  • Foundation takes over sponsorship of Chibok girls in US

Foundation takes over sponsorship of Chibok girls in US

Five of the 10 Chibok girls currently in the United States of America (USA) are to have their education bankrolled by the Murtala Muhammed Foundation.

All the 10 were initially taken to the USA by some Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) ostensibly to give them scholarship.

The arrangement failed to work prompting the federal government to seek the assistance of the foundation, Women Affairs Minister  Hajiya Aisha Alhassan said yesterday in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital.

Hajiya Aisha who met with some parents of the over 200 Chibok girls who were abducted in April 2014 by Boko Haram said: “what happened was that the girls escaped from Boko Haram captivity and returned home to Chibok.

“But some NGOs and religious organisations approached the parents with offers to take them away from the area due to the trauma.”

Government was not consulted  and  the parents accepted to release the girls ,she said.

Soon after the girls had arrived the USA,their  parents petitioned the Federal Government that they had negative reports on the girls.

She said:”The parents sent information to government that they heard that the girls were not in school in the U.S. and that government should intervene in the matter.

”We investigated the matter through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Nigerian Embassy in the U.S. and found it to be true.

“Our investigations corroborated the parents claim that the girls were not taken to school, rather, they were being used by the NGOs to make money.

“But government does not take responsibility over someone else mistake.”

She said President Muhammadu Buhari on hearing of the development mandated her to meet with the parents over the issue.

“So, I have come here to meet with the parents and we have discussed, I have told them the options available.

“What we can do is to talk to some donor agencies that we are working with so that they can take up the sponsorship of the girls.

“Consequently, I am happy to say that the Murtala Muhammad Foundation has taken over the sponsorship of five out of the 10 girls.

“They have found schools for them and they are doing well.”

She said the remaining five girls are still in the custody of two individuals in the U.S.

Two of them are with a white American and three with a Nigerian simply named Emmanuel.

The Minister said the Murtala Muhammad Foundation has signified interest in taking the two girls from the white man, adding: “we spoke with Aisha Muhammad, the Chairperson of the Foundation and she agreed to take over the sponsorship of the two girls with the white man.

”But she declined to extend the scholarship to three of the girls with Emmanuel.”

She said it was discovered that there were other five Chibok girls in the U.S. also studying apart from the 10.

“Today during our discussions, we realised that there was a first group of five girls taken to the U.S. “But the parents said that they were in touch with them and the girls are in good hands,” Alhassan said.

  • Foundation lifts Oshodi with free health service

A United Kingdom-based Non-governmental Organisation Oluwoye Ben Eweoya Foundation (OBE) has provided a free health service for the people of Oshodi.

It was in partnership with Labours of Love Foundation, a United State-based NGO.

The event was held at Ajibulu Health Centre, Mafoluku, Oshodi.

OBE founder Ben Eweoya said the programme was borne out of zeal to render humanitarian service to his community, adding that he needed to give back to Oshodi community.

He said: “I am filled with joy today to be part of development and attainment of good health within my community. Good health begins from cleanliness awareness, lifestyle choices and many more.

“OBE is a product of Oshodi, I was born and bred here. Oshodi gave me the opportunity to free education from St Paul’s Primary School to Mafoluku Grammar School before I left for the university. Therefore, I need to give back to my community.

“I want to ensure developmental projects like this are carried out frequently. I will ensure it doesn’t stop in the healthcare, we will also provide water and study materials for pupils in Oshodi.

“Before now, I have been able to provide books for pupils and also organised reading competition among schools in Oshodi for the past two years. We still have a lot to do because the ones we have done is not enough, I will encourage others to also contribute their quota to the development in Oshodi. “We were able to reach all the seven wards in Oshodi to create awareness for this service and we have recorded up to 300 people who have registered. I am really impressed with the turn out.”

The Sole Administrator of the Oshodi Local Government Area, Taoreed Adebayo hailed the foundation, saying: “OBE has done a lot for this community. That is why we didn’t hesitate to work with him by providing this platform to execute this free health project. We all know our health is important and health is wealth. Therefore, the free services will help us know our status and how we can take preventive measures.”

