  • Four die in Lagos train accident

    Four persons – three men and a woman – were yesterday killed when an Abule Egba-bound train crushed a tricycle at Iju Ishaga, a Lagos suburb.

    It was learnt that the tricycle, with four passengers and the driver, had attempted to quickly cross the rail at Oke Aro when it got trapped around 6.45am.

    It was learnt that motorists and passersby  stopped when they sighted the train from afar, but the tricyclist thought he could pass before the train got close.

    One of the occupants, The Nation gathered, escaped unhurt. The remains of the deceased littered the scene.

    Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) General Manager (GM) Adesina Tiamiyu said findings showed that the accident was caused by the  tricyclist’s recklessness.

    The agency, he said, received a distress call around 6:52am and activated its emergency response team.

    He said: “On arrival on the scene, it was gathered that a tricycle with five people inside, had a collision with a moving train.

    “We learnt that the accident was caused by the tricyclist’s recklessness, as he attempted to cross the rail while a train was coming.

    “Unfortunately four persons- three men and one woman died. One man, however, escaped unhurt.

    “The agency’s response team and other stakeholders, including the Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps (LNSC), Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) rushed to the scene.

    “The bodies were recovered and handed over to SEHMU, to be moved to the mortuary. Motorists and tricyclists are advised to be patient when crossing the rail, to avoid loss of lives.”

     

  • Four die in Edo road accident

    Four persons have been confirmed dead while another one sustained injuries in an accident occurred at Jattu Junction in Auchi, Etsako West local government of Edo state.

    Eye witnesses said the accident occurred on Friday when a truck heading towards Benin from Abuja allegedly had brake failure and rammed into vehicles trapped in traffic at the junction.

    They said the truck loaded with cement killed four persons instantly.

    Head of Operation and Acting Sector Commander of the FRSC in Edo State, Samson Eniyemo, attributed the accident to break failure and over speeding.

    Samson said the accident involved two trucks and three other vehicles.

    He called on motorists to always observe safety caution and speed limit to save lives.

     

  • Four die in mining pond collapse

    Four miners died Wednesday in Funga, Wase Local Government Area of Plateau State, when a mining pond collapsed.

    The victims – Usman Abdullahi (33); Abdullahi Alhaji -Eggi (29); Sufiyanu Inusa (25) and Dan Kwala (30) – are from Wase, Kanam and Qua-an pan councils.

    An eyewitness said the mining site was discovered recently “and people have been trooping there to mine precious minerals.

    “When the pond collapsed, other miners tried to rescue the victims but to no avail. They were brought out dead.”

    Chairman of Wase council Hassan Garba visited the pond and warned on the dangers of illegal mining.

    “The government will deal with anyone caught indulging in such illegal activity, which has brought grief upon the state,” Garba warned.

    The victims have since been buried according to Islamic rites.

  • Four die in Ilorin accident

    Four persons died in last Thursday’s accident in Oke-Ose, Ilorin, Kwara State.

    The victims are three Mass Communication students of the Kwara State Polytechnic and a taxi driver. They died instantly.

    Eyewitnesses said the accident involved a truck and a taxi. The students were in the taxi.

    A candle light procession was held on Friday in honour of the deceased.

    The students appealed to the government to ensure that the road construction going on in the vicinity is completed early. They urge traffic officials to control the situation pending completion of the project.

  • Four die, five vehicles damaged in Jos

    A trailer conveying diesel on Wednesday killed four persons and destroyed five vehicles at Mararaba Jama’a in Kuru, Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.

    Police spokesman Terna Tyopev confirmed this to News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) yesterday.

    Mararaba Jama’a is a busy spot linking Jos to other parts of the state.

    Tyopev said the trailer driver lost control, and ran into five vehicles.

    Two persons died instantly; two others were confirmed dead in the hospital.

    He said: “A trailer carrying diesel to Bauchi ran into five vehicles and killed four persons at Mararaba Jama’a.

    ‘’Preliminary investigations showed that the trailer had brake failure and the driver, who was alone, lost control.

    “The trailer ran into five vehicles parked within the vicinity. Two died on the spot while the two injured died in hospital.”

    Tyopev added that the bodies have been deposited at the mortuary of Ola Hospital, Zawan.

    Four die as car rams into Okada in Ogun

    Four persons, including a cyclist, were killed yesterday on Ijebu-Igbo road in Ogun State.

    The accident involved a Nissan Primera and a commercial motorcycle (Okada).

    The car reportedly left Oru, heading to Ijebu-Igbo, but lost control, and rammed into the Okada, which has a passenger.

    Spokesman of Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) Babatunde Akinbiyi said three of the victims died on the way to Olabisi Onabanjo University Teaching Hospital at Sagamu; the other died at State Hospital in Ijebu-Igbo.

