  • Foundation empowers Ogun youths

A foundation, Children Academic and Vocational Support Initiative (CAVSI), has empowered youths of

Iloye community in Sango Ota, Ogun State, with educational support, seminar and career counselling.

Tagged: Annual CAVSI career counselling seminar/training, the foundation’s three-day rural community children academic and vocational support initiative featured tutorials and quizzes.

The project, which started in 2004 to stimulate learning, holds in three parts of the country yearly.

“Now, we have three major events for children every year with the three days.  The career counseling seminar is designed to guide the children in the choice of career and also prepare them for life in and after school. It’s our desire to engage the children in a practical way of learning while having fun. We are happy that we were able to invite Access Bank to educate the children on early savers account with the theme Focused Savings.

‘’At the end, we pay for JAMB exams of the winner in senior secondary category. Other participants get consolation prizes of educational materials. We get professional friends and family to interact with the children,” said CAVSI founder, Mr Hakeem Ariori.

He said the rural initiative was a family project but grew to an initiative that empowers children and youths with academic and vocational training.

This year’s edition was divided into the seminar part and the tutorials.

Ten teacher-volunteers, which comprised the founder’s wife, mother, children and people in the community, taught the pupils on diverse subjects, including Mathematics, English language, general studies and current affairs, while the seminar featured guest speakers, such as Segun Adebowale, who is visually-impaired and teaches in the school for children with special needs and a security consultant, Mr Bode Dogbonjaye.

At the end of the programme, participants and winners went home with prizes, exercise books, educational puzzles, schools bags and white socks.

Twenty-four pupils benefited from the programme, which included pupils in primary, junior and senior secondary schools. They were urged to set academic goals early in each subject to make good grades. They were advised to be conscious of their environment, with special attention to security.

“I have always loved doing things with children at their level, such as singing, dancing, joking and playing games. I use such activities as an avenue to teaching them new skills and things. I realised as soon as we move to Iloye in Sango Ota in Ogun State that I must continue with my passion. Easter 2004 was our first main educational outreach in which we had about 20 children in attendance. At that time my immediate family and I donated different items, such as sweet, biscuits, balloons. We also got fairly used clothings, toys, books, footwear’s from Chief (Mrs) A.T.Oni-Okpaku of Ebunoluwa Foundation. We also had games, such as plate-on-the-head race, egg and spoon race.

“Over the years, it has grown to include street football which has always been used to teaching about goal setting, team spirit and problem-solving. Spelling competition was introduced and then treasure hunt, reading competition, tyre race, Disney word search game, career and different seminars. Most of the activities are practical to make it attractive to socialise and learn in a funny way,” he said.

The programme was sponsored by Ariori’s family members, friends, Mrs Oni-Okpaku, Eruobodo House, and neighbours, among others.

  • Foundation empowers 230

No fewer than 230 fatherless children and orphans were empowered in five vocational skills by the Rose of Sharon Foundation in its second edition of youth empowerment programmes.

Held at the Multipurpose Hall, Yaba College Technology, Lagos, the training, which lasted about two hours, included wig making, fancy slippers making for both males and females, shea butter processing for export, perfume making and processed black soap making for skin improvement.

This was a follow up to the previous editions that focused on employability skills, basic components of Curriculum Vitae writing and how to chase job. This year’s edition was aimed at empowering the youth on vocational skills, which would serve as an alternative to white collar job.

The empowerment is one of the foundation’s efforts towards promoting the welfare of widows and orphans, especially to prepare the youth for entrepreneurship.

According to founder, Rose of Sharon Foundation and business tycoon, Mrs Folorunsho Alakija, entrepreneurship is good for the continent to enable it develop.

She noted that the rest of the world had been saturated with  entrepreneurial skills because they have been able to provide what the people need to live while African countries have barely changed their challenges to opportunities due to the inability to face challenges. This, she said, is why most of African countries are still waiting for development.

Mrs Alakija added that Africa is blessed with resources, such as manpower, weather and the population, adding thatthese are good for industrial growth.

She stressed that Africans need to key into opportunities and turn them around to make big changes for individual development and give back to the society.

According to her, millions of graduates are not employed due to their failure to identify opportunities and that tapping into opportunities like the empowerment programme will go a long way in developing the country. “Everything needed for the production is available locally. It’s embellishment and packagingthat are the only things require for theirproduction,” she said.

Mrs Alakija, however, admonished the youth to imbibe the principles of determination, perseverance, being focused and have the ideology of being successful.

“You are advised to be on the look out and see what competition about what you are doing is available so that you will be able to see the area you need to improve and you can begin to take yourself through to the next level. I am not going to tell you that it is easy. By all means, nothing comes easy but don’t run away at the first bus stop of a challenge you come across; forge on and look at the light at the end of the tunnel because that is where you are going and don’t turn back until you get there.

“If you don’t want to remain where you are, you need to put all the ingredients you need in place to be able to get to that location so that you will be able to say at the end of it that I have succeeded and I will continue to take myself to as many levels I can.”

Mrs Alakija noted that the foundation will not stop at empowering the youth alone but will take it as a responsibility to organise a forum to enlighten the participants on how to manage the business and other things to accompany the skill acquisition.

All the products made during the programmes will be exhibited during the 10th anniversary of the foundation in June when more empowerment items will be given.

Speaking on Own your future, be your own boss: the alternative job founder Sheroes Global Mrs Yemi Adenuga charged the youth not to let their circumstances stop them from doing what they want to do.

According to her, Africa is one of the best places to be an entrepreneur and one of the best ways to do that is the desire to solve problems and not let money be the only drive, add-ing that the problem facing the country is the quest to make money without solving a problem.

She noted that as an entrepreneur, there must be a problem in the society, and that solving it would be the major drive to success. She advised against  relying on one source of income.

