  • Forum holds talk in Kaduna

The Northern Elders Forum (NEF) and other groups will today begin a two-day PAN-Northern groups’ summit in Kaduna, Kaduna State.

The summit is aimed at discussing challenges bedeviling the country and proffer solutions to address them.

Chairman, organising committee, Prof Ango Abdullahi, who addressed a news conference at the weekend, said several issues on security, socio-economic and political issues makes it imperative for northerners to come together, examine the situation, reassess the northern position and chart a framework of action as a key reference point in future national discourse.

“The summit shall aim at becoming instrumental in mobilising governments, stakeholders and indeed sensitising Nigerians on the state of the nation and its outcome shall provide a viable constructive platform at presenting a common and unified position of the North in any national dialogue.

“The summit shall also seek ways and means to encourage governments by way of providing them with blueprints in respect of nagging questions of national development,” Abdullahi said.

Dignitaries expected at the summit include the convener, Alhaji Yusuf Maitama Sule, governors of Kaduna, Plateau, Sokoto, Borno and Gombe states.

  • Forum seeks improved support for agric

The Food and Agriculture Writers Forum of Nigeria (FAWN) has said the agriculture sector needs a transformation to ensure food security and sustainable livelihood for farmers.

FAWN viewed with deep concern the spiraling prices of food, increasing hunger and malnutrition arising from unfavourable investment climate and weak naira that has affected the agro-allied sector.

In a statement signed by the association’s coordinating Secretary, Mr. Fabian Odum, the body noted that the increasing rate of inflation has also shrunk the purchasing power of the Nigerian consumer considerably. It also observed that young agropreneurs and agricultural Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) are facing challenges accessing funds from the banking channels.

The forum called  on the government to prevail on banks to assist farmers to access credits at low interest rate.

According to the forum, the  plan to reduce wheat importation by 50 per cent in 2017/2018 remains a dream because the fund needed to finance the procurement of about 15,000 metric tons of seed to cover 150,000 hectares estimated at over N2 billion is unavailable. The forum noted: “Effectively, only Kano and Zamfara states made attempts of the 13 wheat-growing states to do the crop at the launch of the CBN Anchor Borrowers scheme, December 2015.”

To further bolster dollar earnings and shore up the naira through agriculture, the forum called for support for growing and export of cashew, mango, sesame, ginger, garlic, flowers among others including processed aquaculture products targeted at ethnic markets in Europe and North America.

  • OPEC, others for oil freeze forum

OPEC, others for oil freeze forum

Members of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) and other oil producing countries are discussing an output-freeze deal next month in Algiers, Algeria as OPEC’s biggest producers are pumping flat-out, the group’s former president said.

While a similar initiative failed in April, an agreement can be reached as Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq and non-member Russia are producing at, or close to, maximum capacity, Chakib Khelil said in a Bloomberg Television interview.

Khelil steered OPEC in 2008, the last time it implemented an output cut, which was announced in Algeria in December of that year. In an interview, former Qatari Energy Minister Abdullah bin Hamad al-Attiyah was convinced there is a need for an accord.

“All the conditions are set for an agreement,” Khelil said from Washington. “Probably this is the time because most of the big countries like Russia, Iran, Iraq and Saudi Arabia are reaching their top production level. They have gained the entire market share they could gain.”

While oil prices have advanced since OPEC announced it would hold informal talks in the Algerian capital next month, analysts from UBS Group AG to Commerzbank AG doubt any freeze deal will be completed, and comments from Saudi Arabia and Nigeria have kept expectations low. Talks collapsed in April as Saudi Arabia insisted Iran would have to limit its production, a condition the country rejected as it ramped up exports previously curbed by sanctions.

As producers are almost pumping at full-tilt, the impact of any accord to prevent further increases would essentially be “psychological,” Khelil said. That would nonetheless have a benefit for the market, according to the Algerian, who was also the country’s energy minister from 1999 to 2010. The global crude oversupply is already diminishing, and markets will probably reach “complete equilibrium” next year, Khelil said.