The Chief Executive Officer of Labours of Love Foundation, Dr Olujoke Jones, told The Nation that the NGO decided to partner with others to ensure communal development.

Dr Jones, who came from the U.S. for the event said: “In order to avoid spending a lot of money when one gets sick, the best one can do by staying healthy is to take precautions and that is what OBE has done. We are doing the medical check-up and given out drugs for free.”

  • 129 benefit from foundation’s empowerment scheme

The lawmaker representing Epe Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Wale Raji, has said the zeal to render service to humanity attracted him to politics. The lawmaker, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), added that after a fulfilled career in the civil service, the issue of how to make his fellow humankind better became his preoccupation.

Hon. Raji revealed this at Epe, a Lagos suburb during the maiden graduation ceremony of his youth empowerment scheme. The event served as a platform for the presentation of empowerment equipment and tools to the first batch of 129 graduates of the foundation.

The lawmaker further explained that his Youth Empowering Scheme, in partnership with the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Education Board (LASTVEB) had trained about 129 youths in various skill acquisition and empowerment programmes that will make them be self-reliant. He also said the beneficiaries cut across his constituency.

In his welcome address, Raji noted that the foundation was conceived in order to make a sustained impact through quality service delivery to the people of his constituency. He added that the youth in the area have been neglected for too long which has given room for many of them to take to hooliganism and other anti-social vices.

He explained that the Youth Empowerment Scheme was essentially a youth-focused skill acquisition and empowerment initiative which is implemented in collaboration with the Lagos State Technical and Vocational Board (LASTVEB)

He said: “Nobody can make you rich but an opportunity can be created for you to acquire a vocational skill that will always put food on your table and make you financially independent.

“Everybody gathered here today look forward to the success of your new vocation. You cannot afford to disappoint them by betraying the confidence reposted in your abilities, competencies and skill to succeed and make something out of your life,” he said.

In his message to the graduates, Governor Akinwumi Ambode, who was represented by the Commissioner for Wealth Creation, Mr. Babatunde Durotimi-Eti said the Raji initiative couldn’t have come at a better time than now. He also noted that the initiative was in line with the state’s empowerment programme which aims at taking the youth away from the street and assist them to be wealth creators.

He challenged the participants to be focused and look beyond the immediate so as to be part of the revolution going on in the state in terms of wealth creation among the youth, adding that the future of the nation is in their hands.

In his comment, the Chairman of the occasion, Justice Adesola Oguntade said there was no other way to give back to the society than empowerment of the youth in order to make them self-reliant as Hon. Raji was doing. He noted that the gesture would go a long way in discouraging them from taking to crime.

Oguntade, who was represented by Mr. Ayodele Aina regretted that, over the years, the youth which constitute leaders of tomorrow were short-changed in the scheme of things; thereby exposed them to uncertainty and bleak future.

He said the giant step taken by Hon. Raji Foundation by empowering the youth from his constituency, there is a ray of hope for those who can grab the opportunity offered them and launch themselves into economic independence.

“What we are doing today is to bridge the gap that has existed for so long. It is very sad to read from the dailies every day about the huge number of youths who are in various prisons all over the world. These are the youth who were supposed to be engaged in productive enterprise that will give them economic survival like we are doing today,” he said.

Speaking in the same manner, a community leader, Mr. T. J. Abass, noted that the initiative which was the first in the community was monumental; adding that it is a recipe for economic survival for the youth who thought that all hopes were lost.

Abass challenged the participants to make use of the opportunity. “The race of your life has just begun through the benevolence of Hon. Raji. Try and make success of what you were given today. Opportunity comes but once in a life time,” he said.

Speaking to Southwest Report about the empowerment programme, one of the beneficiaries Suleiman Natiq, who graduated as aluminium expert, said the three month-intensive training he received is a life time fortune.

  • Foundation converts Adelabu’s house to monument

    •To be unveiled Sept 3

THE personal house built by the late colourful Ibadan politician, Sir Adegoke Adelabu, has been converted to a monument, named “African Centre of Intellectualism”.

The one-storey building standing on a plot of land in Oke Oluokun area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, will be renamed on September 3, to mark the late politician’s posthumous 101 years birthday.

