  • Buhari a failure, I didn’t endorse him for second term – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Wednesday denied supporting President Muhammadu Buhari’s expressed interest to run for the 2019 Presidential election in the country as allegedly and erroneously reported in the social media
Obasanjo in a statement by his medi a aide, Mr Kehinde Akinyemi, noted that Buhari is a failure and won’t “endorse failure.”
He blamed the dishing out of the false report on Buhari’s camp and Support group, who he accused of desperately labouring to secure a second term for him through guile and lies.
“It has come to the attention of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo that some elements in the Muhammadu Buhari camp and or support group are desperate to secure a second term, fair or foul. In this desperation, everything is fair, including telling libelous lies against persons and institutions, instead of addressing the fundamental issues of statecraft and economic management.
“In the last 24 hours the internet has been bombarded with deliberate falsehoods aimed at hoodwinking the unsuspecting Nigerians to believe that Obasanjo has now supported Buhari for his second term because of some perceived Buhari’s ‘superlative’ performance in his encounter with Trump during his visit to the White House in Washington D. C.
In another breath, these blackmailers insinuated that Chief Obasanjo met with some Nigeria Labour Congress leaders in his house in Abuja on Workers’ Day. What a pathetic fallacy! Chief Obasanjo never met any Labour man or woman on May 1, 2018 to make any supposed volte face to support Buhari. Furthermore, neither was Chief Obasanjo in Abuja on that date nor does he own a house in Abuja. Any time he visits Abuja, he usually stays in a Guest House or hotel.
“For the record, Obasanjo has not and cannot endorse failure. His position remains as stated in his January 23rd, 2018 statement on the state of the nation. Chief Obasanjo sympathises with the plight of those campaigners and supporters of Buhari.
“He doesn’t believe dishing out fake news that can only be believed by imbeciles will turn black into white. Nigerians know that Chief Obasanjo has only spoken the truth about widening poverty, alienation and social disunity and near disintegration of the country through Buhari’s incompetence. Obasanjo will continue to exercise his right to free speech and no amount of hate speech will assuage Nigerians who are in need of a brand new leadership. The mediocre performance of Buhari cannot be described by anybody as ‘superlative’ even by morons not the least President Obasanjo.
“From the Buhari/Trump meeting, Chief Obasanjo only saw through three points:  One, the US will continue to reduce purchase of crude oil from Nigeria and there is nothing Nigeria under Buhari can do about; two, the US will export agricultural products to Nigeria and Buhari’s government will encourage that; and three – all the killings taking place in Nigeria by herdsmen are being done by expatriates trained by Gadaffi and no Nigerian is to blame and Buhari cannot do anything to stop it.
“For whatever the meeting was worth, President Buhari again bungled another opportunity to self-redeem. No wonder President Trump ordered him in a rather condescending manner to go back home and stop the killings going on in Nigeria! We hope now Buhari will heed Trump’s advice which hopefully will be considered non-abusive.
“Therefore, Chief Obasanjo is more convinced in his statement of January 23rd and will not change his position.  No lies, fake news dished out by these desperate and unintelligent supporters is worth believing and these misinformation cartel and social media tigers will do more damage to the flint reputation of their principal.
Chief Obasanjo understands that the internet has good and bad uses. Those abusing the media should desist from this barbaric act as it will only expose them to greater ridicule at the end of the day.
“Obasanjo will continue to speak out. He will continue to issue patriotic statements under his signature or cause them to be issued on his behalf under the signature of his media representative, Mr. Kehinde Akinyemi,” the statement reads.

Don’t use me to seek media spotlight – Obasanjo’s son tells mother

Mr Olujonwo Obasanjo, one of the sons of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, has advised his mother, Ms. Taiwo Martins, not to use him to seek media attention.
Jonwo, who got married last year, described as  “ridiculous,” claim by his mother, that he was missing and that the Police should look for him.
The mother had in an interview granted a national newspaper disclosed that her son, Olujonwo, was missing from  his matrimonial home and had alerted the Police about it.
But, in his  statement dated February 7 and made available to journalists in Abeokuta, the Ogun State  capital on Thursday, the 34 year-old wondered why the mother would want the Police to go looking for him.

