‘Fresh PDP’ faction sets up parallel NWC

A splinter group within the ‘Fresh PDP’ announced yesterday that it has set up a National Working Committee (NWC) to run its affairs.

The ‘Fresh PDP’ is a recalcitrant group comprising a few individuals in the mainstream Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The group is protesting the outcome of the December 9 national convention of the PDP, where a new set of national officials emerged.

Another faction of the ‘New PDP’ had, a few days ago, announced a return to the mainstream PDP.

Addressing reporters in Abuja, the splinter group also announced plans to embark on membership drive nationwide, saying that its membership registration would be done electronically.

The Interim National Chairman of the splinter group, Obi-Nwosu Emmanuel, said he would organise an elective national convention after its membership registration.

Obi-Nwosu said his group was ready to work with the Coalition for Nigeria, unveiled by former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Wednesday.

He said: “The NWC is expected to liaise with all the 37 state caretaker chairmen to ensure the immediate commencement of electronic membership registration so as to provide an authentic register for the elective national convention.

“We need a clear cut action that will show us as a rebranded party; devoid of all the negativities which Chief Obasanjo very rightly captured in his last letter.

“There is no doubt that Nigerians will very much prefer PDP to APC in 2019, but that PDP will certainly not be the same old PDP, which is fraught with impunity and imposition.”

The group is protesting the outcome of the December 9, 2017 national convention of the PDP where a new set of national officials emerged.

The Interim National Chairman of the splinter group, Obi-Nwosu Emmanuel, who addressed the media, said his faction of the “Fresh PDP” would organise an elective national convention after its membership registration.

Obi-Nwosu said his group was ready to work with the Coalition for Nigeria, unveiled by former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Wednesday.

According to him, the group will certainly turn out to be the “much needed pivot” for the proposed coalition.

“The NWC is expected to liaise with ‎all the 37 state caretaker chairmen to ensure the immediate commencement of electronic membership registration so as to provide an authentic register for the elective national convention.

“We need a clear cut ‎action that will show us as a rebranded party; devoid of all the negativities which Chief Obasanjo very rightly captured in his last letter.

“Time is running out on our dear party and we must rise without further delay to make the best of the little time left. There is no doubt that Nigerians will very much prefer PDP to APC in 2019, but that PDP will certainly not be the same old PDP, which is fraught with impunity and imposition,” he said.

Stating that the newly appointed NWC members would be inaugurated soon, Obi-Nwosu said those who announced the collapse of the “Fresh PDP” into the mainstream PDP compromised.

‘Fresh PDP’ dissolves self, embraces Secondus-led PDP

Members of the ‘Fresh PDP’ on Saturday willingly dissolved the group after a marathon meeting with some chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Led by Chief Olukayode Akindele, the group agreed to drop its decision to create a breakaway faction of the opposition party and pledged loyalty to the Uche Secondus-led PDP.

The decision was reached after a peace meeting held at the Abuja residence of a former National Chairman of the PDP, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, in Abuja.

Notable among those present at the meeting were a member of the party’s Board of Trustees (BoT), Senator Stella Omu and the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Kola Ologbodiyan.

Besides Akindele, other members of the Fresh PDP at the meeting were Duru Ihuoma and Franklyne Edederan who lost out at the party’s December 9 convention.

The Fresh PDP had, mid-December, opened its parallel secretariat PDP in Abuja to register its dissatisfaction with the outcome of the convention.

The group has also renounced its plans to inaugurate a separate National Executive Committee on Monday, January 22.

Speaking after the meeting, Nwodo disclosed that the reconciliatory process enjoyed the backing of the national leadership of the party and the BoT.

According to him, no conditions were given by the group for agreeing to dissolve itself, stressing that members were enthusiastic youths that would be useful to the PDP in the 2019 elections.

Also speaking after the meeting, Ologbondiyan declared that the group’s grievances had been addressed and that the PDP remained united across the country and in the diaspora.

Nwodo described the disbandment of the group as the best gift the PDP can give to Nigerians, saying, “A lot of people thought our house was divided and was about to cascade down.

“But we want to assure you that by God’s mercy, an internal reconciliation capacity of the PDP, the cracks that you noticed have been completely sealed off”.

The ex-party chairman stated that the PDP will displace the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2019, adding that the government has proven to be insensitive to the feelings of Nigerians.

He noted that the administration has failed in its duty of protecting the lives of the citizenry and therefore has no business being in government.

Nwodo said, “Today, by what has happened here, we are sending a powerful signal across the country that the PDP wants to assure all Nigerians that we will not disappoint you.”

