Temple Company, FilmOne disagree over highest grossing actor rankings

Two of the biggest entertainment companies in Nigeria, The Temple Company and FilmOne have disagreed over the recently released Highest Grossing Actors rankings of 2024.

Drawing the first blood, Temple Company drew attention to alleged inaccuracies in the Nigerian Box-Office Year Book 2024 published by cinema distribution company FilmOne.

In a recent statement from Temple Company, the entertainment house described the report by FilmOne as a veritable opportunity to showcase the economic impact of the film industry, but faulted the parameters used in arriving at the ranking of her Bisola Aiyeola, top talent with Temple Company.

Aiyeola occupied the fourth spot on the top 10 list of Highest Grossing Female in a Supporting Role in 2024 and this didn’t go down well with Temple Company.

“Of specific concern is the misrepresentation of Bisola Aiyeola’s contributions to the year’s cinematic achievements. Despite delivering compelling performances as Supporting Lead in multiple successful productions, including “Everybody Loves Jenifa,” “Ajosepo,” “Muri,” and “Ko,” her significant role as Madam Bassey in “Everybody Loves Jenifa” was notably omitted from her box office aggregation,” said Femi Salawu, Head, Temple Company’s Media Relations and Public Affairs.

“This omission raises important questions about the methodology employed in the ranking system, particularly the classification criteria between lead and supporting lead roles, the consistency in applying these criteria across all evaluated performances, and the transparency of the data aggregation process. We respectfully request a review of the ranking methodology and data aggregation process to ensure accuracy and fairness in representing our industry’s achievements. Disputing the dismissal of Bisola Aiyeola’s role as Madam Bassey in Everybody Loves Jenifa as Supporting Lead her box-office aggregation, the omission is a significant flaw capable of robbing the report of its credibility.”

Reacting to Temple Company’s reservations about the rankings, FilmOne Entertainment, reaffirms the integrity and credibility of its Nigeria Box Office Rankings for the year 2024.

The cinema distribution company reiterated that the rankings are generated working with data partners, Comscore, and Cinema Exhibitors Association of Nigeria (CEAN).

  • FILMONE PREMIERES ASSASSIN’S CREED

GAMERS and lovers of good film were given a treat last Friday as FilmOne Distribution held the premiere of Christmas season movie, Assassin’s Creed.

The premiere of the flick, which took place at Genesis Deluxe Cinema, Lekki, also doubled as a gaming convention.

Explaining the rationale behind the gaming convention/movie premiere, Damola Layonu, Operations Support Manager at FilmOne Distribution Limited, said that the event serves to boost the rising gaming culture of Nigerians.

“We distribute movies on behalf of 20th century fox and we have that exclusive right here in Nigeria and Ghana. So this is one of the movies that we are releasing and it just came out today and we decided to do the premiere on the same day of release. We had some advance screening a couple of days prior and the numbers are crazy. I think that the gaming culture in Lagos has really taken off,” he said.

According to Layonu, a couple of Nigerian artistes threw their weight behind the gaming convention, a proof that the culture is fast gaining momentum.

If you look around, you will see that people are here to play games. As a nation, I think that entertainment is something that we value very highly in any format. That is why our concerts are well attended, and our premieres are always packed full. Now gaming is beginning to take off among our people,” he added.

Following the convention, guests and artistes present filed into the cinema hall to view the movie.

Assassin’s Creed is a 2016 action adventure film based on the video game franchise of the same name.

The film is directed by Justin Kurzel, and written by Michael Lesslie, Adam Cooper and Bill Collage, and stars Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons, Brendan Gleeson, Charlotte Rampling and Michael K. Williams.

Among artistes who graced the event were OC Ukeje, Denrele Edun and a host of others.

  • FILMHOUSE, FILMONE AND THE PRIVATE SECTOR INITIATIVE

ONE may want to ask why Kene Mkparu, MD/CEO of Filmhouse cinema and FilmOne Distribution is having his hands in many pies. In no time, after coming into the film distribution and exhibition business in Nigeria, after serving at the Odion Cinema in the UK, he made cinema culture less elitist by evolving competition with Silverbird Cinema, which had existed as a monopoly in the market.

