Which fruits will Southwest traditional religion day bear?

Every human thought, word and deed is a seed which bears multiples of fruits, I reminded myself last week as I remembered that  August 20 of every year in South-western Nigeria was now a traditional religion day and a public holiday as well in those six Nigerian states.

The governors of these states are no strangers to the traditional religion of their people which, literally speaking, were conquered by Christianity and Islam. Chief priests and priestesses of traditional religion had been asking these governors for several years: If the country is now liberated from the political forces which brought these religions, and if South-Western Nigeria is always pre-eminent in the battles for freedom and democracy, why should traditional religion still be in bondage?, For now, what largely constitutes the “bondage” is that Christianity and Islam are accorded official public holidays for their adherents to celebrate important festivals whereas adherents of traditional religion have had no such privilege until August 20, 2025. Besides, some states did not allow them to carry out their practices in public. Some of these practices are considered fettish and backward, trample human rights and dignity. Nevertheless, encouraged by August 20 public holiday for traditional religion, the priests and priestesses are pressing for August  21 to also be a public holiday, even if both days do not yet add up to the four a-piece enjoyed by christians and moslems. I expect another demand in future for state financing of some of their activities, to balance with subsidised pilgrimages to Saudi Arabia and Jerusalem. Beyond the  August 20, 2025 recognition and holiday, I wonder if traditional religion will now be taught in schools and if some of its fall-outs such as traditional medicine will mount higher pedestals.

As I contemplated these questions and more, I remembered I had a rare privilege of a conversation on Natural Health and traditional beliefs with Dr Abayomi Aiyesimoju. He is a neurologist and chartered homeopath, the Medical Director of Healthville on Adeniyi Jones Avenue, Lagos, a natural medicine advocate on the platform of Partnership With Nature public presentations and consultant to Forever Living Products (FLP), an American multi-level marketing company which sells Aloe vera-based nutritional supplements globally. Arguably, he brought High Colonic Irrigation medicine to Nigeria. Soon, our conversations drifted into some conceptions of health and disease in Yoruba traditional medicine which derives from the cosmic realities of these people in Nigeria’s South-Western region.

Here, as in other parts of the country, many sick or invalid persons do not limit themselves to one or two healing therapies, but to as many as they can find, trust or afford. Thus, several persons besiege allopathic doctors, and from them to herbalists and native doctors. Initiates know of serious differences among the herbalist (dispenser of herbs), Onisegun ( pharmacist, pharmacologist, pharmacognocist, compounder of medicines, native doctor), Babalawo (diviner), ifa(a profound system of divination and spiritual wisdom governed by Orisa Orunmila), orunmila (a deity reverred for wisdom, knowledge and ifa divination), Olorun (Owner or Lord of Heaven) and Olodumare (The Supreme Being). Whereas the herbalist dispenses herbs, the native doctors often go beyond the visible to the invisible as the causes of problems besieging the visible. I am not at sea with such descriptions, having had an Out-of-Body Experience (OBE) at 24, as I often describe in my writings, and being sensitive as well to some departed persons if bonds of love held and still hold us together, a situation many persons also experience.

What intrigued me in those conversations with Dr Aiyesimoju and which I believe we may now be hearing a lot more of is that disease may not always be manifestations in tissue, blood, nerves, or bones but what we cannot see, that is astral or ethereal factors or prototypes which bring them about. South Western Nigerian traditional religion and traditional medicine healers believe, for example, that strokes and heart attacks may be caused by demons and phantoms which attach themselves or dig deep into organs which there toby lose their balance and fail, bringing the occurrences about. They employ a number of traditional religion and medicine methods bound to exorcism to free these organs of their assailants. Where they succeed, the patients recover. I have witnessed presentations which suggest that not all the practitioners are schooled full score in these protocols, and this may be why some of them are more reliable than the others.

