  • Four killed in Makurdi cult clash

Four persons have been reportedly killed in a clash between rival cult groups in Makurdi, the Benue State capital.

Makurdi, Otukpo and Gboko towns are known for cult-related activities, which have recently increased.

The incident, which occured around 7 p.m on Awe Street and around Benue State Library, Wurukum, was said to have been sparked off by the killing of a rival cult member who reportedly returned home from Abuja, the nation’s capital, for his father’s burial.

The Nation learnt that the first victim was shot at a funeral for his father on Monday evening.

The attacker, said to be a 15-year-old boy, was said to have been chased and killed with stones near the state library.

  • Four killed in Bayelsa cult clash

Renewed supremacy battle between two cult groups has claimed four lives in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.

It was gathered that one of the cult groups at the weekend mowed down one God-do-well from Delta State.

The victim, aged 34, was reportedly attacked with machetes and left in the pool of his blood by a rival gang at the Swali Market in Yenagoa.

The assailants, numbering about 40, were said to have killed their victim to avenge the murder of three of their members reportedly murdered by the deceased gang.

It was learnt that the killers stormed the market, shot sporadically to scare traders and apprehended their target who was killed in cold blood.

On the day the three members were killed, suspected cult members were said to have raided a section of the market following unsettled crisis.

A petty trader, who spoke in confidence, described the raid as terrible saying the three victims were killed without mercy.

He said: “It was a terrible situation when hoodlums stormed the market, around the zone where tubers of yam are sold.

“A middle-aged man was killed with a machete. They left a machete in his head.

“They usually come to the market, smoke Indian hemp, play gamble and sometimes rob traders of their monies”.

A source, who witnessed the killing of God-do-well, said the victim was recently released from prison.

“He told us that he renounced cultism. He said it was the reason he was hustling to survive at the market.

“But some people said he was still hanging around with bad boys in the area.

“I think they just killed him to provoke his gang. All these bad boys are always seen around this market on a daily basis.

“They know themselves because they are always in the market area.”

Most of the traders, who were apprehensive, pleaded with the security agents to come to their aid by providing security at the market.

When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Butswat Asinim, said only two suspected cult members were killed in the clash.

Asinim added that the police had beefed up security around the market.

  • Four killed as Customs, smugglers clash in Ogun

No fewer than four persons were feared dead while six others sustained gunshot wounds yesterday in Ogun State as operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service and smugglers engaged in a shootout at Ilara, in Imeko-Afon Local Government Area.

It was gathered the incident happened at the border town with the Republic of Benin at about 8.30am.

Sources said trouble began when suspected smugglers while moving bags of rice in a convoy to Abeokuta, Ogun State, were accosted by a joint anti-smuggling patrol team made up of the operatives of the Nigeria Customs Service and soldiers.

It was said that as the soldiers and the Customs officers attempted to impound the contraband goods, the smugglers put up a stiff resistance, which resulted in an exchange of fire, leaving about four people dead and six others with gunshot wounds.

The Public Relations Officer, Ogun State Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, Abdullahi Maiwada, confirmed the incident but he could not give the exact number of casualties.

He admitted there was an interdiction between the Customs and smugglers at the Ilara border town yesterday.

He said: “I learnt there was an interdiction between our men (Customs) and smugglers in Ilara border town when the smugglers wanted to move bags of rice in their vehicles out of the town to their receivers.

  • Delta: Four killed as Ogbe-Ijoh/Aladja crisis festers

Delta: Four killed as Ogbe-Ijoh/Aladja crisis festers

There is a fresh security concern in the Aladja/Ogbe-Ijoh axis of Delta State after a clash between Urhobo and Ijaw elements in the area claimed no fewer than four lives between Wednesday and yesterday.

Allegations and counter-allegations of abductions and subsequent slaughtering of victims spread like wildfire   last week, with the people of Aladja, an Urhobo community in Udu council area of the state, accusing their Ogbe-Ijoh Kingdom neighbours, an Ijaw community in Warri South-West council area, of abducting and killing two Aladja indigenes; Moses Kporoko and Saha, last Tuesday.

