  • Nollywood gets Emerging Market Award in Las Vegas

Official Convention of The National Association of Theatre Owners (NATO), otherwise called CinemaCon, has honoured the Nigerian movie industry with the Emerging Market Award.

Sponsored by ComScore, an American media measurement and analytics company, the recognition came to Nollywood, as movie theatre owners gathered at the Ceasars Palace, Las Vegas, U.S.A. from April 1 to April 4, 2019.

The award was received by the Nigerian delegation at the event, including members of Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN)’s Kene Okwuosa, CEO of Filmhouse Group; Moses Babatope, MD of FilmOne Production and Distribution; Jonathan Murray Bruce, Executive Director of Silverbird Group; Isabella Okechukwu, Business Manager at Silverbird Cinemas; and Executive Director of National Film and Video Censors Board (NFVCB), Mr. Adedayo Thomas.

Pundits say this award comes as no surprise, as the 2010s spelled growth for the cinema culture with various cinema brands popping up to create competition in the space for already established players.

In 2013, the country’s cinema business recorded revenues in the amount of N1.72trillion, with the industry valued at N853.9billion (third in the world after the United States and India).

As Nollywood, said to contribute 1.4% to Nigeria’s economy continues to attract foreign interest, including the move by Netflix to invest billions of dollars into the industry over the next five years, the Emerging Market Award can only be timely.

Okwuosa and Babatope have expressed their gratitude to be selected as industry leaders to receive the CinemaCon award on behalf of the Nigerian film industry.

  • Filmhouse: Kene Mkparu pre-empts sack, resigns

Following a tussle with the Board of Filmhouse and FilmOne Distribution, its CEO, Kene Mkparu, has resigned his position with both companies.

The companies confirmed this in a statement released by Filmhouse Cinemas and FilmOne Distribution and Production signed by Kene Okwuosa.

“It is with a heavy heart that I announce the decision of the Board of Directors of Filmhouse Cinemas and FilmOne Distribution and Production, to part ways with Mr. Kene Mkparu, in his position as Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of both companies,” according to the statement.

“Mr Mkparu, as we all know, was a co-founder of both companies, and instrumental in building them from scratch to becoming the leading cinema chain, theatrical distributor and production company Group in Nigeria. We are most thankful to him for this and for the opportunity to have worked with him. He was and remains a true visionary, and we wish him all the very best in his future endeavours.

“Filmhouse and FilmOne are entering a new phase, thus the Board has decided to appoint new Managing Director(s) to steer the affairs of both companies. In the meantime, I, Kene Okwuosa will function as the interim Managing Director of Filmhouse Cinemas and Moses Babatope will function as the Interim Managing Director of FilmOne Distribution and Production, pending the appointment of a substantive Managing Director.

“Contrary to some news being peddled in the public domain, the Board wishes to assure everyone that the company is in good health, and there is no cause for alarm.”

There has been a rumoured tussle among the top hierarchy of Filmhouse Cinema/FilmOne Distribution, leading to the owners of the company, African Capital Alliance weighing in in the last few months.

Mkparu had left Genesis Cinema in similar manner to co-found Filmhouse six years ago.

  • Filmhouse premieres Logan

    Filmhouse premieres Logan

As part of the activities at the just concluded Social Media Week, Filmhouse Imax Cinema, last Friday, gave away 200 tickets to movie buffs at the worldwide premiere of, Logan, the latest in the X-Men installation.
Welcoming guests to the premiere of the movie, which kicked off with a red carpet reception, Kene Mkparu, CEO of Filmhouse Cinemas and FilmOne Distribution said that the aim of the premiere is to, among other things, whip up an interest in movies among Nigerians.
“Our aim is to get more people to key into the cinema culture. It is the best way to watch a film. For those following the X-Men series, you will understand Logan. All through his life he has had a love-hate relationship with those around him. Something I’d like you to look forward to in this film is the introduction of a new character, Laura. • FILMHOUSE, FILMONE AND THE PRIVATE SECTOR INITIATIVE

ONE may want to ask why Kene Mkparu, MD/CEO of Filmhouse cinema and FilmOne Distribution is having his hands in many pies. In no time, after coming into the film distribution and exhibition business in Nigeria, after serving at the Odion Cinema in the UK, he made cinema culture less elitist by evolving competition with Silverbird Cinema, which had existed as a monopoly in the market.

Mkparu, during a forum, disclosed that the cinema isn’t just established for a certain class of people, but also prioritises reaching the common man in the society. “The cinema is not just opened for certain class of people; but has also prioritizes every member of the society. That is why we’ve made it affordable, and accessible,” he said.