The Chairman of the Adegoke Adelabu Foundation, Oloye Lekan Alabi, said this while addressing reporters in Ibadan yesterday.

According to him, the house, originally named ‘Taj Mahal’ by the late politician, was being remodelled to serve as a monument for tourists, researchers and other users for enrichment of knowledge and preservation of Adelabu’s ideals.

The house is also serving as the headquarters of the Adelabu dynasty.

The foundation was established last year during the posthumous centenary birthday celebration of the late politician.

Reminiscing on the late political icon, the Secretary of the foundation, Mr. Yinka Adelabu, analysed his book entitled: “Africa in Evolution”, which, he said, was Adelabu’s complete political thoughts.

The book, which has two parts, contained the late politician’s thoughts on how Nigeria can gain independence, educational development, economic planning, agriculture as well as unity among the ethnic groups, among others.

According to him, Adelabu’s ideas are still practical solutions to the problems Nigeria is facing today.

Alabi said the house would be a potential world tourists’ site, where visitors can learn about the great ideas and ideals of the late politician.

Born on September 3, 1915, Adelabu gained double promotion for his extra-ordinary brilliance at the Government College, Ibadan.

He became the first indigenous manager at the United African Company (UAC) at the age of 21 years and occupied strategic positions in politics with important achievements.

He died at the age of 43 years.

  • Foundation hails Buhari on Army/Shiite clash

The Global Excellence Foundation has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for giving the assurance that he would give appropriate response to the report of the Kaduna State Judicial Commission of Inquiry that investigated the Army/Shiites clashes of December 2016. The foundation said in a statement by its Country Director, Prof. Yemi Ola, in Abuja on Tuesday that President Buhari’s comments would bring the controversy generated by the clashes to an end. Presidential Spokesman, Garba Shehu, had said Buhari was studying details of the report before announcing appropriate response in due course.
Ola urged the president to give a dispassionate response to the report in order to prevent the rise of another terror group like the IMN so that the military or any security agency for that matter have no need to quell the kind of insurgency that the Shiite sect had cooked up. The statement reads: “We must also not lose sight of the genesis of it all. IMN is a group that went off hinge and was on the verge of unleashing extremism on the populace with the youths it has brainwashed, indoctrinated, radicalised and militarised to confront state institutions. Here was a group whose reign of terror spanned a few decades in Zaria, Kaduna state where it used to test run its version of a Shiite Islamic State. Only those that went through the harrowing hardship that the group is capable of inflicting can truly appreciate the commission’s conclusion and recommendations on this group.
“These are the issues that the President must take into cognisance as he studies the report. As a soldier’s soldier, nothing must be done to cripple the military on the altar of political correctness because this is precisely what some people are waiting to see happen. Not emasculating the military must however be balanced with a demand that future operations and engagements stick to rules in terms of respect for human lives. “Since the clashes between soldiers and IMN members (Shiite Sect in Nigeria), led by Sheikh Ibraheem Al-Zakzakky, tempers have been frayed as several persons, organisations and even a foreign country sought to make political capital out of it. The Army as an institution was demonised beyond belief and some even openly canvassed for measure that would have amounted to waiving our sovereignty as a nation. This is something that must not be allowed to happen under Mr President’s watch.
“The report took the wind out of the sail of those who had expected they would ride on it to unleash mayhem. The numerous abuses and excesses of the IMN were adequately addressed by the commission of inquiry even though it made unnecessary concessions to the outlawed group that must be reviewed thoroughly to pave way for the immediate prosecution of IMN members to serve as deterrence to other persons across the country who may be planning to exploit sectarian or religious differences to cause strife.
“Any attempt to reject the panel’s finding is borne out of the fact that it did its job without becoming tools in the hands of parties to the crises.
  • Foundation grooms youths for leadership

    Foundation grooms youths for leadership

In his desire to make youths in his constituency be relevant in national and international leadership, the member representing Epe 2 State Constituency at the Lagos State House of Assembly, Olusegun Olulade, has organised special empowerment programme that aims at unlocking their potential. Oziegbe Okoeki reports.