Mkparu, during a forum, disclosed that the cinema isn’t just established for a certain class of people, but also prioritises reaching the common man in the society. “The cinema is not just opened for certain class of people; but has also prioritizes every member of the society. That is why we’ve made it affordable, and accessible,” he said.

Rising from its relatively affordable charges on movies, the chain soon grew across the country, attracting bank sponsorship. And to show that the business is lucrative and had been largely untapped, Mkparu, who got part of his loans from Bank of Industry, paid up sooner than expected, thereby raising the hope of the bank towards investing in Nollywood.

Interestingly, FilmOne, the distribution arm of the company, has also gone into film production and collaboration with artistes, some of whose films have made ‘impressive’ box office sales.

Not stopping there, Image Maximum (IMAX), the world’s biggest motion picture film format which had been finding its way into the West African market found a dependable ally in Filmhouse with which it signed a deal in June 2015. Part of the deal was to construct an IMAX theatre in Lagos, marking the first-ever IMAX agreement in Nigeria and West Africa.

Five months after the IMAX deal, another feat was attained with world’s largest producers and distributors of motion pictures, 20th Century Fox, bringing their investment to Nigeria courtesy of FilmOne Distribution. Many had hailed this as a huge landmark for Nollywood.

As part of the agreement, this year, FilmOne Distribution is expected to release such titles as Independence Day: Resurgence, Ice Age: Collision Course, as well as The Birth of a Nation from the Studio’s Fox Searchlight Pictures division and Dreamworks Animation’s Trolls. Mkparu believes this partnership will do more than increase box office result in West Africa.

There is no doubt that the vision of the founders of this company is to become a dynamic cinema company. Strategically, the cinema house has brought into visibility, different platforms at which individuals, organisations and agencies could also publicise their content and intent. These platforms include; Digital advertising, On Screen adverts, Foyer LCD TV, Weekly FilmXtra Magazine Ad placement and pop-corn packs, amongst others.

Only last Wednesday, the group brought three film industry executives from the US for the first edition of its lecture series which held at Filmhouse Surulere (Annex), Adeniran Ogunsanya Mall, Surulere, Lagos.

Stakeholders in the film industry agreed that was another eye-opener for an industry that has the potential to take up the world.

“Thank you Filmhouse, FilmOne and Myfilmhouse Crew. The lecture series 1 was truly interactive and informative. Kene God bless you,” said a participant. And to emphasise the potential of Nollywood, another participant, Chris Ekejimbe, noted among other things that, “Take home from the first edition of Filmhouse/FilmOne lecture series is that trailers of two Nigerian films were played back to back with some from Hollywood and no difference in picture quality.” This, according to him lends credence to the possibility of Nigerian films being shown in cinemas across the ocean.

The guests include Craig Shurn (based in South Carolina and England), former Vice President Sony Pictures, Director Filmhouse & FilmOne and former Film Booking Director Odeon Cinemas UK; Richard Signieski (based in Arizona and Prague, Czech Republic), CEO Blue Sky Media, a feature film distribution company with focus on Central/Eastern Europe and Africa and CEO MYFILMHOUSE VOD platform; and Peter Kornberg of Blue Sky Media (based in New York).

At an educational Meet & Greet session with intensive Q & A on film business and networking opportunity, some of the questions that the series attempted to answer included the essential characteristics you look out for in booking a film; the term Film Hire and why Distributors and Producers find it expensive; the role of a Theatrical Distributor and Cinema Exhibitor.

In the area of studio business, participants were taken through the role a studio plays in the Film Business life cycle, including how films are financed and green lit; the standard or base marketing plan for a studio title and the differences between a studio and Independents.