Qatar’s Al-Attiyah, speaking by phone, said the re-balancing is proceeding slowly and there is a need for global producers to act together and speed up the process. He said it’s “really hard to say” whether anything will be agreed in Algiers.

“OPEC and other producers need to do something because for the market to rebalance on its own that will take a lot of time,” Al-Attiyah said. “Even next year, we have to be cautious and not expect that the market will rebalance quickly.”

Still, both former ministers agreed that a freeze, even if it’s only symbolic, would revive the bullish mood among oil investors and traders.

“The freeze deal will not have a huge impact on fundamentals but it will help improve the market sentiments,” Al-Attiyah said. “At the end, a step taken is better than doing nothing.”

Russia’s output hovers near an all-time high of 10.85 million barrel per day. With Russian output touching new heights, its Energy Minister Alexander Novak said his country was consulting with Saudi Arabia and other producers to jointly cap production “if necessary,” Arabic newspaper Asharq al-Awsat reported.

  • Stakeholders discuss development at forum

    Stakeholders discuss development at forum

The Sole Administrator of Etio-Osa Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Prince Babatunde Ayo’ Ayeni, has said his administration would carry all stakeholders along to enable them to contribute their quota in the development of the council.

He said it is his responsibility as the Sole Administrator to tow the path of Ambode in the dispensation of administration in Eti-Osa East where no one is left behind, adding that the discharge of his duties at the council will not deviate from the directives and policies of Lagos State government.

The council chief said it was in consideration of this principle of inclusive governance that he visited all the primary health care centres (PHCs) in the LCDA few days after he assumed office. He also said he had held meetings with the Community Development Committees (CDCs) and the Peace and Security Committee.

“All these meetings were in a bid to have an unbiased appraisal of the situations on ground. I have also consulted notable community leaders on the modalities of moving Eti-Osa East Local Council Development Area forward,” he said.

Prince Ayeni noted that forum was convened in order to bring together all stakeholders of the council in a bid to fashion out ways of bringing progress to our immediate communities.

“As an administration saddled with the responsibility of bringing succour to the grassroots, it is reasonable for us to allow residents have a direct input in the governance of their immediate environment.

“This forum will be a launch-pad to highlight critical issues and challenges and also collectively proffer solutions to raging problems. As a people, we must all be committed to the state of our environment; we must be ready to co-operate with the administration on having a cleaner and safer environment. Residents must also collaborate with local government officials when they approach them for the payments of rates and taxes.

“Our council can be self-sustaining if residents pay their rates and taxes promptly. When these payments are made, it will be easier for us as government to dispense quality administration to our people.

“We pledge to work assiduously with organisations and institutions and also individuals who are concerned with development of our community,” Ayeni said.

Prince Ayeni solicited the support of the residents to ensure his administration’s success. He urged the Babaloja of Eti-Osa East to ensure that all markets in the area are clean and in good condition.

He also advised him to ensure that traders transact their businesses in their shops; warning that those who display their wares by the road side would be prosecuted, adding that the measure is for their safety and security.

On partnership with PSP as requested by one of the stakeholders, Chief Kolaru, he assured the people of his administration’s readiness to work together with them to ensure a clean and healthy environment for residents.

He further assured that necessary steps would be taken to make sure that drainage systems are free of garbage. This, he said, is to guarantee free flow of water and to avoid erosion.

Prince Ayeni also promised to partner with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to enhance the well-being of the people

Dignitaries such as Baales, political office holders, market men and women, youth leaders, representatives of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) and National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), among others attended the event.

  • Governors’ Forum worried about Abia impasse

The Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) is worried about the political stalemate in Abia State, where two courts of coordinate jurisdiction have issued conflicting judgments on the governorship seat.

Chairman of NGF Zamfara State Governor Abdulaziz Yari, said the governors are working behind the scene to ensure there is no breakdown of law and order in the state.

He spoke yesterday in Sokoto while addressing traditional rulers from Abia State during a condolence visit over the death of renowned politician Umaru Shinkafi.

