The Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations in Nigeria (FOMWAN), said it has continue to provide entrepreneurial and vocational skills to women to become self-reliant.

This, the organization, said was to advance the welfare of women, children, less privileged, orphans and widows.

Speaking during the a briefing to herald FOMWAN week, Lagos State Amirah, Alhaja Sherifat Ajagbe, said this year’s theme: ‘Economic empowerment for indigents: A life-changing venture for self-reliance and poverty alleviation’ is centred on self-improvement, cleanliness and giving helping hand.

She said: “Though the world is going through tough times because of economic crisis, the best solution to get through the challenges is by adaptation and the ability to take the right steps. As Muslim women, we should not be in despair or disturbed because it is a global issue affecting everybody directly or indirectly. In addition to our level of spirituality, we should be emotionally stable and mentally prepared to be relevant and meet the needs of time.”

She said the FOMWAN week is for assessment and the beginning of the association’s new calendar year which is widely celebrated throughout the nation by the entire FOMWAN family.

“It is a kind of religious and socio-economic function purposely designed to mark and review the association’s past activities, reflect and assess what we have been able to achieve, correct out shortfalls and work towards improving on them. It is also an occasion to brainstorm and project into the future. The weeklong week will include lectures, visitation to FOMWAN elders and public homes with gifts and cleaning of public places, like mosques and markets,” she said.

Ajabge noted that FOMWAN as a non-governmental and non-profit making religious body encouraged service to humanity.

FOMWAN National Chairperson on Community Development and Humanitarian Services, Alhaja Khairat Sodique, said the association has been equipping individuals, particularly those facing challenges, with tools and resources they need to become financially independent, adding that the FOMWAN week is a unifying programme worth celebrating every year.

“We bring different programmes every year, three years ago we taught our people how to make soap, air freshener, insecticide and others but we are doing something different because the country’s economy is harsh. Everybody is affected including the rich. That is why we say this year we must do things differently to help one another and that is why we decided to bring financial literacy training to teach ourselves how to be financially stable.”

The Federation of Muslim Women’s Associations of Nigeria (FOMWAN) has called on Nigerians to cater for the welfare of their aged and the widows.

Akinpelumi, who was represented by the State Chairman of Welfare and Humanitarian Services, Alhaja Rafat Momoh, urged government at all levels to establish a committee to take charge of the welfare of the widows.

She said the association cannot meet the welfare of the growing number of widows in the state.

Government, she said, should collaborate with relevant organisations, particularly women organisations to assist the widows.

According to her, the challenges widows face as single parent is beyond comprehension.

She admonished other Muslim women on the need to abide by the Islamic tenants to express love to widows who may be lucky if their husband ask them for marriage.

This, she opined, will address the crisis that may come unfold if the situation is not addressed.

The guest speaker, Sheikh Lagbaji advised widows to be hopeful unto God.

He observed the need for them to change their place of living to make it easier for them to get spouse and starting a good life.

The leader of FOMWAN, Mrs Mairo Sani, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos on Monday that it became necessary to enable them discharge their duties effectively.

According to her, it is logical to harmonise the salaries because they all buy from the same market.

“Why will the primary school teachers be paid less when they go to the same markets with the state civil servants,’’ she said.

She urged the state government to ensure that salaries of workers were paid as at when due to alleviate their sufferings.

The association’s leader said “it is sad and it is gradually becoming a norm in Plateau to owe workers salaries’’.

Sani also advised the government to ensure that workers were trained and retrained to enable them compete with their contemporaries globally.

Speaking at the association’s 29th Annual National Conference holding in Osun State, the National President of the association, Alhaja Amina Omoti, said that rather than holding the ‘innocent girls’ hostage, the insurgent group should come into the open to discuss their grievances.

She said: “As mothers, we are appealing to Boko Haram to engage the federal government in negotiation for the release of the abducted school girls, because Islam as a religion forbids making people undergo suffering and shedding of blood.”

The FOMWAN president said the recent silence on the rescue efforts being undertaken by the federal government to release the Chibok girls should not be mistaken for noting that the government was only being careful not to disclose its strategy without endangering the lives of the abducted girls.

While calling on President Goodluck Jonathan to ensure the release of the abducted girls by “all possible means”, she added, “As mothers and grandmothers, we are deeply touched by these innocent girls’ predicament. No one should start thinking that nobody cares anymore.  FOMWAN has always been in the lead for the Chibok girls’ release.

“We have been praying as mothers and know God will listen to our prayers. Mothers can’t seat back when their children are unsafe outside. Let no one think we are comfortable and not doing anything.”