    Babatunde said the dead were two men and two women.

    “Two occupants of the Okada died as well as two in the Nissan car, out of the six occupants in it when the accident happened. The Nissan is a private car used for commercial purpose,” he said.

    Four die in Ondo road crash

    Four persons, including two suspected commercial sex workers, have been confirmed dead in a motor accident at Yaba, in Ondo town of Ondo State.

    The accident, which involved a brown Volvo car  and a truck occurred at 10:30 p.m on Sunday while the victims were returning from a night show.

    It was gathered that the Volvo driver, said to be a popular trader at Ododibo Street in Ondo town, was returning from Agbogboke.

    He was said to have clashed with a commercial motorcyclist and escaped from the scene.

    The driver reportedly veered off the road and rammed into the stationary truck beside the road.

    Scores of symphatisers struggled to remove the bodies of the victims trapped inside the vehicle.

    Several personal effects of the victims and human parts littered the spot.

    Some sympathisers, including families and friends of the victims, wailed uncontrollably on the scene.

    A senior police officer attached to the Motor Traffic Division (MTD) of the Yaba Divisional Police Station, who participated in the rescue operation but spoke in confidence, described the accident as unfortunate.

    The MTD official said it happened barely nine days after one of the victims had a similar accident with a commercial motorcycle operator in the town.

    The police officer said the divisional station got a distress call from the residents, following a bang from the accident scene few metres to their office.

    He said some officers rushed to the scene for the rescue while the residents joined them.

    The police officers confirmed the death of three persons on the spot, while another one was injured and rushed to Ondo Specialist Hospital for treatment.

    Doctors reportedly confirmed the injured dead by the doctors.

    The Ondo town Unit Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), RS Unit 11, Olarewaju Adewumi, an Assistant Corps Commander (ACC), said he was on annual leave.

    The Head of Operations in Ondo town’s Unit Command, Mrs. Mary Oladele, described the development as unfortunate.

     

  • Four die in Lagos-Ibadan road accident

    Four persons died yesterday in a multiple vehicle accident on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.
    Twelve others were injured.
    The accident, which involved an IVECO truck, a white Toyota car and a bus in the fleet of Delta State transport firm, occurred at ASCON, near the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) Camp.
    The Sector Commander for Ogun State Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr. Oladele Clement, told The Nation four persons were burnt to death.
    He said the injured were taken to the RCCG Hospital.
    Oladele said FRSC operatives, other traffic and emergency agencies cleared obstructions and controlled traffic.
    The Nation gathered that motorists were advised to use alternate routes out of Lagos, especially via Ikorodu or Sango Ota, and same for those connecting Lagos should avoid Mowe end into Lagos.

    Four die of Lassa fever in Plateau

    Four persons have died of Lassa fever and five cases were confirmed in Plateau State since last December, it was learnt yesterday.
    Commissioner for Health Kunden Deyin told News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that 80 per cent of the mortality rate was due to late presentation of patients to health care facilities.
    Deyin said: “The mortality rate is as high as 80 per cent; this is because people report very late. Lassa fever is best managed when patients start taking the drug within the first week of contracting the disease.
    “The symptoms are similar to that of malaria; symptoms such as nausea, body weakness and joint pains; it is at advanced stage that bleeding from the eyes, nose, mouth or private part occur.”
    The commissioner, who said getting drugs for treatment was difficult as it is not sold in the open market, added that the state was trying to access the drugs from the Federal Ministry of Health.
    According to him, healthcare workers in the state are on red alert and have “high index of suspicion”. The ministry has also begun sensitisation in Jos-Bukuru and the 17 local government councils to enlighten the people on preventive measures.

    Four die, two injured in accident

    Four persons including three suspected armed robbers were yesterday confirmed dead after their vehicle fell on a mechanic.

     The incident occurred around 2:20pm at the Iddo Terminus near Eko Bridge.

     It was gathered that a gang of give armed robbers who snatched a grey coloured Hyundai JX35 marked SMK485CM from a priest, were fleeing when the vehicle skidded off the bridge and fell on a mechanic, Nwamba.

     The pedestrian and three of the robbery suspects were said to have died instantly, while one escaped with injuries and the last suspect was rushed to the hospital.

     It was gathered that a locally made pistol, a priest’s robe and a plague were found in the vehicle.

    Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) General Manager Tiamiyu Adeniyi said the bodies were handed over to the appropriate agency.

     “Preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle was suspected to have been snatched at gun point with five suspected armed persons. Three of the suspected armed robbers died immediately, one escaped with injury while the fifth person was taken to the hospital.

     “The dead bodies were taken to the mortuary, while vehicle was towed to Denton Police State, Ebutte Metta. Items found on them include: One locally made double barrel pistol with five live cartridges; one laptop; handset and a dollar note.”