Yari pleaded that claimants to the governorship seat should respect the courts and avoid acts that will lead to violence.

The royal fathers were led by the Chairman of South East Council of Traditional Rulers and Abia State Traditional Rulers’ Council, HRM Eze Eberechi N. Dick.

“As a forum, we are concerned about what is going on in Abia and we are working to ensure all sides respect the courts, and uphold peace. Abia is known for peace, as such we should not do acts that will disturb the peace of the state,” Yari said.

Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal said Sokoto state has a long-standing relationship with the people of the South East and the visit of the traditional rulers on a condolence had reaffirmed that relationship.

Tambuwal said rather than lay emphasis on things that divide the country, Nigerians should dwell on those things that unite the nation.

“We are all on journey to unity, stability and progress of our dear country.

“The Abia State governor is a very good friend of mine, so I am praying for him to overcome the present challenges he’s facing as a public officer,” he added.

On Shinkafi, Tambuwal described him as a man of wisdom and integrity who enjoys the respect and admiration of all Nigerians.

“No doubt, Shinkafi is the father, and architect of Nigeria’s modern security apparatus. His ideas and handwork gave birth to our present security structure, so he fully deserves all the enconmiums that have come his way since his passage,” the governor added.

Eze Eberechi commended the Sokoto State government for the warm relationship between indigenes and residents of other states, especially those from South East, living in Sokoto.

UI, parents, others to hold forum June 7

The authorities of University of Ibadan has slated a meeting with parents and others for June 7 to seek a joint solution to the perennial problems plaguing the institution.

The institution was closed last month after students protested for the third time over poor supply of water and electricity among others.

A statement by the university’s registrar, Mr. Olujimi Olukoya, said the forum was aimed at discussing ways of finding a lasting solution to the crises in the institution.

The meeting will hold at the Trenchard Hall by 11am.

Olukoya said the meeting is expected to be an interactive session with the parents and others to resolve the issues surrounding  the closure of the school.

The statement reads: “Following the recent developments that led to students being advised to vacate the campus, the management, Senate and Council of the University of Ibadan have at various levels been deliberating on ways to address this problem with a view to finding lasting solution and ensuring resumption as soon as possible.

“Parents and other stakeholders in the UI project are cordially invited to this forum.

“We specially covet your presence and valuable input at this important meeting.

“Kindly note that students are yet to be recalled and as such, should still stay away from the campus.”

  • Ogun: Counting the gains from Investors’ Forum

Four years after holding the first Ogun State Investors’ Forum, about 100 firms with investment in excess of over $200 million, have settled in Ogun State. Presently, China’s investment in the state has hit $2.1billion; its industrial zone ranked as the best in the country, coupled with her ranking as the third best in ease of doing business, are enough carrots to dangle before a discerning investor. MUYIWA LUCAS writes that the third in the investor’s forum series, which held last week in Abeokuta, may further consolidate the state’s desire to be the industrial hub of the country.

For two days, the business community both locally and internationally, converged in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, for the third edition of the  Ogun State Investors’ Forum. The event, which started in 2012, has now become a medium for investors and other business related stakeholders to foster their nest as they seek means of expanding or setting up their businesses. This year’s edition was themed: “Emerging Economic Powerhouse” with three areas of focus: Agriculture, Environment and Transportation

Through this forum, the state has been able to showcase its investment potentials, and also telling potential and existing investors that it has considerably enabled its environment for investment. Besides, it also presents a means of sentising the public that it is ready and open for business.

“We want to showcase to the world the opportunities that abound in Ogun State; we want to come together to look at areas of mutual benefits for us and potential investors”, says Ibikunle Amosu, the state governor.

But how well has the three editions of this forum impacted the fortunes of the state? Amosun revealed that more than at any time in the state’s 40 years history, industries and entrepreneurs from within Africa and around the world are now choosing Ogun State as their preferred investment destination.