The claim by Aladja was followed on Wednesday by Ogbe-Ijoh, claiming that two men from Opuede community in Gbaramatu, another Ijaw kingdom in Warri South-West council area – Solomon Ikoto and Samuel Agolo – were kidnapped and allegedly killed by Aladja people.

Residents of Oporoza, headquarters of Gbaramatu, consequently threatened to retaliate if the missing persons were not found immediately.

The situation degenerated yesterday after persons suspected to be armed Ijaw youths from Fenegbene community in Warri South council area abducted one Tuwere Metabor, a native of Aladja community, while fishing along the Warri River at about 10:20am.

The abduction is suspected to be in retaliation for the alleged killing of the two Gbaramatu men.

Chairman of Opuede community, Williams Tortor, who confirmed the alleged abduction of the youths, however appealed to the leadership of Aladja to prevail on their youths to release the abductees unconditionally.

He pleaded that should they have been killed, their corpses should be released for burial.

Tortor who spoke to reporters in Warri, also asked  the state government to arrest the situation.

According to him, allowing the Ogbe-Ijoh/Aladja long standing communal crisis to spread to Gbaramatu kingdom and other Ijaw communities would worsen an already bad situation, and snowball into a major intra communal war.

He said:”Gbaramatu people are not part and parcel of Ogbe-Ijoh/Aladja dispute. We have never been part of the crisis, and we don’t support any community against the other.

“We have been playing the peaceful role of good neighbours but we have never being involved so why should they extend their crisis to us by abducting our boys.

“We are appealing for their unconditional release, dead or alive, we don’t want further trouble so that the issue doesn’t escalate more than it is now. If they have killed them, let them release their corpses, but if they are alive they should please release them unconditionally.”

Also, the Ijaw Youth Council, (IYC) Gbaramatu clan chapter, in a statement by Godstime Ayetan, Godswill Doubra Wuruyai, and Frank Ekpemupolo, has given the abductors 48-hours ultimatum to release their victims, saying that abduction of Gbaramatu indigenes could have been done in error.

When contacted, the spokesman of the Delta State Police Command, DSP Andrew Aniamaka, said no case of abduction had been recorded around the area yesterday, although there was a case of suspected missing person, which was recorded two days earlier.

He said the Ovwian/Aladja axis was calm, adding that investigation was still on over the suspected missing person.

  • Four ‘killed’, three injured as Customs chases smugglers

Four ‘killed’, three injured as Customs chases smugglers

At least four persons were feared killed and three others injured yesterday after Nigerian Customs Service (NIS) officers shot sporadically while chasing rice smugglers.

The incidents occurred at Moshalashi and Kola Bus stops at Alagbado and Ajegunle in Alakuko area of Lagos.

It was gathered that the Customs operatives, allegedly attached to the Federal Operations, suddenly started shooting sporadically into crowded areas.

The four persons, who were said to have been hit by stray bullets, were commercial motorcyclists.

Among them, The Nation gathered, was a 25-year-old man identified as Saheed, whose wife was said to be pregnant.

It was gathered that the operatives, who rode on four patrol vehicles, took one of the victims as they fled. They were said to have injured about three other persons who were taken to an undisclosed hospital.

It was gathered that the operatives while fleeing, threatened to shoot policemen from Alakuko Division, who attempted to stop them.

A resident said the officers acted as though they were drunk.

He said: “It was around 7am. I was inside my house and suddenly I started hearing gunshots. I looked through the window to see what was happening and people were running. I saw about four vehicles belonging to Customs and the officers were just shooting anyhow.

“Later, I heard they were chasing rice smugglers but all the people they killed were Okada riders. Bullets hit one in the stomach, another person was hit on the leg and another one on the hand. About four people died. Blood was everywhere and the Customs men escaped.”

