Newly appointed  Super Eagles’ Head Coach, Finidi George,  is expected to name his technical assistants at his long-awaited unveiling by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF)  today in Abuja.

Named as the new substantive Head Coach of the Senior Men National Team a fortnight ago, the former Ajax Amsterdam’s winger has reportedly  proposed a five-man technical  staff including  three foreign assistants with former Nigeria international striker Daniel Amokachi expected to be his second assistant while the team’s current goalkeepers trainers Abideen Baruwa would continue in the same capacity.

Our correspondent gathered that ‘Finito’  as George  is fondly called by admirers may name his assistants  in what would be his major assignment  soon after his unveiling.

“Of course, the names of the assistants to Finidi George will be announced (at the unveiling),” a source privy to the arrangements told NationSports.

According to the  NFF in its customary release issued  by its Director of Communication, Ademola Olajire  informed that   Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Owan Enoh, alongside Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mrs. Tinuke Watti, President of NFF Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau and the NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, are among prominent personalities expected at the unveiling.

Prior to his appointment, the  52-year-old former Enyimba coach,  spent 20 months as assistant to Portuguese José Peseiro from the summer of 2022, during which the Super Eagles qualified for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations and came within 28 minutes of a fourth African title in Cote d’Ivoire three months ago.

George, who as a player won 62 caps for Nigeria at senior level, during which he won the Africa Cup of Nations gold, silver and bronze, and played in two FIFA World Cup finals, has the immediate task of picking maximum points from 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches against South Africa (home) and Benin Republic (away) in a few weeks.

FIFA World Cup 26: Finidi gets tips tor tricky upcoming ties

With the resumption of the  FIFA World Cup 26 qualifiers in June with a double header  for the Super Eagles against  South Africa and Republic of Benin, Nigerians have yet again urged  newly appointed Head coach  Finidi George  to ensure  victories  in the upcoming tricky ties to put  the country’s dream of  making it to the first 48-expanded Mundial a reality, write MORAKINYO ABODUNRIN  and  TUNDE LIADI

Prior to  the dream  debut at USA 1994, Nigeria’s senior men’s national team under different guise as Red Devils, Green Eagles  and Super Eagles, had catalogue of  missing qualification for the world’s greatest  football   showpiece-The FIFA World Cup.

But the Super Eagles  quickly made it to the next two editions  at France  1998 and Japan/Korea  2002 but were shockingly  denied  to the 2006  edition hosted by Germany. They however, made a detour  by  qualifying for South Africa 2010,  Brazil 2014 as well as Russia  2018 World Cup finals.

The Super Eagles could have made it four successive qualifications  for Qatar  2022  but were  halted  by perennial rivals, the Black Stars of Ghana , in a dramatic fashion in the  decisive  final play-off.

Nigeria picked a goalless draw in the first leg of the playoff played at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi and Nigerians eagerly awaited a positive result in Abuja in the return leg. But it was not to be as the Eagles trailed first before William Troost Ekong equalised from the penalty spot in the second half. The game ended 1-1 as the Black Stars pipped Nigeria to the World Cup ticket.

Having missed the 2022 World Cup held in Qatar, Nigerians are least  impressed with the Super Eagles’ poor start to FIFA World Cup 26 to be hosted  by United States, Mexico and Canada after  they picked just two points from the opening two matches  following  an identical 1-1 draw against Lesotho  and Zimbabwe.

It was former Eagles coach, Jose Peseiro that prosecuted both games last year although while newly appointed  coach Finidi George was his assistant.

Currently trailed third behind Rwanda (four points) and South Africa (three points), the  Super Eagles can stage a comeback as the  FIFA World Cup 26  qualifiers get underway in June  with a double header  against South Africa  in Uyo and Republic of Benin  in Abidjan.

Ahead of these upcoming  tricky fixtures,  some experts have  counselled that  the Super Eagles under George must do things  differently  in order to make  progress towards  getting one of the continent’s tickets to  the 48-expanded  Mundial come 2026.

Former Nigeria  international  and Ex- Roda JC midfielder, Garba Lawal  has urged  the Super Eagles to strive for the maximum points in both upcoming World Cup qualifiers even as  he advised  Finidi to pick players who are businesslike and ready to  give 100 percent commitment.

