World Cup Qualifiers: Cameroon should not be written off, Owolabi cautions

Former Green Eagles wing forward Felix Owolabi on Wednesday in Lagos warned that the Indomitable Lions of Cameroon should not be written off.

Owolabi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) there should be no room for complacency in spite of Cameroon’s poor outing at the ongoing FIFA Confederations Cup competition in Russia.

He warned that the Super Eagles would likely meet a more determined opponent in Cameroon during the 2018 World Cup qualifier in Uyo in August.

“The competition has served as a kind of training for the African champions, even though they didn’t go far in the tournament, but they were resilient.

“In all of their matches, you can see they weren’t going to back down. It was always a do-or-die situation. They played like it was going to be their last match.

“Not going far wasn’t good for their reputation, but they still have that never-say-die spirit. That’s the number one thing any good team needs.

“Their current form shouldn’t be a threat to us if truly we have gone back to the drawing board like the team’s technical crew promised after the last outing against Bafana Bafana of South Africa,’’ Owolabi said.

NAN reports that the Central African side played a 1-1 draw with Australia, and lost to Chile and Germany to crash out of the tournament.

Owolabi, whose Green Eagles squad won the 1980 edition of the African Cup of Nations, said the Super Eagles must be thoroughly prepared for the Indomitable Lions.

“I’m sure the handlers of Super Eagles are paying attention, and I hope they learnt from our last match against South Africa.

“Experience can never be bought. A good team that will stand the test of time is a blend of young and old. Experience is everything, we shouldn’t ignore that.

“As for the method of elimination by substitution, it should be a gradual thing. You just don’t change the composition of the team overnight,’’ he said.

Sanchez breaks Chile scoring record in Germany draw

Alexis Sanchez became Chile’s all-time leading scorer when he grabbed an early goal in their 1-1 draw with Germany at the FIFA Confederations Cup on Thursday in Russia.

Lars Stindl equalised for the world champions just before halftime although the game petered out in the second half as the high-octane Chileans appeared to run out of gas.

The result left both teams level at the top of Group B with four points each from their opening two games, although Chile have the better goal difference.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Australia and Cameroon have a point apiece after their 1-1 draw earlier on Thursday.

The top two teams go through to the semi-finals and there is one round of matches in the group on Sunday, with Germany facing Cameroon and Chile playing Australia.

Sanchez’s goal was his 38th for Chile in 113 appearances as he overtook the previous scoring record held by Marcelo Salas.

Germany, now unbeaten in 12 games since their Euro 2016 semi-final exit, gifted Chile a sixth-minute lead when Shkodran Mustafi attempted to play the ball out of defence.

He sent his pass straight to Sanchez who played a one-two with Vidal and toe-poked the ball in off the post.

The referee poured cold water on Chile’s goal celebrations by appearing to call for a video reply, possibly to look at a scything tackle by Mustafi on Vidal, although the goal was quickly confirmed.

Defender Matthias Ginter made a similar mistake soon after but was let off the hook as Germany struggled to cope with the South American side’s high pressing and quick passing.

Chile came close to a second when Eduardo Vargas rattled the underside of the bar with a long-range drive and Sanchez continued to pester them with his marauding runs down the left.

But Germany equalised against the run of play four minutes before halftime when Stindl turned the ball home from close range after Emre Can’s diagonal pass had sent Jonas Hector free on the left to fire a low cross into the middle.

Germany goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen then had to make a one-handed save at his near post to block a low drive from 28-year-old Arsenal forward Sanchez just before the break.

The second half was much quieter with Stindl producing Germany’s best effort, a low shot saved by Johnny Herrera.

  • Russia 2017: Semi-final hopes in jeopardy as Australia, Cameroon draw 1-1

Russia 2017: Semi-final hopes in jeopardy as Australia, Cameroon draw 1-1

Australia fought back to draw 1-1 with Cameroon in the FIFA Confederations Cup on Thursday, a result which further dented both teams’ hopes of progressing in the tournament in Russia.

Andre Anguissa put Cameroon ahead with the last touch of the first half, but a Mark Milligan penalty kick on the hour mark ensured a first point for both in Group B.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Australia will play Chile in Moscow on Sunday and Cameroon will face Germany at the same time in Sochi in their final group games.

Yet the chances of both the African and Asian champions finishing in the top two and progressing to the semi-finals at the eight-team tournament look slim.

Germany and Chile, who faced each other later on Thursday, both have three points.

Australia and Cameroon were meeting for the first time and traded free kicks in the opening 20 minutes but it took until the 37th minute for either to create an opening.

Australia goalkeeper Matt Ryan was called into action after a smart one-two between Cameroon captain Benjamin Moukandjo and striker Vincent Aboubakar allowed the former to fire at goal.

The African champions ended the first half with a succession of corner kicks and then opened the scoring with the last kick before the break.

A long ball out of defence bounced over Aboubakar but Zambo Anguissa’s deft touch steered it past the on-rushing Ryan.

The Olympique de Marseille midfielder, who spurned a call-up to play for Cameroon when they won the African Nations Cup in Gabon at the start of the year, missed out on a second in the first 10 minutes of the second half.

Australia levelled on the hour mark when Ernest Mabouka brought down Alex Gersbach to concede a penalty kick, after Serbian referee Milorad Mazic consulted the Video Assistant.

Stand-in skipper Milligan stepped up and converted from the penalty kick spot.

Mabouka sought to make amends with a strong run down the right in the 65th minute before he teed up Aboubakar right in front of goal, but the burly striker lifted the ball over the crossbar.

