  • Four remanded for alleged robbery

    Four youths charged with robbing a man of his valuables worth N177, 000 were yesterday remanded in Kirikiri Prisons by an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Chukwuani Amechi, 19; Adigun Lateef, 20; Gbadamosi Shuaibu, 18; and Uko Saviour, 19, are being tried for alleged conspiracy, arming themselves with offensive weapons and robbery.

    Magistrate J. A. Adegun declined to take their plea, pending advice by Lagos State Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    The defendants and others at large committed the offence on March 3 at Itire, Lagos, Prosecuting Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) Clifford Ogu told the court.

    He said the defendants armed themselves with weapons to rob Ismaila Saka of his belongings.

    “The defendants entered the shop of the complainant with cutlasses and bottles, commanding him to surrender his phones and cash, threatening to harm him.

    “They forcefully collected his four phones, valued at N139, 000 and N38, 000 cash totalling N177, 000 and ran away.

    “When the defendants were later arrested, they confessed that they have sold the phones,” the prosecutor said.

  • Four remanded in Kirikiri for impregnating girl, 15

    Four men, who allegedly defiled and impregnated a 15-year-old girl, were yesterday remanded at Kirikiri Prisons by an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.

    Henry Edmond, 47, metal fabricator; Richard Effiong, 22, businessman; Simeon Michael, 30, self-employed and Ashumu Muhammed, 33, security guard, were ordered to be kept in prison custody, pending advice by the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

    Magistrate B.O. Osunsanmi said: “Based on the sensitivity of the case, it is difficult to grant bail. Bail will be at the discretion of the court. The case file should be documented and sent to the office of the DPP for advice.”

    The accused committed the offences between December 2016 and May 2018 at different parts of Ajah and Lekki, Lagos, the prosecutor, Ezekiel Ayorinde, an Assistant Superintendent (ASP) told the court.

    He said the accused unlawfully assaulted the girl by penetrating her private parts on separate occasions.

    “The accused have been having sexual intercourse with the girl which resulted in pregnancy,” Ayorinde said.

    Ayorinde said when the girl’s aunty discovered that she was pregnant, she questioned her.

    He said: “The girl, who is five months pregnant, mentioned all the men that have been sleeping with her since her aunty brought her to Lagos in 2016 to be helping her take care of her children.

    “Her aunty’s husband, Henry Edmond, was the first to start having sex with her and he always threatened to kill her if she tells the aunty. The other accused sleep with her in their houses and shops in the process of hawking `puff puff’ for her aunty.

    “The case was reported and the accused were arrested,” the prosecutor said.

    The offence contravenes Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).”

    The case continues on July 23.

  • Four remanded for alleged arson, murder

    An Ebute-Meta Magistrates’ Court in Lagos State has remanded four men at Ikoyi Prison for alleged involvement in arson and murder.

    The accused – Bashir Hammed, 20; Nura Idris, 28; Dini Mohammed, 25; and Ismaila Abdullahi, 25, are facing a seven-count charge.

    The Magistrate, Mrs. A.S. Okubule, did not take their plea.

    She directed the prosecution to forward the case file to the state Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) for advice.

    The magistrate adjourned the case till November 10 for mention.

    The prosecutor, Chinalu Uwadione, had told the court that the accused allegedly committed the offences on September 15 at Okokomaiko , a Lagos suburb.

    He said the accused allegedly set ablaze a building belonging to Chief `Seriki” of Hausa community in Okokomaiko.

    Uwadione alleged that the accused slit the throat of Mr. Hamza Liman Mairama and shot 50-year-old Mr. Garba Halili.

    He told the court that the accused allegedly committed the offences following a disagreement between them and the deceased.

    Four remanded for ‘possession of narcotics’

    • Two arrested with 500g of cocaine

    Four people have been remanded in prison by a Magistrate’s Court in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, for alleged unlawful possession of narcotics.

    Ibrahim Ayotunde, Adefisayo Sunday (18), Mercy Anthony (36) and Ikeade Bose Esan (45) were yesterday arraigned by the National Drug  Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

    The charge sheet stated that Ayotunde was arrested on November 29 on the Akure-Ilesha Expressway with 10.8kg of hemp.

    Sunday was arrested at Ile-Ife for allegedly possessing 700g of hemp.

    The charge sheet reads: “You, Ikeade Bose Esan, had in your possession 571.6kg of hemp, otherwise known as cannabis sativa, a narcotic drug and thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable under Section 19 of the NDLEA Act of 2004.”

    The prosecutor, John Amel, told the court that Anthony was arrested on December 4 on the Ilesa/Akure Highway with 17.9kg of hemp.

    However, no plea was taken.

    The presiding judge, Magistrate Olusola Aluko, directed counsel to the accused, Shaibu Gomina and Mrs Bose Adeyinka, to file applications for their clients’ bail.

    The judge ordered that the accused be remanded in Ilesa Prison and adjourned till January 20.

    In Ondo State, the NDLEA arrested two suspected drug peddlers with 500g of cocaine in Ondo West Local Government Area.

    The State Commander, Mohammed Sokoto, broke the news at a briefing on the command’s activities in Akure, the state capital.

    Sokoto refused to give further details about the suspects, saying they have been charged to court.

    He said: “We have arrested two persons and investigation is still on and as soon as they are convicted, we will let you know.”

    The commander said 113,305. 305.844kg of cannabis sativa  were seized between January and December.

    He added that 21 cannabis farmlands were destroyed during the year, which he said represented 323 acres with an estimated 1,550.4 tons of destroyed stems of cannabis sativa.

    His words: “A total of 210 suspects were arrested -131 men, 16 women, 53 counseled and 10 being rehabilitated. About 35 persons were convicted within the year.

    “Eleven vehicles and seven motorcycles were seized. These include four trucks, five cars and two lorries”.
