US court orders Floyd Mayweather to pay Nigeria firm N4.2bn over breach of contract

An appellate court in the United States has upheld the ruling of a lower court ordering a former World Champion Floyd Mayweather Jr., to pay a Nigerian company, Zzini Media Concept Limited N4.2 billion in damages over breach of contract and fraud.

A statement by the company’s media executive, Alex Nwankwo said the appellate court found merit in the ruling of a lower court, which found Mayweather guilty of breach of contract agreement, expressing satisfaction of the organisation over the ruling.

The agreement with Zzini Media Concept Limited requires Mayweather to make different appearances in Africa, including one Nigeria in June 2017.

He however did not fulfill a duly entered agreement but terminated it without cause and refused to reimburse advance payment made by the company for the service.

The CEO Zzini Media Ltd Prince Donatus Okonkwo, had only wanted reimbursement for the company’s deposits but Mayweather and his initial set of legal representatives implied that because the company was not based in the United States, he could not make any refund, the statement noted.

“Feeling violated and robbed, Zzini Media Ltd had no option but to seek and retain legal assistance within the USA to address the breach of contract.

“After several unsuccessful attempts to recover the appearance fees from the American boxer, the company instituted a legal action against Mayweather in 2018 where it alleged breach of contract, unjust enrichment and fraud against the former champion. We are grateful that two courts have granted a prayer by Zzini Media Ltd to impose terminating sanctions against Mayweather”, the statement added.

On October 31, 2023, a lower court ordered Mayweather to pay Zzini $1,638,542 in damages, $721,881.32 in prejudgment interest, $16,270 in sanctioned attorney fees, as well as $285 in costs.

Dissatisfied with the judgement, Mayweather however filed an appeal. On August 27, 2024, the California Court of Appeal upheld the ruling of the lower court.

The judgment was confirmed by court documents dated Aug 27, 2024 and endorsed by Eva McClintock, Clerk of the Court of Appeals of the State of California.

The document is referenced (Second Appellate District, Case No. B334403; County Super. Ct. No. 19VECV00170). Okeke & Associates, PC., by Patrick I. Okeke, Esq., represented the Plaintiff and Appellant (Zzini ), while the Defendant and Respondent (Mayweather) was represented by Eisner LLP, by Jeremiah Reynolds, Esq., and Benjamin Kassis, Esq.

The statement said despite the ruling of the court of appeal and finality on the case, Mayweather had still refused to pay the judgment money which continues to grow at 10% per annum.

In a bid to enforce the judgement, the court has gone ahead to instruct USA attorneys to target Mayweather’s 2015 Bugatti GSV or his 2015 Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta, both valued over the judgment amount, Zzini Media Ltd further stated in its release.

“We have already defeated Mayweather and his attorneys on numerous occasions during the proceedings so the enforcement of the judgement will be duly applied.

“Our forensic investigators have also uncovered a substantial number of Mayweather’s valued assets showing that he was very successful but clearly overstating his true net worth”, the statement added.

Alex Nwankwo quoted Prince Okonkwo as reacting on if his lawyers succeed in securing the Bugatti or Ferrari, he laughed and said, “these are very fast cars, but no good roads to drive them in Nigeria”.

Prince Okonkwo, a business mogul is a former Anambra governorship aspirant and the Honorary Counsel of Democratic Republic of Congo to Nigeria.

He is also the founder and chairman of Tetrazzini Group of companies.

  • McGregor announces shock retirement from mixed martial arts

Irish mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Conor McGregor said on Tuesday he was retiring from the sport, five months after losing to Khabib Nurmagomedov in a controversial title fight.

The fight which was held in Las Vegas had sparked a brawl which led to a six-month ban.

The 30-year-old, who has a record of 21 wins and four defeats, is still suspended by the Nevada State Athletic Commission for his part in the melee.

The incident had broken out after his bout with the Russian last October.

This marks the second time McGregor has announced on Twitter that he has “retired”.

A month after losing to Nate Diaz in March 2016 he said he had decided to “retire young”, but returned to defeat the same opponent later that same year.

“Hey guys, quick announcement. I’ve decided to retire from the sport formally known as `Mixed Martial Art’ today,” McGregor said on his official Twitter account.

“I wish all my old colleagues well going forward in competition. I now join my former partners on this venture, already in retirement.”

The Dublin-born 30-year-old has never been far from controversy throughout his turbulent career.

The brash Irishman was charged in April 2018 with three counts of assault and one count of criminal mischief after police said he attacked a charter bus in New York.

The bus had been carrying Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fighters.

