  • FrieslandCampina WAMCO, paediatricians champion children’s nutrition campaign

    As part of its community service that marks Nigeria’s 58th Independence celebration, Nigeria’s leading dairy company, FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria PLC partnered with Ask the Paediatricians (ATP) Foundation to deliver nutrition assessment and support for over 5,000 children and their parents across Lagos, Kwara, Abuja and Abeokuta from September 29 to October 1, 2018.

    Supported by Peak 456 growing-up milk, the social responsibility initiative had a team of doctors led by Dr. Gbemisola Boyede of the ATP Foundation, did nutrition assessments using growth charts, milk sampling and gave health talks. FrieslandCampina WAMCO’s specialised nutrition staff volunteers also participated.

    Boyede, a consultant paediatrician at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idiaraba Lagos started Ask the Pediatricians (ATP) Foundation as a group on Facebook on July 20, 2015. ATP now has four major areas of focus namely, Health Education Online Forum, Community Medical Outreaches, Health Seminars and Workshops, and Support for Orphans and Vulnerable Children.

    FrieslandCampina WAMCO is renowned for its mission to nourish Nigerians with quality dairy nutrition. According to Zatur Hassim, Head, Specialized Nutrition, “This is what drives our business and motivates our people. These outreaches were deployed not just to conduct health checks on children but also to teach parents how to identify nutrition deficiencies and mitigate their prevalence.

    “In honour of Nigeria’s 58th Independence celebration, we are once again demonstrating our corporate citizenship of the world through this programme that supports reduction in hunger, promotes well-being and partnerships for development, all of which demonstrate the United Nations sustainable development goals 1, 2 & 17,” said Hassim.

  • Fire at WAMCO factory in Lagos

    The condensed factory of FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria Plc in Ogba Industrial Estate, Ikeja, Lagos, was razed by fire on Friday.

    However, the fire was promptly put out by Lagos State Fire Service supported by the company safety team and neighbours.

    No casualty was recorded in the incident.

    The company’s Corporate Affairs Director, Mrs. Ore Famurewa, in a statement said “the fire outbreak, which occurred at 1:10 p.m. was contained by 1:55 p.m. The fire was caused by electrical malfunction in the conveyor section.”

    “We commend our employees for showing high commitment and safety leadership in organizing themselves during the fire. In all this, FrieslandCampina WAMCO operations were not disrupted by the incident. As always, we ensure the safety and security of our employees as high priority.”

    She thanked the Lagos State Fire Service, FrieslandCampina WAMCO Safety Team, the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN) fire team and other corporate organisations like Guinness Nigeria Plc for their rapid response to the emergency situation.

    “We thank all our stakeholders for their show of concern,” Famurewa said, adding that as the leading producer of dairy products in Nigeria, FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria was strongly poised to satisfy its teeming consumers.

    “As a good corporate citizen, the company assures its stakeholders that it shall continue to manufacture at the highest standards to nourish Nigerians with quality dairy nutrition.”

    Nigeria Safety Awards for Excellence Hall of Fame (9jaSAFE) 2016 is set to award companies who have created a safe workplace for its employees.

    The Award, which will take place on 9th of September, 2016 at the Lagos Oriental Hotel, Lekki-Lagos is going to be hosted by Ace Comedian, Seyi Law.

    9jaSAFE Award organized by Safety Record Newspaper, publishers of Nigeria’s premiere Occupational Health, Safety and Environment newspaper, is a safety awards event aims at recognizing outstanding health, safety and environment (HSE) initiatives in Nigeria.

    The award ceremony, in its 2nd year, is not only focused on recognizing Nigerian organizations who have created a safe workplace environment for her workers, but also to highlight Nigerians who continue to promote safety within their immediate communities in Nigeria.

    According to a statement signed by Femi Da-silva, Managing Editor of Safety Record Newspapers, he said that the event is organized to honour organizations and individuals who have achieved excellence in their field by the introduction, development and improvement of health and safety standards within their work environment and communities.

    The statement reads: “The award, which have been endorsed by the Institute of Safety Professionals of Nigeria, Lagos State Safety Commission, and World Safety Organisation; others who endorsed the awards event are the Society of Occupational and Environmental Heath Physicians of Nigeria, American Society of Safety Engineers-Nigeria Chapter.