The Nation gathered that the residents took to the streets in protest against the operatives. They were said to have vandalised several properties and burnt tyres on the major roads, creating gridlock in the process.

Commercial motorcyclists were said to have attempted to raze an Oando gas station, where the Customs officers usually stayed but they were stopped by policemen led by the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) Commander, Tunji Disu, an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP).

Efforts to get the Customs’ spokesman, Uche Ejesieme’s reaction failed.

Police spokesperson Dolapo Badmos, a Superintendent (SP) said one person was killed.

She said: “Some Custom officials were on the trail of a vehicle, in the process they  started shooting. One passerby was shot to death around Ajegunle in Alakuko. A patrol team led by the DPO of Alakuko Division, moved to the area to douse the tension.

“They fired sporadically and escaped from the scene. The dead body was evacuated to the morgue. Investigation is ongoing.”

  • Four killed, others injured as gunmen raid community

Four killed, others injured as gunmen raid community

No fewer than four persons were yesterday killed with several others injured after gunmen stormed the Banku Estate, Ibafo area of Ogun State.

This is coming barely two weeks after a prominent traditional ruler was abducted and only released after N5million ransom was paid.

It was gathered that the criminals, suspected to be dislodged pipeline vandals arrived the area in three buses at about 9pm on Wednesday.

They were said to have stormed the residence of a businessman, apparently to harm him but met his absence.

Out of frustration, the criminals were said to have fired sporadically killing innocent people.

A source who expressed worries that the dislodged vandals have taken to kidnapping, said that it was difficult for the criminals to vandalise pipelines following high pressure of security agents.

He said: “They now feel that they can make more money from kidnapping since it has become increasingly difficult for them to operate as vandals in the area. The hoodlums arrived around 9pm on Wednesday. When they arrived, they fired over 80 shots to scare away people.

“They later headed for the home of a prominent businessman in the area. As at the time they arrived the place, the target was not home. Out of anger, the hoodlums started firing sporadic shots. Two of the occupants of the house died during the shootout while three others sustained bullet wounds.”

Confirming the incident, the spokesman for Ogun State command, Muyiwa Adejobi said three others were injured.

He assured that the command alongside other security agencies will get the pepertrators who he said we’re dislodged vandals from the riverine.

“We are pained at the loss of any Nigerian life. The police commissioner has been engaging other security agencies and stakeholders to ensure safety if lives and properties,” he said.

  • Four killed as fuel-laden bus explodes

Four killed as fuel-laden bus explodes

Four persons were yesterday burnt beyond recognition when a bus loaded with many 50-litre kegs of petrol exploded in Isolo, Lagos.

The bus, with registration number, KTU 418 XK, was said to have rammed into a stationary truck on Musiratu Lasisi Street, following a brake failure around 4.30am.

Three died on the spot; the fourth, Segun Oluwole, died at Gbagada General Hospital around 7pm.

According to eyewitnesses, the bus was coming from Imota in Agbowa-Imota Local Council Development Area (LCDA) of Lagos State.

Segun, who was a 17-year-old Senior Secondary School pupil, was placed on oxygen after being rushed to the hospital.

He was in pains, moaning: “Where are my friends, Where is Tunde and the landlord?” until he died few hours later.

A motorcyclist, Femi Ajibola, who said he was woken up from sleep by a loud bang around 5am, told The Nation that only the driver survived.

He said he heard the driver screaming “Alhaja is in the bus”, and crying for help.

Ajibola said: “I was sleeping at the top of the building because of heat and suddenly, I heard a loud noise like bomb. So, I looked down and saw fire. I woke up my other colleagues and told them that something was wrong and that there was fire. I went down and removed my motorcycle and that was when I saw one man sitting by the pavement of Kembos school. He was screaming for help but no one could near him because the fire was much. He came out from the passenger seat and eventually he died.

“But the driver also came out of the bus from the other side. He was rescued by the people in the nearby Celestial Church of Christ and was taken to Isolo General Hospital. The bus had about 15 kegs of 50 litres and all of them contained petrol. It looks like they are vandals or they went to buy vandalised fuel because there were few seats in the bus.”