Video footage appeared to show McGregor and his entourage in an underground parking area smashing windows on a bus filled with UFC fighters.

The fighters were at the arena to publicise an upcoming UFC event.

He pleaded guilty to disorderly conduct, a violation which would not result in a criminal record.

In a separate incident earlier this month, McGregor was arrested in Florida after smashing a fan’s phone.

Inside the octagon, there have been few better.

McGregor won UFC’s featherweight title in 2015 by knocking out Brazilian Jose Aldo in 13 seconds, before having two fights against Diaz at welterweight the following year.

He became the first fighter to hold two UFC belts simultaneously when he defeated Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight title in November 2016.

But he was later stripped of the strap after a period of inactivity.

McGregor was outclassed by five-division champion Floyd Mayweather in a much-hyped boxing bout in August 2017 and he returned to the octagon for the now infamous fight with Nurmagomedov last October.

His announcement comes in the wake of reports that UFC boss Dana White had denied McGregor the main event slot at the upcoming event in Las Vegas scheduled for July 7.

  • Mayweather dates model 20 years his junior

FLOYD MAYWEATHER is dating Argentinian Big Brother star Yasmi Mendeguia, who is 20 years his junior, after meeting her in a shopping mall, according to reports.

Boxing legend recently took his private jet to his Las Vegas strip club – but his heart has now been captured by one dancer.

The model first asked for a photo when she bumped into the boxing legend in Los Angeles last month before the 42-year-old replied by asking for her phone number.

Speaking to Mundo Deportivo, the 22-year-old said: “I was in a store with friends. When I saw him I went to ask for a picture, but a bodyguard got in the way. “But Floyd asked to let me pass and we took some pictures. He stayed talking to us about coming to Mexico, partying. It seems very cool and even asked me for contact.”

Mendeguia, who appeared on the Spanish Big Brother back in 2016, is now working as a model, actress and dancer in Mexico.

Mayweather, who turned 42 last month, has not been in action since his December exhibition bout in Japan against kickboxer Tenshin Nasukawa.

The five-weight world champion took just over two minutes to take out featherweight Nasukawa, dropping the boxing novice three times on the way to collecting £7million.

  • Mayweather flaunts luxury on private jet tour

IT is nearly always the intention for those who take retirement to use their spare time to see more of the world, but for most, the cost can be an issue.

Not so for Floyd Mayweather. The 41-year-old, who for now is still a former boxer, took the time last week to embark on a round the world tour on his very own private jet.

On Wednesday the former five-weight world champion took off from Teterboro airport on his journey, which to date, has seen him clock up 7,534 miles and take in four different countries.

The first stop for his plane — a 41st birthday present to himself and the third in his collection —was Iceland, where he visited the Blue Lagoon hot springs.

Rooms in the retreat hotel start from €1,132 and Mayweather appeared to enjoy himself sharing a video and pictures, along with the caption: ‘Life is all about experiencing different things. So, I decided to come check out Iceland.

‘It is one of the most sought-out countries for hot springs. What better place than the Blue Lagoon to experience first while in Iceland.’

After the initial 2,700-mile trip to Scandinavia, the next leg was a mere jaunt, as he touched down in Paris.

The undefeated fighter posed in front of the Eiffel Tower and showed off his lavish hotel room to followers before embarking on the next leg of his tour to Russia.

  • No End to wealth flaunting Exercise for Mayweather

To opine that boxing legend Floyd Mayweather is enjoying the fruit of his labour to the fullest is to put it mildly.

It is a well reported fact that Mayweather has a lot of money and he enjoys making a point of this on a regular basis.

The boxing legend, who is reported by Celebrity Net Worth to be worth around $560million (£418m), cashed in on his last professional fight against MMA star Conor McGregor back in August last year reportedly taking home over £70m.

He has since – as he was before coming out of retirement – been living the high life and has provided yet more evidence that his wealth is almost limitless on his Instagram story.

The 41-year-old posted two videos on his social media account. The first was a boastful display of his material wealth, which showed stacks upon stacks of money sprawled across a bed – with O.T. Genasis’ Everybody Mad track playing in the background.

There is no way of possibly calculating how much was on display, but the only thing that can be confirmed is that it’s a lot, and only a mere fraction of the wealth at Mayweather’s disposal.

The second instalment comes inside luxury retail outlet store, where Mayweather enjoys a private shop.

With a nickname like ‘Money’, it is no surprise that Mayweather takes great pride in his wealth and after a historic career of 50 professional fights without tasting defeat, many would argue he has more than earned his disposable income.