The people had expected the usual form of empowerment which philanthropists and lawmakers hand out to the needy or members of their constituencies. That explains the huge crowd that converged on Bishop Abiodun Adetiloye Comprehensive College, Igboye in Epe for the Eleniyan Youth Empowerment summit.

As early as noon that day, youths from all the communities  had begun to throng the arena. There was spontaneous jubilation as Hon. Olusegun Olulade, popularly known as Eleniyan and his entourage made their way into the venue.

The roomy venue was largely suffused with traditional dancers who entertained the people. It was, indeed, an empowerment programme with a difference.

The lawmaker, who represents Epe 2 State Constituency at the Lagos State House of Assembly, introduced new vista in empowering his people. Those who are familiar with empowerment programmes organised by politicians or lawmakers, looked forward to gifts such as tricycles, motorcycles, sewing and grinding machines and other items to assist them start one form of business or the other or expand existing ones.

However, they were disappointed as the lawmaker introduced a new dimension to rendering help to his people. He did not want to give them fish. Rather, he decided to teach them how to fish in order to be self-reliant and contribute their quota to societal development. He decided to   empower them in a different, more enduring and impactful way. He was interested in their mental development.

In the circumstances, over 1, 000 youths across the state gathered at the Eleniyan Youth Empowerment Summit under the auspices of Eleniyancares Leadership Foundation organised by Hon. Olusegun Olulade, popularly known as Eleniyan.

The summit with the theme, ‘’Unlocking the Potential Within: Making Your Ideas Work”, was aimed at making the youth become conscious of their innate talents and work towards realising them in order to enhance their socio-economic well-being as well as contribute to the development of the their environment.

At hand to motivate and galvanise the youth to action was a motivational speaker, career/business coach and a social reformer, Mr. Muyiwa Afolabi, who was the Guest Lecturer. There was also a seminar session featuring publisher of Ovation Magazine, Chief Dele Momodu, member of the Lagos State House of Assembly and Nollywood actor, Desmond Elliot. Other Nollywood actors such as Chioma Chukwuma and Kate Henshaw were present. Agriculture expert, Samuel Damola Andre, ICT expert, Victor Diali and another motivational speaker, Dayo Israel were also present.

In his address to welcome the participants, Mr. Olulade urged the youth to identify their various potential, unlock them and use them to better themselves and their communities.

He said: “I am inspired by my humble background to start a youth-based foundation to bridge the gap between the youth and their aspirations to be part of our country’s journey to glory. Youths should be seen as assets and not liabilities. This programme is one of the focal points of my foundation.

Olulade stated that if the youth could realise their talents, they would discover that they have something to offer the world. He said: “Keep your dreams alive. Understand that to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe.”

According to the Project Co-ordinator, Mr. Abiola Hamid, the vision of the foundation “is to see a pool of credible, ethical, responsible and accountable leaders who can promote economic and socio-political status of Nigeria and Africa. Therefore, we are all out to discover young people who have leadership potential, provide them with needed supports and encouragement through training programmes, scholarships, exchange and mentorship opportunities and then immerse them into a networking system that gives them power to influence their communities and the nation.”

The Eleniyancares Leadership Foundation, he said, was aimed at raising credible African young leaders through capacity building and training.

The guest speaker defined potential as the ability or the capacity to do or become something. According to him, one’s potential is one’s ability to do something, adding that the youth should be greater and better than they currently are.

He noted that everyone is born with blank minds but that people’s minds are shaped by their environment.

“The people around you make impressions on your mind; then your mind begins to develop and grow. Your mind now becomes a mind-set. The people that set your minds are your parents and siblings,” Afolabi said.

He informed them that God did not create and put them in Nigeria by mistake, but that He put them there to make a difference.

“You must stop the blame game and accept responsibilities. The greatest kind of hard work is the work you do on yourself. It is working very hard on your character, emotions and skills. Find the right association. Don’t get emotional about your mistakes. Never give up on your skills, life would test and challenge you. You also need to fear God so that you would do the right thing when nobody is watching you,” he stated.

Publisher of Ovation Magazine advised them not to be afraid of challenges, saying that he was able to achieve success in life based on his tenacity of purpose. He said he studied Yoruba as first degree and later pursued a Master’s degree in Literature in English.

