  • Sales reps face N15m fraud charge

    Two sales representatives, Kate Onyemaechi and Patrick Abu, who allegedly stole N15 million from their employer, were on Tuesday brought before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Onyemaechi, 23 and Abu, 26, are standing trial on a two-count carge of conspiracy and stealing before Magistrate M. O. Ope-Agbe.

    Prosecuting Sergeant Friday Mameh alleged that the duo committed the offeņces at No. 41, Udeco Medical Road, Chevy View Estate, Lekki, Lagos, between September 2018 and February 2019, at about 7am.

    He said the defendants stole N15 million belonging to the complainant, Mac-Bena Supermarket and Pharmacy Ltd.

    According to the prosecutor, the defendants sold some items from the shop but did not remit the money to the complainant’s account.

    Mameh added that the offences contravened Sections 287 (7) and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The duo pleaded not guilty.

    Magistrate Ope-Agbe granted each defendant N7 million bail with one surety in the like sum, among other conditions.

    The case continues on March 5.

    Police arraigns herbalist for duping man of N190m to cure diabetes

    The Police Force Intelligence Bureau ( FIB ) Force Headquaters Annex, Lagos has arraigned a man, Adeniyi Adewunmi, who allegedly obtaining N190million from a businessman to cure his diabetes, asthma and spiritual attack.

    Adewunmi, 43, of Ajao Estate, Oshodi, is standing trial before Chief Magistrate F.O. Botoku on a four-count charge of conspiracy, fraud and stealing.

    According to Prosecuting Sergeant Friday Mameh, the defendant and his alleged accomplices committed the offences between February 2016 and January this year, at Ajao Estate.

    Mameh said: “The defendant and others still at large approached the complainant, Mr Lawrence Akanbi, and told him he was suffering from diabetes, asthma and spiritual attack.

    “The complainant believed them because those were the ailments he was suffering from. 

    “The defendants then persuaded the complainant that they could cure his ailments with herbs for a fee.”

    According to the prosecutor, Akanbi was persuaded to begin giving them money for bogus treatments. 

    The treatments became more and more expensive and continued for several months with Akanbi having to travel to Ekiti to make some of the payments. 

    They eventually obtained a total of N190m, yet the complainant’s condition did not improve. 

    When they sensed that the complainant was becoming suspicious, the defendant and his accomplices disappeared. 

    Sometime last week, the defendant returned to the complainant to request for more money, but Akanbi grabbed him and raised the alarm following which the police was called.

    The claimant was absent in court yesterday. 

    Mameh told the court that the offences contravened Sections 287, 314 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.

    The defendant pleaded not guilty.

    Chief Magistrate Botoku granted him N20 million bail with two sureties in the like sum.

    She remanded Adewunmi in prison custody pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions. 

    The case continues on February 12.

    Hip-hop artiste docked for incurring over hotel bills

    A self-acclaimed hip-hop musician, ‎Olaoluwa Owolabi, who allegedly incurred hotel bills totalling N92,800 was on Monday brought before an Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

    Owolabi, 29, of No. 2 Adetoyin Street, Ajah, was arraigned on a two-count charge before Mr. B. I. Bakare.

    Prosecuting police officer, Sgt. Friday Mameh, said the defendant committed the offence between August 1 and September 5, 2017 at two hotels in Lagos.

    He said Owolabi claimed to be on the record label of 234 Fusion and had 20 tracks.

    Mameh alleged that on August 1 at Diamond View Hotel, Chevron Roundabout, Lekki, Owolabi bought drinks, food and received other services totalling N13, 600, but refused not pay his bills.

    Similarly, at about 9:00 a.m. on September 5, at Strait Haven Hotel, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, the accused incurred bills totalling N79,200 and failed to pay the bills.

    According to the prosecutor, the offences contravene Section 313(a) of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, ‎2015 and punishable under same.

    Owolabi pleaded not guilty to the charges.

    Magistrate Bakare granted the accused bail in the sum of N150,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    South Africa returnee jailed for fraud

    An Igbosere Magistrates Court, Lagos, last Friday, sentenced a South Africa returnee, Valentine Thomas, to one year imprisonment for defrauding an Uber taxi driver of N30,000.

    Magistrate A. A. Adetunji, however, gave the convict an option of returning the N30,000 and spending only nine months in prison.

    Thomas, 28, of no fixed address, was arraigned on November 30, 2016 on a one count charge of theft contrary to Section 313 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.

    He pleaded not guilty to the charge but was convicted after seven months of trial.

    Prosecuting police officer, Sergeant Friday Mameh, told the court that Thomas on November 28 last year at about 1:17 p.m. hired an Uber cab at Lekki to take him around Eti-Osa local government area of the state.

    They agreed on a fee of N30,000 for a ride of between 1:17 p..m and midnight.

    “Thomas told the driver, Adeboye Mayowa, that he was a South Africa returnee and was looking for a hotel to lodge.

    “Along the way, he ordered the driver, to stop at a hotel at Oniru and ordered for food at the restaurant.

    “He also invited two girls to join him, but failed to pay for the meals,” Mameh told the court.

  • Man bags three years imprisonment for stealing

    An Igbosere Magistrates’ Court in Lagos, on Friday sentenced a 32-year-old man, Mohammed Useni, to three years imprisonment for stealing  FCMB Plc’s property worth N500, 000.

    The Magistrate, Mr B. A. Sonuga, sentenced Useni  without an option of fine after he pleaded guilty to a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

    “Upon the plea of guilty, the confessional statement of the accused and the facts adduced by this court, the accused is guilty as charged.

    “He is hereby sentenced to one year imprisonment on count one and two years imprisonment on count two,” she said.

    Sonuga held that the sentence would take effect from April 21.

    Earlier, the prosecutor, Sgt. Friday Mameh had told the court that the accused committed the offences with two others still at large on April 19, at No. 1, Ligali Ayorinde St., Victoria Island Lagos.

    He said a security guard reported the matter at Maroko police station after he apprehended the accused when he was leaving the premises with the stolen items.

    “They stole three air conditioners valued at N300, 000 and some cable worth N200, 000,’’ he said.

    Mameh tendered the statement of the accused and the bond showing the release of exhibits to the court,  and they were admitted in evidence.

    The accused, before his sentence, pleaded for mercy, promising not to indulge in any crime again.