“You should be proud of what you do,whatever you think as an idea you need to start now. Because as you are thinking about that idea, someone somewhere is also thinking about it.Use it to your betterment because if you decide today, no one will stop you. Ask questions around, use whatever you have positively. If it is an idea, throw it out and work towards it. Let people suggest different things to you and you pick best of it because the business you are going to do is for the people, therefore you should find out what people need,” she added.

Project Director National Youth Summit Nigeria Ambassador Utchay Odims, who spoke on youth entrepreneurship as solution to unemployment, stated that waiting for white collar jobs will impoverished the country while entrepreneurship is the best solution to its problem.

He, however, admonished the youth to follow their passion as the master of their life and make their life a valuable asset and not be discouraged achieving their purpose. He also added that self-determination is the key to attain success in life and avoid pride and greed to rule their life.

Dignitaries who attended the occasion included Flourished Africa founder, Mrs Kehide Okoroafor,  Yomi Otunbela Foundation founder, Otunba Yemi Otunbela, Toyin Alausa Foundation founder, Mrs Oluwatoyin Alausa, and So Rich International Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr Yemi Eniola.

  • Foundation sensitises residents on PVC collection

A non-profit group, the Adekunle Osibogun Foundation (AOF), has begun sensitising residents of Ogun State on the need to register and collect their Permanent Voters Card (PVC).

This, it said, is to eliminate political apathy and instead encourage citizens to participate in the 2019 elections.

A statement by its founder, Adekunle Osibogun, said the campaign is to engage the citizens on the need to be more active in the electoral processes.

The statement said a review of the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) statistics of PVCs’ collected in Ogun State before the March 28, 2015 election, and the recent statistics, showed that there was still a large number of uncollected PVCs, while the number of newly-registered voters was not a true reflection of the state’s voting population.

According to Osibogun, investigation conducted by his foundation showed that despite improved efforts by INEC to ensure more voters are registered before the 2019, there was a need to improve the reproduction rate of lost PVCs and also simplify the process of transferring PVCs.

He added that the self-imposed political apathy embraced by youths will not solve national challenges or improve governance in the state; it will rather continue to stunt the state’s development.

Osibogun urged Nigerians to join the campaign for PVC collection, and support INEC’s initiatives towards successful elections in 2019.

  • Governors, Dangote, foundation partner on polio eradication

Six governors in the north met in Sokoto State on Wednesday to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Dangote Foundation and USAID to extend the routine polio immunization programme.

Nasiru El-Rufa’i (Kaduna), Abdullahi Ganduje (Kano), Kashim Shettima (Borno), Muhammed Abubakar (Bauchi), Aminu Tambuwal (Sokoto) and representative of Governor Ibrahim Gaidam of Yobe State were present at the signing.

Tambuwal described Bill Gates as a demonstration of a true philanthropist, who not only touched lives, but went beyond his race and country for humanity.

He described Aliko Dangote as an unequal interventionist in economic development, health and other humanitarian activities in Nigeria and Africa.

Tambuwal also hailed the Federal Government for supporting the programme and promised that Sokoto State would ensure quality and standard healthcare service delivery to the people.

El-Rufa’i noted that the north had been on the news for the wrong reasons, especially for health-related matters. He stressed that the region is committed to changing the narratives.

“We hope that in the next one year, we will return to inaugurate these projects, though we have been assured that the shopping mall would be ready in June,” he said.

  • UBA Foundation commissions project

    UBA Foundation commissions project

UBA Foundation, the Corporate Social Responsibility Arm of United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc, has completed the construction of a pedestrian bridge primarily for students of the Usman Danfodiyo University, Sokoto State, thus bringing comfort to students of the institution.

The construction of the bridge, valued at about N13 million was commissioned by the Governor of Sokoto State, Aminu Tambuwal.

For over four decades, the students of UDUS, especially those living off-campus had found it tedious to connect the campus as the area was impassable, especially during rainy season. They couldn’t get in and out of their dormitories and to the mosque easily and were going through an uncomfortably long route to get to lectures.

In August 2017, at the  National Dialogue Series organised by the Students’ Union Government (SUG) of the school , the Chairman of UBA Plc, Tony Elumelu acceded to the request of the students who had informed him of their plight and promised to assist them.  UBA Foundation came to their aid.

At the opening ceremony of the newly constructed bridge, the UBA Group Managing Director, Kennedy Uzoka expressed delight at the prompt completion of the project and reminded the students that UBA  remained committed to easing the day-to-day challenges of  the citizens, and especially students living within and beyond its areas of operations.

He said: “As an institution, we are passionate about giving back to society through UBA’s Foundations’ components: Empowerment, Education and Environment.

“Today’s event is very symbolic. We believe in the society we operate in and this gesture is part of efforts of the UBA Foundation to give back to the society.

“I strongly believe that with this bridge, students can move freely and will not have to go a long distance to reach their hostels.

‘’So, this saves time and will enable them to study harder,” he said.

He said the Foundation gave priority to education through scholarship to Nigerian students; improve environment and empowered many people with a view to impacting on the society.

According to Uzoka, UBA is creating a new narrative for Africa capable of making Africans run organisations that can stand the test of time for over 100 years.

In his remarks, Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State, who spoke through the Secretary to the State Government, Prof. Bashir Garba lauded the UBA Foundation for the gesture.

He called on other banks operating in the state to emulate the footstep of the bank by giving back to the society.

“We need more of these interventions to public universities in order to improve teaching and learning.

‘’I really commend Tony Elumelu and the Group Managing Director for coming to the aid of the students,” the governor said

Tambuwal, therefore, renamed the bridge ‘Tony Elumelu UBA Pedestrian Bridge’.
