Manager of Chelsea Antonio Conte has provided update on the injury situation of Victor Moses who is a doubt for Nigeria upcoming friendly games against Senegal and Burkina Faso.

Moses limped out of Chelsea 1-0 win over Manchester United on Monday in an FA Cup quarterfinal tie played at Stamford Bridge. The injury brought about speculations that he could be set for a spell on the sidelines.

Speaking in his pre match conference monitored by Owngoalnigeria.com online editor, the Italian manager revealed that the wing back is among the players who trained fully ahead of their game against Stoke City tomorrow.

” Moses trained well today. I think he’s available but, before Stoke it’s important to check a couple of situations”, Conte said.

His statement could mean the 26 year old will be available for Nigeria for the March 23 and 27 friendly games against Senegal and Burkina Faso, if he comes out of the Stoke City game unscathed.

    A prize for keeping fit

In a routine drill contest organised for soldiers of the 14 Brigade Command in Abia State, a unit near Aba, the commercial capital of the region, shone and it was accordingly honoured, Sunny Nwankwo reports

There is no war, but that does not mean soldiers should forget about keeping fit and being better combatants. That was why the 14 Brigade Command Headquarters of Nigerian Army in Ohafia, named after former President Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, brought together over 200 soldiers from various formations to go through their routine drill. And to spice things up and inject serious into it, the battalions had to vie for a prize. The 144 Battalion in Ukwa West Local Government Area of the state won the prize: a golden cup.

The exercise was in compliance with the directives of the new Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen Tukur Yusuf Buratai.

Brig-Gen Bamidele Omozoje, the brigade commander, urged officers and men under his command to work harder to reach the point of proficiency required to enable them fulfil their constitutional roles.

Omozoje who also was the review officer of the competition stated that the need for the exercise could not be over-emphasised, adding that drill provides the command with the opportunity to evaluate the performance of soldiers.

Speaking further, the brigade commander  said that the competition was part of the scheduled training arrangements for the Nigerian Army as directed by the COAS.

“The activities we are witnessing today are part of the training activities scheduled for this year 2015 and we have decided to go ahead with it despite all the challenges in line with the Chief or Army Staff’s vision to have a very professionally responsive Nigerian army in the discharge of its constitutional roles.

“And so we are here this morning to witness the…inter-battalion drill competition. In the army drill is key because it is the foundation for establishing team work among its personnel and also for building comradeship.

“That is why we are here this morning. I urge all participants to put up a very good display so that at the end of the whole exercise everybody who is present would have gained something”, he said.

He thanked all the soldiers who participated in the exercise including guests for being part of the programme and contributing to its success.

Four units of the military formations in Abia state took part in the event which lasted for about four hours.

The participating units included 14 Brigade, Ohafia; the 144 Battalion, Asa; 143 Battalion, Ovim hosting Nigerian Army Language School and 145 Battalion, Ohafia with its Forward Operational Base (FOB) at Umuahia.

The competition ended with 144 Battalion, Asa in Ukwa West adjudged the best in the drills competition and were presented with a Golden Cup by Omozoje which was received by 2nd Lt. Noah Shigaba on behalf of the 144 Battalion Commander, Lt. Col. Sidi Umar.

Kayode Olanrewaju says he’s not fit yet

Kayode Olanrewaju has declared that he has not yet attained maximum fitness even though he was involved in the test game against Anthony Ujah’s Werder Bremen in Belek, Turkey on Friday.

The former Flying Eagles star missed Austria Vienna’s last game before the winter break, having picked up an ankle injury against Wolfsberger AC in the Bundesliga.

“I discussed with Anthony Ujah before and after the game, we just encouraged each other, ” said Kayode to allnigeriasoccer.com.

“Concerning my fitness, I will say I am 80 per cent, I am getting stronger and better. ”

With the January transfer window in full swing, Kayode Olanrewaju has pledged his future to Austria Vienna, stating he will not be jumping ship for now.

Emenike, Haruna battling to be fit

Two out of the 18 foreign based players that were invited by coach Sunday Oliseh ahead of next month to the AFCON 2017 qualifiers, Emmanuel Emenike and Lukman Haruna are in a race to be fit for the game against Tanzania.

Although Anzhi Makhachkala Lukman Haruna claimed the thigh injury that lead to his substitution in his team 3- 2 loss to Dinamo Moscow, in the Premier League on August 8 isn’t as bad as initially feared and he is already back in training, but reports coming out of Russia suggest he might spend a week or two on the sidelines, if the fitness test before this weekend game proved otherwise.

