Popular music producer, Aiyeobasan Tosin Elijah known as Frettic in the music industry has said that the process of creating gospel music in Nigeria has changed over the years because musicians now focus more on the melody than the lyrics.
Frettic noted that while gospel songs were heavily laced with Bible verses back in the day, the new generation artistes is more interested in the melody than the message their songs are meant to convey.
The CEO of T-Fretque Productions said this while discussing the evolving nature of gospel music production, pointing out that while melody has taken precedence over lyrics in recent years, producers continue to incorporate elements from various genres to enhance the overall sound.

He said: “Unfortunately, melody has overtaken lyrics. Hitherto, gospel songs were heavily laced with Bible verses; these days, the melody is what sells more.”
Comparing the successes of gospel and secular music industries in Nigeria, Frettic observed that each has its unique challenges and definitions of success.
“Success is relative. Gospel music is becoming a great pathway leading people to Christ—this is success for the genre, whereas secular music has become more lucrative for its musicians than ever – this is success for that genre as well,” he said.