“I think the Super Eagles need to win every game now either home or away,”  Garba, a member of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF)  Technical & Development Committee, told NationSports.“ It is very important for the team and they cannot afford to give any room for complacency knowing the position they occupy in the group. World Cup is the biggest tournament in the world and it is the desire of every player to participate.

“If called upon, the players want to be there and give everything they have to ensure that Nigeria succeeds in both games. The coach is not new to the terrain.

“He is my friend and I pray for him to succeed. He has our full support,” added the erstwhile Super Eagles’ midfield Trojan and 1996 Olympic  Soccer gold medallist; who featured in four  AFCON between 2000 and 2006 as well as  two FIFA World Cup in 1998 and 2002.

Finland-based former youth international , coach Abdul Aziz Moshood who currently  works with Atlantis FC , has equally implored Finidi not to change his stance on getting the right set of players for the two games and not allow unseen forces to incapacitate him knowing that he would get the sticks or the praise after next month’s games.

The former Ponnistus FC, FC Kontu and Dynamo Dresden player challenged the Eagles boss to mentor new set of players to stardom, adding  he should  be bullish and not afraid to make mistakes in his quest to raise a formidable squad.

“He (Finidi George)  should not compromise his integrity,” counselled  the 55-year-old vastly experienced   coach. “He should do his job and check the players he is inviting, knowing that those that can deliver for him are the ones he should opt for.

“He should look inward too and have the capacity to mentor his players to greater height knowing that there are no ready-made players, he has to build them.

“ He should not be afraid to make mistakes, it goes with the job,” he added.

Meanwhile Kwale-based  foremost  youth coach, Uche Chukuka,  has advised Finidi to stamp his authority as head coach by ensuring that he fashion out the winning formula against South Africa and Benin Republic.

He beckoned the NFF to leave Finidi to do his job without undue interference and he also urged the Eagles coach to be a team player working with his Assistant coaches and taking and comparing notes with them.

“Having secured the job, there is need for him to set the ball rolling immediately, considering that there is little time left to prepare for the World Cup qualifiers coming up next month against South Africa and Republic of Benin. The big question here is : what must Finidi George do differently to secure the World Cup ticket for our dear country?” Chukuka asked rhetorically.

“The first point here is that he, as a matter of MUST, he should be given a free hand to do his job. Undue interference from our football ruling body NFF must be avoided. Of course, he is not working in isolation as he has a team of coaches and others to work with. But imposition of ideas or players of any sort must be avoided.”

Coach Chukuka further warned Finidi not to pick his players for the two upcoming games with sentiments , adding that he should place more premium on players who will be ready to give their all for the country to succeed and not based on their pedigrees and the clubs they play for alone.

He further counselled  Finidi to beam his searchlight on the Nigerian league and fish out a few quality players that can help make the senior national team more competitive.

He continued: “His choice of players to be invited should not be based on sentiment. He should be objective and base invitation strictly on current form of players.

“And also, players don’t have to be invited based on pedigree as to how big the club they play for in Europe is. There may be better players out there who may not have gotten the opportunity to hit the limelight.

“So, he should spread the net of his search to cover smaller leagues in Europe and other continents and even in the Nigerian League as there may be one or two very exceptional players who might give the old players a run for the Super Eagles shirt. Finidi himself was a product of such a scenario where he was picked ahead of foreign players while still playing in our local league, Sharks FC of Port Harcourt, to be precise.”

The coach also wants Finidi’s tactics to be spot on unlike his predecessor, Jose Peseiro whose tactics was predictable and made the players suffer unnecessarily just like it was at the 2023 AFCON in Cote d’ivoire.

He noted: “Another important factor is the issue of his tactical approach. His approach should be a departure from what we saw from our Super Eagles in the last Nations Cup where we always allowed our opponents to dominate possession only to rely on counterattacks.”

“Our approach was too one dimensional and boring. Good enough, one of our opponents next month, South Africa met us in the Nations Cup. We have seen that they can keep the ball. We must strive to be the ones dominating play and not the other way round.

“In football, coaches are expected to adopt tactics that suit the quality of players they have. We have quality players who are very comfortable on the ball in that they have very good techniques. Our tactics should reflect this to have  advantage over our opponents.”