“I joined Concord Newspaper against my wish in 1988 when I couldn’t get a job. I later got several promotions in the media house before I left for Classique Magazine. I also sold bread for some time.”

He informed them that it is better to try something and fail rather than not trying at all, saying that “something must shake you in life, but if you stay focussed, you would get there.”

Other discussants shared their experiences and how they achieved successes in their various careers, even as they urged them to believe in themselves and be determined to be successful in life.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, congratulated Mr  Olulade on his ability to put the programme together for the youth, saying, “it is timely because it falls in line with my passion and enthusiasm to ensure that both the youth and the state are developed.”

Represented by the Commissioner for Wealth Creation and Employment, Mr. Babatunde Durosimi-Etti, Governor Ambode said: “The programme falls in line with the strategic youth plan being developed in the state.”

In his goodwill message, Senator Olorunmibe Mamora commended Mr. Olulade for being a man of the people and for his passion for the youth.

“You have done well because you have taken the concept of effective and efficient representation which is the most important role of legislators very serious,” he said.

Mamora, who urged the youth to be positive-minded, said every destiny was a product of thinking.

“Be positive in your thinking; ideas rule the world. When you come up with big ideas, you can make a lot of money. Take maximum advantage of this summit,” he said.

One of the participants, Taiwo Yusuf said though the expectation of most of the participants was different from what they experienced and different from their idea of empowerment, they received something useful from the event as they were empowered in a different way.

“We needed something tangible such as capital that can enhance or better our living condition because it is not easy to start up a business as banks are not forthcoming with assistance.”

He, however, thanked the lawmaker for exposing them to the programme and giving them the necessary motivation to believe in themselves and forge ahead in life.

  • Foundation urges balanced diet for malnourished IDP children

A Non Governmental Organization (NGO), YellowJerrycan‎ Save a Child, Lend a Hand Foundation has called on the Federal government to adopt a balance diet template to tackle malnutrition affecting Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in the various camps in Nigeria. Initiator of the foundation, Ms. Adaora Onyechere, who said this at a press conference in Abuja, urged well-meaning Nigerians assist in tackling malnutrition among children in the IDP camps in the North-East.

Onyechere, who explained that there is an increase of non balanced diet among the camps, also noted that most of the IDPs who need the food usually don’t get it. She said: “We are saying that it is not enough to just send food to the camps. If the food were enough, they will not be in the state they are right now. There is an increase of non balanced diet among the camps. “It is interesting as well because when you look at the formation and structure of the distribution of the food, the people who need the food usually don’t get the food. The accessibility of the food is not even made available.

“There is no monitoring and evaluation system. We do know there are staple food been distributed. These are not the majority of the diet these people need. We have people who are toddlers.” She warned that if the federal government refuses to put a template in place to savage malnutrition in the various IDP camps, the situation could result in the outbreak of crimes. According to her, templates and structures are important in the fight against malnutrition, adding that there was need to depoliticize the issue and see it more as a time bomb waiting to explode.

“The structure and the template should begin with one camp at a time; it is not enough to take 70 truckloads of food to each of the IDPs camp. They need to know what were they being given, what are the intervention plans given, what are the age categories, to what extent are these food going to be distributed and what is the template to be adopted for every other camp. “We need to harmonise. The federal government is doing all it can. I believe that certain duties could overwhelm NEMA as an agency. The federal government should begin to adopt template that are being posted by either NGOs, or well tried research organizations to be able to intimate all of these templates across board ‎so that in the interim we can have a referral and say this has worked for one camp and we can actually duplicate it in other camps.

“If we don’t have a template, we might deal with not just malnutrition we might actually do with‎ outbreak of crimes because what we will begin to see is people leaving camp to look for substitute for likelihood especially for keep up with nutrition. Rice, oil and onions are not staple foods, when a child has no access to milk, beans after breastfeeding is bound to be malnourished.” ‎Also, Representative of Centre for Women and Adolescents Campaign, Hajia Asmau Soda, noted that meals required to curb malnutrition in the IDP camps are not being provided. “I think the emphasis is on the real food needed to fight malnutrition is really not provided probably because they are more expensive,” she said.
