    Provost warns freshers against indiscipline, cultism

    Fresh students of the Federal College of Education in Eha-Amufu, Enugu State, have been warned against getting involved in cultism and examination malpractice. The Provost, Prof Benjamin Mbah, said the Anti-corruption Vanguard established in the college by  the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) is empowered to check indiscipline in the college.

    Prof Mbah spoke at the college’s 2016/2017 matriculation, where 1,000 students took the oath. He said any student caught for indiscipline by the anti-corruption body would be punished severely. He also advised the students to study hard, noting that the college would not condone examination malpractice. He said Exam Ethics Marshal set up by management would be fully involved in the supervision of examinations.

    Prof Mbah said: “I am pleased to let you know that ICPC has set up Students’ Anti-corruption Vanguard in this college to wage war against corrupt practices. The college also set up Exam Ethics Marshal that will monitor the conduct of examinations. I, therefore, warn you against cheating in examination or bribing any lecturer to pass. Be mindful of the college rules and regulations. Severe penalty awaits anyone who breaches the school rules.”

    The provost said the college gave priority to academic excellence, good character and entrepreneurial skills. He said the students made a wise decision to have chosen the college to pursue their career in education, advising them to prepare for the challenges.

    According to him, the award of National Certificate in Education (NCE) does not come without hard work and perseverance. He advised the freshers to hope for success if they were ready to study hard.

    Prof Mbah assured the students that the college would create enabling environment to aid their learning. He added that management had provided more blocks of classroom, offices and equipped Information and Communication Technology (ICT) centre to help the students in research.

    The college, Prof Mbah said, places premium on ICT knowledge, adding that both staff and the students were expected to be ICT-compliant as he urged the freshers to embrace it.

    A parent, Ozor Ezike, from Uzo-Uwani Local Government Area, called on the Federal Government to upgrade the college to degree-awarding institution, pointing out that the college possessed the facility and manpower to be a university.

    A physically-challenged girl, Blessing Ani, admitted into the Department of Biology and Computer, promised to give in her best, saying she would not allow her condition to stop her from realising her dream. She praised the management for finding her worthy of admission, vowing she won’t disappoint her parents’ confidence.

  • Freshers screened as poly resumes

    The Delta State Polytechnic in Ogwashi-Uku has resumed for a new session. Already, screening has begun, with prospective students moving in and out of the campus for the exercise.

    Some freshers have been offered admission, but the resumption date for returning students has not been announced.

    A lecturer at the Department of Mass Communication, Eric Orukamayan, told CAMPUSLIFE ON telephone returning students would resume later this month. He added that names of all admitted students would be released before the end of the month.

    Orukamayan advised the freshers to take their studies seriously and justify their parents’ confidence. He urged them not to fritter away the opportunities offered by their admission.

    President of Change Makers Forum in Ogwashi-Uku, Feyi Kareem, also advised freshers to face their studies and regularly go to the library to improve their knowledge. He urged them to be mindful of company they keep, saying: “If you take your studies seriously and make lecturers your best friends, they will inspire your lives.”

    Kareem added: “Most students don’t succeed, because they fail to listen to their lecturers. It is important to note that for every successful student, there is an intellectual behind his success. The base and foundation of every successful student is rooted in the foundation laid by his lecturer.”

    Faith Umeh, who was admitted to study Mass Communication, promised to be of good behavior and worthy ambassadors of the school.

  • Fresher wins poly pageant

    Friends and well-wishers could not hold their joy last week when Rosemary Ishiguzor, a ND 1 student of Office Technology at the Federal Polytechnic, Ado Ekiti, was declared the 2013 Miss Campus. She defeated other six contestants to emerge as winner of the pageant.

    The event, which was the grand finale of the week-long Ladies Week, was held at the school’s Multipurpose Hall.

    Highlights of the programme included music performances by various upcoming campus artistes.

    Speaking to CAMPUSLIFE after the event, Rosemary said that she was surprised to emerge as winner, saying that she was intimidated by other contestants. She said: ‘’I am very happy to win the coveted crown as the most beautiful girl on this campus. I promise to use my platform to promote humanitarian causes and add value to the life of students.’’

    The Director of Socials of the Students’ Union Government (SUG), Gbenga Akomolafe, thanked members of the organising committe for the success of the event.

  • Fresher wins marathon

    A 400-Level Law student of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Abimbola Amusan, has organised a marathon for female students of the Faculty of Law.

    The race, which had 12 contestants, started at Anglomoz and ended at the Sports Centre.

    Our correspondent gathered that the initiative was targeted at making female students fit. Khadijat Ogunremi, 100-Level Law, won the race.

    During the freshers’ orientation, Khadijat was given a cash prize of N5,000, a plaque and a customised t-shirt with a magazine.

    Esther Ansa, who came second, was given a plaque, t-shirt and a magazine. The third placed contestant got a plaque and a motivational magazine.

    Other contestants were awarded certificates of merit.

    Abimbola thanked God for the success of the event, expressing joy that there was no causality. He also appreciated the Law Student Society (LSS) for its support.

     

  • Fresher wins Miss Coal City pageant

    A 100-Level Accountancy student of Enugu State University of Technology (ESUTECH), Miss Cynthia Oduah, has won the 2012 edition of Miss Coal City beauty pageant. Cynthia beat 14 other contestants, who came from 24 universities across Nigeria.

    She received the star prize of a 2011 Nissan Primera. The prize was presented in Enugu last Saturday at Villa Toskana Hotels.

    An elated Cynthia told CAMPUSLIFE that the event was her first participation in a beauty contest, adding that she did not know would win the pageant despite the experience of other contestants. She encouraged youth to hone their talents, saying “there is a princess in every African woman.”

    She said: “Although, I had wanted to be a model from my childhood days I did not want to participate in the Miss Coal City pageant. However, my sister, who was sick when the audition began, encouraged me to participate.”

    Cynthia pledged to make good use of her office with the assistance of the Enugu State government to establish an agency that will encourage social entrepreneurship among the youth. “I will try toNigerian university system; I will promote modesty and hard work that will make students to have confidence in their ability,” Oduah said.

    Presenting a cash prize of N100,000 to the first runner-up, Miss Imomon Augustine, the Senior Special Adviser to the Enugu State Governor on Media and Communications, Mr Afam Okereke, called on private firms to invest in show business to promote African culture and tourism, which he said would result to direct foreign investment.

    Afam reiterated the efforts of the government to make Enugu State the destination for culture and tourism by developing, harnessing and promoting the nine tourist sites in the state through corporate partnership.

    The Chief Executive Officer of Miss Coal City Limited, Darlington Aijero, said the pageant was a platform that promoted the heritage of the state as well as entrepreneurship among undergraduates.