Where I am heading is the possibility of the development of a machine which is believed may help even orthodox medical doctors to appreciate what the traditional religion and traditional medicine healing value chain have been describing for ages but which, intellectually are not believed to be realities. For example, as I stated above, while the allopathic doctor and the herbalist treat strokes as blockages of blood circulation in the brain in their respective therapeutic ways, the native doctors see the blockages as the resultants of Astral or Ethereal events. This subject is heading towards the realm of the spirit, and of Creation, more of which I believe we should soon be hearing of according to the conceptions of them by Yoruba traditional religion. Before I come to this, I would like to conclude the outcome of my conversation with Dr Aiyesimoju. He is a versatile and researching doctor even in old age at close to 80 or slightly over. Last week, he replied to a follow up question by me in respect of our conversation:

“ What I think you may be referring to is the PIP machine by Harry Oldfield. I have here some links relevant to it: https://www.matrixenergetics.com/pip.aspx

    PIP link

    https://www.electrocrystal.com/pip.html

    PIP link

    https://www.hypnosisresearchinstitute.org/blog.cfm/2021/6/1/Dr-Harry-Oldfield?utm_source=chatgpt.com

PIP link, Seeing Spirit in morgues and people’s spirit guides

    PIP link Phantom limb

I have indicated in the links some of the things particularly pertinent to what you said in your message like seeing phantom limbs, seeing spirit guides and spirits in morgues. Of course there is a great lot about what the PIP does basically, which is to reveal something of the energy radiation of the body and its organs in health and disease. PIP is Polycontrast Interference Photography. I have never contacted users or manufacturers but I am sure that from the links and references should you want to , you would be able to. Should you have further wishes please let me know. With kind regards Aiyesimoju”

In addition to some of those links, I checked the internet for the PIP machine of Harry Oldfield and found the following literature:

“The machine the doctor is referring to is likely the Polycontrast Interference Photography (PIP) machine developed by Harry Oldfield. This device uses a digital video camera and unique computer software to capture and process images of the body’s energy field.PIP works by capturing the energy field around the body, revealing patterns and frequencies that can indicate areas of imbalance or disease

    – It uses a colour-coded system to represent different energy patterns, allowing practitioners to identify areas of inflammation, stress, or other issues

-It can be used to assess the effectiveness of treatments and track changes in the energy field over time

PIP can help identify energetic imbalances that may be contributing to physical or emotional symptoms

    – Practitioners can use PIP to assess the impact of treatments on the energy field and make adjustments as needed

PIP has been used to capture images of phantom limbs, which can be helpful in understanding and treating patients with amputations

    – Some practitioners have used PIP to capture images of spiritual guides, energies, or other non-physical phenomena.”

    Doubt And Belief

I do not believe this machine can see or image ethereal matter but do not doubt the capacity of any machine to behold the lowest fringes of astral matter. Ethereal matter is of a different consistency from gross matter to which the earth belongs. Gross matter is delineable into three… Coarse gross matter, which human eyes and other sense organs can feel and see, unaided or aided with sophisticated gadgets; medium gross matter is much finer than coarse gross matter and is where the spoken word is formed into villages, towns and cities of like nature for the experiencing of their authors when they are called over; fine gross matter, much finer than medium gross matter, is where the human thought is similarly formed into corresponding habitations. Ethereal matter is another world altogether. If the physical body and all the machinery its brain can develop cannot cross the gross material barrier or penetrate medium and fine gross matter, it is impossible for them to see ethereal matter because ethereal matter is tangible to only ethereal matter. Since the earth-man bears ethereal matter within his make up, however, that part of him can be tangible to that part of the ethereal spheres it has developed sensitivity for, or maturity to experience. It is impossible, therefore, for coarse gross material machines to see ethereal matter.

I am aware that some spiritists and occultists during seances and elsewhere do establish some forms of contact with the lowest fringes of intermediate zones between gross matter and medium gross matter with corresponding bodies in their make up which they may have forcibly or naturally developed to be sensitive in these regions. I am aware also that there are a few persons whose ethereal bodies while they are on earth have developed to the point of being sensitive to corresponding areas of the ethereal world consistent with the maturity of their ethereal bodies. Thus, I can assume that these machines may produce fine images of gross matter where gross matter transitionally phase into the coarsest areas of fine gross matter. This zone will be just half a step or one step outside gross matter because the vibrations still resonate with gross matter. This may confirm possible effects of fine grade coarse gross matter on coarse gross matter, or “astral” prototype impact on the physical body which suggests what traditional religion and traditional medicine are saying about disease having origins beyond the physical body.

I cannot doubt this because Semyor Kirlian in his Kirlian photographic techniques had shown us that there is nothing which exists on earth which does not have a prototype finer than gross physical consistency. This is demonstrated in almost everything photographic using this photographic technique. Can we now not explain Ghost Pains under this conception? When a finger or a limb was severed years ago and the person with this dismembered part of his or her body feels they are still there and actually feels harrowing pains in their supposed “empty” spaces, what may be going on? I take a cue from all of these that I am not my body and you are not yours, that between us and our bodies there is even an intervening layer many persons call the Astral form or the prototype after which our bodies were formed. For me, Kirlian photographic technique and the machine Harry Oldfield developed merely confirm the Biblical statement…I knew thee before I formed thee in thy mother’s womb.

