  • Fire station: Fed Govt partners Akwa Ibom

    The Akwa Ibom State government has signed a deal with the Federal Government to site a metropolitan fire station for the Southsouth in Uyo, the state capital.

    Governor Udom Emmanuel spoke yesterday when he granted  audience to the Comptroller General of Fire Service, EngineerAnebi Joseph Garba who led a delegation of Fire Officials to the Government House, Uyo on a courtesy call to the State Chief Executive.

    Emmanuel said the state government has provided land for the construction of the metropolitan fire station, adding the facility will be easily accessible without traffic congestion and suitable for the discharge of their responsibility.

    He expressed appreciation to the Federal Fire Service for the decision to set up a zonal office in the state noting that it will compliment government’s efforts at setting up an emergency centre in conjunction with the state Ministry of Health, and other related services.

    The governor made a case for the employment of indigenes of the state by the Federal Fire Service and promised to assist in certain aspects of logistics and other things.

    He stated that the state was not taking their coming to Akwa Ibom for granted as shown in the calibre of stakeholders invited to be part of the courtesy call by the State Government and assured the officials of a successful stay in the course of work in Akwa Ibom.

    The Comptroller General, Federal Fire Service,  Anebi Joseph Garba , said the purpose of the visit was to request for a suitable land for the construction of a metropolitan-type fire station for the Southsouth in Uyo.

    According to  Anebi, the decision to site the office in Akwa Ibom is sequel to approval by the Federal Government for the construction of such station in the six geopolitical zones in the country.

    He said the service would soon commence the strengthening of its presence in Akwa Ibom with the deployment of multi-million naira fire fighting assets and personnel.

  • Ambode approves four LASEMA Response Units, fire station

    Governor Akinwunmi Ambode has approved the establishment of four Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Dispatch Centres and a fire station to improve response time during emergency.

    Commissioner for Special Duties Oluseye Oladejo said this at a meeting for all emergency stakeholders organised by LASEMA to review the state’s Emergency Response Plan (ERP).

    According to Oladejo, the dispatch centres would be located at Temu, Ikorodu, Costain and Badagry, adding that all the centres would be delivered this year.

    Oladejo said Ambode has also approved the establishment of a fire station in Ijegun.

    He said: “We want to significantly reduce delay in responding to emergency situations and in achieving this, we recognise the role of all relevant stakeholders.

    “With concerted efforts to save lives and property within the ‘Golden Hour’, the establishment of more LRUs will complement these efforts and this will automatically result in deployment of more equipment and training of our personnel occurrences.”

    LASEMA General Manager Adesina Tiamiyu said the meeting was to avoid discordant tunes among emergency responders.

    He said the gathering would afford stakeholders the opportunity of in-depth review of their roles in disaster prevention, response and recovery.

    According to Tiamiyu, LASEMA as the coordinating agency was committed to ensuring that all emergency responders were up-to-date with international best practices and are provided tools required to do their jobs.

    “This is because of the compelling necessity of effective disaster management. It is more so, since all over the world, surmounting emergencies take the collaborative efforts of the stakeholders on one hand, and the collaboration of the populace,” he said.

    Tiamiyu decried the continued stay of tankers and containers on bridges, saying they pose dangers to residents and motorists.

    Director, Lagos State Fire Service, Rasaq Fadipe said the department recorded 484 fire incidents in January.

    Rapid Response Squad (RRS) Commander Olatunji Disu spoke on the need for residents to give way to his men on rescue mission.

    Community gets first grassroots fire station

    To facilitate quick response to fires in his domain, Yaba Local Council Development Area (LCDA) chairman Olajide Jimoh has built a fire service station.

    Opening the facility, Jimoh said the council also provided fire-fighting trucks with a structure to house them and ready water supply among others.

    He praised the management of Lagos State Fire Service which, he said, gave the council “absolute cooperation,” especially by training personnel to man the station.

    Jimoh said the need for programmes that would enhance residents’ standard of living informed the decision to build the facility.

    Governor Babatunde Fashola lauded the council chief for being the first in the country to build a fire station.