In the area of Video on Demand (VOD), participants shared useful statistics on VOD penetration globally and indeed Africa; what it takes to set-up a successful VOD platform; how to guide against piracy on Internet VOD platforms; how to select content for VOD and what determines license fees that are set and paid; how the VOD transforms the fortunes of an interesting market such as Nigeria particularly with the challenges of internet speed, data costs, payment solution etc and why filmmakers are yet to record a success story of a VOD platform in Nigeria.

The series also explored the area of marketing and advertising, with variables to consider when developing a marketing plan for a film’s release.

With this, there is no doubt that the organisers recognise that the Nigerian film industry needs fundamental re-education in international standard practices in the business of film. And it is just pointless to wait for government agencies to initiate capacity development.

If other investors in the creative industry would take a cue from the different engagements of this group of companies, the better life will be for Nollywood in its quest to ‘capture’ the world.

  • Nigeria’s FilmOne brings 20th  Century Fox to West Africa

Nigeria’s FilmOne brings 20th  Century Fox to West Africa

Barely five months after inking a deal with Image Maximum (IMAX), the world’s biggest motion picture film format, Group MD/CEO, Filmhouse Cinemas/FilmOne Distribution, KeneMkparu, has entered an agreement with 20thCentury Fox, the popular American film studio to bring a never-before-seen cinematic experience to Nigeria.

While the IMAX partnership will require the expertise used in running Filmhouse, FilmOne is expected to distribute all Fox titles directly to cinemas in Nigeria and Ghana. This is the first deal of its kind in West Africa for 20th Century Fox.

As part of the agreement, FilmOne Distribution will release in 2016 such titles as Independence Day: Resurgence, Ice Age: Collision Course, as well as The Birth of a Nation from the Studio’s Fox Searchlight Pictures division and Dreamworks Animation’s Trolls. The release of Independence Day: Resurgence in West Africa has been fixed for July 1.

Mkparu believes this partnership will do more than increase box office result in West Africa. “Twentieth Century Fox have today made a bold statement in showcasing their interest in the growing African Film Market, of which the West African region, particularly Nigeria has become a major player,” he said.

“We have no doubt in our mind that this partnership will not only surpass previous box office results but with Fox’s diverse film slate it will deepen and popularise the cinema-going culture in naturally receptive and entertainment-loving countries like Nigeria and Ghana.”

Corroborating Mkparu’s position,  Chief Operations Officer and EVP of FilmOne Distribution, Moses Babatope, said, “We are absolutely delighted to be partnering with such a dynamic and successful Hollywood Studio who have already started 2016 on a remarkable note with box office hits like the academy award-winning The Revenant, animation franchise Kung Fu Panda 3 and recent comic book phenomenon Deadpool.”

For Paul Higginson, Fox’s Executive Vice President International Distribution (EMEA), apart from the fact that Nigeria is a leading entertainment market in West Africa that Fox cannot afford to ignore, FilmOne has been proven to understand the local business environment.

“We are delighted to be working with Kene, Moses and the entire FilmOne team on expanding our reach in Africa particularly in the increasingly important market of Nigeria,” Higginson said. “Twentieth Century Fox has always sought out new opportunities and the best distribution partners in each territory with in-depth local knowledge, and we feel that we’ve found the perfect partner in FilmOne. We look forward to working with FilmOne closely to get the best results from all our titles.”

Recall that during a visit of IMAX to FilmHouse Headquarters in Lagos, last December, Giovanni Dolci, Vice President, Theatre Development, disclosed plans to enhance a healthy relationship between Nigerian and Hollywood filmmakers. “There would also be collaboration between IMAX and filmmakers in Nigeria, as done in China, Russia and India,” he stated, adding that the plan to improve the viewing experience in this part of the globe has been on for a long time, but he lamented that IMAX got some disappointments on earlier partnership projects. However, he said that they were motivated by the likened brilliant dream of FilmHouse to build foremost cinemas in Nigeria.

    New film premieres in Ibadan

Distributors of Half of a Yellow Sun and October 1, FilmOne Distributions, have announced the coming of another flick, A Silent Cry (Ekun Asunsinu), a Yoruba language film, which they said would make waves among several films produced in Nigeria this year.
