
Thousands of shoppers were evacuated from the Delta Mall popularly known as Shoprite complex in Effurun, Uvwie Local Government area of Delta state yesterday afternoon over the outbreak of a mysterious fire.
Though the cause of the fire was unknown as at press time, it was gathered it emanated from one of the restrooms.
The outbreak came barely one week after armed youths invaded and looted some shops in the mall, which is located at the popular Effurun roundabout in the Urhobo town.
“We were moving about from shop to shop when pandemonium broke out. When we asked what was happening, we were told that there was fire.
“Everybody ran outside and it was while we were there that we heard that the fire started from the toilet,” a shopper told our reporter.
The fire was successfully put out by workers and firefighters about one hour after it started.
But most of the shoppers were too scared to return.
Though there was no loss of live or injuries, the extent of the devastation was not known immediately.
Police Public Relations Officer in Delta Command, DSP Celestina Kalu, who was contacted, said she was yet to be briefed on the incident.

No fewer than 20 persons were confirmed dead Thursday in Nnewi, Anambra State, when fire outbreak gutted a factory belonging to Chikason group of company.
As at the time the gas station belonging to Chikason group caught fire all the buildings around the gas station were vibrating.

A fire outbreak was on Tuesday reported at a building along Allen Avenue, Ikeja.
The building which is located on 11, Wole Ogundimu Street off Awosika, Allen Avenue, was smoke logged fire service men arrived the scene.

The management of ASCON filling station at Lekki phase 1 that cut fire on Thursday have debunked rumours of casualties, saying
‘no life was lost’.
The station, in a statement, said the fire was an accident compounded by the current fuel scarcity in the country with ASCON OIL being one of the few stations with a reliable steady supply even in times of scarcity.
“Contrary to earlier speculations, the main building and the reservoirs are unaffected.
“The incident emanated from a discharge at the point of offloading product from a tanker, engulfing two tankers and some vehicles parked by the road side.
“No life was lost to the incident, the pumps are intact and emergency fire service officers were already on site containing the flames as at the time of this report,” the statement read in part.
ASCON further reaffirmed its commitment to serving its customers ‘even in the face of accidents of this nature for which a company of its pedigree is always prepared.
The company extended gratitude to residents and passers-by that showed solidarity with the company as they contributed in no small way to contain the flames.”