He  also wants Finidi to have a new look Super Eagles with attractive attacking football :”Aside possession, our new Gaffer should bring in a more positive approach of being more attack minded. We must play purposefully to put pressure on opponents. Most teams that excel in modern football adopt this positive approach and it makes opponents who are not prepared enough for their pressure to buckle with time.

“Our players should also be made to express themselves freely while not losing touch with tactical discipline of reverting from attack to defense and vice versa. He  shouldn’t be afraid of failure because such fears could hinder us from going all out. All he needs is to strike a balance between attacking and defending.”

Meanwhile, former Head Coach of Bayelsa United, Richard Bubagha , has challenged Finidi to stick with strictly almost the same set of players that helped Nigeria qualify for the final of the 2023 AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire  if he is eager to start his rein impressively.

Bubagha said the only important addition he should make is the injection of Victor Boniface to the attack while ensuring he infuses his own philosophy on the team to ensure the Eagles secure maximum points in both games.

“I think what he needs to do to get it right with the two world cup qualifiers, is to key to the last AFCON players, make few changes n come up with a formidable philosophy that would make the team play both home n away games with ease,” said Bubagha, who also worked with  Nigeria National League side, BYT Academicals. “I think Coach Finidi George can do all of that i stated above to win the two games, n also bringing in Boniface to strengthen the attack and his attacking minded philosophy to achieve the needed results.

“Most especially , all hands should be on deck. We should all come out en masse and support Finidi George and our darling Super Eagles to victory.”

Similarly, former Super Eagles defender Godwin Okpara also weighed in his thoughts on what Finidi George should do to light up Nigeria’s World Cup hopes again.

The  former PSG defender welcomed the recruitment of  George as head coach of the Super Eagles as he called on Nigerians to get behind him and the team to smoothen the Eagles’ quest to relaunch their World Cup Qualifying campaign.

He volunteered: “It’s a good thing for us, especially we ex-internationals. What we are hoping now is for him to deliver and make sure he is successful in this new appointment. He needs everybody’s support and I have that belief that he can do it.

“Nothing is Impossible so far you have that belief in you and experience, exposure and everything; I think he can do it. However, let me stress that Nigerians have to exercise patience. If we don’t have it, we will lose it.”

He continued: “What we need now is to support him so that he can be successful in this position. Look at Senegal, the coach of the team is also an ex-international, Aliou Cissé, how long has he been there? He has been there for so long.

“Despite the fact that they didn’t do well at the last AFCON, they didn’t because of that remove him, this is what we need, if we want to get it right, this is what we need.”

The 51-year-old beckons on the NFF to provide Finidi the enabling environment and instruments to work it that will ease up his work while adding that the football house must not toy with the team’s preparations ahead of both games.

“What he needs now is support. Whatever he needs now they should provide it. We should not wait till when it starts getting to that time we start running here and there. Whatever he needs now they should provide it for him to get the right results. Nigeria is fond of waiting for dying minute before taking action.

“It’s now that we have to start. If they can pass that message to the NFF and whoever is in charge to start now, whatever preparation we are going to do we should start it now for him to be successful.

“Being a new coach, they should give him whatever he needs. That is it. I know as a new coach, he might be thinking that he just got the job and not ask questions, I am not saying he should be confrontational but he shouldn’t be afraid of anyone because he is new on the job. For you to get the right result you have to come out and tell them what you want exactly.”

Football enthusiast and business mogul in Rivers State,  Christopher Okonkwo has begged the NFF board not to hesitate in providing enabling environment and good welfare package for Finidi as it was done for the foreign coaches, so that he will be in good frame of mind to do his job effectively.

He warned the NFF against imposition of players and ideas on the new coach and he also advised Finidi to go for the best legs available for the country even if they are all from the same family.

“Besides, I will also plead with NFF, as a matter of fact to refrain from interfering in Coach Finidi’s job, instead, he should be given a free hand to select the best of players whom he trusts that can deliver and by so doing, would be liable to account for anything that will stop the Eagles from winning or qualifying for the World Cup,” Okonkwo noted.