Another eyewitness, Deji Ogunleye told The Nation that while two bodies were retrieved, the third was completely dismembered.

He said Red Cross officials who got there before other agencies could not do much until the arrival of fire fighters.

“At first, they tried to use fire extinguisher to put out the fire on the body of one of the victims but they could not achieve much.”

Two bodies, covered in disposable bags were seen beside the school gate amid a large crowd.

Isolo Local Council Development Area (LCDA) Executive Secretary Olusegun Jubril, who visited the scene, said no one knew where the bus came from nor where it was headed.

He said the calamity would have been worst if the stationary truck did not stop the bus from ramming into a bakery.

Jubril said: “I was called this morning that a bus caught fire; that no one knew where they were coming from and where they were going; that the bus collided with another vehicle selling sachet water.

“Only one person survived (later died in hospital). Two bodies were recovered. I also heard that there was one Alhaja inside the bus. The only person who survived said that. The incident happened around 5am and I was called around 5:30am. I rushed down immediately because I stay in the neighbourhood. That was how we started rescue operation.

“Maybe the bus was coming from a far place where they went to do rubbish. And maybe they were running from security agents. People must be mindful of their actions and take precautions. It is pointless engaging in illegal activities,” he said.

Director, Lagos State Fire Service Mr. Rasak Fadipe confirmed to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that the men were burnt to death after their vehicle carrying plastic jerry cans of fuel caught fire.

Fadipe said: “It is likely they were involved in petroleum bunkering in Ikorodu area. The driver lost control and hit a stationary truck. The driver tried to swerve to the other side and the vehicle ran into the gutter, spilling the contents of the jerry cans which resulted to fire. It took my men about an hour to put out the fire in the gutter and the vehicle. The driver was one of those roasted to death in the bus.’’

The late Segun’s mother, Mrs. Roseline Oluwole, said their landlord whom she identified as Kebe, phoned her on Monday night that he wanted to see her son.

The 45-year-old mother of five said when her son was leaving the house, he told her the landlord said there was a bricklaying job, adding: “We live in Imota and my son lives with me. Since the landlord (Kebe) doesn’t collect a kobo from me, I asked my son to go to him. In fact I borrowed the transport fare I gave him. He left home around 11am and I pleaded with him not to stay out late since we had nothing to eat. He was even acting funny and I told him to stay behind if he didn’t want to go. When it was around 6pm, I dialled Kebe’s mobile line but it wasn’t reachable even when I asked my neighbour, she said it is possible my son was playing with his children.

Mrs. Oluwole, who trades in fish, said she was shocked when an unfamiliar number called her around 5am, saying her son was involved in an accident.

“I was scared. I didn’t know what to do. I dialled the number back and I was told he has been taken to the hospital. It was the money my daughter made from the ponmo (hides and skin) she hawked on Monday I used as transport fare to the hospital. I don’t have a kobo to take care of him. Since his father and I separated in 2009, my son has been taking care of the family. He does all kinds of menial jobs to cater for our needs. We live in an uncompleted building. We live from hand to mouth. He was meant to sit for his West African Examination last year but he was ill. I don’t know what they went to do. He is a small boy. My children have been forced to stop school because their father is not forthcoming. I pray my son survives because he is in pains. It was good Samaritans that contributed some amount of money when I couldn’t bring out a kobo. I need help. I can’t watch my son die,” she said.

The late Segun’s sister, Mayowa, said they had always been fending for themselves, adding that she hawks ponmo to survive.

“We have nothing. I was in Junior Secondary School III when my mother said she could no longer afford the fee. Even when she took me to my father’s place in Ibadan, he couldn’t do anything till I resorted to hawking. My elder sister abandoned her daughter with us. If my parents are together, all this won’t be happening to us. We are really in the highest stage of poverty.”

  • Four killed in Mushin gang war

Four killed in Mushin gang war

Four persons have been killed in renewed cult clashes in Mushin, Lagos.

