Nigeria international Brown Ideye was shut out when he featured for Greek champions Olympiacos on Saturday in a friendly match.

Olympiacos drew goalless with Asteras Tripolis.

Ideye, who joined the UEFA Champions League campaigners from EPL side West Brom this summer for an undisclosed fee, played the entire second half and showed great promise for the team, but could not get his name on the scoreboard.

The team missed several players who are on international duties.

Ideye will be hoping for a great time with Olympiacos to have chance of making a return to the Eagles.

•Nigeria’s side busy in FIFA-free windows of 2015
•France, Belguim, USA too; proposal still in the works
•Tasks agents to also search for African countries

Sportinglife can reveal today that chieftains of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) are proposing four high profile international friendlies for the Super Eagles against Colombia, France, United States of America (USA) and Belgium.

Although these proposals are still in the work, NFF men feel strongly that such high profile games which would also include top African countries eager to accept the offer would help the new Eagles helmsman to properly evaluate his team and make the desired changes.

Indeed, SportingLife scooped that NFF chiefs are eager to have the Eagles play in all the FIFA-free windows for 2015, in a bid to keep the technical crew led by Sunday Oliseh very busy.

Interestingly, discussions on the likely opponents for the Eagles are in hush tones since offers have not been made fromally to some of the countries penciled down for such  games.

Amokachi drops Udoh for Bafana Bafana friendly

The overall top goal scorer of the Nigeria Professional Football League and Enyimba FC Striker, Mfon Udoh was one of four players dropped by interim coach of Nigeria,Daniel Amokachi  ahead of Sunday’s International friendly in Mbombela.

The Federation had earlier said that only 23 players will execute the second of two friendlies it lined up for the March International window.

Nigeria lost 1-0 to Uganda in the first friendly played inside the Nest of Champions on Wednesday. Farouk Miya’s deflected shot beat Vincent Enyeama on the veterans 100th international cap.

Mfon’s exclusion would not come as a surprise, the striker who netted 23 league goals last season to help Enyimba finish as runners up of the NPFL saw bearly two minutes of game time in Uyo as he was considered fifth choice in the Eagles attack line which also boasts of English Championship club Watford forward, Odion Ighalo and 1. FC Koln’s Anthony Ujah.

The Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) tweeted the list of players selected for the South Africa clash.

It will be the  third meeting in five months; both games were AFCON qualifiers and Shakes Masahaba’s team impressed against the 2013 AFCON winners.

NFF confirms cancellation of Nigeria/Ghana friendly

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has confirmed that the much talked about friendly match between Nigeria and Ghana has been cancelled.

The proposed friendly match billed for London on March 29, was reportedly cancelled by FIFA, stating that the friendly game negates the new rule against playing two matches in three days in two different continents.

Reacting to the development, NFF General Secretary Musa Amadu confirmed the cancellation of the proposed friendly based on the new rule.

“There is a new rule that states that a team cannot play two friendly matches in two continents within a few days, if the distance between the two venues is more than five hours by air.

“However, the same does not apply if it is within the same confederation. We are therefore looking at an option of playing in Africa on the 29th after the Bolivia match in Uyo,” said the General Secretary.

Amadu also clarified that the proposed friendly match has not been agreed by the two football federations. “We merely sent a proposal which the Ghana F.A had not consented to before this development,” said Amadu.

  • Bolivia friendly good for Eagles – Pascal

Bolivia friendly good for Eagles – Pascal

Former Nigeria international, Pascal Patrick has welcomed the proposed international friendly match between the Super Eagles and their Bolivian counterparts on March 28 in Uyo.

The Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) announced on Friday, plans to play Bolivia in an international friendly on March 28 in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, and Pascal feels it should serve as a very good test and preparation for the Eagles ahead of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

“I think it is a very good one, playing Bolivia in an international friendly. The next Africa Cup of Nations starts in June and playing a game against Bolivia should help get the players together.

“Remember they have not played together since that game against South Africa, so we must start blending them in as a team before the start of the Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.

“Some new players are emerging now and this could be the perfect opportunity to get them in and see if they have what it takes to play for Nigeria,” Pascal said.

News of the friendly with Bolivia has been greeted with mixed reactions, given that the Super Eagles would be set for the African qualifiers, but Pascal believes there is no problem in playing Bolivia before the qualifiers.

“I don’t see any problem with it. We just need it to get the players together and probably try out a few new ones too.”

  • Corruption-friendly governance

In spite of former leaders’ flaws, Jonathan’s rot is worse

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo and one-time military strongman Ibrahim Babangida delivered a blow to Jonathan individually and in separate contexts, and suggested that his government scandalously encouraged corruption.

The nation’s president, Dr. Goodluck Jonathan, had ironically earlier identified corruption as one of Nigeria’s twin problems.

At a special New Year service at the Dunamis International Gospel Centre, Abuja, Jonathan had said: “There are two main problems confronting us as a nation: The issue of insecurity in the North where we have the Boko Haram terrorists and in the South where we have commercial kidnapping. The next thing that people worry about after security is the issue of corruption.”

It is noteworthy that the country has an undesirable international reputation for official corruption, and Jonathan, perhaps unwittingly, reinforced the 2014 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) of Transparency International (TI). The assessment was based on the extent of public sector corruption in 175 countries and Nigeria was ranked 136th. The country scored 27 out of a maximum 100 marks, and was listed as the 39th most corrupt nation in the world. This has happened on President Jonathan’s watch.

