Flick wary of Leganes threat as Barca target LaLiga lead

LaLiga leaders Barcelona will not take Leganes lightly and are expecting a tough test at the Estadio Municipal de Butarque  today with the home side fighting to stay up, manager Hansi Flick said on the eve of the match.

While Barca have the opportunity to extend their advantage atop the standings, where they are four points clear of second-placed Real Madrid with eight rounds of matches left, Leganes are 18th  with 28 points, two points below the safety zone.

The Catalans will be out to avenge a shock 1-0 home loss in December to Leganes, who also beat third-placed Atletico Madrid in January and nearly upset Real before losing 3-2 in March.

“They’re a team that defends very well and they know how to attack deep. We have to be careful in this match because now we’re first and we have to prove it. They’re also fighting against relegation. It will be a tough game,” Flick told reporters.

Barcelona appoint Flick as new boss

Barcelona have appointed former Bayern Munich boss Hansi Flick as their new boss on a two-year contract.

Flick, was who sacked by Germany in September 2023, takes over from Xavi, who was sacked last week.

Flick’s stint with Germany came after he guided Bayern Munich to a treble in 2020, winning the Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League.

Barcelona forward Robert Lewandowski, 35, played under Flick at the Allianz Arena for two seasons.

“It’s a big honour, a dream for me to sign my contract here,” said Flick on Wednesday.

“We won some titles with Bayern Munich and my hunger is really big for titles.

“I would like to stay on this path with Barcelona and I think we can achieve a lot together and this is an important thing.

“The philosophy they have is similar to mine, lots of possession and really attacking football and these other things I love.”

Departing Barcelona boss Xavi, who was sacked a month after the club confirmed he would stay, said his successor will “suffer” in the role.

He guided Barcelona to La Liga and Spanish Super Cup glory in his first full season in charge but this season the Catalan giants finished 10 points short of La Liga champions Real Madrid.

In a statement on Wednesday, external Barcelona said it had “chosen a man well known for his teams’ high pressing, intense and daring style of play which has brought him great success at club level and international level, winning pretty much all there is to win in the world of football”.

Flick has been out of work since he was sacked by Germany eight months ago.

Germany sack coach Flick ahead of Euro 2024

Germany have sacked coach Hansi Flick just nine months from hosting Euro 2024 after Saturday’s humiliating 4-1 defeat by Japan, the German FA (DFB) announced yesterday.

Flick became the first and only Germany head coach to be sacked since the position was created in 1926.

Sporting director Rudi Voeller, who coached the side to a 2002 World Cup final against Brazil, will take over on an interim basis.

German FA boss Bernd Neuendorf said the sacking was “unavoidable” after the team’s recent run of “disappointing” results.

In a statement, Neuendorf said “with a view towards the European championships in our own country, we need a spirit of optimism and confidence”, saying the decision was one of his “most difficult so far.”

Voeller is reportedly unlikely to lead Germany to Euro 2024.

Out-of-work manager Julian Nagelsmann, who previously replaced Flick as Bayern Munich manager, has been touted as a possible replacement ahead of the tournament.

Former Eintracht Frankfurt boss Oliver Glasner, out of work since May, has also been named as a possible successor.

The Germans were thoroughly outclassed by the Blue Samurai on home soil in the friendly in Wolfsburg, with only some acrobatic ‘keeping from Marc-Andre ter Stegen preventing the score from eclipsing 2001’s 5-1 loss to England in Munich.

Germany have now lost four of their six matches since their early exit from the World Cup in December.

Euro 2024 kicks off in Germany in June 2024.

The home fans booed the German team at half-time, with some chanting “Hansi out” at the end of the match.

Germany have been historically reluctant to make drastic changes to the coaching position, with none of Flick’s predecessors sacked.

Appointed in May 2021 after Joachim Loew’s 15-year tenure ended, Flick was Germany’s 10th head coach since World War II.

Fresh off taking Bayern Munich to seven trophies in just 18 months in charge, Flick was victorious in his first eight matches as Germany boss.

Since then he has won just four of 17 matches and presided over a group stage exit at the Qatar World Cup.

Flick was bullish after Saturday’s latest loss, telling reporters he “was convinced of what we are doing” and “wanted to continue” in the top job.

On Sunday at a training session following the Japan rout, Flick told fans “I’ll keep fighting”, but admitted to AFP subsidiary SID “many things are difficult to predict” in football.

Voeller said after the match emotions were running too high to make an immediate call on Flick’s future.

“I suggest we collect ourselves and sleep on it” Voeller said, explaining “we are all a little in shock… a defeat like that hurts.”

Taking over as interim boss in 2000, Voeller coached Germany to the final of the 2002 World Cup where they lost 2-0 to Brazil.

His first match as caretaker coach is on Tuesday, in a friendly in Dortmund against World Cup runners-up France.