He said he was old enough to manage his life, adding that he was neither missing nor lost.

According to him, he had elected to keep away from his mother for now.
“At my age of over 34 years, it is ridiculous to extreme that my mother would ask the Police to look for me.
“I am well, alive and kicking and the Police need not look for me. For peace in my life, I have decided to keep away from my mother for now. She should not make me part of her seeking media attention.

“My siblings and others in my family who care about me without negative influence and abhorrent action know my whereabouts and we keep interacting and communicating.

“My father, who has supported me and my decisions in every aspect of my life, has been in constant communication with me and he is aware that I am hale and hearty.

“This is my personal and deliberate decision. I don’t want crocodile tears nor undue publicity from anybody,” he stated.

2019: We must put horse first before the cart, says Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, on Wednesday, declared that the  way to go and make the country great again is to put the youth and women forward where they would realise their legitimate interest and power in governance.

Obasanjo said he has unalloyed passion for greater Nigeria but added that he neither has a candidate nor is backing anyone for an elective office in 2019.

The Ebora Owu, who is championing a Third Force – Coalition for Nigeria Movement (CNM),  to galvanize Nigerians  to demand a paradigm shift in the  present system of things,  noted that he would not budge in his earlier resolve  to remain an elder statesman.

He spoke at his Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, when a youth group from Delta State, led a governorship aspirant, Frank Ufuoma Esanubi, to pay him a courtesy visit.

He reiterated that the CNM would remain a socio-political movement, insisting he would cease to be a member of the Coalition if it turns partisan.

The ex – President explained that that transitions that had taken place in the country since independence neglected the people at the grassroots.

According to him, his letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, was not meant to belittle the office of the president or embarrass the occupant, but to articulate his position about the situations in the country and offer sincere advice.

Obasanjo said the press statement was well thought out, and not a product of frivolity.

“In the year 2015, I said I would no longer participate in partisan politics. And I still stand by my decision. Everybody, irrespective of his or her political affiliation is free to come here for advice, I will gladly do that. I have no candidate, whatsoever, for any political office. I just believe that things must be done differently in Nigeria to get different result.

“If you study our transitions since the colonial era, they have all taken place without taking the people of the grassroots into consideration. So, CNM is about the people at the grassroots. It is a socio-economic movement where youth and women, especially, will be given opportunity to appreciate their interests and power. Unlike before, I believe we must put the horse before the cart.

“If the system and the platform sync, I believe Nigeria will get there. And like I said, the moment the Coalition gets involved in candidate sponsoring or participates in partisan politics, I will opt out of it,” Obasanjo said.

Earlier, Esanubi said his group’s visit to Obasanjo was to pay homage to him and intimate him on their resolve to heed his clarion call for Nigerians to come together under the CNM, for a better Nigeria.

PDP, APC supporters, join Obasanjo’s movement in Ondo

A ‘third force’ group floated by former President Olusegun Obasanjo under the Coalition for Nigeria Movement (CNM) held its inaugural meeting Friday in Akure, the Ondo state capital.

Members who were mainly People’s Democratic Party (PDP) supporters with few aggrieved All Progressives Congress (APC) Social Democratic Party (SDP) and Alliance for Democracy (AD) members came from across the 18 local government areas of the state.

Among them were its Coordinator, Hon.Demola Ijabiyi, Protem Secretary, Oluwarotimi Akintoye (Zadok) Former Deputy Speaker, Dare Emiola, Former PDP State Chairmen, Ebenezer Alabi and Biyi Poroye, Dr Dare Bada, Former Mimiko’s aide, Sunday Menukuro, and Kehinde Alabi.

