    District workers walk for fitness

rincipals, administrative officers and directors of the Lagos State Education District II took a break from educational administration to walk for fitness last Tuesday.

They walked and danced from the District headquarters within the Maryland Schools’ complex through Mende and Mobolaji Bank Anthony back to Maryland.

The exercise was led by the Tutor-General permanent Secretary of the district, Mrs Titilayo Solarin, who said she organised the walk for the first time in the history of the district to improve the health of the principals and directors and enhance their productivity.

“We realised that people have not been exercising recently and as a result there is so much illness; officers are not performing well.  I think that a healthy body should be able to perform well and that’s why we are organising this for the first time in this district.

“We also organised free health checks for our officers and principals.  We have done it before for teachers and other staff and we still hope to organise such a thing again,” she said.

She promised to make it a monthly exercise.  After the walk, she thanked the participants drawn from Kosofe, Somolu and Ikorodu zones as well as the officers from the district headquarters for taking their time off work to walk for health.

Mrs Ramota Dairo, Director, Co-curricular Services, was particularly happy about the initiative because it falls within her area of specialisation, Physical and Health Education. She said the walk would be followed by aerobics in future.

“We want to encourage our teachers and workers that at their own free time they should continue to do this.  Apart from this we are planning aerobics programmes for our workers and that one is only dance,” she said.

Principal of Community Senior Secondary School, Bayeku, Ikorodu, Mrs Flora Kara, said the programme served not only to recharge their batteries but to network with colleagues they had not seen for long.

“This initiative is a very good one because most times we don’t have time to exercise.  But with this, compulsorily we have done it and we enjoyed it as a group. We danced, we walked and we are looking healthy.  We benefited not only regarding fitness but networking.  For example some of us have not seen for a long period of time. I am from Ikorodu; some are from Somolu; some are from Kosofe. It has brought us together to interact with one another,” she said.

    Teachers walk for fitness

Vehicular traffic was brought to a halt at Ojo Local Government Area of Lagos when primary school teachers took to the streets to engage in a walk for fitness exercise.

The teachers adorned in blue ‘Walk for fitness’ branded shirts jogged for five kilometres from Ilogbo, Badagry Road to Ojo town.

The quarterly exercise, first in its series, engaged both teaching and non-teaching staff, as well as food vendors of the Ojo Local Government Education Authority (LGEA), Oto Awori and Iba Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) as well as the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB) in about four hours of brisk walking and aerobics.

Ojo LGEA Education Secretary Tolani Sule who led the walk, said the exercise was to create awareness on physical fitness for teachers beyond classroom teaching of the subject.

He said: “We want to ensure that there is a correlation between physical fitness and mental health of the teachers. We found out that it is a healthy, fit and sound teacher that would be able to do the job efficiently. So we tried to look out for other things we could do besides the efforts of the state government to make teachers happy and healthy. We therefore decided that at every term in the session, we would hold a fitness walk of about five kilometres to keep us fit.”

Sule stressed that ailments such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, among others would be ostracised with routine exercise.

Dr Rahimi Morounfolu, a lecturer at the department of Physical and Health Education, Lagos State University (LASU), stressed the importance of relieving stress through regular exercises.

Speaking at the St. Micheals Primary School, Ojo, where the teachers gathered for aerobics after the walk, he said: “Stress is your body’s reaction to situations around you. Chronic stress usually has a delayed but prolonged effect on the individual, which is more dangerous than acute stress. It quickly degenerates into distress when not taken care of. However, the most effective non-medical way of handling stress is exercise, especially brisk walking, which engages all muscles, vessels and parts of the body.”

Dr Morounfolu, who opined that women are more prone to chronic stress than men due to combination of officer work with housekeeping, appealed to the men to assist their wives at home to relieve them of the stress.

West Brom coach, Tony Pulis, is sweating on the fitness of Brown Ideye ahead of Tuesday’s English Premiership clash away to Aston Villa.

Before the 1 – 0 win over Southampton, the Nigeria international was given pain-killing injections, but failed to complete the game nonetheless, with the striker replaced two minutes from time.

“Brown Ideye and Saido were both carrying knocks even before the game,” Tony Pulis was quoted as saying by Birmingham Mail.

“It just shows they have got good spirit in the dressing room and people want to play.

“Saido had an injection before the game and maybe he should have one before every game, scoring goals like that.”

Also, 2008 Beijing Olympics silver medalist Victor Anichebe faces a late fitness test, ahead of the game at Villa Park.

•Achor Philip out of the league season

Heartland’s Julius Ubido, Ebele Obi, Osas Okoro and Emmanuel Iwu will today face late fitness tests for the Naze Millionaires’ Glo Premier League Week 36 tie against FC Taraba at the Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri on Sunday.

The trio of Ubido, Okoro and Iwu didn’t make the short trip to Umuahia for their Oriental Derby against Abia Warriors which ended 1-1 because they suffered knocks in their last home game against Warri Wolves and the tie before that.

