  • Police foil kidnap attempt as suspect denies threatening his victim

The Anti-Kidnapping Squad of Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 33- year- old kidnap suspect, Samuel Ogunleye aka Ilaje boy.

The suspect had allegedly threatened to kill one Dare, if he failed to pay him the sum of N400,000.

According to the officer in charge of anti-kidnapping squad, Mr Akinade Adejobi, a Chief Superintendent of Police(CSP), the suspect was being held for attempted kidnap adding that police would fish out others, while culprits would face the wrath of the law.

Recalling how he made attempt to kidnap his victim before the operation was foiled by police operatives, Ogunleye said: “I am an Ilaje boy because I am from Ilaje area of Ondo State. I attended Stadium High School, Surulere, and later worked as a dockworker in Apapa. When my work at Apapa was not going well, I changed work. I started working as a Lotto agent. I am married with two children and my wife sells Ghana bread. I live with my family at No. 47 Giwa Street, Ijora area of Lagos State.

‘’Let me tell you what really happened that fateful day. My landlord had been disturbing me for money. I live in a room self-contained apartment with kitchen and toilet at Ijora. The landlord wanted me to pay one- year rent which is N60,000, but the only money I had to pay him was N21,000. He refused to accept the money insisting that I must pay him N60,000.

‘’Luckily for me, I heard that one Mr. Oseni, a banker and a big brother to Dare would be celebrating his birthday and that his brother Dare had been helping the needy. I did not know how to contact Dare, so after dining and drinking together in celebration of the birthday, I saw a commercial motorcycle rider (okada man) who used to carry the banker to work. The name of the okada man is Yendu. I told Yendu about my plight and asked him whether there was a way he could help me to pay my house rent as my landlord was disturbing me every now and then. He told me that he was also facing financial problems and he promised to introduce me to one Dare. He explained that Dare had been helping people and he also gave me his phone number.

‘’When I called Dare on phone, he said he did not know me. Later same day he, Dare asked me to send my bank account number. Later, one boy whom I do not know his name called me on phone and said I wanted to collect money from Dare.

‘’I did not mention any amount and if they insisted I mentioned any amount, let them kill me. I only sent a text message to Dare, wherein I told him that my landlord was threatening to eject me from my apartment; I did not want to kidnap Dare. When I discovered that he did not want to help me, I left him alone, I had even forgotten about him until police operatives came to my house and picked my sister.

‘’I did not threatened to kill Dare. Check the text I sent to him. It is clear in the text message that I did not tell him that I will kill him, neither did I tell him that he should give me the sum of N400,000 as ransom. I never said such a thing.

On how he was arrested, he said: “I met them (detectives) on the way as they were taking my sister to a police station. I asked them what happened and my sister said the policemen were looking for me and they picked her because they did not see me. It was on a Monday afternoon. The police then arrested me and took me to their station.

Explaining his ordeal, the victim said: ‘’My name is Dare. I finished at Moshood Abiola Polytechnic, Lagos. The suspect said it was one of my close friends that sent him to me to kill me. He had been calling me on phone for a week. At some points I was not picking his calls until he told me on the telephone that he had been paid to kill me. He said I had helped one of his younger brothers before, and when he showed my picture to him he advised him not to kill me. I later went to the headquarters of the Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) in Ikeja, to report the case. The moment I got to SARS he called me again; he said if I didn’t pay the money, he would kill me. He even raised the ransom from N400,000 to N500,000.

Expatiating further, Dare said: ‘’An operative with SARS called collected the phone and asked the suspect on phone what his brother had done to him. He told him that the former officer in charge of SARS was his friend and that he must pay the money. They told me not to worry that they would track him. He (suspect) then sent his bank account number to me, that I should deposit the money there and called again to find out if I had deposited the money.

‘’When the detectives who were tracking him asked him where they would meet him, he told them to come to Ijora or Surulere and boasted that he would kill those behind me one by one no matter the guns they might possess. I then gave his number to the anti-kidnapping squad and they tracked him.

Dare added: “I am happy now. I used to be afraid when he had not been arrested. At times I will see young men, two or three passing by and looking at me and I would get scared to even come out of my house. Now that he has been arrested, I feel relieved but my fear again is that he is connected with powerful people who may fight for his bail. If he is released my life is not safe. There are more of his kind in our society and Police should arrest them for residents to have their peace.’’

Police foil attack on Ondo youths, arrest three armed men

Men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) of Ondo State Police Command, have arrested three persons who allegedly planned to attack some youths in Abereke community, Ilaje Local Government Area.

The suspects, Seun Mafolabomi, Akintokun Soji and Obebe Layemo, were allegedly caught with dangerous weapons including AK 47 rifles, Barreta guns, and others.

Five others were said to have escaped during the incident.

Sources said the hoodlums sneaked into the community around 9.00 pm, and went straight to the venue of a meeting organised by youths in the community.

During interrogation, the suspects reportedly confessed that they had planned to attack some notable youth leaders in the area.