“I want to suggest to Finidi that if he is convinced that eleven (11) players from the same family can represent Nigeria and give us the needed victory, let him go on, instead of this idea of agitation and pandering to quota system in selection of players from different to satisfy quota system, which does not produce the expected good result at the end of the day,” he stated.

    Amokachi to be  second assistant

Newly appointed Super Eagles coach, Finidi George, has listed three foreigners in a five-man  technical  crew that will include  former Nigeria International  Daniel Amokachi  and current goalkeepers trainer, Abideen Baruwa.

George  and  chieftains of the Nigeria Football Federation(NFF)  have been meeting  over the  last few days  to iron out  the final details  of  a contract  for the former Ajax Amsterdam  winger who  was  recently announced as the substantive  manager of the  national team following the departure of Portuguese coach Jose Peseiro after  the silver-medal finish at the  2023 Africa Cup of Nations  in Cote d’Ivoire.

The issue of  others  that would work with  George has dominated  discussions in sports circles but  sources at the NFF  has now  hinted  that  the 52-year-old coach has  tabled a proposal of five technical crew  with words rife  that a German-Nigerian  has been listed as first assistant  with  Amokachi to be  a second assistant.

While Baruwa  would maintain his status as  the goalkeepers trainer, there are places for two more  foreign assistants  who would serve as physical trainer and  match analyst respectively.

Yet, it was gathered  that a one-year contact  will be signed by George  with an extension clause  should  the Super Eagles reach the semi-final stages  of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations(AFCON)  to be hosted in Morocco.

NationSports  gathered that the NFF  is yet at sea on how  funds would be sourced for  the foreign  assistants  with many said  to be worried  that  George  is making things rather  difficult as regards the listing of three foreign assistants.

But   former Nigeria international  and a member of the Technical & Development Committee of the NFF Dr. Felix Owolabi  insists  that  George is duty-bound to pick his own assistants in order to enjoy a good working environment.

“ He (George) should be allowed to pick his assistants  because that is the right thing to do,” Owolabi who won the AFCON  with the Green Eagles in 1980  said recently. “ The NFF cannot choose for him;  it has to be the prerogative of the coach to determine  those who are to work with him.”

Some former  Nigeria internationals  have advised   the newly appointed Super Eagles head coach to be professional and firm in his judgment as he assumes his new coaching  role.

Baldwin Bazuaye,  a member of Nigeria’s squad which won the 1985 FIFA U-16 World Championship in China, urged George  to ensure professionalism in his conduct.

“It is a good thing that the NFF has deemed it fit to appoint a former player in person of George as the coach of the team,” Bazuaye told the News Agency of Nigeria. “We should give kudos to the NFF for this opportunity and getting them involved in the affairs of the national teams.

“My advice for George is that he must be professional in his dealings with the players. I believe he can do it and will succeed.”

“The job of the Super Eagles is a serious one and George must be diligent in handling the affairs of the team. He must make his selection based on merit and shun nepotism,” he said.

The 1990 African Nations Cup silver medallist, urged the NFF to give George a free hand to work and learn from his own mistakes.

“George must be fair to all and also be ready to listen to other people’s advice,” he said.

On his part, Edema Fuludu hailed the choice of George by the NFF to handle the Super Eagles.

“Fortunately, I have always advocated for a home-based coach for our national team. For me, it is not Eldorado yet, because we want results.

“I have also advocated that NFF should give any local coach appointed a formal contract and let him have authority as the manager of the team.

“George should be allowed to make his decisions without interference, although the technical committee of the NFF also wants the best for the team,” he said.

Fuludu advised George to run an open door policy in managing the affairs of the team.

“I will advise him to shun anything that will be detrimental to his progress. If he is not allowed to work as he ought to, he should speak.

“George must also be proactive and bring those he can work with into the team and in terms of selection; he must ensure an all-embracing team,“ he said.

He urged George to also give the home based players the opportunity to showcase their talents.

Coaching Enyimba comes with pressure, says Finidi

Enyimba began their quest for another shot at the CAF Champions League last weekend when they posted an impressive performance in a seven-goal thriller against Libyan side, Al Ahly Benghazi. The club’s head coach, Finidi George  who led the team to their record ninth domestic league title in the 2022/23 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season shares details about his on-going experience with the People’s Elephants in a conversation with TUNDE LIADI.

