Relocate to safe ground, Ogun urges residents of flood-prone areas

Ogun State Government has advised residents of areas affected by the recent release of water from Oyan Dam to relocate to higher ground, in line with its earlier warning.

Affected areas include Isheri, Riverview Estate, Oshorun Estate, OPIC Estate, Arepo, Mawere, Akute, Alagbole, Orimerunmu and Magboro.

Environment Commissioner Mr. Ola Oresanya said this in response to flood in the areas, which was a result of the release of excess water by Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority (ORBDA), from the Oyan Dam.

He said the release of excess water from the dam was unavoidable; to avert damage that could lead to unpalatable consequences, assuring residents of the areas that the floodwater would start receding on or before Friday.

Oresanya said the water would recede through waterways, watercourses and canal dredge provided for that purpose earlier by the Governor Dapo Abiodun administration, aimed at ameliorating the problem.

He added that Ogun State Government was working with its Lagos State counterpart and Federal Government towards finding solution to the perennial flood in the areas.