However, residents in the community were able to overpower them, leading to their arrest by policemen from Igbokoda Division, who subsequently handed them over to SARS.

It was learnt that a large cache of arms were seized from them, while they confessed to receiving N45,000 each to carry out the act.

One of the youth leaders alleged to have been marked for attack, Job Omosunwa, attributed the arrest of the hoodlums to special grace of God.

Spokesman of Ondo Police Command, Mr Femi Joseph, confirmed the incident, adding that the suspects would be charged to court at the end of investigation.

  • Police foil robbery in Abeokuta

The police yesterday foiled a robbery in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

Suspected robbers stormed the town in an unmarked Ford bus and a Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV).

They came in through the Adigbe/Obada-Oko route from the Lagos/Abeokuta expressway and drove towards Okelewo, the commercial hub.

Following a tip off, mobile policemen attached to the Armoured Personnel Carrier (APC) stationed at Ibara went after them and a gun battle ensued.

Commercial motorcyclists joined the police in the chase.

Residents ran to safety to avoid being caught up in the cross fire.

The police shot the tyres of the Ford bus and it halted in Agbeloba. One of its occupants was arrested. The other occupant escaped with those in the SUV.

Police spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi hailed the policemen that carried out the operation.

He attributed their success to the availability of equipment, which were donated by the Governor Ibikunle Amosun administration.

Stressing that the command would make Ogun unsafe for criminals, Adejobi said: “This is just the tip of the iceberg. We got information that the vehicle was moving suspiciously in Abeokuta and mobile policemen attached to the APC at Ibara gave them a hot chase. We got one of the suspected armed robbers, while one of them fled.

“The gun battle ensued in a school environment. Our men were conscious that stray bullets could hit innocent persons. Their target was to demobilise the vehicle and they did so successfully. One of the suspects fled and another one was arrested. He is in police custody.

“We do not have details of the vehicle that escaped, but have informed neighbouring commands to be on the look out. The raid we began recently is not giving criminals a conducive environment to operate. The command will continue to spread its tentacles and deploy all its resources in checkmating crime.”

Adejobi said a team of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), headed by Ahmed Tijani, killed four robbery suspects this week at Odan-Abuja in Igbesa, Ado–Odo/Ota Local Government Area.

He said the suspects were part of the robbers that killed members of a vigilance group at Onihale.

  • Youths foil removal of Ebonyi Council chairman

Youths in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State yesterday foiled the removal of the Chairman, Nicholas Eze, by the council’s legislative council.

The alleged removal plot came barely three months after Eze was sworn in.

It was gathered that some youths saved the chairman’s job by taking away the mace.

Eze, who was the former vice chairman, replaced the chairman, Obasi Nwode, who died in a road accident three months ago.

Nine of the 15 councillors were said to have been invited to a meeting at a hotel in the state capital, Abakaliki, where they were convinced to remove Eze and suspend two of their colleagues, who hail from the same community as the chairman.

A councillor, who pleaded for anonymity, said the councillors were tired of the chairman’s “stinginess and high-handedness”.

He accused Odefa Obasi, who represents the area in the House of Assembly, of masterminding the removal.

The councillor said part of the plot was to unseat Eze so that the Vice Chairman, Njoku Nwelom, from the same Oshiri village with Odefa would take over.

The councillor pleaded with the government and stakeholders to wade into the matter to avoid the escalation of the situation, adding that the plotters may still stage another exercise.

But Odefa denied masterminding the removal. He said he is the political leader of the area and his name could be used anywhere. He said he was not aware of any plot to remove the chairman.

“I don’t know of any removal. How many months does he have to stay as chairman?” he said.

  • Police foil bank robbery in lagos

An attempt to rob the Odogunyan, Ikorodu, Lagos branch of a second generation bank by bandits was foiled by the police yesterday.

The armed robbers allegedly stormed the bank’s branch at 3am in two vehicles, which they parked some few poles away from the premises of the financial house.

It was gathered that the bandits, who were over 10 in number, gained access into the bank’s premises after shooting for close to 30 minutes and also succeeded in breaking the door leading to the three Automated Teller Machines (ATM).

But policemen from the Shagamu Road Division stormed the bank in two Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs) and 20 patrol vehicles. They engaged the armed robbers.

It was gathered that on sighting the police team, which was led by the Divisional Police Officer, Mr Bernard Odiagbonya, a Superintendent of Police (SP), the robbers, who were said to have been armed with sophisticated weapons, opened fire on them.

The policemen, who were more in number, overpowered the bandits, who fled the scene.

“They bowed to the superior fire power of the policemen and fled, abandoning their house-breaking implements,” sources at the command headquarters said.

Two big iron cutters, two giant gas cylinders and a giant size spanner abandoned by the fleeing robbers, as well as several empty shells of cartridges, were recovered in and around the bank’s premises.

Lagos State Police Command’s spokesperson Ngozi Braide, a Deputy Superintendent (DSP), confirmed the incident. She said no arrest was made.
