    FIFA World Cup 26: Lookman, Iwobi swell Super Eagles camp

    • Match officials, Bafana Bafana  land in Uyo

    The Uyo camp of the Super Eagles is now bursting at the seams following  the  arrivals  of  Atalanta’s Europa League  hero, Ademola Lookman  as well  Fulham striker  Alex Iwobi  yesterday ahead of  tomorrow’s  2026 FIFA World Cup  qualifier against Bafana Bafana  of South Africa.

    Due to the Organised Labour’s strike on Monday, only 15 players out of the 23 listed for key Match Day 3  cracker by coach Finidi George  began training  while  the quintet of Semi Ajayi, Bright Osayi-Samuel, Calvin Bassey Frank Onyeka and Paul Onuachu only joined  the team  on Tuesday.

    Only Udinese goalkeeper Maduka Okoye  was still being expected in Uyo last night  despite  his reported arrival  in Lagos  yesterday.

    Meanwhile,  all is now set for  the Uyo showdown  between  sworn  following announcement  by the Nigeria  Football Federation  that match officials as well as the Bafana Bafana  contingent  were in for  the encounter.

    According to the NFF’s Directo of Communication, Ademola Olajire,  Okoye, the South African delegation and the match officials  were to arrive  in Uyo,  Akwa Ibom State capital yesterday.

     “Italy-based Okoye was the only invited player not in camp for lunch on Wednesday, but was already in Nigeria and booked for a flight out of the Federal Capital,” he said inter alia . “Majority of the match officials were  booked for flights out of the Federal Capital, with only referee assessor Ahmed Sayed Abou Elela from Egypt due to arrive in Nigeria  Thursday(today).”

    Super Eagles’ camp bubble in Uyo

    Ndidi, Boniface, 13 others trained

    Ahead of Friday’s FIFA World Cup 26  qualifier  against  South Africa, the Uyo camp  of the Super Eagles is  already bubbling  with no fewer than 15 players t training  yesterday.

    The tie against  the  Bafana Bafana  is a must-win  as new coach Finidi George  hope to keep the  Super Eagles’ ship   back  on track  after  the team took just two points  from their opening  two matches under  the departed Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro.

    According to the new Team Media Officer (TMO) of the Super Eagles, Promise Efoghe, 13 players  including Leicester City’s  duo of Wilfred Ndidi and  Kelechi Iheanacho  as well as the trio of Sadiq Ismael( Remo Stars),  Kenneth Igboke(Enugu Rangers),  Ojo Olorunleke (Enyimba) from  the StarTimes /Nigeria Professional Football League(NPFL) took part  in the team’s first session  yesterday  while the  duo of Awaziem and Alhassan Yussuf joined in the second session  in the evening.

    Efoghe who took over from Babafemi Raji as the senior national team’s spokesman at the weekend, added  that  the remaining  eight players being expected  included   Atalanta’s  Europa League hero Ademola Lookman  who  grabbed his 11th  Serie A goal as his side lost  3-2  in a rescheduled game against Fiorentina yesterday.