It also included APC chieftains, Jimi Adekanle (JAF) and Mrs Kehinde Adeniran (kk) and others.

Addressing the gatherings, Ijabiyi said the forum was not a political party yet, but a mass movement to determine how Nigerians would be salvaged from the bondage of the discredited politicians in the APC and PDP.

He explained that the platform made up of various groups and tendencies would constitute a new policy order, urging every Nigerian to embrace the Coalition.

According to Ijabiyi “APC and PDP are vessels of darkness, we are bringing people to light, as nobody will like to remain in darkness, there is the need to liberate ourselves  from the bondage of these exploiters, who have no solution to the problems of the country.

The Coordinator who is an ally of Chief Obasanjo said “For now, we are not a political party, but after collating the movement as a formidable mass movement of people in all sectors of life, the decisions of leaders of the Coalition will metamorphose into a political party”.

He noted that already there were several movements coming up that would align with this coalition to achieve the desired goals.

Ijabiyi said the youths would form the largest component of those to lead the movement and determine their leaders at various levels, stressing that there is no way the present precarious situation in the country will be allowed to remain persistent without seeking best alternative.

Re: The Way Out: A Clarion Call For Coalition For Nigeria Movement, By Former President Olusegun Obasanjo

The All Progressives Congress (APC) notes the statement credited to former President Olusegun Obasanjo which has been widely-reported in the media and titled: “The Way out: a clarion call for coalition for Nigeria movement”.

While we do not agree with everything the former president said, especially on his assessment of the government and our party, we note the sundry issues raised by the former president, and we assume these were made in good faith.

As a father of the nation, we understand that the former president would feel obliged to intervene if certain things are not being done or are not being done in a particular way.

However, we believe that such interventions should be for the sole purpose of improving the system and encouraging the relevant institutions to work harder in improving certain situations.

It is for this reason that we disagree with the former president in what appears like a wholesale dismissal of the entire political system in the country.

We acknowledge our challenges as a new political party, even as we believe that APC remains the best option at this time for all Nigerians who are genuinely committed to the progress and development of the country.

We also note that there are about 72 other registered political parties in the country and the people reserve the right to support any of these.

Our democracy itself is young and hence all the parties face sundry challenges, but we have made progress since 1999, with President Obasanjo himself being a major contributor to our progress as a multi-party democracy.

It is for this reason that we believe the respected former president should not give the impression that none of the political parties in the country is good enough for Nigerians and the only solution to the current challenges that we face is a completely new arrangement.

The task of building a political party is not done overnight. Even the oldest of our political parties is still very young in comparison with advanced democracies.

Our democracy therefore stands a better chance of becoming really strong if we allow the parties to find their identities, even if in the process they make mistakes and appear to be “wobbling”.

No political party arrives fully formed. APC call on all our supporters across the country to remain strong and steadfast. These are challenging times.

But we cannot afford to react to public criticism with any form of emotionalism. We are the ruling party. We must take responsibility. Take valuable lessons on board and continue to improve.

Regardless of the current challenges, we are confident that brighter future is assured for our party and our country.

  • I’ve been living with diabetes for over 30 years – Obasanjo

I’ve been living with diabetes for over 30 years – Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Friday morning led hundreds of people on road walk   for diabetes awareness in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, declaring that he still walk with agility at 80, despite being diabetic.

Obasanjo revealed that he was diagnosed of diabetes over 30 years ago but said the condition has not affected his daily functions because of efficient management of it, exercise and strict adherence to prescribed drugs for Diabetes.

The Ebora Owu who made this known to journalists in Abeokuta, shortly after completing a kilometer walk uphill along Abiola Way, recalled that his primary school Headmaster was also diagnosed of diabetes at 50 but managed to live up to 85 years, following proper management of the ailment.

According to him, diabetes does not kill if well managed, but only bares its fangs and kills those who do not give a damn about it.

