    Expectant mother, two others die in Ibadan-Ife road auto crash

    Ibadan-Ife road yesterday as no fewer than three people including an expectant mother dead yesterday in a ghastly motor accident on Ibadan-Ife road.

    Six others sustained injuries.

    The Nation gathered  that the accident which involved three vehicles, occurred in the morning at New Iyana Agbala junction in Egbeda Local Government.

    Confirming the incident, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Egbeda Unit Commander, Mr. Abiodun Akinlade, said the victims died instantly.

    He described the accident as multiple,  with the particulars of the vehicles involved as Micra Saloon car with registration number YNF 963 AA, Toyota Siena, registration number XD 451 KAK and Volkswagen FST 452 BH.

    He said the long vehicle that caused the accident refused to wait.

    Akinlade stated that the expectant mother was about crossing the road when she was hit by one of the vehicles.

    Truck kills two pupils

    Two pupils of a private primary school in Ikirun, Osun State, were killed yesterday by a truck.

    It was learnt that the victims are siblings. They were returning from school when the incident occurred.

    Ikirun Unit Commandant of the Federal Roads Safety Corps (FRSC) Mr. Gabriel Esan said the tank the truck was conveying fell on the pupils, who were waiting for their school bus.

    Esan said one of them died on the spot and the other in the hospital.

    The truck has been impounded.

    Esan warned drivers against speeding and over loading.

    FRSC goes tough on reckless driving

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Anambra State is going tough on motorists, who drive recklessly and overload their vehicles. It said offenders would be arrested and prosecuted in special courts set up by the agency.

    The Sector Commander Hygenius Omeje spoke yesterday in Awka during the Road Safety 2014 Rally with the theme: “Say no to overloading and reckless driving”.

    He said FRSC would establish more mobile courts.

    Omeje said overloading and reckless driving were responsible for accidents on the highways, especially on the Owerri-Onitsha and Onitsha-Enugu expressways.

    According to him, mega rallies would be held in Awka, Nnewi, Onitsha and other towns and cities and they would be rounded off on Sunday with a service at The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), Okpuno.

    During the rally yesterday, fliers were given to motorists. An FRSC source said the agency would visit parks, markets and major roads to sensitise the people.

     

  • FRSC enlightens pupils on safety

    A unit of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has stressed the need for pupils to have basic safety awareness to stay out of danger while walking or inside vehicles.

    At a safety programme, which took place at the Nigeria Armed Forces Resettlement Centre  (NAFRC), Oshodi, Lagos, for primary and secondary pupils, the Unit Commander, Mr Samuel Ogundayo, said the training was aimed at building capacity, knowledge and skills, particularly on the use of Zebra crossing.

    He said the unit, as part of its corporate social responsibility, decided to bring road safety closer home by taking pupils to task on the tips to stay alive while on the roads.

    According to Ogundayo, the programme, with the theme: “Keep The Child Safe” was organised in collaboration with the Golden Penny Pasta and Noodles, to educate pupils about safe road culture, and the importance of safety and security.

    The pupils were taught how to cross the highway using Zebra crossing.

    “We are here to celebrate our children, but unfortunately our joy is not complete because some of our children have been kidnapped. Many were exposed to danger and some are being killed by careless drivers. We need to protect them from harm and danger,” he said.

    He said it was important for every child to understand basic traffic rules and laws, such as road signs, markings and signals to cross the roads.

    According to him, it is also unlawful for any child below 18 years to drive any vehicle.

    He advised children “not to  cross the road in between parked vehicles’’, as it will be difficult for drivers to see them.

    Ogundayo urged the parents of under-aged children and babies to ensure that their children sit on the back seat of the car. He also warned children against having any sharp object or knife in their school bags as it might be harmful to them.

    He asked them to avoid wearing black cloths especially at night and to walk facing oncoming vehicles.

    Ogundayo advised school proprietors to ensure that school buses are road worthy, adding that FRSC will impound school buses that are not road worthy.

    The guest speaker, Miss Taiwo Amusa, advised  the pupils to be at alert before crossing the road and pay attention to road signs. “Red is stop, Amber is get ready to move and Green is start going,” he said.

    Some of the schools at the event are Muslim Junior Comprehensive School, Mushin, Honey Home Primary School, Aguda and Rodiyah Group of Schools, Mushin.

    Dignitaries at event include an official of the Lagos State Ministry of Education, Mr. Esther Ige, Mrs Vera Akerele and FRSC unit head Oshodi, Mrs Adobi Larry -Agugor.

    The Corps Marshal and Chief Executive of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Osita Chidoka, is among resource persons to present papers at this year’s edition of Saphilla 2014 in South Africa.

    A statement by the Acting Corps Public Education Officer of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) said the global event is a biennial conference for system application and products (SAP) in data processing users to connect, create and collaborate, through sharing knowledge about innovations, implementation and service delivery.

    During the three-day conference, the Corps Marshal will make a presentation on: SAP Business Intelligence in Road Management – Real Time Incident Reporting and Dashboards. This seeks to undertake a holistic overview of the inherent benefits and coloration of business intelligence techniques in system application and products as part of measures for improved service delivery in the public and private sector.

    It will also review the underlying benefits of real time collation, storage, retrieval, analysis and reportage of data on road traffic crashes towards effective road safety management.