Super Eagles chief coach, Finidi George is on the march again for Enyimba this term in the CAF Champions League after leading the club to the CAF Confederation Cup in the 2021-22 season where they were technically edged out by Libyan side, Al Ittihad.

Enyimba had beaten Senegalese Diambars FC 4-0 on aggregate in the second round and they led Al Ittihad 2-0 from the first leg of the playoff round played at Aba but they were walked over by the Libyan side after they failed to show up because they were awaiting the verdict of their appeal to the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

Despite their first leg 4-3 loss to Al Ahly Benghazi last weekend, Finidi said they know the pressure that comes with representing Enyimba and Nigeria in the foremost Africa’s clubs competition and have intensified their preparations for the challenge.

The former Super Eagles winger said that making a positive impact in the competition after their NPFL title winning run would help put their objectives in proper perspective.

“I will say winning the league was exceptional,” George, star member of the Super Eagles; 1994- Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)-winning team, told NationSport. “We fought for it and worked so hard. We all felt good to have won it. We all felt good to have won it. We were lucky it came our way and to finally win it, it gave us exceptional joy.

“Some players left the team and we are acquiring some new players also but the core of the team is still intact and blending or working with the new players hasn’t been a problem.

“If all the players are new, it would have been much more difficult but the majority of the old players are still in the team.

“It is not a problem that some of the players left the team because every season we must strive to be better. It has been fantastic so far.”

Finidi who is in his third season with Enyimba admitted that he could have walked away as the club’s coach had he failed to pick at least a continental ticket but was thrilled everything worked out well and they were able to win the league title and are representing Nigeria in the prestigious CAF Champions League.

“The pressure of Enyimba is foremost. Enyimba is a top team and top club that is the best in Nigeria and one of the best in Africa so they are always ready to win titles. If you come to Enyimba, you must be ready to withstand the pressure because it is a team that wants to win and as coach you must be ready to work,” the 52-year-old revealed.

“If I had not won the league title or picked a continental ticket at the end of two seasons, I don’t think I would have remained the coach of Enyimba.

“It would have been a very poor outing for me personally and I don’t think the club would have kept me for another season. I wouldn’t have walked away if I had not picked at least a continental ticket.

“I am happy things have turned out this way. We are all happy with how things have gone.

“Last season has gone and we just have to focus on what we are to do this season,” he enthused,

The ex-Real Mallorca winger also revealed what he would do to ensure that they get their fans to come watch them at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo knowing that they would be playing their CAF Champions League and African Football League matches there.

“We expected to have a large number this season. Since we won the league we expect them to come and support the team. That is what we expect. Playing in the continent will help to bring the fans to the stadium,” Finidi opined.

“We will see how that works out. We on our part will continue to work hard to make sure everything improves. We cannot do otherwise. Our job is to make the players better and work with them. Create the atmosphere for them to strive. We will try to play good football to attract fans back to the stadium.”

Finidi praised the conduct of the match officials in the abridged league last season scoring them over 80 percent for their spot on decisions.

He nonetheless urged them to seek improvement as the new season draws closer so that the negative view of Nigerian referees would be replaced with positive comments.

“I believe my first and my second season are two different seasons. My first season, we played a full season while the second was an abridged one. We saw a great improvement from the referees during the abridged league season. It was quite different from my first season. The referees did a good job but it wasn’t 100 percent and it will continue to get better.

“We are still working hard to be perfect also, but we can never have a perfect human being in life. They deserve commendation for the job they did last season. It is not easy without the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) and a lot of decisions would be difficult to call. We just hope my third season will be a good one also.”

The Ipswich former player further added that they needed a bit of luck to win the league title last season and that after a very rigorous preseason activities they expect to repeat the league crown and also make a meaningful impact in Africa.

“We just have to be fortunate because I know every coach in the league is working hard to improve their team. For me, everything just fell in place.

“We had the luck despite the fact that we were competing with other top teams and we were able to win it. It doesn’t mean we worked more than others because other coaches were doing their job as well but everything just worked well for us.”

Finidi said he would have proceeded to study a course at the university and probably work full time in a company of choice if not for football.

