    LBS alumni are finalists at MBA awards

    Lagos Business School (LBS) alumni has emerged finalists at the 2018 Association of MBA (AMBA) Awards in London, the United Kingdom.

    The alumni, Glory Eyinnaya (EMBA 21) and Aidenehi Okosun (MBA 14), are finalists in the  (AMBA) Student of the Year and the Entrepreneurial Venture of the Year.

    The AMBA Student of the Year Award, sponsored by  Wall Street Journal, is for high-performing student, who demonstrate outstanding skills and motivation towards becoming tomorrow’s business leaders while the MBA Entrepreneurial Venture Award celebrates the achievements of successful alumni, who are pioneers in world-class business strategy.

    In a statement, the awards also listed the business schools, which nurtured the spirit of enterprise and ambition.

    According to the statement, Glory Enyinnaya, a management consultant and entrepreneur, led the implementation of change on various technology projects across Africa, including the West African team of the world’s largest SAP deployment.

    She studied Accounting at the University of Nigeria and concluded an Executive MBA at the Lagos Business School, Pan-Atlantic University, Lagos last year.

    She is the founder and lead consultant of Kleos Africa, an online consulting platform, which aims to  enable value-adding interactions between African SMEs and experienced MBAs and professionals, with the aim of increasing the rates of successful entrepreneurship in Africa.

    She is also the programme manager for the African Women Entrepreneurship Cooperative (AWEC), an initiative of the New York-based Centre for Global Enterprise, which aims to empower 3,000 African women entrepreneurs by 2021.

    Also, Aidenehi Okosun possesses about seven years of post-graduate experience in various industries, including energy, technology and food & beverage where he played several leadership roles, after his graduation in Management Information System from the Covenant University, Lagos.

    10 finalists emerge in GCGT7

    •As show gets winner this weekend

    With the grand finale of Africa’s gospel talent show, God’s Children Great Talent (GCGT7), scheduled to hold on June 24 at the Eko Hotel & Suites, Lagos, organisers have unveiled 10 contestants who will slog it out closing ceremony of the show, billed for a live television broadcast.

    The finalists are Esther Benyeogo, Nengi Jaja, Paul Bafunso, Sophia Albert, Emmanuel Osahor, Peter Anderson, Olawonuola Kehinde, Joseph Odi, Deborah Oladipupo and Goodluck Ajirireloja.

    The show gets more tensed as the contestants canvass for public votes to support their chance of winning the grand prize of N250 million management deal; N10 million cash and a brand new car.

    Before the finalists were selected by the judges, the audience witnessed semi-final performances by 20 contestants, as each showed their skill of dancing, singing, spoken word, dexterity with the instruments.

    Each lucky contestant was selected by a combination of live audience votes and the distinguished GCGT7 judges.

     

  • Finalists laud Cowbellpedia

    Secondary school pupils, who participated in the Cowbellpedia quiz competition aired on many television stations nationwide, have praised the initiative for challenging them to improve in Mathematics.

    The quiz is the second and intensive stage of the National Secondary School Mathematics Competition (NASSMAC) organised by Promasidor Nigeria.

    Some of the 12 pupils, who got to the final stage of the competition in both junior and senior categories, said the initiative stimulated their interest in Mathematics.

    In the junior category were: Abdulmueez Yusuf (Nigerian Turkish International College, Abuja); Munachi Ernest-Eze (Loyola Jesuit College, Abuja); Ajoke Taiwo (Scholars Universal Secondary School, Ota); Olabisi Bello (Dansol High School, Acme Crescent); Ayomide Fadipe (Loyola Jesuit College); and Evans Owamoyo (Greater Tomorrow International College, Arigidi).

    Similarly, Joshua Mukot (Emilis Academy, Calabar); Inibehe Otoho (Topfaith International Secondary School, Mkpatak, Akwa Ibom state); Titilayo Adewale-Fasoro (Hallmark Secondary School, Itanla, Ondo State); Mariam Sanni (Ota Total Academy, Ota); Ayomide Kamaldeen (Loyola Jesuit College, Abuja); and Ayodeji Akinkuowo (Adeyemi College of Education Demonstration Secondary School, Ondo) made it to the final stage in the senior category.

    Speaking on his impression, Munachi, a 13-year old student of Loyola Jesuit College, Abuja said the competition was of high standard.

    His words: “You can see that I am shedding tears of joy. It is not only because of my brilliant performance but because of the high standard of the competition. It is obvious that a lot of preparation has gone into achieving this level of performance. I commend the teachers; I also commend Cowbell for giving us this opportunity”.

    Apart from enhancing their interest in mathematics, some of the finalists said their participation in the competition has raised their profiles back in school.

    Olabisi Bello said: “My friends and teachers now treat me differently in school, they call me Cowbell.”

    The Cowbell NASSMAC has been in existence since 2001.  This year, the competition was modified to feature a televised quiz competition from the second stage.

    Of the modification, Managing Director of Promasidor, Mr. Olivier Thiry, said innovation drives the organisation’s business.

    “Today, this new and value-adding direction takes our initiative to another height in our pursuit to nurture great innovators – engineers and scientists for tomorrow. Mathematics is particularly unique as it is the bedrock upon which science and technology is built,” he said.

    Team HAI, Meddlelane emerge finalists of Fayrouz L’Original 2

    In an interesting twist of event, Team HAI and Team MeddleLane emerged finalists at the Fayrouz L’Original Expression Show season 2. The two teams stood out in their presentation and style of the six teams that made it to the semi-final after the regional auditions in Ibadan, Enugu, Port Harcourt and Lagos.