‘See, there’s something you (have) got to realise,’ he says. ‘I shop when nobody else is at the store, except for my crew.’I shop when I want to, special hours. Come with me.’

Mayweather walks into the deserted department store to make his point. He heads into a dressing room where he dumps more cash onto the floor. He snaps his fingers and laughs. Life is good for the now retired boxing legend.

It is not only the money that is worthy of celebration for the Money man, only recently he took to the social media to celebrate his son  who graduated from High school adding ‘I’m so proud of my son for doing something that I didn’t do’ – Floyd …

  • Mayweather to abandon retirement for McGregor

Floyd Mayweather has dropped the biggest hint yet that he will face Conor McGregor once again – but this time it will be in UFC instead of the boxing ring.

The two went head-to-head in a lucrative bout in Las Vegas last August, with the American hanging up his gloves after dismantling the Irishman.

But with talk of a rematch under MMA rules in the Octagon gathering pace, Mayweather admits he is keen to strike a  deal.

Mayweather told SHOWTIME Sports: ‘Retirement has been great but as everybody knows, I go to retirement, I come back. Is it possible I’ll come back? Yes, but if I do, it has to be in the octagon.

‘I spoke with my team, Al Hayman says no, but I spoke with Showtime and CBS. If we can get together with Dana White and the UFC to make a mega-fight happen, one fight, it could be against Conor McGregor, we don’t know.

‘Meaning I know that when we fought we both sold the fight, the world loved what we did. But outside the ring you have to carry yourself like a gentleman.’

A question mark has been placed over McGregor’s own future after he was arrested earlier this month and charged with three counts of assault after crashing the UFC 223 media event in New York.

The incident culminated in McGregor throwing objects at the bus of UFC star Khabib Nurmagomedov, smashing a window and injuring lightweight fighter Michael Chiesa.

And though Mayweather concedes his rival ‘has other things to deal with’, he is keen on meeting again.

‘When I do go to the Octagon I look forward to going to probably around 145 (lbs), if that’s a weight class. But right now I’ve got my promoter hat on.

‘We don’t know (if we’re going to do it). (Do I want to?) Absolutely, Only if the money is right. The money will always be right. You talk to my team about that, we’ll all get on the same page. Of course the numbers are going to be crazy.

Mayweather flaunts $30,000 ping pong table

For Floyd Mayweather who made his fortune and fame in the ring, there appears to be no dull moment even after retirement as he has a finger in every pie. He is not only a money man but has also turned into a busy bee wanting to be involved in sometime at all times.

The former five-weight world champion, who won all 50 of his professional contents, is widely considered the most gifted fighter of his generation.

And since announcing his retirement in the wake of victory over Conor McGregor last year, the 40-year-old has been putting his hands to good use elsewhere.

On Saturday, Mayweather posted a video on Instagram of him enjoying a game of table tennis with his cousin Roy.

‘Money’, who recently flaunted the $100million cheque he received for beating McGregor, was ‘fooling around’ on his ‘$30,000 crystal glass ping pong table’.

The short video showed Mayweather was no slouch with a bat in hand. But he could soon be putting his talents to better use  in the Octagon.

It was reported this week that he and McGregr are reportedly in talks over a sensational MMA rematch potentially worth $500million (£360m).

The pair met in August when McGregor was stopped in the 10th round of their glitzy Las Vegas boxing match, Mayweather’s

    favoured discipline.

‘Money’ has repeatedly hinted he could be ready to make his debut in the Octagon and even posted a video of himself stepping into an MMA cage last month.

Longtime MMA commentator Joe Rogan claimed Mayweather is already in talks with UFC president Dana White over a potential ‘billion dollar’ deal to fight.

Ironically it does appear that once you have hit it big the more money you have the more money is ready to come.

And Mayweather has bragged that he’d received multi-fight deal offers from the UFC and could make a billion dollars if he enters the octagon.

Mayweather officially retired from boxing in 2015 and as of August 2017 he had a net worth of $400 million, according to Celebrity Net Worth. The Octagon show if it comes to reality will no doubt be another dollar rain for the stylish world champ.

  • Floyd prefers Happy New Money’ to Happy New Year!

Floyd prefers Happy New Money’ to Happy New Year!

Floyd Mayweather has revealed he prefers to say ” I am happy getting new money every year, that the traditional greeting of “Happy New Year” used worldwide to usher in a new year.

.As if that were not enough the 50 fights 50 wins man looked away from the camera as if seeing money elsewhere and queried why he should face the camera  if there is no money there.

Mayweather took to social media Wednesday to post an alternative New Year’s message to his followers, insisting his mind will still be focused on money in 2018.