He said he doesn’t fancy going after the latest fashion and that though he drove exotic and expensive cars while he was a professional footballer, he has kept a low profile since his retirement with concentration on preparing for life after retirement from the game.

He said: “I would have gone to the university to study and probably used it to get a job. I have driven all the good cars while still active as a professional footballer. For me, cars are liabilities. It doesn’t add any value. It depreciates yearly. Today I just have a car and I’m cool with that.”

Finidi played together with current Enyimba chairman, Kanu Nwankwo at Ajax Amsterdam with the duo winning the UEFA Champions League together in 1995 and despite the age difference between them, the coach noted that both could work without issues if they both concentrate on the tasks of ensuring Enyimba remain at the top.

“When there is a change in a club it might affect the team negatively or positively,” he admitted. “For us as coaches, we only concentrate on getting the players to be in the right frame of mind and let them play good football.

“My job is to coach. I am senior to Kanu Nwankwo but that is life for you. Today you are somewhere and tomorrow you might be in another place.

“Today he is the chairman of Enyimba and I am a coach and I have to do my job irrespective of what is happening.

“He is the chairman and was my colleague at Ajax but we are all professionals on the job. Definitely he will do his job as we are all here to serve Enyimba.”

George however urged active Super Eagles players and others to invest in real estate to prevent financial difficulties when they quit active football.

Over the years, several retired Super Eagles players have been seen struggling to survive life after football due to their poor investment choices or lack of investments.

To prevent that from happening to the current Super Eagles players, George, who is also the team’s assistant coach, has urged the players not to invest in unfamiliar ventures.

“My best advice for active players now is to invest in property because it’s the best way to secure their money as the value appreciates and they will have something to fall back on,” George said

“If they invest in a business that they are not sure of they will have problems.”

The Enyimba coach admitted that the road to retaining the league title would be tough but that they have set that as their target

“We will compete. We will do our best to ensure we repeat what we did last season. It is not going to be easy but that is our aim for the season,” he added.

When quizzed what would be his next line of action if he leaves Enyimba, George said that his emphasis would be to have another great season with the team and thereafter place everything on the table before agreeing to either seek an new adventure or continue with the People’s Elephant.

“We will see what happens. We have to finish the season first in a good way and we shall see what happens next. Alex Ferguson stayed at Manchester United for how long? Who knows If everything goes well and we are winning titles!

“One might have to prolong his stay. We will see what happens. We must get the job done first and then think about if I am staying or going elsewhere. My focus is to do well.”

The One time Real Betis player thumbed up all the coaches he had worked with stating that they had a positive impact in his life and career as a coach.

He could not stake his bet on just one of them because he said each coach implanted something positive in him which he still uses to carry out his day to day activities with his players.

“I have worked with lots of coaches and I can’t just single out just one. From Guus Hindink, Louis van Gaal, Clemens Westerhof, Luis Arangones, and so many others.

“I have picked something from each of them. All the experiences we have garnered from those great coaches we use as guidelines in what we do now,” he added.

Finidi George is positive Enyimba will get the adequate  result to steer the Nigeria Premier Football League reigning champions to the next round of the CAF Champions League ahead of Libyan side, Al Ahly Benghazi

The People’s Elephant put up a shambolic defensive performance at the Martyrs of Benina Stadium in Benghazi on Sunday to lose the game 4-3.

The People’s Elephant held on until almost the end but were undone by Hamadi Gadallah’s stoppage time goal which handed Ahly Benghazi a slender first leg advantage.

“We are sad that we lost the game after a great performance from the boys. It could have easily ended in a draw but for that late goal we conceded,” Finidi said.

“I must commend the players for putting up a great fight against a very formidable home team. The crowd was also intimidating but our players did not let that affect them.

“Of course, there are areas that we must improve upon, but looking at the game generally, I see more positives than negatives,” he added.

Ahead of the return fixture in Aba on Sunday, Finidi said: “In Aba it’s going to be a different ball game. We will approach the game differently and hopefully we will win it.

“We know it’s not going to be easy but I think the players know what’s at stake and having played this well here (in Benghazi), going back to Aba with our home support, it’s going to be different and hopefully we are going to win it.”