    “Supporting the award event for this year are Ikeja City Mall, Hybrid Group and Kevron Consulting Ltd.”

    Da-silva noted that they have instituted Nigeria Safety Award for Excellence as a humble contribution to advance the culture of safety in Nigeria, noting that several incidents that have resulted in disasters, including mishaps have become a common occurrence in the country, claiming the lives of many and destroying properties worth billions of Naira.

    According to him: “We have had trends of building collapse during and after constructions, ghastly motor accidents on our highways and waterways, and fire outbreaks across the states killing hundreds of people.

    “A passenger boat capsized in the waters around cross river state, killing about a hundred people. And on April 2 in Majidun River, Ikorodu in Lagos, a passenger boat hit a solid object in the water, upturning and throwing all its 28 commuters into the sea. The victims included some pregnant women and a Young couple whose wedding were just a few days away.

    “At different times, there have been reported cases of collapsed – completed or under constructed buildings, some of which had a high number of occupants when they caved in. The Lekki gardens building collapse in Lagos is the most recent.

    “In the case of fire, hundreds of lives have been killed and properties worth billions damaged over the last few years. Quite recently, about 70 people died in the Onitsha tanker fire that occurred after the fuel laden truck lost control as a result of brake failure. This perhaps could have been prevented, had the vehicle undergo necessary checks to ensure safety.

    “The consequence of the countless dangers complied above is the near absence of safety standards in most areas of public exposure in Nigeria today.”

    He revealed that Safety Record Newspaper has been in the vanguard of raising awareness and sensitization on safety matters in the country, hence, taking the lead in berthing the award in its second year running.

    This initiative has been adjudged by stakeholders in the country as the first recognized Nigeria award in Occupational health, safety and environment (HSE).

    “The award is open to any individual/organization committed to practicing health, safety and environment (HSE) managing at the workplace in Nigeria.

    “The award is an invaluable platform set up to endorse organization/individuals’ HSE practice and a means to celebrate success in keeping employee healthy and safe,” he informed.

    He added that the independent safety body would recognize outstanding performance initiatives of individuals towards fostering safety and environment initiative.

    The list of the finalists have been published on their website, and would be published in the second edition of the first ever Nigeria Safety Book of Record, which will be updated annually.

    According to the organizers of the award, they said that interested safety professionals in Nigeria can participate in the event by visiting the website.

  • WAMCO chief urges good nutrition for kids’ brain devt

    FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria Plc has stressed the need for proper nutrition for children, especially in the first five years,  to facilitate their brain development.

    Its Managing Director,  Mr. Rahul Colaco who spoke during the firm’s 10th Annual Nutrition Seminar with Physical growth and brain development of the Nigerian child: The challenge of our time as its theme reiterated the company’s commitment to nourishing Nigeria with quality dairy nutrition; part of which includes providing adequate up to date researched information on child nutrition.

    Hesaid: “FrieslandCampina invests huge funds in research and development of quality and affordable products to cater for the various needs of the consumer. So we are confident of our support to healthcare practitioners in ensuring proper child nutrition.”

    Declaring the forum open,  wife of Lagos State Governor, Mrs. Bolanle Ambode, said lack of awareness by mothers on what adequate nutrition is and the significance of nutrition in the first five years of a child’s life.

    She urged healthcare practitioners to “use the opportunity of the Nutrition Seminar organised by FrieslandCampina WAMCO Nigeria to fashion out new strategies, and new perspectives alongside the sharing of current knowledge on ways to improve the nutritional well-begin of the Nigerian child.”

    Renowned Professor of Pediatrics and President Pediatrics Association of Nigeria, Adebiyi Olowu; and Dr Anne Schaafsma, Senior Scientist, Global Nutrition Development, FrieslandCampina Innovation Centre, The Netherlands were lead speakers on the occasion.

    Research papers on the importance of nutrition for the optimum brain development of a child were presented. According to them, brain development and the mental health of a child are essential and should never be neglected.

    The first five years of development of a child is crucial and represents the period the child significantly needs essential nutrients that support overall brain development, especially docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), the submitted.

    The speakers noted that children whose diet lack important fatty acids such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) have been found to be at risk of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, unipolar depression and aggressive hostility. When infants are fed with  the appropriate food essentials, they become smarter, faster and happier.