Available statistics from the state indicate that between the time the first investors’ forum held in 2012 and last week, the number of new companies operating in the state has hit 90 and may increase to 100 before the end of the year. These are companies that have invested between $100 and $200 million each in the state’s economy; some of these companies are said to have even recorded up to a billion-dollar investment.

Besides, as at last April, the state has attracted a $2.1 billion of investment from China, which was directed mainly towards the development of the planned railways and Free Trade Zones development in the state. Besides, the state’s industrial zone ranked first in 2014; new investment into the state in 2014 was valued at N514. 87 billion which had an increase of N376.57 billion from 2013 while the total investment in the state by the end of 2014 stood at N691.77 billion. The state also emerged first in terms of states that were able to grow their IGR in 2015.

The fallout of the several fora, has also enabled the state to secure the technical cooperation of several of the world’s leading international development agencies. In this regard, Amosun revealed that the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ), has been integral in assisting to streamline the state’s administrative procedures to ensure that reforms that foster business growth were adopted and implemented by the government, understood and utilised by the public. The French Development Agency (AFD), DFID, The World Bank, IFC, AFC, ADB and several other development agencies at different times have also played a vital role in the business environment of the state.

The result of these efforts, perhaps, influenced the ranking of the state by the World Bank in its “Doing Business” assessment – the ease of opening businesses – from 36th position in 2010 to 5th in 2014.

All these may have explained why the state, under Amosun, has coined a cliché for herself as “The emerging industrial hub in Nigeria.”

Yet, more investment is needed to realise the full potential of the State. The State’s Master Plan, which is the statutory policy of government guiding the physical development of the State, captures the many areas where the discerning investor may wish to put his or her money to secure attractive returns.

Amosun said the choice of this year’s theme was apt as it gave consideration to key areas that support investment- infrastructure, environment, agriculture and transportation.  “We have realised that environment affects us, our lives and living and takes centre stage, especially now, with new technology, innovation and climate change”, the governor noted.

    Agriculture

The State’s desire to derive its economy through agriculture, again, proved central to the forum. This is why in the past three editions, the sector has always featured prominently. Ogun State Commissioner for agriculture, Mrs. Ronke Sokefun, while urging investments in this area of the economy, explained that the state is endowed with favourable climate and good vegetation for all year round cultivation of various cash and food crops as well as livestock rearing. For instance, the southern part of the state provides evergreen forest vegetation and soil most suitable for the cultivation of cash and food crops like oil palm, rice, kola- nut, cocoa, cotton, cassava, cocoyam and vegetables. While in the northern part is a vast grazing savannah land that is very ideal for animal husbandry. In addition to this, there are forest reserves, rivers and lagoons. Other natural resources include forest and large quantities of mineral deposits, such as limestone, phosphate, granite stone, gypsum, bauxite, bitumen, feldspar, clay, glass sand, kaolin, quartz, tar sand and gemstones.

Based on this, Sokefun noted that agriculture and agro-industry provide immense investment and business opportunities for international and indigenous investors. “ Our vision for agriculture includes expansion into agro-processing industries along the value chain. Presently only about 20 per cent of farm produce is processed, the rest is either sold as cash crops or left to rot due to insufficient processing capacity,” she said, noting that some of the areas that present the most viable business opportunities for investors are palm oil /palm kernel, rubber, aquaculture, and livestock.

Indeed, with available arable land of 1,204,000 hectares (Ha) representing 74 per cent of the State’s entire land area; cultivated land area of 350,000 ha, which is a paltry 29 per cent of arable land area presently under cultivation, and  a yet to be cultivated area of 854,840 ha , or 71 per cent, Sokefun is convinced that vast opportunity beckons.

She revealed that her state is the first in the country to adopt an Agro-Politan Development Strategy. This is a development paradigm that ensures that millions of people citizens engaged in the agricultural value chain are able to prosper where they are located.

“The Agro-Politan Development Strategy emphasises the localisation of primary production and manufacture. The goal is to enhance the incomes and welfare of the rural areas through the acceleration of integrated regional development. By this, we will embark on rural and urban linkages that encourage development of agric-business network. The objective is a populace-based, competitive, sustainable and decentralised agro-politan region,” she assured.