    Held at the Tinapa Conference Centre, Calabar, Cross River state, the six semi-finalists teams- HAI, MeddleLane, SCOG, FIB and Ombre were tasked to make pieces from elements of Fayrouz products. It witnessed presentations from all six teams who gave fantastic interpretations to the challenge of creating a collection that incorporates the physical elements of the drink including its label, tray, crown top and crate and with reference to eco fashion and the unconventional designer, Maison Martin Margiela.

    The Eco fashion task saw the teams thinking outside the box to impress the judges. However, Team HAI from Ibadan and Team Meddlelane from Lagos impressed the judges the most with their style, make-up, model and photography.

    While Team Meddlelane went for a feisty, edgy and sophisticated look, Team Hai explored the goddess look of Sin, the goddess of the Sinai Island where Fayrouz gem stones can be found. They implemented the design with Fayrouz cans, crowns and bottles.

    The teams were judged on originality, creativity, synergy and most importantly, the interpretation of the task given.

    “I’m pleased with the creativity of the semi-finalists,” said ace fashion designer Kunbi Oyelese, who was one of the judges. “The six teams tried to interpret the task to the best of their understanding but the finalists were simply impeccable.”

    The Senior Brand manager, Fayrouz, Nnnena Ifebigh-Hemeson also stated her satisfaction at the competition so far and expressed confidence in the judges’ choice of the finalists.

    “The semi-finalists’ presentation is an affirmation to the amazing talents these young ones possess,” she said. “Their pieces were not only amazing but very creative too and  judges were very impressed. As regards the results, the judges are grounded in different fields, I have no doubts in my heart they made the best choice of the six.”

    The finalists will now move on to Lagos to compete for the grand prize of Four Million Naira after exclusive mentorship workshops by the Fayrouz L’Original2 Jury.

    The competition kicked off last year and produced winner, Team Elan who have gone ahead to showcase at several fashion shows alongside other popular designers including Mai Atafo, April By Kunbi, Deola Sagoe and others.

    Imagine Cup finalists emerge

    Acombined team of students from the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife and the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso will pitch their technology ideas against the best student teams from other parts of the world at the Imagine Cup final holding July in Russia.

    Team Life Saver won the Nigerian ticket at a competition held at the Victoria Crown Plaza Hotel, VI. Eleven other teams competed but Live Saver’s carried the day with CardioLife, a device the team invented.

    Afolabi Olamide, Oluwole Michael, Akinlaja Solomon and Adewale Adeyinka, all members of Team Life Saver, competed in the category of World Citizenship. Their solution titled CardioLife is designed to tackle heart attack by monitoring heart reading on the fly via the Microsoft Windows Phone. The solution also provides a rehabilitation programme for stroke patients using the Kinect sensor.

    In addition to winning the ticket to the global finals scheduled for St Petersburg, Russia in July 23, Nokia would be giving each member of Team Life Saver its innovative smartphones, Nokia Lumia 920 devices while Dell Nigeria would present them with Dell Vestro laptops.

    “We are speechless! To have won the competition – and to have the opportunity to represent our country at the Worldwide Imagine Cup along some of the brightest young minds – is an honour,” said Team Life Saver’s spokesperson, Oluwole Michael. “And we’re thrilled to have the opportunity to compete with students from around the globe who, like us, are passionate about making a difference in the world.”

    Yinka Oni, National Technology Officer for Microsoft Anglophone West Africa, praised all the teams for their creativity.

    “Each team that competed in the regional finals is deserving of the highest recognition for the creativity and imagination applied to some of the world’s biggest challenges. We’re proud to honour these young students who we believe truly exemplify the spirit of the Imagine Cup competition, and we’ll be cheering Team Life Saver on as they compete on the world stage in St Petersburg,” he said.

    “Imagine Cup is also directly aligned with the Microsoft 4Afrika Initiative that was launched earlier this year as it drives access to technology, innovation and world-class skills. We believe deeply that technology can accelerate growth for Africa, and Africa can also accelerate technology for the world, and we are honoured to engage with these young people to help bring their innovative ideas to fruition.”

    In his congratulatory message at the event, Partner Manager, Developer Experience Nokia West Africa, Olumide Balogun praised the winners on their victory.

    “We are proud of Team Life Saver for developing such an innovative solution which fetched them the ticket to showcase their talents on the world stage and more importantly, pleased at their smart delivery during the project presentation.”

    He added, “We appreciate their efforts and hardwork and hope they go on to win the cup at the worldwide finals in Russia”.

    IT was an riveting performance on Sunday night as, for the first time ever, the two finalists in the Nigerian Idol Season 3, Debbie Rise and Moses, united in a duet, performing Cyndi Lauper’s Time after Time. They both went ahead to perform three songs each in the show which had Banky W as guest judge.

    The ultimate icing on the cake was a performance by Banky W. He performed his latest hit single, Yes/No, while also commending the contestants for making it this far. “The fact that you both have come this far means that you guys have done well. Hard work beats talent when talent doesn’t work hard. What matters is what you do when this season is over. Remember that, take it and do the best you can with it,” Banky W said, after watching their performances.

    The judges, Yinka Davies, Jeffrey Daniels and Femi Kuti, echoed similar sentiments, but were in a dilemma picking who was the better performer on the night, as both contestants returned to stage with more energy and skill. “This is it. This is the battle, and what we were actually looking for from the beginning. I know this is not the end for you two. Wherever you go from here, I’ll be watching,” said Daniels.