Aboubakar then headed over from a similar position with 12 minutes remaining.

After the match, Cameroon coach Hugo Broos said it was unfortunate that striker Aboubakar had an off-day.

“This is the life of a front player, sometimes you score with your eyes closed and sometimes you miss chances you can’t afford to miss,” the coach told reporters.

“Today was a bit unlucky for him… that can happen. It’s a pity for us that it happened today.

“The chances were there but we didn’t score, and then you don’t win the game

FIFA Confederations Cup: Mexico came from behind to beat New Zealand

Mexico scored twice in a busy second-half performance to overcome New Zealand 2-1 and destroy the All Whites’ dreams of securing their first Confederations Cup victory at the 11th attempt.

New Zealand had the better of the first half on Wednesday at the Fisht Stadium in Socchi, Russia and went 1-0 up thanks to a nice goal from Chris Wood.

But Mexico stormed back after the break and Raul Jimenez got the equaliser nine minutes into the second period of the Group A match.

Javier Aquino dribbled in from the left and after an exchange of passes on the edge of the New Zealand box, Jimenez spun to fire high into the net.

Mexico took control of the game and Oribe Peralta grabbed the winner from close range after 72 minutes when he swept home another incisive cross from Aquino.

Mexico ended the day as Group A leaders with four points, ahead of Portugal on goal difference.

Hosts Russia are in third with three points and New Zealand have none.

In continuation of their 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup campaign, all four sides return on Saturday to see whether they will advance to the semi-finals.

Russia will face Mexico, needing a win to be sure of progress with a draw being sufficient for their opponents, while Portugal are expected to beat New Zealand to top the group.

  • The Song of the Super Eagles

The Song of the Super Eagles

We arrived in Brazil as the Champions of Africa, the continent’s pride.

We travelled to Belo Horizonte and they draped us in flowers, celebrated our failings and cheered the every touch of our lowly opponents.

In Salvador—the capital of happiness—our hopes were curtailed by a veteran’s thunderbolt.

Then, the foray to Fortaleza, and a contest with the champions of Europe, the champions of the World, a team one day to be revered among the finest the universe has ever produced.

The narrative has been reversed; the crushing victory against Pacific minnows was greeted with indifference and inevitability, the narrow defeat to the Celeste of Uruguay met with shrugs of respect and respectability, and the 3-0 loss to Spain cradled by gushing glory and a renewed sense of belonging.

Only in the darkest of defeats, the confirmation of elimination has the world begun to believe in Stephen Keshi’s mission and the Super Eagles’ place at the international high table.

Against La Roja in Ceara State we met many familiar but forgotten figures of the African game; they were all there.

Ahmed Musa was the bright young thing, the prodigal talent, blessed with pace and promise, but lacking the noblest of all the virtues, a mind to capitalise on his twinkling toes.

John Obi Mikel was the talismanic hero. The midfield general, an absence lamented since the departure of Sunday Oliseh; spraying passes, prompting attacks and driving his side forward. They tell me that during the group stage no player completed as many passes in the final third of the pitch as the Chelsea man.

There was Vincent Enyeama, the final stand, the last line of defence, consistently strong, consistently resolute, but ultimately unable to cull the calculated offense that came his way.

In these men we recognised figures we have come to know and adore over the last 12 months, men who carried the Eagles to South Africa, who claimed a continent’s crown, and who were so defiant in defeat here at the Confederations Cup.

Dreams of the semifinal depart unrealised, but optimism is rife following such a bold defeat. Nigerians are now looking forwards, not towards a knock-out clash with Brazil, but towards a summer of promise back in this land of carnival and protest.

This competition may have ended in disappointment and elimination, but Keshi and his collective have made the most of their opportunity to demonstrate their burgeoning talents before a global audience.

Certainly, the attack may have been at times shambolic, the forward line lacking almost any semblance of cohesion, and areas of the squad proving to be wafer thin, but against Uruguay, and particularly Spain, the side showed that they have the requisite ability to trouble the elite teams; they don’t get much more accomplished than the Champions of South America, of Europe, and of the World!

The attack is an evident area of weakness, although Nigerians can take solace in the fact that the likes of Victor Moses, Emmanuel Emenike and Kalu Uche will return from injury in due course.

Beyond them, there is a whole swathe of attacking talents plying their trade across the world who could be primed to step into the squad ahead of next summer. Keshi need never feel forced to rely on the limited abilities of Ideye Brown, Anthony Ujah and Joseph Akpala again.

It is easy to forget just how young and relatively inexperienced this side are—it was a point Keshi was keen to convey in the wake of their defeat. While Spain have played together for over half a decade, and almost all have a career’s worth of top-end experience, Nigeria still have the capacity to grow together.

The assured centre back pairing of Kenneth Omeruo and Godfrey Oboabona are just 19 and 22 respectively; the aforementioned Musa and the absent defensive midfielder Ogenyi Onazi are only 20, while talented forwards Victor Moses and Nnamdi Oduamadi are each 22 and with great scope for development.

They may have received criticism from some quarters following their stuttering victory over Tahiti, but in defeat, perhaps paradoxically, the Super Eagles have shown that they know how to stand strong, they are capable of controlling a midfield and carving out chances, and—with a key inclusion or two up front—could well be capable of beating some of the world’s finest teams.

It will doubtless be another year of learning and development for Keshi and his young side, if they continue in their trajectory, expect them to stick around a little longer in Brazil next summer.