Nigerite unveils ‘Kalsi Craft’, shines at forum

Nigerite Limited has introduced another product into the market. The product, Kalsi craft, the latest addition to the company’s range of dry construction solution products, was unveiled at the just-concluded Lagos Architects’ Forum.

Nigerite’s product application architect Mr. Jesse Onovre said though Kalsi Craft is a ceiling board, it could be used as a 3D wall partitioning.

“The product is a way to make the market more dynamic in addition to some of the ceiling boards that we already have. It is called Kalsi craft. It can be used in different colours but it doesn’t come painted or pre-textured, you are at liberty to texture or paint it to your taste,” he said, adding that Kalsi products have some advantages over traditional masonry construction.

He further said the product was designed to cater for those that require affordable building construction materials without compromising on quality, especially  because it is affordable; not for the high-end market although it can conveniently fit into that segment.

Some of its products on display at forum included Alurr-shingles, Siniat-plaster board, light gauge steels truss systems, dry wall integrated building solutions.

Others were Crowntile for roof covering; Ultra span steel profile for roof truss, Kalsi parts for external and internal walls, Kalsi Ceil for internal ceiling and Fascia Board.

Onovre noted that investment in dry construction should be encouraged because of it reduces construction timeframe when using the brick and mortar technology.

  • Forum honours illustrious Cross Riverians in Calabar

It was a memorable gathering the Transcorp Hotel in Calabar, the Cross River State capital, last weekend as the Cross River South Progressives Forum (CRISPROF) honored illustrious indigenes of the state who are serving in the present government at the national level in a thanksgiving dinner.

Those honoured were include the Head of Service of the Federation, Mrs Winifred Ekanem Oyo-Ita; the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS), Vice Admiral Ibok-Ette Ibas; Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Pastor Usani Uguru Usani; and National Vice Chairman, South South of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prince Hillard Eta.

Coordinator of CRISPROF, constituted of eminent sons and daughters of the Southern Senatorial District of the state, Mr Eyo-Nsa Ekpo, expressed gratitude to President Muhammadu Buhari for emphasizing excellence as exhibited in appointments he has made from the state.

He called on the president to change the trend of humongous neglect, marginalization and deprivation the state suffers for instance in the seizure of the states 76 oil wells; displaced people of Bakassi; poor condition of Ikom-Calabar and Calabar-Itu highways; and the delay in the activation of Calabar seaports.

Ekpo, a lawyer, said: “We want you to honour Cross River State indigenes, whom the almighty God in his infinite mercy, using the instrumentality of this era of change under President Muhammadu Buhari, has decided to elevate to higher heights in the service of Nigeria.

“The rational behind it is that it not very common in Cross River State. The state has not been this elevated and favoured and I know that it all because of the persona of the person, who is today in charge of the affairs of Nigeria. He recognizes excellence and recognizes record of service and it is no longer business as usual. And he also recognizes that Cross River has been at the forefront of providing dedicated service to the fatherland. We have a rich history in this direction and we thank the President, for bringing Cross River State into the main stream.

“Nigerians are very hardworking people, but the reactionary politicians that have been holding sway since 1999 have not allowed our people to work. The godfather syndrome should be put to rest. People must be made to understand that there is pride in being productive. That is the objective of this group.

“In the era of impunity, excellence was never recognized. The time has come for us to recognize excellence. The godfatherism that existed in the years of the locusts must be killed. Now we must recognize excellence. And these people that were selected to this positions were selected because of merit. And we must recognize them. If we at home don’t recognize them, then who will?”

He urged the honorees to continue to render selfless service to the development of the country.

He also warned against the call for the disintegration of Nigeria by the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

He maintained that the state does not subscribe to or encourage the call for Nigeria’s disintegration.

He said: “The people of Cross River South and indeed the entire state will resist any attempt to use them as cannon fodders for the actualization of any landlocked, land-challenged ethnic nationality’s expansionist pretention or agenda.