What the healers of diseases such as stroke in traditional Yoruba medicine and this machine may be confirming is that…nothing can happen on earth which had not had an astral or even ethereal prototype after which the earthly event merely formed itself. Does the foetus in the womb not develop after its astral prototype? So, if in a disease we call a STROKE in which the machine reveals a demon-like structure with its claws dug into the astral prototype of the patient’s astral body, how can herbs and pharmaceutical drugs help this patient? Could this be why many cases of diseases appear incurable? I have painted these pictures to suggest that a vast curative energy may be released in Yoruba traditional medicine with the recognition by  Yoruba Governors of Yoruba traditional religion and by granting the adherents an August 20 public holiday, every year to celebrate conviction in which is embedded a cosmologinity about health. However, this will depend on how traditional Yoruba religion grows itself towards the recognition of God. Meanwhile, with all due respect, there would appear to have been a stagnation and retrogression in this endeavour. This will take us to the question:What is religion?

    The meaning of religion

An intrinsic ability in the nature of man is the quest for self-discovery, self conciousness and development…and the longing for God. He may grope from below upwards or be guided from above. Guidance from above comes in form of divine messages which have always been distorted or mangled by man after the bringers have gone their own way. Thus, everywhere, we encounter these caricatures of the original messages which have become religions.

The God willed recognition of him is through the Laws of Nature which bear His Creative Will.

The early man began his spiritual education in this earth-school by familiarising himself with rivers, brooks, oceans, forests, rocks, the earth, sun and stars. Later, he learned they were all formed in the creative Will of God by Nature Beings and Elemental Beings. If he was ill and a being in the fields showed him a herb which cured his ailment, he carved an image of this being and worshipped it. Thus, he knew of the water sprites, gnomes, elves and salamanders. Later, he knew they had leaders and Lords and began to worship them, too. The tutons, an ancient Germanic tribe found today largely in Northern Germany and in Denmark, grew in their recognition to know of Valhalla and Olympus, Lords of the elementals. They believed Valhalla was a land of honour up, up in the universe where honourable humans were permitted to reside who worked, walked and fought on the side of the gods. They saw Olympus as the homestead of the gods, particularly Zeus and other olympian deities. These were the realms of animistic beings. Had their recognitions continued to grow upwards, they would have recognised the existence of paradise, their orign and home and, beyond there, received tidings of substantiate divinity which they can never personally behold, that is of the Queen of Heaven, the ArchAngels, the Angels and the 24 elders. Beyond this recognition also, would have come tidings of the Unsubstantiate God Almighty Who can never be seen in His Unsubstantiality by all His creatures.

When St Boniface, an Anglo-Saxon missionary also known as Winfrid, over-ran them with Christianity, he had their idols confisticated and imposed belief in the Supreme God. This was contrary to the spiritual plan of education under which man was to grow in the knowledge of his primary environment and upwards to the knowledge of nature beings and elemental beings, their leaders and Lords , upwards into Ethereal spheres and into the Animistic spheres from where elemental beings, nature beings and the souls of animals derive their orign. It is from here man was to progress his education into The Spiritual realm his origin and through Grace learn through Divine messages of the Divine Substantiate spheres which are the abodes of the Queen of Heaven, the ArchAngels, the Angels and the 24 elders. A substantiate being is one with a known form. After the knowledge of Divine Substantiate comes knowledge of Divine Unsubstantiate…God, whose form no man will ever know or see.

Missionary work obstructed this schooling plan. It became like taking a primary school child straight to the university and preventing him from experiencing intermediate education. Thus, today, Faith is not Living Conviction and therefore artificial. When the average Christian is seriously ill today, he ends up not in a church but in the home of a native doctor! For that is where the living conviction of his spirit is, not in the Supreme God, because he has not progressed inwardly to even Olympus and Valhalla to not mention paradise and substantiate divinity.