    Fashola’s spoke during the passing out of the 17 fire fighters through the Commissioner for Home Affairs and Culture, Oyilomo Danmole. He urged other council chiefs to emulate Jimoh to complement government’s efforts to ensure safety of citizens and their property.

    The Controllers General, Federal Fire Service, Mr. Olusegun Okebiorun, also hailed the “good initiative” of the council, saying that it would be of benefit to the people.

    A statement from the Federal Fire Service, Abuja, signed by Assistant Controller (Corporate Service), Mr. Elechi Collins, reads: “This initiative is worthy of emulation and highly commendable because of its importance in the drive towards prevention and other emergencies in the country… it is a demonstration of good governance.”

    Director of Lagos State Fire Service, Mr. Razak Idowu Fadipe also praised Jimoh, saying: “I am elated that the Yaba Local council chairman has keyed into the focus of this administration. When the governor first came on board, he observed that we had only eight power stations; he swiftly added five more.  Now two more power stations are currently under construction and will be due for inauguration this year.”

  • Ejigbo LCDA gets fire station, other projects

    As part of activities marking 2000 days in office of the Chairman, Ejigbo Local Council Development Area, (LCDA), Lagos State, Mr Kehinde Bamigbetan, the council inaugurated yesterday a fire service station, potable water reticulation and an abattoir.

    The other projects are: Dele Alake Public Primary School, Ailegun and Ibrahim Nass, Double Star, Kayode Powerline and Jubril Olabisi roads.

    Former Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Lagos State, Mr Dele Alake who inagurated the fire station, said Bamigbetan had justified the creation of LCDAs in the state in 2003.

    He praised the chairman for bringing the dividends of democracy to the people of Ejigbo and its environs.

    He said being the chairman would definitely not be Bamigbetan’s last post because he should be recommended by his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), for other posts.

    Alake described the council chair as “a leader of men”, adding that he should do more as “reward of hardwork is more work”.

    Bamigbetan described the projects being inaugurated as people-oriented ones designed to reduce suffering and make life easy for the people.

    He said the inaugurated primary school was named after Alake to show gratitude to him for what he and other information managers did to actualise the LCDA in the state.

    The chairman said: “Without their engagement and relentless defence of the primacy of popular rule, we might not have an Ejigbo LCDA to call our own. And the opportunity that 36 other chairmen and I got to add value to the lives of the people might never arise.”

    Alake promised a donation of N500,000 to the council for the establishment of an e-Library in the school to assist pupils in their pursuit of academic excellence.

    Anambra community to build fire station

    Nigeria Immigration Office, Anambra State office, is to be located at Agulu in Anaocha Local Government Area.

    President General of Agulu Peoples Union , Chief Paulinus Aniagboso who announced this in his address to the community, said the community donated three plots to them for their building.

    ‘’The survey plan of the land is ready and we have alread sent same to the state Immigration Headquarters at Awka. We are waiting for their reply.

    “We solicit for individuals that will help us erect some structures on the site because we need to secure this project in our town.

    ‘’Through the goodwill of Governor Peter Obi, we gave the state fire service  three plots of land for the building of a fire service station project at Oye Agulu-Umuowelle village. The survey plan has been completed and we are waiting for work to start. The site of the proposed tire station is a hilly area with deposits of sands and stones. So we had an agreement with I.D.C Construction Company to dig a burrow pit and excavate the sands for their bridge construction. The I.U.C Company has paid the sum of N1.4 million into our account. This shows dire shrewdness, transparency and accountability of our administration’’.

    Aniagboso announced that the drainage at Okechinyere junction and Uhume village has been reconstructed with the assistance of the state government for easy flow of flood water.

    He revealed plans to erect  a skill acquisition centre for their youths as a means to curb their propensity to criminal tendencies.

    Aniagboso said the hospital has been upgraded to a specialist unit attached to Anambra State University Teaching Hospital, Amaku, Awka and that the construction work on new buildings have already begun.The contract is being handled by Vivid Construction Company.

