  • Whole Foods Market to axe 1,500 jobs

Upscale food market operator Whole Foods Market Inc (WFM.O) said it would cut about 1,500 jobs, or about 1.6 percent of its workforce, over the next eight weeks.

The cuts are aimed at reducing costs as the company invests in technology upgrades, Whole Foods said in a filing.

The affected positions were mainly in stores, but “back of house” positions that were not customer facing, the company said in an email to Reuters.

Whole Foods said it would offer employees options including transition pay, severance, or allow them to apply for other jobs.

The job cuts come as the retailer is working to shed its “Whole Paycheck” nickname and its reputation for high prices. Whole Foods said in May that it would launch a new chain of smaller, more value-focused shops next year.

The company, which dominates the natural and organic grocery category, faces increasing competition from specialty and mainstream retailers.

The New York’s Department of Consumer Affairs said in June it was investigating Whole Foods after finding that the company charged too much for some prepackaged foods at nine of its New York City stores.

The company’s shares were down 0.5 percent at $30.96 in low volumes in premarket trading on Monday.

  • Six dangerous foods to avoid

    Six dangerous foods to avoid

Kike Ojo of Hellofood, a leading online food ordering and delivery platform in Africa,  writes on some of the world’s most dangerous foods to avoid.

    Raw meat and uncooked eggs

Raw meat which includes red meat, seafood, and poultry is still quite common worldwide, when the meat isn’t cooked completely it can contain salmonella bacteria. The same goes for uncooked eggs; this can cause gastroenteritis, which is definitely something you wouldn’t dream of having as it can lead to severe problems that are deadly to those who have weaker immune system. So ensure you light a spark under your meat to avoid any dangers.

    Potatoes

The chemical compound Glycoalkaloids is often found in the leaves and stems of potatoes. It can also form inside of the potato if left in the light for too long. If glycoalkaloids is eaten it can lead to bad cramps, bad headaches, or even death. So be wary of potatoes that have a greenish tinge.

    Tapioca

Tapioca is another delicacy that when it is raw can be poisonous to humans. The cassava root enzymes produce cyanide which in actually fact is very toxic. A small amount of cyanide can kill even an animal.

    Tomatoes

Inside the leaves and stems of tomatoes contain alkali poisons which could affect the stomach severely. In addition, it is said that unripe green tomatoes have the same effect.  All the same you would have to
ingest massive amounts for it to be disastrous. It’s not something that you’ll consider as high-risk, but you should still be careful to avoid dodge eating tomato leaves.

    Raw cashews

Surprisingly, you may think the cashews you buy in the store are raw but they are not exactly.  The seeds are essentially steamed to eliminate the dangerous substance urushiol is related to the poison ivy and can cause a nasty reaction on your skin. If you consume in huge amounts, raw cashews can be lethal, so eat wisely.

    Nutmeg

Most people are unaware that nutmeg in theory is a hallucinogenic drug. Eating up to 60 grams can cause a seizure while eating. Whilst taking up to 85 grams can stimulate hallucinations. Those who are bold enough to eat the entire nutmeg should be informed; you can come into a ‘nutmeg psychosis’, which can surely lead to death.

  • NAFDAC seizes N27b fake drugs, foods in five years

NAFDAC seizes N27b fake drugs, foods in five years

The Director-General, National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), Dr. Paul Orhii, has said the agency, in the last five years, seized counterfeit drugs and food  worth N27billion in some parts of the country.

He spoke when he addressed over 250 undergraduates and beneficiaries of the Dr. Paul Orhii Scholarship Award Scheme for Benue Indigenes.

NAFDAC, he said has lifted the bar in the fight against fakers of drugs and food in the country, even when  those in the illicit trade were becoming daring and adventurous.

He said: “The people in this evil trade are worse than armed robbers and don’t deserve to live among sane humans because they lack values and have no values for human lives.

“In spite of their ungodly activities, we have introduced several cutting edge technologies in our onslaught against the trade, and today, we can proudly boast that over 80 million drugs users in Nigeria can authenticate the potency and genuineness of the drugs and food they consume.”

Orhii, who cautioned the students against taking to social vices, urged them to resist the temptation of being influenced by those he described as the masterminds of evil trade in the country, explaining that he initiated the scholarship scheme to aid the students and their parents defray the cost of acquiring university education.

He said: “This award will undoubtedly help offset some of your expenses in school. My plea is that you all endeavor to study hard and be good citizens because it was through same effort that I am where I am today despite coming from one of the poorest families in my community.”