Before now, the Yorubas attained the recognition of God without Euro-Americans and Arabians. Their traditional religion, in which is rooted their traditional medicine, anchors this conviction in their language. For example, they affirm… ASE GBE KO SI, ASE PAMO LO WA; ESAN KO GBO OoGUN, ESAN NI AKOBI OLODUMARE. This means…No deed is lost. It can only be hidden. Esan (Justice) defies remedies; justice is the first child of God. What is the Justice of God, if not the Holy Spirit who the Lord Jesus warned was coming to judge the world? The Bible also forewarns that the  Spirit of God hovered over the land. Olodumare means Olodu omo Aare. Odu is secret. Olodu means owner of world secret. Omo AaRe means Son of the Light. God is the light. The son of the light who is Esan (Justice) is the Spirit of Truth, The Holy Spirit.

  • Benefits of eating fruits in season

Any time, any day, I’m an advocate of fruits in season. You get the fruits fresh and cheap. They come packed with many of the natural nutrients. They have not been damaged with preservatives or the nutrients lost through handling.

Currently, mango, African velvet tamarind and avocado pear seem to be the most visible fruits. Though there are other ones but these three seem to be the most popular fruits now so we shall concentrate on their health benefits.

Popularly known as Awin in Yoruba, Icheku in Igbo and Tsamiyar kurm in Hausa, African velvet tamarind is the fruit of a native West African tree (dialium guineense). Especially loved by Nigerian children, velvet tamarind is cultivated not totally for its fruits but as a source of timber and fuel. It is a seasonal fruit with an orange pulp with the velvet shell which has a sweet and tangy taste. The sights of mangoes are so alluring that people cannot help but stop by at local fruit vendor to buy some when it is the season. People naturally love the fruit but probably know nothing about its health benefits. Research reveals that there are 10 diseases this fruit can treat.

Malaria: According to research, the leaf extract inhibits the growth of plasmodium falciparum which causes malaria therefore, taking a decoction can cure malaria.

Treats ulcer and prevents hypertension: The leaf extract of velvet tamarind has the ability to increase gastric mucus secretion. Therefore, a decoction of the leave can be a remedy for gastric ulcer. The leaves are also highly diuretic-promotes the production of urine, making it easier for the heart to pump blood hence, reducing the risk of hypertension.

Anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties: The fruit pulp contains abundant vitamin C which fights against microbial infections. The stem bark has the ability to reduce inflammation in bronchial tubes that arises due to bronchitis.

Improves oral hygiene and cures tooth ache: The stem used as chewing stick (indigenous tooth brush) contains saponin which adds cleaning effect to the teeth and at the same time removes plaques and caries on the teeth of users. The stem bark decoction is also used to treat.

Reliefs menstrual cramp and stops diarrhoea: The stem bark extract has significant analgesic property hence, can be used to reduce menstrual pain. You can take it along with papaya leaf, salt and water to work effectively. It can also stop diarrhoea.

Helps in jaundice and diabetes management: A decoction of velvet tamarind leafs is used in preparing medicinal solution for curing jaundice. It also lowers blood sugar and increases insulin sensitivity hence, can be used to treat diabetes.

Hemorrhoids (pile): Piles are swollen veins in the anal canal caused by too much pressure in the pelvic and rectal areas and while not life threatening, these veins can be very painful. A study performed on ethanolic leaves extract of velvet tamarind showed it to be beneficial for pile treatment.

Velvet Tamarind increases the antioxidant capacity of the body: Oxidative damage which involves free radicals – highly reactive molecules with unpaired electrons, is believed to be one of the mechanisms behind ageing and many diseases. The abundance of antioxidants in the leaves helps protect the human body from damage caused by these free radicals when taken.

Improves lactation and checks genital infections: A review of several studies has concluded that chewing the fruit pulp increase secretion of milk as well as check infections.

Treats scurvy and wounds: The fruit pulp has high ascorbic acid content which is an anti-scurvy vitamin hence used as food supplement. Tender leaves of velvet tamarind, when squeezed and applied on wounds, stimulates the growth of healthy skin and protects the wounds against germs and moisture.

  • Tomatoes, fruits diet restores lungs damaged by smoking, says report

Smokers who quit smoking and live on a diet high in tomatoes and fruits, particularly apples, have better chances of restoring their lung functions impaired by smoking, a new study finds.

The study, published in the December issue of the European Respiratory Journal, said former smokers who eat more tomatoes and fresh fruits regularly saw a slower natural decline in lung function over 10 years.

The study was conducted by the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.

According to it, adults who on average ate more than two tomatoes or more than three portions of fresh fruits and vegetables a day had a slower decline in lung function, compared to those who ate less than one tomato or less than one portion of fruits, daily.