    He said further: ‘’Governor Peter Obi and Mr. Leo Imoka’s made Agulu to be chosen as location for the construction of Agro Processing and training centre for livestock feed production in Anambra State . This is a Federal Government project under the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development. We are very privileged that our town was chosen from-Anambra State for the siting of dye project. The FMARD has given us the size of the land required for the project. We have approved the land and final documentation and drawing of survey plan is in progress. They promised to start work on the site soonest’’.

    He further informed that a maternity ward will be constructed in Agulu by the state government under a UNICEF programme sponsored by   Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. He said three plots of land were mapped out for the project. The survey plan has been handed over to them and work on the site will start soonest.

    The Agulu President General added that chairman of ASWAMA, Mrs. Njideka Oraedum, has been briefed on the benefits of including Agulu (Nwagu area in particular) under the State Capital coverage area on daily sanitation. He said Obi had spent over N40 million in schools in Agulu.

    On fencing of Agulu Town Hall , he said ,’’ they have commenced work on the fencing of Agulu Town Hall . The fencing work included provisions for the new gates to be installed and a security house also be constructed. We are also installing protectors in windows and doors on both sides of the hall. Our target, all things being equal, is to relocate the workers in the pencil house back to the Town Hall before the end of this year.

    Agulu community will have its website by March, barring any unforeseen circumstance.

    He said one of their major challenges is security but thanked Obi for donating three security vans for the community which he said has assisted ,’’our security men record success in their fight against crime. They have caught some armed robbers and kidnappers within Agulu and its boundaries. We are still making efforts to improve on our success’’.

    He said: “Roads in Agulu including Nneogidi-Nise road is completed.  Obeagu-Agulu Aguiyi road is completed. Obeagu/Nkitaku-Ronasco road is equally completed.Work has finished on Madonna-UgwuUgolo road. Through our diplomatic efforts, the governor approved a spur to Nkwo Agulu which was not included before in the design of the road. Work is currently in progress. Nwancbi-Obeledu road work is in progress. Contract for General Hospital road (passing through Nkitaku/Obe/Amoji/ Odidama and Nneolia has been awarded and work has started. The construction of the Agulu lake bridge with two walkways is in top gear. The plan has provision for the installation of street lights on the bridge’’.

    ‘’Civil work is currently on course at the site and it is expected to be completed and handed over to the Anambra Stale Government by the contractor, a Chinese company, at the end of February 2014.”

    Bank donates fire station to varsity

    Wema Bank Plc has donated a fire service station to the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun as part of its corporate social responsibility (CSR).

    The gesture, according to its Zonal Manager, Mr Oluwasegun Olawepo, was motivated by the bank’s commitment to the wellbeing of its host-community.

    Presenting the building to the management of OAU, Olawepo said: “It is always good to be in a serene environment. Wema Bank is proud to be associated with OAU.”

    He said the project took them months to complete. OAU, Olawepo noted, is blessed with a serene, peaceful and accommodating environment, which made the bank’s operations easy and smooth.

    “This is one of the several CSR projects because we feel it is appropriate to reward the community where we operate,” he said.

    The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Bamitale Omole, thanked the bank and challenged it to carry out more responsibilities.

    “This is a defining moment in the context of our Public-Private Partnership (PPP). One of our most important concessions when we assumed office was to have a good security outfit. With this beautiful building, we believe that our university can move to its desire,” he said.

    Tasking the bank to provide a fire truck for the operation, he expressed the administration’s appreciation for the gesture.

    The Principal Fire Officer, Mr Ibrahim Adediran, described the development as a dream come true, explaining that the unit was created after the 1982 and 1983 fires in the institution.

    “We used to call on fire service men from Lagere and Osogbo but it always takes time before they get to the scene. That was when the school management decided to purchase a fire truck for us,” he explained.

    Present at the event included the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Prof Ademola Ajayi, Librarian, Mrs Bukky Asubiojo, Bursar, Mrs Ronke Akeredolu, chairman, Security Committee, Prof Fabayo Ademola, Business Development Manager, Wema Bank, Mrs Eniola Oyedele, and the Chief Security Officer, Mr Paul Ogidi.