Rising from its relatively affordable charges on movies, the chain soon grew across the country, attracting bank sponsorship. And to show that the business is lucrative and had been largely untapped, Mkparu, who got part of his loans from Bank of Industry, paid up sooner than expected, thereby raising the hope of the bank towards investing in Nollywood.

Interestingly, FilmOne, the distribution arm of the company, has also gone into film production and collaboration with artistes, some of whose films have made ‘impressive’ box office sales.

Not stopping there, Image Maximum (IMAX), the world’s biggest motion picture film format which had been finding its way into the West African market found a dependable ally in Filmhouse with which it signed a deal in June 2015. Part of the deal was to construct an IMAX theatre in Lagos, marking the first-ever IMAX agreement in Nigeria and West Africa.

Five months after the IMAX deal, another feat was attained with world’s largest producers and distributors of motion pictures, 20th Century Fox, bringing their investment to Nigeria courtesy of FilmOne Distribution. Many had hailed this as a huge landmark for Nollywood.

As part of the agreement, this year, FilmOne Distribution is expected to release such titles as Independence Day: Resurgence, Ice Age: Collision Course, as well as The Birth of a Nation from the Studio’s Fox Searchlight Pictures division and Dreamworks Animation’s Trolls. Mkparu believes this partnership will do more than increase box office result in West Africa.

There is no doubt that the vision of the founders of this company is to become a dynamic cinema company. Strategically, the cinema house has brought into visibility, different platforms at which individuals, organisations and agencies could also publicise their content and intent. These platforms include; Digital advertising, On Screen adverts, Foyer LCD TV, Weekly FilmXtra Magazine Ad placement and pop-corn packs, amongst others.

Only last Wednesday, the group brought three film industry executives from the US for the first edition of its lecture series which held at Filmhouse Surulere (Annex), Adeniran Ogunsanya Mall, Surulere, Lagos.

Stakeholders in the film industry agreed that was another eye-opener for an industry that has the potential to take up the world.

“Thank you Filmhouse, FilmOne and Myfilmhouse Crew. The lecture series 1 was truly interactive and informative. Kene God bless you,” said a participant. And to emphasise the potential of Nollywood, another participant, Chris Ekejimbe, noted among other things that, “Take home from the first edition of Filmhouse/FilmOne lecture series is that trailers of two Nigerian films were played back to back with some from Hollywood and no difference in picture quality.” This, according to him lends credence to the possibility of Nigerian films being shown in cinemas across the ocean.

The guests include Craig Shurn (based in South Carolina and England), former Vice President Sony Pictures, Director Filmhouse & FilmOne and former Film Booking Director Odeon Cinemas UK; Richard Signieski (based in Arizona and Prague, Czech Republic), CEO Blue Sky Media, a feature film distribution company with focus on Central/Eastern Europe and Africa and CEO MYFILMHOUSE VOD platform; and Peter Kornberg of Blue Sky Media (based in New York).

At an educational Meet & Greet session with intensive Q & A on film business and networking opportunity, some of the questions that the series attempted to answer included the essential characteristics you look out for in booking a film; the term Film Hire and why Distributors and Producers find it expensive; the role of a Theatrical Distributor and Cinema Exhibitor.

In the area of studio business, participants were taken through the role a studio plays in the Film Business life cycle, including how films are financed and green lit; the standard or base marketing plan for a studio title and the differences between a studio and Independents.

In the area of Video on Demand (VOD), participants shared useful statistics on VOD penetration globally and indeed Africa; what it takes to set-up a successful VOD platform; how to guide against piracy on Internet VOD platforms; how to select content for VOD and what determines license fees that are set and paid; how the VOD transforms the fortunes of an interesting market such as Nigeria particularly with the challenges of internet speed, data costs, payment solution etc and why filmmakers are yet to record a success story of a VOD platform in Nigeria.

The series also explored the area of marketing and advertising, with variables to consider when developing a marketing plan for a film’s release.

With this, there is no doubt that the organisers recognise that the Nigerian film industry needs fundamental re-education in international standard practices in the business of film. And it is just pointless to wait for government agencies to initiate capacity development.

If other investors in the creative industry would take a cue from the different engagements of this group of companies, the better life will be for Nollywood in its quest to ‘capture’ the world.

  • Couple of Days premieres at FilmHouse

Couple of Days premieres at FilmHouse

It was a gathering of stars at FilmHouse Cinema as it premiered another movie, titled Couple of Days. Featuring some of Nollywood’s talented young actors, the movie tells the story of three couples on a romantic getaway and how they handle the realities of marriage.