Earlier, the Senate President, National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Comrade Royce Ochai, said Nigerian students were proud to identify with the philanthropy and achievements of Dr. Orhii since he assumed the leadership of NAFDAC and urged other Nigerians to emulate him.

“We urge other Nigerians in positions of authority to emulate Dr. Orhii and his attainments in NADFAC.”

  • CPC tackles unhealthy foods, advertisements

    CPC tackles unhealthy foods, advertisements

As consumer organisations all over the world continue to celebrate World Consumer Rights Day, which came up last Sunday, the federal government has been called upon to come up with statutory regulations to discourage unhealthy foods and their advertisements.

The call was made by the Consumer Protection Council, Lagos, during a symposium in Lagos to mark the consumer day.

The theme for this year’s Consumer Day celebration has been aptly titled ‘Consumer’s Right to Healthy Foods’ as Consumer International, the umbrella body of over 220 consumer federations and organisations, seeks ways to inculcate healthy eating habits into people’s life style.

The international organisation, of which Nigeria is a member, noted that unhealthy diets have been linked to four of the ten biggest causes of death in the world.

According to their reports, “unhealthy diet is linked to obesity, high blood pressure, high glucose and high cholesterol. Obesity alone is estimated to cost the world $2 trillion annually.”

Recent reports from the World Health Organisation (WHO) also stated that while the global obesity figure stood at 1.6 billion in 2005, about 2.3 billion adults are likely to be overweight this year.

Other health implications, experts warned, include arteries destruction when unhealthy fast foods are consumed over a long time. Junk foods also deplete energy. They reduce immunity to fight disease. The additives used in making most fast foods to enhance appearance, taste, flavours and texture are mostly dangerous in the body.

In Nigeria, the Consumer Protection Council of Nigeria kicked off the event on Friday, March 13th, with a presentation on consumers’ right to healthy foods in some selected mosques and Sunday, March 15th made presentations on the same topic in various churches.

For instance, while top officials of the CPC Lagos office were at Saint Leo’s Catholic Church Ikeja and the Foursquare Gospel Church, OPIC Estate, Lagos, the Director General of the council, Dr. Dupe Atoki, spoke on the need for healthy foods at another church in, Abuja.

Thereafter, there was the Walk for Health to create awareness, undertaken by the staff of CPC zonal offices including the head office on Monday, March 16th. This was then followed up by sensitisation talks in various schools like the Lagos Progressive Senior and Junior Secondary Schools, Surulere.

The CPC Lagos office is also poised to visit more schools such as the Community Senior and Junior High Schools, Surulere, Ilupeju Senior Secondary School Oshodi, Ilupeju Junior Secondary School Oshodi, Sunnyside Schools Ilupeju and Penman College Ilupeju.

Speaking with the CPC Lagos Head, Mr. Tam Tamunokonbia, last week after the Walk for Health programme in his office, he said that government should take deliberate steps to support the agencies assigned to protect the consumers to carry effective awareness programmes and come up with statutory regulations to discourage unhealthy foods and their advertisements.

Lamenting the absence of effective regulations, he said that there is no standard labelling or packaging guidelines to determine what most eateries in Nigeria dish out to consumers.

“Nutrition labelling on pre- packaged foods appears to be the trend, Nigeria cannot afford to be otherwise. Such labelling educates the consumers and fulfils his rights to both education and information.”

The CPC Lagos Head also called on the food and beverage industry operatives to regulate their operations by maintaining health standards in their kitchens or factories by reducing their sugar, salt and addictive contents in their foods and drinks.

“They also need to reduce their advertisement appeal, especially to children,” regretting that self regulation has not worked because of profit motive.

However, he observed that self regulation and nutrition labelling cannot work in the absence of effective government statutory regulation. “Where the laws are silent, regulations should be enacted to meet the needs of consumers.”

Emphasising that the CPC, NAFDAC, and SON are already protecting consumers in the food and drink industry, he urged them to collaborate to protect the consumers not only in asserting his rights but in protecting him from the clutches of manufacturers and vendors of unhealthy, unsafe fast and junk foods.

Also speaking at a one-day symposium organised in Lagos by brand journalists to mark the World Consumer Day, Mr. Tamunokonbia noted that unhealthy food intake will ultimately deplete the national work force.

Speaking at the symposium which seeks to unravel the ‘Implications of Unhealthy Food intake to National Development’, he argued that every nation develops with its human resources. “A nation that allows its generation of youths to be hacked down by unhealthy food-related diseases will soon run out of its work force to produce its wealth,” adding that “Health is Wealth”.

Furthermore, he said that the majority of those who survive the ailments will hardly have enough strength to produce for the nation.