Against the background of this ugly picture, Babangida’s interview with the media unit of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) may be appreciated and contemplated. Babangida was quoted as saying, “I don’t have the facts but if what I read in the newspapers is currently what is happening, then I think we were angels.” It is an instructive reflection of corruption perception relating to Jonathan’s tenure. Although  Babangida headed a military regime discredited for  allegedly institutionalising corruption in Nigeria, it is a statement on the scale of corruption in the country that it could confer  sainthood on a Babangida regime that sullied the nation’s moral landscape. So terrible was the corruption and depletion of public treasury in the Babangida era that he once wondered why the nation had not collapsed.

In his own case, Obasanjo lamented: “Our nation is plagued with insecurity, economic downturn, increase in poverty, corruption and impunity in doing things.” He told visiting Southwest women leaders at his Presidential Hilltop Estate in Abeokuta, Ogun State: “Nigeria does not deserve the position it has found itself today.”  Although, on the surface, his comments had a matter-of-fact ring, it would appear that he conveniently glossed over his own contribution to the observed regrettable state of the nation, especially in his  years as a democratic president and even beyond. The truth is that the Obasanjo administration had its own condemnable dimensions of corruption and impunity.

However, in spite of the shaky platforms on which Obasanjo and Babangida made their observations about the country’s slide, and their own questionable morality in the context of governance, it must be noted that their interventions are not without a redeeming quality. At least, by their negative evaluation of the performance of the Jonathan presidency they helped to further highlight the present rot, which should be viewed as a positive role.

It is remarkable that, while pinpointing the problems of insecurity and corruption, Jonathan boasted: “We are coming out with programmes and plans to clean up. These are things you just don’t use a magical wand to wave off; otherwise even before I became President, there wouldn’t have been corruption in Nigeria.”

The disturbing implication of his reasoning is that the country has been a victim of a chain of corruption-friendly governments. Jonathan should be told that words are not enough. His track record offers little hope to a country in dire need of correction. He has been in the saddle for about six years, and if he had no plans for corruption since, how can he boast one now?

Dream Team to play Wikki in friendly tie in Bauchi Dec 11

Chief Coach of the Nation’s U-23 team, Samson Siasia has urged soccer loving Nigerians to assist him in moulding a team that would be able to qualify for all the tournaments they have entered to play.

In a chat with SportingLife in Abuja shortly after paying a condolence visit to Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) Abuja Chapter who lost a vibrant member Ramsey Ugele solicited for Nigerians support to lead the team to successes.

“It is beg that I am begging every Nigerian especially, you the press guys. You must support us to succeed so that we avoid what happened with the Super Eagles that failed to qualify for next year’s Nations Cup.

“We are not resting at all in searching for the right kind of players. We will not rest until we see the players we are looking for. And I can tell you that we have made serious progress and by the time the elimination begins we should have gotten the best players,” he said.

The Dream Team V1 have been engaged in series of friendly matches with some Abuja based football clubs and have so far won all the matches. The team would be taking on newly promoted club to the Nigeria Premier League, Wikki Tourist of Bauchi in yet another friendly match in Bauchi in December 11, 2014.

Samson Siasia will be hoping to repeat the feat he achieved when he led the then Nation’s U-23 team to winning silver at the football event of the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008. Before then he led the Nation’s U-20 team to winning silver at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in the Netherlands.

Dream Team have been undergoing screening of players in Abuja ahead of the 2015 All Africa Games and the 2016 Olympic Games in Brazil.

  • Super Eagles friendly in pipeline

    Super Eagles friendly in pipeline

Acting Vice President of the Nigeria football federation, Shehu Adamu has hinted that the Super Eagles might play a friendly before the September 7 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Rwanda.

There is a FIFA international window on August 13,and Adamu says the Super Eagles might utilize that date to play a friendly.

“We are working towards ensuring we possibly play a friendly before the 2015 AFCON qualifier against Rwanda. As far as matches are concerned, the qualifiers are of utmost importance but if we can get a game before then, fine” he told SL10.

The Super Eagles also have Sudan and South Africa in their qualifying group for Morocco 2015, but are presently without a coach after Stephen Keshi’s contract expired in July.

It is also very doubtful if they will get the full complement of their star players as that date falls very close to when the major leagues in Europe will commence, while some other leagues may already have commenced.

But Adamu continues by saying they will pull every stop to ensure Nigeria has a successful qualifying campaign.

“It is important to have good preparation and that is what we hope to do. We have to qualify for the AFCON and everything humanly possible will be done for our preparation” he added.

The Super Eagles won the AFCON for the third time in South Africa last year, when they beat Burkina Faso 1-0 in the final through a Sunday Mba goal.

PRE-SEASON FRIENDLY: Mikel turns spectator in Holland

    • Chelsea hit  Vitesse 3-1

Super Eagles and Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel watched from the sidelines as the premiership  side currently on pre-season tour demolished Dutch side Vitesse Arnhem 3-1 yesterday.

Mikel was pictured along side returnee talisman, Didier Drogba on the bench watching proceedings as teammates Salah, Fabregas and Matic hit target for an elated Jose Mourinho.

The Dutch side could not find the net until late in the match when Djurdjevic found  space in the box to head past Beeney.

The position of Mikel who was part of Stephen Keshi’s squad to the World Cup in Brazil has become talking point in sports circles with some pundits insiting that his level of fitness and effectiveness has taken a drive.  Unlike  some World Cup players who immediately on return became hot cake for some suitors seeking to streghten their squad ahead of new season, the suitors refused to show face for the Nigerian with some insisting that he did not do well enough to attract suitors during the World Wup in which the Eagles crashed in the round of 16.