Starring Enyinna Nwigwe, Lilian Esoro, Adesua Etomi, OkeyUzoeshi, Kiki Omeili, and Ademola Adedoyin. The movie also guest stars Nigerian rapper, Falz Tha Bad Guy.

Present at the premiere, Esoro, who plays the role of Cynthia said: “My experience on set was amazing. Couple of Days was totally different from the movies I have acted in. I’m hoping everyone likes it.”

Producer of the flick Ayo Orunmuyi said it is his first movie, and his inspiration stems from a desire to be a part of the growing Nollywood industry.

“We selected the theme of marriage because family is the smallest unit of our society, and if you want to make impact on the society, you start from the family. Couples are divorcing every now and then and I think it is because of lack of communication.  We put the movie together to address common marriage issues and to point people the direction people should go. The theme of Couple of Days is forgiveness,” he stated.

The movie was shot in Ibadan, Oyo State, a location which the producer says is to give viewers a different scenario.

“Ibadan has really changed and the governments have done much in terms of development. Ibadan is one of the mega-cities of Africa and it will soon have the population of Lagos, So people need to see the potential in the city,” Orunmuyi added.

IMAX partners Filmhouse to construct theatre

IMAX Corporation and Filmhouse Cinemas, Nigeria’s largest theatre chain, on Wednesday, announced an agreement to construct an IMAX theatre in Lagos.

The deal, announced at CineEurope, marks the first-ever IMAX agreement in Nigeria and West Africa. Nigeria now ranks as Africa’s largest economy. The agreement follows the company’s expansion in Africa. Within the past year, IMAX signed its first deal in Angola, adding four new theatres to its network in South Africa.

“Our mission is to establish the best movie-going experience in Nigeria,” said Kene Mkparu, CEO, Filmhouse Cinemas. “IMAX will help us realize this goal by delivering an immersive and differentiated experience previously unavailable to Nigerian moviegoers. Andrew Cripps, President, IMAX, EMEA said the company is delighted with the agreement with Filmhouse Cinemas.

“Recent reports project that Nigeria’s entertainment and media revenues will reach an estimated $8.5 billion by 2018 – more than doubling from 2013,” said Cripps.

“As the biggest economy on the continent and a market that is extremely under-screened, we believe that together with Filmhouse we can seize the mutual growth opportunities that exist in Nigeria and bring the world’s most immersive cinematic experience to more audiences across the country.”

IMAX, an innovator in entertainment technology, MAX is headquartered in New York, Toronto and Los Angeles, with offices in London, Tokyo, Shanghai and Beijing. • FilmHouse boasts of huge platforms for advertisers

AT a forum in Lagos with advertising practitioners, notable cinema chain, FilmHouse, has called on private and government stakeholders to advertise through its platforms, for wider reach and accessibility.

The dynamic cinema company, set up to develop and operate cinemas in Nigeria, said its vision has so far been accomplished, to be the leading cinema chain in the country.

The cinema house has brought into visibility, different platforms at which individuals, organisations and agencies could publicise their content and intent. These platforms include; Digital advertising, On Screen adverts, Foyer LCD TV, Weekly FilmXtra Magazine Ad placement and porn corn packs, amongst others.

The CEO of the group, Kene Mkparu, during the forum, disclosed that the cinema isn’t just established for a certain class of people, but also prioritizes reaching the common man in the society.

“The cinema is not just opened for certain class of people; but has also prioritizes every member of the society. That is why we’ve made it affordable, and accessible,” he said.

The project is the second phase of a long term project that promises to deliver 25 cinemas in Nigeria by 2018.

Speaking during the opening of the Apapa outfit, Wednesday, an excited Mkparu noted that “setting up a cinema is quite an arduous task. So, seeing this brand new cinema, and more importantly seeing our guests happy to get their own local cinema makes me give thanks to God for making this possible. In addition, this cinema will also contribute to the all-important distribution outlets that Nollywood film producers need to realise more revenue from their films.”

Ever since he relocated from London, having worked at the popular Odion Cinemas in the UK, Mkparu has been at the forefront establishing a cinema chain, which he considers pivotal to the affordable leisure needed by Nigerians even in the remotest parts and an expansion needed by Nollywood filmmakers to recoup their investment.

But beyond the basics, being community cinemas, the CEO of Filmhouse, is by his new outlets, establishing digital outlets that are compliant with current and future technologies.