The tradition of setting aside March 15th every year to celebrate the consumer can be traced to that date in 1962 when John F. Kennedy, then American President, addressed the parliament on Consumer Bill of Rights.

  • Re: Foods and fruits which are good for virility?

I just read through your piece of April 27, 2013 captioned, ‘What foods and fruits are good for virility?’ I just want to appreciate you for that. I will give it a try. Keep it up. – Clem from PH.

Does boiled ginger serve the same purpose as you explained on foods and fruits which are good for virility?

P.S: Yes, you can boil ginger root to make ginger tea as an herbal remedy for virility. You can also add sugar to ginger tea or cool it and mix it with green tea  or drink it straight as homemade ginger ale.

  • What foods and fruits are good for virility?

You’re a great social and health counselor. Please what class of food and fruits keep a man potent and virile? – Tex Nwaeze.

Dear Tex, there are many kinds of fruits and foods that can help make your wife love you more in the bedroom. I live in Abuja where you can easily get most of these foods from any of the farmers’ markets in town at very affordable prices. Before I list the names of these foods and fruits, it is important to know that living in a crowded city like Lagos coupled with having a hectic lifestyle can reduce libido if you don’t watch it. So apart from giving you the list of these foods and fruits, I will give you tips of lowering stress level to enable you have a wonderful sex life.

Ginger:For me personally, ginger does magic for both men and women and I love the feeling it gives. Like chilies, ginger is a food that can supposedly kick your libido into action. Its spicy properties can, according to research, increase blood flow and help with testosterone production.

Evidence: In Nigeria, Dr. Yinusa Raji of the University of Ibadan fed rats ginger extract for eight days. At the end of the experiment, he found that their testosterone levels had increased. And, to top it off, their testes had gained weight. The study hasn’t been duplicated for verification, but it’s a surprising find nonetheless.

Almonds: Almonds, and nuts in general, are good for your member and your virility. These foods contain arginine, an amino acid that is a key part of the erection process. In fact, arginine has been called nature’s Viagra. I take the supplement daily and I can tell you that arginine is one of the best things nature has ever produced. You not only have an active sex life, you glow too. Just check out my skin!

Evidence: Studies at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center Department of Surgery in Torrance, California, found that arginine increased the frequency and duration of erections in rats. It’s not quite the same thing as testing the amino acid on humans, but it’s worth further study. And eating almonds and other nuts can help lower your cholesterol levels to boot.

Walnuts may provide a real, all-natural alternative to Viagra. The Romans and French have used them as aphrodisiacs for centuries. Like almonds, they contain arginine, but in higher quantities.

Hard evidence: A team of researchers at the University of Malaya in Malaysia recently decided to test the ancient love potion. They squeezed about 3.3 kilograms of walnuts to produce a super-potent extract. The result is a pill that can keep you rock solid for up to four hours. It has been approved in Malaysia and the researchers hope to get broader approval in the future. In the meantime, you might want to chow down on some walnuts. But use them in moderation, as they’re high in calories and could lead to love handles — they’re a fast snack, but not the healthiest.

Chilies: Spicy chilies can also add some zing to your sex life. The “hot” ingredient, capsaicin, increases your heart rate, dilates blood vessels and releases endorphins, which is definitely a plus when you’re feeling passionate.

Hard evidence: A team of Hungarian researchers at the Albert Szent-Gyorgyi Medical University measured vascular dilation and permeability in rats that had a healthy dose of capsaicin. No surprises, hot chilies triggered increased blood flow and dilated blood vessels. Does this mean you should rub chili paste on your lil’ john? No, definitely not. Still, eating chili peppers, or food that contains them, can raise your heart rate, increase blood flow and release endorphins.

Celery: If you smell nice, you’ll have better luck with the ladies. But you’ll need more than Old Spice to really get them going. Celery contains the hormone androsterone, which is released through male perspiration. It’s odorless, but it signals “maleness” and virility as a pheromone and could, therefore, land you a date. Eat a bunch of celery and you’ll be pumping out androsterone in no time.

Evidence: Some romantic scientists at the University of Kentucky tested androsterone’s effects by spraying it on photos of, well, homely guys. They showed the photos to various women before and after the treatment. When their photos were sprayed, those average guys were perceived as more “attractive.” Now, where can we get some of this celery cologne?

Eat up: With enhancers like Viagra storming the market for all you under-performers out there, it’s hard to imagine almonds, walnuts and tomatoes garnering the same results. But, when you think about the health benefits of popping a few oysters as opposed to popping a few pills, the natural way is just so much more uplifting.
