particular, eight films by Lagos State-based filmmakers were selected for red-carpet premieres and screenings. Think of the mileage that this gives to Lagos and all the filmmakers not only in terms of publicity but business opportunities and exposure on such massive global platform.

Governor Ambode’s tenacity in the advancement of T.H.SE.S.E is a reflection of his massive passion for the arts.  It will be recollected that during the campaign, music in particular, played a major role in the campaign train that brought the Governor into office. There were quite a number of artistes who were referred to as ‘Ambode ambassadors’, who supported his aspirations and dreams, which assisted him in giving the best communication campaign ever that would see a governor winning an election in Nigeria. Till date, the governor remains a major rally point for both established and budding national entertainers.

In a bid to further concretize the plan to transform Lagos into an entertainment nucleus, in 2015 the Ambode administration expanded the scope of the annual Lagos Countdown, an event with which the state government ushers in the New Year. Now renamed One Lagos Fiesta, OLF, the 2016 edition which was on course for seven days clearly lived up to expectations as the euphoria it created is yet to wane, and excusably so.

As it was the case in 2015, the event held concurrently across the five major divisions of the state viz- a -viz at Agege, Epe, Badagry, Ikorodu and Lagos Island. The plan is to guarantee that every part of the state was given the opportunity to have a taste of the stimulating experience. It is in further accomplishment of Ambode’s pledge to run an all-inclusive government in which every segment of the society is not left out in the scheme of things. Indeed, one of the core objectives of the OLF was to foster unity among all classes and groups of people in Lagos. This is quite imperative in view of the multi-ethnic and mixed religion character of Lagos which has made the metropolis to be termed a ‘mini Nigeria’. Certainly, the inevitability for unity in such a multi-ethnic metropolis as Lagos cannot be overstressed.

A major unique trait of the 2016 edition of OLF was the profound participation of the private sector. In order to mirror the philosophy of the Ambode administration, the seven–day long event had sufficient private sector interest. This is a deliberate strategy by the state government to fully involve the private sector in the grand scheme to make Lagos the destination of choice for diverse people across the world. In doing this, the state government is just toeing a well-established and rewarding universal path. In adopting this strategy, government is not abdicating its responsibilities but essentially releasing scarce resources for other equally important projects thus creating a win-win situation for the government and the private enterprise as well. The participation of corporate sponsors such as GLO, NBL, MIKANO and others helped turn the fiesta into a massive entertainment project, whose memory will be cherished by many Lagosians for a long time.

One other key highlight of the fiesta was its perfect security arrangement. That such a massive event was held across five different locations in the state without any security breach is a reflection of the impact of the state government’s massive investment in public security. From the outset, the vision of the Ambode administration is to make Lagos Africa’s Model Megacity and Global Economic and Financial Hub. This can only become a reality if every minute of the 24 hours in a day could be properly harnessed in a secured and safer environment. This explains why most cities that operate 24/7 economy place immense emphasis on getting the security right. A major defining act of the state government since June 2015 is the strengthening of security mechanism in the state through the purchase and deployment of surveillance helicopters, utility and operational vehicles, power bikes, armoured tanks and others worth billions of naira to the state Police Command.   Till date, the governor and his team are not looking back in the onerous task of ensuring a safe and secured Lagos where investors get adequate returns on their investments.

The 2016 OLF further provided a boost for the attainment of T.H.E.S.E. in the state as the entertainment and tourism sectors received extensive momentum for growth courtesy high demand for related services and products during and after the event. Entertainment spots that were close to the locations of the event actually cashed in on its economic impact. In terms of empowerment, the event created over 10,000 direct and indirect jobs for diverse professionals who were engaged in sundry aspects such as publicity, lightning, engineering, decoration, carpentry, welding, painting, catering etc.

Similarly, with over 50 local artistes on hand to perform at the event, both budding and established artistes were availed the platform to up their act and directly connect with their fans. This has helped a lot of them to pep up their fan base. Indeed, some new artistes that were discovered prior to the main event were given the opportunity to share the stage with renowned stars such as King Sunny Ade, Ebenezer Obey, Queen Salawa Abeni, Dr. Adewale Ayuba, Sir. Sina Peters, Haruna Ishola Jnr, Tiwa Savage, Phyno, Falz, Olamide, Dr. Sid, Olu Maintain, Big Sheff and a host of others.

Now, what does 2017 holds for T.H.E.S.E? 2017, no doubt, would further provide a huge boost for the promotion of Ambode administration’s T.H.E.S.E. policy thrust.  With all hands on deck for the state’s Golden Jubilee anniversary later this year, the art, entertainment, tourism and other such related sectors are, once again, in for a great deal.

The Proprietress of the school, Mrs Funmi Adesegun, said the reason for the sport fiesta was to develop the pupils.

“Exercise helps their body to develop its competitive nature; team play and allows them to relax. Hidden talents can also come out this way; they can make a career out of this too,” she said.

In her lecture, the guest speaker, Prof Ajike Osanyin of the University of Lagos, (UNILAG), who spoke on: Building morals in children: A tool for building the nation, said parents should endeavour to expose their wards to positive things because an individual makes use of the exposure available to them.

She advised them not to give in to their children as it would make them develop a bad character.

“Don’t always bail your child out of trouble or replace items they,” she added.

The Father of the Day, and Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Prince Segun Adesegun, said pupils own the future.

Prince Adesegun, who is the husband of the proprietress, said when she had the dream of starting a school a decade ago, he did not think it was possible.

“I told her it could not work. I did not encourage her. As a politician, we were not always at home so I didn’t believe she could combine it with house work,” he said.

He congratulated the staff, adding that during his tour of the school, he observed that there was inter-personal relationship among the teachers, parents and pupils.