Ebele Obi – the elder brother of Chelsea of England midfielder, John Mikel Obi – was billed to man the post against Abia Warriors but he sustained an injury in the warm up to the tie and was replaced by another goalkeeper, Chinedu Udeh who had the best game of his Heartland career against the Umuahia side, according to reports.

Heartland’s Media Officer, Cajetan Nkwopara told SportingLife that the players’ fitness would be tested today before they would be passed fit or otherwise ahead of the league game against FC Taraba on Sunday.

Heartland are on 51 points from 35 games and they are up against the Jalingo Boys who are on 46 points from 35 games.

Nkwopara also disclosed that Heartland players and officials are wishing their injured goalkeeper, Emmanuel Philip Achor who underwent a hip surgery speedy recovery.

The goaltender suffered the injury in the club’s final training session against Enyimba at Aba in Week 29 and has been ruled out of the season.

EMIRATES CLASH: Bruce to assess Aluko for fitness

Super Eagles ace Sam Aluko will be properly assessed for fitness ahead of Hull City’s away clash against Arsenal.  Hull City coach

Steve Bruce, who gave  the hint, said players returning to international duties will not be thrown into the Emirates clash unless the medical team confirms they are fit enough to play for 90 minutes.

Sone Aluko and teammate Mohamed Diame endured long flights to link up with Senegal and Nigeria respectively and Bruce hinted that the players would be left out if they show signs of fatigue as a result of jet lag and hard fought victory against their opponents in the AFCON qualifiers.

“We’ll have to look at Diame and Aluko because they only played on Wednesday night.

“No matter who you are, if you’re hanging around airports, going on long-haul flights, playing games – you’re going to be fatigued.

“It isn’t fair on the players. We’ve got four or five who have been flying through the time zones, so we’ll have a look at them and see how bright they are,” he said

While Aluko had a good ride as the Super Eagles achieved a 3-1 victory over Sudan, same cannot be said of teammate Mohamed Diame as the Teranga Lions were beaten 1-0 by Tunisia.  Aluko came in as a second half substitute in Nigeria’s tie against Sudan on Wednesday at the Abuja National Stadium.  The 3-1 victory did not, however, stop the Glass House from showing Keshi the exit door.

Bruce would be hoping to earn a point at the Emirates coming after his side’s 2-0 home victory over Crystal Palace.   The victory against Palace remains the side’s only victory in five premiership matches including a 4-2 defeat at home by Manchester United

  • Fitness relief for Azarenka

    Fitness relief for Azarenka

Former world   number one Victoria Azarenka has said she is glad to be back competing following her recent injury nightmare.

The Belarusian has been plagued by a foot injury over the last few months, crashing out in the second round of Wimbledon, a competition in which she looked extremely rusty having barely played in the first half of the season.

Fortunately, her fitness woes seem to be behind her and she can now turn her attentions to the final Grand Slam of the year, the US Open, an event she reached the final of in 2013.

However, after all of her problems with injury, the two-time Australian Open champion says she now has a new perspective on the game and has found a way to enjoy her tennis again.

“Yes, it’s more fun now. Sometimes you need a little bit of a break,” he told Tennis Space. “But maybe not a break as long as that, and not a forced break.

“You do realise, when you’re away, how much you enjoy it. When you’re caught in a daily routine, maybe you don’t realise that.I’ve found a better way to enjoy tennis.”

  • Mikel sure of fitness

    Mikel sure of fitness

Chelsea midfield ace, John Mikel Obi, finally arrived the Metropolitan camp of the Super Eagles on Wednesday afternoon, after his protracted battle to get a Ukrainian visa for his side’s UEFA Champions League game next week. The player has already said he was super fit for the encounter against Liberia.

The development had kept Mikel away from the Super Eagles camp since Monday, leading to speculations that the player might be in Nigeria and was avoiding the national team’s camp. That was finally put to rest when Mikel breezed into camp on Wednesday at lunch time. Head Coach Stephen Keshi said he was not sure that the Chelsea midfielder even got the Ukrainian visa and may have forced the protocol team at Chelsea to release his passport for the Nigeria versus Liberia game on Saturday.

“We must reduce the level of speculation on our top players as that could dampen their spirit and affect performance on the pitch. Mikel is here now and ready to play on Saturday and if we found him suitable, he would be played because he has shown enough national commitment,” Keshi said.

The coach called on Nigerians to keep praying for the team, as the team is thinking of the Nigerian people and President Goodluck Jonathan, who personally visited the team during its training session for the first leg encounter in Monrovia. “I will not be here talking to you if I think the job of qualifying Nigeria for the Nations Cup is too big for me but I need the support of all Nigerians including critics of the team and together we can take the national team to greater heights,” Keshi said during a media interaction in Calabar on Wednesday.