Obasanjo who was joined in the road walk by the Oluwo of Iwoland, Oba AbdulRasheed  Akanbi from Osun State,  the Ogun State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Babatunde Ipaye, and members of the Diabetes Association of Nigeria (DAN), lamented that many of the nation’s youth rarely exercise to remain fit.

He urged Nigerians, particularly those living with diabetes, to engage in regular exercise, use prescribed drugs faithfully and watch their diet  to avoid being knocked down by diabetic disease.

“Diabetes is not a disease that should kill, I was diagnosed to be diabetic more than 30 years ago but rather, I am growing strong, if you don’t believe I am growing strong and you didn’t witness this walk, come and see me at night, you will know I am growing strong, come and see me in the morning, you will know I am growing, even in the afternoon, you will know I am growing strong.

“What is necessary is a management of diabetes. Some people said some diseases are incurable, but diabetes is manageable and compliant.

“My headmaster in primary school was diagnosed at the age of 50 and died at age 85, you will agree with he tried.

“What to do is that if you’re diabetic don’t be nonchalant about it and don’t eat carelessly. Three things are important, the food you eat, regular exercise and prescribed medication, those are the three most important things.

“You can be diabetic and still lives till 100, I don’t know when I would die but I am above 80 and many of the youth could not catch up with my pace during  the exercise this morning, many of them were running to keep pace me.

“This is my message. Whether you’re diabetic or you have a family or friend with diabetic, diabetes is not a killer disease or it should not be a killer disease unless you are careless,” Obasanjo said.

Also, Oba AbdulRasheed Akanbi he was in Abeokuta to support the ex – President and his foundation in the walk for Diabetes awareness, and urge people to exercise regularly and adopt a healthy lifestyle.

The Chief Executive Officer of Olusegun Obasanjo Foundation (OOF), Dr. Olalekan Makinde, said the Foundation has interest in Health of people particularly giving awareness to  Non – communicable Disease (NCD).

“The focus this year is on women, because of the high level of morbidity and mortality that has been related to them. I want to enjoin Nigerians to join hands with the Foundation to further create a better life for all Nigerians and Africans,” Makinde said.

The about two kilometre walk which began at the Marque within the sprawling Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library(OOPL), Abeokuta, coursed through MKO Abiola Way and had 15 minutes stop – over at the premises Sunny Yinka Oil on same before turning to end it at the take off point.

The road walk was organized by the Southwest zone of the Diabetes Association of Nigeria (DAN) in collaboration with the Olusegun Obasanjo Foundation (OOF) to mark the year edition of the World Diabetes Day(WDD).

In a lecture titled: “Women and Diabetic: Our Right to Healthy Living,” former chairman of DAN, Prof. Sunny Chieneye called for concerted efforts to check the menace of diabetes.

  • Obasanjo blames Shagari govt for nation’s failure in food production

Obasanjo blames Shagari govt for nation’s failure in food production

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, on Thursday said Nigeria would have long achieved self-sufficiency in rice production and consumption if the administration of President Alh. Shehu Shagari had not scuttled local production with his rice importation policy.

Obasanjo recalled  that Nigeria was on the verge of self-sufficiency in rice production in 1979 prior to leaving office as a military Head of States, but said due to inconsistency in policy, the civilian administration led by Shagari, threw the door open for  rice importation.

The Ota farmer who spoke as chief launcher during the unveiling of Okun Rice, at the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) Abeokuta, Ogun State, added that rather set up a committee on local production of rice, Shagari set up on for rice importation.

Okun Rice is produced by Hyst Global Business Limited, owned by Mr. Biodun Onalaja.

He lamented that this shift in policy focus from his agricultural revolution, was the disincentive that dampened the spirit of local farmers and in no time, many of them gave up rice cultivation as bags of imported rice began to arrive.

Obasanjo lauded Onalaja for rekindling the hope of Nigeria in achieving self-sufficiency in rice production and ensuring food security for the nation.