“The members of the Fresh PDP that is now disbanded are young vibrant politicians. If a leader is leading, and nobody is following, he is taking a walk. PDP is leading and mentoring the young ones to take over.

“The wish of a father is that his offspring will be bigger than him. If a father does not bring an offspring that will surpass him, he is not a good father. It means he doesn’t want his future to be better than his past”.

Erstwhile chairman of Fresh PDP, Chief Olukayode Akindele, stated that his members were forced to breakaway owing to what he described as acts of impunity in the party.

Akindele said, “But the issue of impunity and imposition had forced us into this situation because in PDP we don’t have any mechanism to address it.

We have a mechanism for reconciliation. Reconciliation is when you have a dispute.

“But when a criminal political act is committed, then what you need is restitution. But we have received assurances from our leaders here that this will be addressed and today while it marks the end of Fresh PDP, it brings a PDP that is caring and wants to address issues that may affect it in the primaries.

“We have been having these meetings for a long time. An executive meeting was held at 5am today (yesterday) in the interest of the nation and the party so that we won’t have a parallel NWC come Monday.

“That has been cancelled and we have surrendered the list to our leader here and we want to assure that this is the best thing that can happen to PDP”.

PDP to sanction promoters of ‘Fresh PDP’, says spokesman

PROMOTERS of “Fresh PDP” and others with similar inclinations will be made to face sanctions should they continue to create disaffection and disunity within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

PDP National Publicity Secretary Kola Ologbondiyan said such recalcitrant members would be made to face the consequences of their actions in line with the party’s constitution.

Some members  – about six of them – on Wednesday claimed to have formed a splinter group of “Fresh PDP” in protest against what it described as irregularities in the conduct of the December 9 national convention.

Ologbondiyan said: “Any person who for any selfish reasons resort to the ignoble path of attempting to create disaffection and disunity in our party will be made to face the consequences of his or her actions as provided for in the constitution and extant laws of the land.

“It is strange, unacceptable and outside every known law and regulation that a group of individuals will come together and claim to have formed a splinter group of our great party and even attempt to use our colour, name and logo unauthorised.

“It is therefore imperative to inform all our members that our party is one, indivisible and united PDP and that all organs of the party; the National Executive Committee (NEC), the Board of Trustees (BOT) as well as our state organs are all intact, thus foreclosing any basis for any form of factionalisation whatsoever. A word, they say, is enough for the wise!”.

Also yesterday, the caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party ( PDP ) in the House of Representatives and former People’s Democratic Party (PDP) national spokesman Prince Dayo have described those behind the formation of a new faction of the party as “impostors”.

The House caucus, in a statement yesterday by the Deputy Minority Leader, Chukwuka Onyema, said it will never recognise or interact with the new faction, while calling for the investigation of  the activities of those behind it by security agencies.

Adeyeye expressed dismay with the latest factional crisis rocking the umbrella party.

He said the defunct National Caretaker Committee (NCC) handed over a “highly united party” to the new National Working Committee (NWC) led by Prince Uche Secondus.

He said it will be a “big disappointment” if gladiators in the party start another factional crisis expressing confidence that rift will be resolved very soon.

Adeyeye spoke with reporters in Ado-Ekiti after he was welcomed back to his home state by thousands of his supporters after completing his national assignment in the party.

    ‘Fresh PDP’ emerges in Abuja

A handful of aggrieved members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) yesterday   staged a protest in Abuja to express disaffection with the outcome of the just concluded national convention of the party.

Led by one Emmanuel Nwosu, members of the group, numbering about six, threatened to form a splinter PDP group, saying they were out to reform the party.

The group, which called itself Fresh PDP, declared that the newly elected National Working Committe (NWC) chaired by Prince Uche Secondus would not stand. It threatened to open its secretariat in Abuja.

A controversial governor in one of the states in the Southeast is fingered to have sponsored the uncoordinated group, a claim that Nwosu denied.

But the leadership of the PDP dismissed the group as inconsequential, saying  it’s completely unperturbed by what it described as the comical act of some individuals who make outlandish claims in the media regarding party.

A statement by the National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Kola Ologbondiyan  expressed satisfaction with efforts of the Governor Seriake Dickson-led reconciliation committee, “as well as the responses from all the respectable and responsible leaders of our party in that regard”.

Ologbondiyan continued: “We will however not be responsible or respond to any person or groups of individuals who decide to allow themselves to be used by forces from another political party in a laughable and childish attempt to distract us

“The PDP under the Prince Uche Secondus-led national leadership will continue to focus on repositioning our great party to be the formidable opposition that will guarantee checks and balances in our polity and ultimately regain power in 2019”.