The 40-year-old could be seen looking away from the camera while wearing an outlandish suit and commented that a successful 2018 for him would be adding to his already enormous bank balance.

‘Everyone likes to say “Happy New Year”…I like to say “I’m happy getting new money every year!”,’ Mayweather posted on Instagram. ‘Why should I look in the camera? That’s not where the money is.’

The American is currently enjoying time off after he beat Conor McGregor in one of the biggest sporting spectacles of 2017 and it remains to be seen whether the duo will come face to face again.

Prior to his most recent fight it was estimated Mayweather’s career earnings had reached $700million, with the contest against McGregor seeing him earn upwards of $300m.

Mayweather revealed earlier this week that signing with boxing promotion company Top Rank was the biggest mistake of his career.

He bought himself out of his Top Rank contract in 2006, taking himself out of promoter Bob Arum’s control and going on to become the highest paid fighter of all time.

‘As of today, the worst thing I ever did in my career was sign with Top Rank,’ Mayweather told FightHype.

‘One of my family members was money hungry and went behind my back. That’s the worst thing I ever did.

‘The worst thing I ever did was sign with Top Rank, because I was destined to be big anyway. ‘I was destined to be a superstar anyway.’

China runs: Mayweather adopts a panda for £11,000

Floyd Mayweather’s trip to China hasn’t been filled with the pandemonium he became accustomed to during his time in the ring, but he has certainly taken a leaf out of Mike Tyson’s book.

As well as enjoying a stroll across The Great Wall of China during his visit, ‘Money’ took it upon himself to make one local resident famous, a Giant Panda living in the Research Base of a breeding facility in Chengdu.

While enjoying his all-expenses-paid vacation in China, Mayweather paid a visit to the panda-breeding facility, and clearly did more than just take in the sights, as ‘Money’ made the impulsive decision to adopt the panda.

Of course, Mayweather hasn’t gone full Tyson, who famously owned three white Bengal tigers at one time, by making a purchase and will not be housing it in his £18.9million Beverly Hills castle, but it is certainly a step in that direction.

Luckily for the panda, whose birth name was Mao Dou, his adoption means his name has been changed to ‘TMT Floyd Mayweather’, while the money-man celebrated their new-found bond from a far at the panda-breeding facility.

As a member of staff entered the panda’s enclosure, Mayweather was forced to enjoy the special moment from the on-looking walls as he took Selfies with his new friend, before sealing their friendship with an apple – which he hovered over the animal’s head, hanging from a lengthy piece of bamboo.

However, while he couldn’t take the panda home with him, Mayweather did get to take home a complimentary stuffed toy, which will undoubtedly fit nicely at the foot of his bed inside his Beverly Hills mansion.

Mayweather revealed he was being paid £2million for his ‘luxury’ trip to the Far East – along with 23 of his friends – where the former Welterweight boxer attended a fan meeting, which also posed some interesting questions.

During the meeting, Mayweather flat-out denied claims he was planning yet another comeback to the sport, labelling such reports as ‘fake, all lies!’.

‘I’m happily retired. I’m not fighting no more, no matter what the price is,’ Mayweather confirmed.

Mayweather denies return to boxing story

Floyd Mayweather totally refuted claims he is coming out of retirement as he continues his ‘luxury vacation’ to China, insisting that he has done with boxing for good.

The boxing legend said: ‘I’m happily retired. I’m not fighting any more, no matter what the price is, ‘adding that reports to the contrary are’ Fake All lies.’

Having retired as the wealthiest pugilist of all time with a perfect 50-0 record, Mayweather boasted he is being paid for the current trip to the far east.

The 40-year-old posted a number of photos of himself on the Great Wall, explaining the motivation behind his trip in the caption.

He wrote: ‘Here in Beijing, China at ‘The Great Wall Of China’, considered to be one of the greatest Wonders of The World!

‘It’s always been on my list of places to see throughout my travels in life however, timing is everything.

Coming here with 23 people has been a great experience and it doesn’t hurt to get paid $3,000,000 to simply visit and vacation here in luxury for a few days.

‘With money this long, everything is different. I move different, I dress different and I live different because my money is extremely different!’

Among the obligations on Mayweather’s ‘luxury holiday’, the former five-weight world champion attended a fan meeting.

He took to the stage where he was interviewed before answering fan questions in an auditorium in the nation’s capital.

Mayweather had been reported to be mulling over a return to boxing having hung up his gloves after overcoming Conor McGregor in their lucrative cross-over bout.

But it seems the defensive master is content with his rich and varied retired life after decades exhibiting his craftsmanship in the ring.