“One of our problems in this country is inconsistency in policy. In 1979, we were getting to a place where we would be self-sufficient in rice production, but then a new administration came and set up a Presidential Committee on rice importation instead of a Presidential Committee on Exportation of rice.

“In no time, when the imported rice started a arriving, those farmers who were cultivating rice gave up.

“Today I commend Hyst Global Business Limited and the chairman, Mr. Biodun Onalaja, for his doggedness, persistence, and stubbornness. It is not easy to succeed here as a farmer. But I want to say Onalaja is a success story, because despite the odds he never gave up,” he said.

According to him, if the nation has just 100 of Onalajas there  would not only be self-reliant in rice production, but also become exporters.

Obasanjo appealed to commercial banks to offer soft loans to farmers at a single digit interest rate, arguing that no farmer could break even on two digits interest rate.

…says Africa needs education to bridge development gap

President Muhammadu Buhari, his Ghanaian counterpart, Nana Akufo-Addo and former President Olusegun Obasanjo Saturday commended the Imo State governor, Rochas Okorocha for his free education programme for African children.

The Imo Governor under the Rochas Foundation College Africa awarded scholarship to five children each from fifty five African countries.

Speaking at the opening ceremony of the College in Owerri, the Imo State capital,  the African leaders agreed that access to quality education is the fastest way to change the fortune of the African continent.

They urged African states to make education accessible to every African child “irrespective of their backgrounds”.

Buhari who was represented by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyema, said that African leaders are pushing for greater African integration, which he said the Imo governor has taken the lead “through his Rochas Foundation College which has given opportunity to quality and free education to children from across Africa”.

He noted that the greatest gift Governor Rochas Okorocha has given to humanity is the charity he has displayed through his Foundation and identifying with the less-privileged in Nigeria and Africa through education.

According to the President, “I salute your vision. What create the world of visionaries are people who are able to dream big and make a change. This is what we see in Governor Okorocha. Your free education across Africa will help to push for a greater African integration. So I expect the products of the Foundation to be agents of Unity and wealth Creation”.

Obasanjo on his part,   lauded governor Okorocha for his contributions to the development of education in Nigeria and the African continent.

He stressed further that the “the extent we take education is the extent we take development”.

The former President disclosed  that he is marveled by the Imo governor’s free education initiative which he said had offered opportunity to the under privileged and poor children to rise above poverty and relegation.

He maintained that “the beginning of development for any country is education”.

The former President, who is also the Chairman of the Board of the College, described Governor Okorocha as “the most resourceful and focused man of his generation”, who has continued to surprise him with his visions.

He charged the graduating students of the Foundation College to be “job creators and not job seekers”.

“I have come to share in the Rochas Okorocha vision on how to build African leaders of tomorrow so that they will grow up with African perspective, orientation and understanding, culture and integration because by the time we have Students in this School for five years, we will be having at least 25 Students from all African Countries. This will be the leaders of tomorrow, they will know themselves across Africa and when you talk about anything about Africa, they will understand and they will be the torch bearers and light of Africa”, he observed.

To the new students, he said “you are very lucky boys and girls. You have a wonderful opportunity here, opportunity of hope away from home, opportunity of mothers and fathers that you might have lost, opportunity of friends you might not have gotten and opportunity of greater future. My advice to you is to take advantage of every opportunity that this School will give you”.

He Continued “As the Chairman of the Board, I have agreed with Rochas that we will have five children from each African country every year and six from Nigeria, one from each of the Six geo-Political zones of Nigeria to balance the Political sensitivity of Nigeria”.

Ghanaian President, Nana Akufo-Addo, in his speech, stated that the access to quality education is the fastest way to change the fortune of the African continent.

He insisted that education is a right that every African child should exercise, adding that “education is the equalizer of opportunities”.

Akufo-Addo, noted that quality education can be made available “if we make the right decisions as African leaders”.