On his part Emmanuel Emenike who scored twice for Al-Ain in last week’s UAE Super Cup 4-2 victory over Al-Nasr, pulled a muscle in training that has now made him a doubt for his loan side opening game of the league.

Emenike has had a long battle with his muscle in his past seasons in Turkey with Fenerbache, although this time around initial reports indicate he might be out for five or six days although no test have been done yet.

Both players are expected to be in the Nigeria camp four days before the September 8 game against Tanzania in Dar Es Salam.

Eagles land in Point Noire, 100 per cent fit

The Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles arrived the Congolese city of Point Noire 2:30am on Friday morning and after passing through immigration proceedings were checked into Atlantic Palace Hotel in the heart of the city.

The team made up of 25 players, the technical crew led by Big Boss Stephen Keshi, NFF President Amaju Pinnick who led the delegation, Senate Committee Chairman on Sports, Alhaji Adamu Gumba among others have since settled down for the business of getting three points off the host on Saturday afternoon.

It was drama at the airport as over 100 Nigerians resident in Congo, kept vigil to welcome the team with familiar songs, drumming and dancing. They were joined by the Nigerian Football and Other Sports Supporters Club, led by Dr Rauf Ladipo. The atmosphere was very lively as they mobbed the coaching crew and players while seizing the rare opportunity of taking photos with the Nigerian team.

Head Coach, Stephen Keshi was however not happy with reports that the team was riddled with injuries, inferring that the team was actually 100 percent fit at the moment. “Mikel is super fit, Enyeama (Vincent), had a slight shoulder strain and he’s also  in perfect shape now, Raheem Lawal had knock during our last training session and he has since bounced back. So we should stop scaring Nigerians with reports that the team is injury hit”, he declared after conferring with team doctor, Ibrahim Gyaran.

The team had a feel of the Stade Omnisport where it will tango the host at 3:30pm local time, which is the same time with Nigeria and the same time the game will be played on Saturday.

  • Keshi: Moses not fit

    Keshi: Moses not fit

Stephen Keshi has told AfricanFootball.com he left out Victor Moses from Nigeria’s AFCON 2015 qualifiers against Congo and South Africa because the forward has lost form.

Victor Moses, who has joined English Premier League side Stoke City, was conspicuously missing from Keshi’s 23-man squad, released on Tuesday for next month’s AFCON qualifiers against Congo and South Africa.

“I watched Victor Moses at Chelsea’s pre-season and he seemed to be struggling as he had limited play time with the club,” Keshi told only AfricanFootball.com.

“Now that he has joined Stoke City, I think he needs time to get back to the player we know him to be.

“I think it’s time he made up his mind what he wants, if he wants to play football or not.”

After emerging as one of Nigeria’s top stars at last year’s Africa Cup of Nations in South Africa, Victor Moses missed the FIFA Confederations Cup in Brazil on account of injury, before he struggled to make an impact at the recent World Cup.

Last season, he endured a torried time at Liverpool after he was shipped out on loan by Chelsea and this season, he has again been released on loan to Stoke City as he does not figure in Jose Mourinho’s plans.

  • ‘I’m mentally fit’

The Students’ Union President of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijagun, Ogun State, Sunday Ekeyokpa, has denied being mentally unstable from the injury he sustained during the June 10 protest on campus.

A paper reported on June 16 that Ekeyokpa was injured during the students’ protest over the management’s decision that they must pay up their tuition fees before sitting for examination. The aggrieved students were said to have paid their fees but the university e-portal did not confirm their payment while the authorities insisted no student must be allowed into the halls without evidence of payment.

In a press release obtained by CAMPUSLIFE, Ekeyokpa decried the false report.

He said: “I believe the press should serve as the voice of the voiceless and not a means to satisfy the need of a politician who derives joy in causing chaos among the student populace.”

“I seize this opportunity to tell the world that I am mentally fit and sound. The Ogun State Hospitals Management has carried out a series of tests on me and I was issued a certificate of fitness,” the statement read in part.

    Echiejile: I’m fit again

“We are now in Austria to train till July 12 after which we will return to Monaco,” he said.

He is expected to enjoy a better run with the big-spending French club in the new season following the arrival of his former coach at Braga, Leonardo Jardim.