The clashes were sparked by the killing of a security guard identified as Ja Rule on New Year eve.

It was learnt that the age-long rivalry between the Aye and Eiye confraternities escalated after the death of Ja Rule, who allegedly was disembowelled by his killers.

Three others have been killed since Saturday.

According to sources around Olorunsola Street, where the incident occurred, the cultists shot Ja Rule but the bullet did not penetrate his body.

“The cult groups have been fighting since New Year Day. More than four people have been killed already.

“The fight started on New Year Eve after Ja Rule was butchered with knives like a goat around 11:55am.

“Ja Rule works at Adesuwa Guest House on Olorunsola Street; that is where he stayed too. So, after work on Thursday, he was supposed to go to church but he stopped at a compound not far from the guest house where he ate and was discussing with his friends.

“As they were outside, two men came and identified him. When they saw him, they shot him but the bullet did not enter. He ran and they chased him.

“After a while, he came back to the compound. His friend was telling him that they should go to church but he refused and sat where they had earlier shot him.

“After sometime, many boys came to the compound again and surrounded the place. When they carried their clothes up, we saw cutlasses that were hidden underneath and they attacked him with the weapons.

“People ran for their lives because no one wanted to fall victim. Ja Rule ran towards the railway but I heard some of the gang members had laid siege to the area.

“I also heard that those ones caught him and cut him into pieces. After killing him, they left his corpse near the railway,” one of the residents who refused to be named said.

Angered by his death, his gang members were said to have taken to the streets hunting for his killers from Olorunsola to Challenge areas.

Lagos State Command’s spokesman, Joseph Offor, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), could not be reached on telephone for comment.

  • 4 FAMILY MEMBERS KILLED IN LAGOS BUILDING COLLAPSE

4 FAMILY MEMBERS KILLED IN LAGOS BUILDING COLLAPSE

No fewer than four persons, including three children, were dead after another building collapsed in the early hours of yesterday in Lagos.

The building, a bungalow located at Orisha Street, Isheri, Magodo caved in while it rained heavily.

The deceased were identified as Isayo Odiah (23); DeSylva Odiah (15); Clinton Odiah (13) and eight-year-old Endurance Odiah.

The deceased were said to be siblings from the same mother, who was said to have collapsed and rushed to a nearby hospital.

It was learnt that Mayflower Hospital where the mother of seven was initially taken to rejected her because “there was no card” before she was eventually rushed to Tabasco Hospital.

A resident of the collapsed building said: “Around 6am, we heard a loud sound. But we did not know that the upper part of another building beside the bungalow has fallen on it.

“Unfortunately, it fell just on the room where Mr. Godwin Odiah’s children were sleeping. The man has seven children but three of them were not around.

“He was the one who saw it and started screaming for help. He said he was in the bathroom when he heard the sound but did not know that it was in his compound.

“Another building also collapsed again but I don’t know if anyone was killed.

“Government needs to do something in this area. It is sandy and water logged. I think the incident was not unconnected with the heavy rain and the topography in the area,” said the resident.

Emergency workers comprising the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), the Lagos State Fire Service, Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) and the police were on ground to manage the situation.

Confirming the incident, NEMA’s spokesman for the southwest, Ibrahim Farinloye, said the collapse was caused by mudslides from the cleavage of a hill beside River Ogun.

He said: “Four persons were recovered dead. The cause of the collapse was the heavy rainfall.

“Mudslides from the cleavage of a hill beside River Ogun hit the three- bedroom flat, unfortunately the room where the deceased were recovered was the one hit by the mudslides.

“Another mudslide fell on one single room building in the area but no one was trapped there.”

The four bodies were handed over to the family by LASEMA and policemen from the Isheri division.

They were later moved to a community cemetery in the area by a SEMU ambulance amid tears from residents where the burial took place.

LASEMA boss, Micheal Akindele, said the people have been advised to vacate their homes temporarily, adding that some buildings in the area have been marked.