He disclosed that the reason for his close association with Rochas is because he shares in his passion for development through education and his drive for a common vision of making education accessible to every child irrespective of family or place, adding that “Rochas has fulfilled the Scripture as in Matthew 25:40″.

He explained that “education can change the fortunes of Africa. It is the equalizer of opportunities. We must all buy into the vision of a United Africa and the best way is through education”.

The Governor in his brief speech stressed that,   “my dream is to unite and empower Africa through education. The only language we understand in Africa is the language of poverty and this is what bond me and these Children. I strongly believe that out of these poverty situation in Africa, the great leaders of tomorrow will emerge. I just started what I do not know how to complete but God will Continue to direct me”.

To the graduands, he stated “I pray you keep the Candle on when am gone. I tasted poverty and had sworn to fight the scourge with resources available to him. We have taken five Children from each of the African Countries, who are mostly orphans or less-privileged in addition to the over fifteen thousand Children already in the Rochas Foundation Colleges across the nation”.

Also at the event which also marked the 10th Graduation ceremony of the Rocahs Foundation College,  were former Vice President, Dr. Alex Ekwueme, the governors of Oyo State,  Chief Abiola Ajimobi, Kebbi State, Usman Saidi Dankingu, Niger State, Abubakar Sani Bello and Akwa Ibom State, Chief Emmanuel Udom.

Others were the Ambassadors of Liberia, Sierralone, Guinea, Congo, Southern Sudan, Ethiopia and Zambia, as well as traditional rulers from across the country.

  • No hope for Nigeria without agriculture, says Obasanjo

No hope for Nigeria without agriculture, says Obasanjo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Thursday declared that Nigeria may not be able to rise above its socio- economic woes and becomes great until it takes agriculture serious.

Obasanjo said agriculture has the capacity to develop entrepreneurs and create millions of jobs for the increasing Nigerian idle population, lamenting that the oil sector which seemed attractive, could only make few millionaires.

The Ota farmer spoke at the Youth Enterprises Summit organised by the Youth Development Centre, an arm of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The ex – President who described agriculture as his “second career,” said not many countries in the world were able to attain greatness without recourse to agriculture, recalling that his administration opened doors of opportunity which made billionaires in Nigeria today.

“The truth is this, If we are going to have employment for a millions of youth in this country, it will be mainly in Agriculture business not in Oil and Energy. Oil and energy will give you money; will make few billionaires and multi billionaires.

“I opened the opportunity and they took advantage of it, and I thank them for taking advantage of it. All of those who took advantage of it, in oil and gas, banking, manufacturing and all that.

“All the billionaires we have today, they came out as a result of them taking advantage of those opportunities.

“And I am grateful to them that the opportunity that may administration created, they grabbed it and utilised it. One thing is to create opportunity another thing is to find people who will seize the opportunity and make what they have to make out of it.

“But let take agriculture, we will never make it in this country until we take agriculture seriously. There are not many countries that have made it without taking agriculture seriously,” Obasanjo said.

In his address, the Chairman of the occasion and Deputy Chief Coordinator, OOPL, Ayodele Aderinwa painted a scary picture of poverty awaiting Nigeria and other African nations due to the growing youth population.

Reeling out statistics, Ayodele predicted that African youths population may hit 850million by 2050, saying the wealth creation via entrepreneurship is the way to tackle poverty.

He said poverty alongside other problems had been with African from pre-colonial era, but all challenges were fought and won but poverty war stands undefeated.

“Poverty connotes darkness and to fight the darkness. So, there is need to shine the light of wealth creation on poverty’s darkness,” he said.

The Keynote speaker, Tope Shonubi who spoke on “Youth and Entrepreneurship in Nigeria: Which way forward” and submitted that Nigerian youths have enteyrpreneurship skills, but lack discipline.

Shonubi urged youths to be consistent, humble, self-confident and embrace entreneurship with a view to adding values to human lives.