    Chidoka’s presentation will also seek to accentuate the relevance of business intelligence on information technology applications to provide access to data to help enterprise users make better decisions through online analytical process, statistical analysis, query and reporting, forecasting and data mining.

    It also provides the capability to manage financial, asset, and cost accounting, production operations and materials, personnel, plants, and archived documents.

    Two killed in Ogun road accidents

    Two people have died in two accidents on the Abeokuta-Sagamu expressway. Six others were critically injured.

    The first accident occurred around 10:16am yesterday at Onipepeye. It involved a Mitsubishi Space Wagon marked LAGOS BDG 810 XK, coming from Lagos, and a Toyota Camry numbered LAGOS AAA 524 CW.

    The Camry, which was going towards Sagamu, was said to have skidded off the road and collided with the Space Wagon, which was going to Abeokuta. Two passengers died on the spot.

    Officials of the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC) were on the scene.

    Head of the Rescue Team of the Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE) Mr. Adeola Adekoya said one of the passengers, Mrs. Tope Akingbade, was trapped in one of the vehicles for some time.

    Adekoya attributed the crash to speeding, adding that help did not get to the victims until about an hour later.

    He said officials of the State Ambulance Service administered first aid on the victims before they were taken to the State Hospital in Ijaye, Abeokuta.

    The second crash, a lone one, also occurred in Onipepeye, about 100 meters away from the scene of the first accident. It involved a BMW X5 Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV), numbered (LAGOS) KJA 595 AY.

    One of the two occupants of the vehicle, who was critically injured, was taken to the State Hospital in Ijaye, Abeokuta.

    FRSC to enforce colour for school buses

    The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) will soon begin enforcing yellow colour on buses conveying students, the Ijebu-Ode Unit Commander of the Commission, Mr. Isa Seidu has said.

    He said the step would make other road users take necessary precautions about the vehicles conveying children, adding that the commission had directed its men to educate the public on the importance of the special colour for school buses.

    Seidu who spoke at a public enlightenment campaign organised to educate members of the National Association of Proprietors of Private Schools (NAPPS) on child safety in Ijebu Ode, said the commission had been taking the safety of the children seriously in recent times.

    He said:”The colour for school buses is glossy yellow. The colour was chosen because of its attention-grabbing nature. It gets noticed faster than any other colour. Studies indicated that humans notice yellow colour faster than other eye-catching colours. The essence of this colour is for other road users to notice the colour and slow down so as to be mindful of the children on board.”

    The chairman of NAPPS, Ijebu-Ode chapter, Mr Olanrewaju Osunjinrin, said the association had resolved to comply with the rules and regulations of the commission, adding that he would ensure that necessary efforts would be made to remind his fellow members at all time.

    Representative of the state government at the event, Mrs. Gafaru Towobola, said checking of the school buses will be included in its accreditation process, adding that the state government would partner with the commission to ensure safety of school children.

    ABC wins another award

    ABC Transport Plc has won the “Transport Company of the Year”award at the Nigerian Auto Awards in Lagos. The event was organised by On-Wheels West Africa and is in its ninth edition.

    ABC Transport won in the category of road transportation, having been nominated alongside known bus operators. The honour was bestowed on ABC Transport in recognition for its innovations and immense contributions to road transport development in Nigeria.

    Meanwhile, ABC Transport will be honouring over 200 drivers and attendants at its forthcoming Accident-free award ceremony in Owerri, Imo State. The Accident-free ceremony is a yearly event organised by ABC Transport to reward drivers and attendants who did not record any accident within a year. On that same day, ABC Drivers’ Training Academy (DTA) will be graduating no less than 250 drivers at its inaugural convocation ceremony.

    The Academy, which is certified by Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), has the mandate to train prospective drivers as well as re-train experienced drivers on defensive driving, among others.

    FRSC to punish underage cyclists

    The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Niger State will soon clamp down on underaged children riding bicycles on major roads in Minna, the state capital.

    Their activities have been hindering government’s efforts at reducing accidents.

    The Sector Commander, David Usman, in a statement at the weekend, said: “Any child found riding a bicycle on any major road within Minna will be arrested; his parents will be prosecuted and the bicycle seized.

    “The FRSC is appealing to the public for understanding and cooperation in fighting  loss of lives and property on the highways.”

    Ogun FRSC sensitises fleet operators

    The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Ogun State Command has held a workshop for fleet operators in Ogun State to address various issues associated with running of their business and the havoc recorded as a result of non-compliance to necessary directives. The state FRSC Sector commander, Mr. Micheal Adedeji in an opening address at the event, accused the fleet operators of carry out their businesses without following laid down rules.

    To ensure safety of fleet operators, Adedeji revealed that President Goodluck Jonathan has ordered the merger of all fleet operators under a new scheme christened Road Safety Standardisation Scheme (RTSSS).

    In his speech, the Divisional Police Officer of Ibara Police Station, who was represented by Mr. Kunle Sowo, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, reiterated the readiness of the police in securing lives and property of fleet operators.

    He advised representatives of fleet operators at the event to desist from leaving an accident scene without following appropriate measures.

    While speaking with The Nation, Adedeji said the need to update the skills of the fleet operators and safety managers necessitated the workshop.
