  • Bank manager charged with N52.6m theft

    Customer Relationship Manager with First Bank Plc Headquarters in Lagos, Kehinde Adewuyi, who allegedly stole the bank’s N52,628,000, was on Tuesday brought before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Adewuyi, 36, of Onyema Close, Medina Estate, Gbagada, Lagos was arraigned by the Police Lion Building Division, Lagos, on a three-count charge of forgery and stealing.

    Prosecuting Counsel Reuben Solomon alleged via a charge marked H/28/2019 that the defendant committed the offence alongside two accomplices between February and March 2019 at the bank’s headquarters, during work hours.

    He said the alleged fraud was uncovered by First Bank following an audit of account books.

    Adewuyi was arrested by the police after the bank made a report through its Head of Forensic Auditors, Solomon Akhanolu and Owei Chris.

    The court heard that Adewuyi allegedly forged the signatures of the bank’s Relationship Manager, Mobolaji Sunmoni and Group Head, Ademola Adegbusi, and fraudulently withdrew the money from the bank’s accounts.

    He said the offences contravened sections 411, 365(1) and 287(7) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    Adewuyi pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate Davies granted him N250,000 bail with two sureties in the like sum, among other conditions.

    Davies ordered that the defendant be remanded at the Ikoyi Prison, Lagos till he perfected the bail terms.

    The case continues on June 25.

  • Awosika challenges youths on self-reliance

    Chairman, Board of Directors of First Bank Plc. Mrs Ibukun Awosika,  has urged Nigerian youths to be self-reliant and be optimistic in overcoming challenges of life.

    She made the call at a workshop organised by the bank for students of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) on Friday in Ile-Ife, Osun.

    While narrating her life experiences and how she climbed the ladder of success, Awosika advised youths to be prepared to be champions in any given society they might find themselves.

    She said that “the struggle of man which begins at birth is a necessity for every individual to face.

    “Every human must be determined to weather the storm of life, if success is desired.

    “Students should think of what they can do for Nigeria, rather than wait for what Nigeria can do for them because the country is a land of opportunities, despite all odds.

    “Our students should not allow the challenges of the nation to dampen their morale, rather, they should see themselves as one of those who will impact positively on the nation.”

    According to her, when the society changes for the better, the outcome will result in emergence of good leaders who will take the nation to greater height.

    The bank chairman, business magnate, author and motivational speaker said  “If every Nigerian is good, we won’t produce bad leaders” and urged the students to believe in themselves and be patriotic.

    She added that “every season is different in life and you can only succeed during your own season because it has its own time.

    “Ask yourselves as youths, how prepared are you to make your own impact during your season?.

    “You are accountable adults at this stage. Be old enough to discipline yourselves,” she counselled.

    Awosika also advised the students not to do what they wanted if left in an open ended setting, stressing that what they did would hunt them one day.

    Man arraigned for stealing N1.2m generator brain box

    A 25-year-old generator repairer, Emeka Okoli, who allegedly entered into a bank and stole a generator brain box valued at N1.2million, was on Monday in Lagos released on a N200,000 bail.

    Okoli, of no fixed address, entered a `not-guilty’ plea to the two-count charge of intent to commit felony and stealing.

    An Ikeja Magistrates’ Court which gave the ruling, also asked the accused to produce two sureties as part of the bail conditions.

    The Magistrate, Mrs O.J Awope, said the sureties must be gainfully employed and should show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

    According to the prosecutor, Insp. Ezekiel Ayorinde, the accused committed the offences on May 29 at Ilupeju, Lagos.

    He said that the accused unlawfully entered the First Bank premises at night and stole a giant generator’s brain box valued at N1.2million, property of First Bank Plc.

    “The accused jumped into the bank and went to the generator post, he came with sophisticated instruments to disconnect the brain box.

    “The two security guards on duty heard sound from the generator stand and they decided to check what was happening.

    “Immediately the accused sighted them coming towards him, he dropped the brain box and jumped the fence to escape.

    “The guards gave him a hot chase and he was apprehended and handed over to the police.

    “The brain box was recovered,” he said.

    The offences contravened Sections 308(2) and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).

    The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 308(2) prescribes a seven-year jail term for convicted offenders.

    The case was adjourned until June 19, for mention.

    Omu-Aran: First Bank re-opens after 3 years of closure

    The Omu-Aran branch of First Bank Plc, closed in May 2013 due to armed robbery attack, has been re-opened, the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports.

    NAN recalled that in Nov. 12, 2016 during the 2016 Annual Omu-Aran Festival of clubs, Mr Festus Egbodofo, Business Development Manager of First Bank in Kwara, announced that skeletal services would soon commence in Omu-Aran branch of the bank.

    In his goodwill message at the occasion, Egbodofo commended the people of Omu-Aran for their commitment to ensure adequate protection of lives and properties in the town.

    Investigation conducted by NAN correspondent indicated that the management of First Bank had in the last two weeks being renovating the bank’s building in Omu-Aran in readiness for banking operations.

    NAN correspondent, who visited the bank premises on Aperan Way on Tuesday, reports that skeletal services had indeed commenced at the bank.

    Several customers were seen carrying out transactions.

    A top official of the bank, who preferred anonymity, confirmed the development.

    He said that the bank would operate skeletal services from 10 a.m till 12 noon for the time being until restoration of normal services

    “As you can see, we have started attending to customers, especially regarding re-activating of old accounts and opening of new ones,” the source said.

    In his reaction to the development, the Olomu of Omu-Aran, Oba Charles Ibitoye, lauded the management of the bank for being sensitive to the plight of their customers since the indefinite closure.

    “We are most grateful for the honour done to us by the management of First Bank by fulfilling the promise of re-opening the branch made during the last Omu-Aran Festival of Clubs.

    Also speaking, Chief Suleiman Atolagbe-Labiaka, an iron rod merchant, thanked the Olomu-in-Council and members of Omu-Aran Development Association (ODA) for ensuring the re-opening of the bank’s branch.

    He said that the indefinite closure of the bank had impacted negatively on the socio-economic development of the community.

    In his reaction, Chief Bisi Adeyemi, President, ODA, pledged that the association would support the management and staff to ensure uninterrupted services at the bank.