“Our forebears resisted it, we shall also resist it to the last person and most importantly, we shall educate and indoctrinate our offsprings to stand against the very idea of balkanization of Nigeria under any guise or subterfuge”.

Responding, the Head of Service who was represented by Mr. Gershom Davies thanked the group and pledged to do everything in her power to instill discipline in civil service while upholding the change mantra of the President.

She said: “ I value this award and honour because I may be honoured all over the world but the one from home is what the world will value most. I demand your prayers and corporation to do my job diligently.”

Also speaking, the CNS who was represented by his wife, Mrs. Theresa Ibas, said: “It is great to my family and the Nigerian Navy. I pledge to continue to be a good ambassador of the state and Nigeria at large”.

The south-south national vice-president of the APC Prince Eta commended the President and his party for what the “unequal love because considering our support for him, we won’t be where we are today in his administration”.

A keynote address titled Leadership Issues Related to Managerial Failures in our Political/Cultural Space, delivered by Prof Eyo Etim Nyong charged the Buhari government to be cautious in decisions it makes for the country.

In Cross River, Nyong urged those in leadership position to focus more on how to lift the state out of its presently very low status in the country, which he said was characterised by low presence of Cross River employees in federal establishments, absence of significant Federal projects in the state, including the challenge of bringing the Calabar Seaport to realisation in order to drive the economy of the state and create employment for youths.

He advised the current leadership to dwell more in driving the state’s agricultural, ecotourism, hospitality, and cultural heritage sector rather than throwing all its weight on just one annual carnival.

Chairman of the thanksgiving dinner, Senator Prince Bassey Edet Otu lauded President Muhammadu Buhari for honouring Cross River with appointments.

Otu said Buhari’s benevolence to the state sent a strong message that meant that the APC was out to win Cross River.

Among several dignitaries who graced the event are former Senate Leader, Victor Ndoma Egba, former governor of the state, Mr. Clement Ebri.

  • The Nation Forum on the economy opens April 7

The Nation Forum on the economy opens April 7

To devalue the Naira or not? How do the states get out of the woods? What new avenues for investments? How do we bring life to the factories now turning into carcasses?

Answers to these and a major boost to states of the federation through a focus on inter and intra-regional competencies, comparative advantages and trade relationships will be put in motion as the re-scheduled The Nation’s “ First National Forum On The Economy” holds on April 7th and 8th, 2016, in Lagos.

The event, which was initially slated for December, last year, was shifted because of the bad weather which affected flight schedules and principally to also accommodate broader stakeholders of the economy, including newly appointed ministers.

A concept of Vintage Press Ltd, publishers of THE NATION, in partnership with CEEDEE Resources, the national forum will be hosted by the Lagos State Government. Major partners across the country, including the Bank of Industry and Lagos Airport Hotel Ltd, Ikeja, which is putting up its facilities as the venue, and several others have signified interest in the event that is expected to attract the participation of all the state governments, the private sector and the public.

The programme also received the blessing of the Federal Government. The Vice President and Chairman of the National Economic Council, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, accepted to be part of the events and deliver the keynote address at the opening ceremony. A delegation led by the Chairman, Editorial Board of The Nation, Mr. Sam Omatseye, held a meeting with the Vice President early last month in his Aso Villa office, during which he expressed the government’s happiness at such a positive response effort by The Nation to complement government’s initiatives to reposition the economy.

Mr. Omatseye, at the meeting, briefed the Vice President that the major focus of The Nation’s First National Forum On The Economy is national growth through inter- regional cooperation, stressing the interest of the organisers to stimulate internal revenue growth through inter and intra trades and also through the promotion of recognised, hidden and untapped competencies, including  solid minerals, which will ultimately lead to the boosting of international trade and foreign exchange earnings.

The major objective of the forum is to push a new momentum for awareness among the states and geo-political zones of the country, for a genuine assessment of peculiar competencies, capacities and comparative advantages. This is conceptualised to achieve the Forum’s two-way focus of the programme’s agenda of dynamic discourse and general exhibitions among participants.