Lung function starts to decline at around 30 and poor lung function is linked to higher risks of death from all diseases, including chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, heart disease and lung cancer.

“A diet rich in fruits can slow down the lung’s natural aging process even if you have never smoked,” said Vanessa Garcia-Larsen, the study’s lead author, who is also an assistant professor in the Bloomberg School’s Department of International Health.

Garcia-Larsen and her team examined diet and lung function of more than 650 adults from Germany, Norway and Britain in 2002 and performed lung function tests on the same group of participants 10 years later.

The researchers found a more striking diet-lung-function among former smokers, who had around 80 ml slower decline over the 10-year period because their diets were highly rich in tomatoes and fruits.

Such a result suggests that the nutrients in their diets are beneficial to repairing the lung damage done by smoking.

  • Ugwuanyi: Fruits of investment drive

Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi’s administration in a recent business engagement with a Chinese Investment Company, Lion Business Park Limited, recorded a major breakthrough in its spirited efforts to attract direct foreign investments to the state for economic recovery and diversification.

The company, is partnering the state government under a Public Private Partnership (PPA) initiative to build an industrial market on a 2000 hectares of land located in the proximity of the Enugu Industrial Park – FTZ ( ENPOWER  Free Trade Zone) at the 9th Mile Corner, Enugu, to be known as Lion Business Park, modelled after the Dragon Market in Dubai.

It is interesting to note that the new business investment was a fallout of the first ever Enugu State Investment Summit, tagged “Oganiru Enugu”, organized by the Ugwuanyi administration in April 2016, to showcase the economic potentials of the state in line with its promise to vigorously promote investment and pursue the diversification of the state’s economy.

The Lion Business Park project is, therefore, a bold initiative of the present administration designed to establish an integrated manufacturing industrial hub that will facilitate Chinese manufacturers’ entry into the state to feed the Nigerian and African market through the existing sales channels in Nigeria and the West African Sub-region in partnership with Nigerian business organizations.

It was strategically initiated to leverage on the thriving trade cooperation between Nigerian Business structures and their foreign counterparts, especially from China, for the purpose of furthering their mutual interests in a more profitable, affordable and convenient setting.

Displaying maximum commitment to the course of the business initiative, the Enugu State government recently facilitated the formal presentation of N300 million worth of cheque to three communities of Ogwofia Owa, Enugu Eke and Akama Oghe by the company as agreed compensation for the economic items, on the acquired land for the development of the project. The cheque presentation was not only a pivotal step towards the commencement and actualization of the project, but also gave credence to the governor’s  promise to proactively promote and attract private investment to the state through policies and programmes that would generate employment as well as boost the state’s economy for sustainable development.

It would be recalled that Governor Ugwuanyi had in his inaugural address promised that his administration “will drive with full force investment promotion…” and “provide the necessary legal and policy framework to make investment thrive” in the state.  The governor also promised to give attention to the 9th Mile Corner, “a long overlooked economic hub” to harness its potentials to enjoy the full benefits of its newly acquired status as a Free Trade Zone. He noted that the initiatives will speed up urban development, generate employment, create fresh economic opportunities and reduce pressure on Enugu metropolis.

It is pertinent to note that during the cheque presentation ceremony, the governor, who was represented by his deputy, Cecilia Ezeilo, highlighted the massive benefits the project will bring to the economy of the state. He stated that such an enduring business venture was apt and will “stimulate investment inflow in diverse sectors of the economy and create a huge economic value chain that would engender employment as well as production and availability of much needed goods and services”.

Declaring that “Enugu State is ready and open for business”, Governor Ugwuanyi reassured all foreign partners and potential investors of his administration’s resolve to sustain the business-friendly environment that exists in the state. In the Memorandum of Understanding for the Lion Business Park, it was agreed that “the investors shall among other benefits, pay compensation for economic items on the land to the host communities through the state government”.

While appreciating the state’s Ministry of Commerce and Industry, indigenes of the three host communities, members of the land acquisition steering committee and others who contributed to the successful acquisition of the land, the governor equally commended the company for the prompt fulfilment of “this very important term of the MOU”.

Expressing gratitude, the Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Sam Ogbu-Nwobodo, applauded Governor Ugwuanyi for his dexterity, vision, innovation, fiscal discipline, transparency, good governance and other structural and institutional initiatives aimed at driving massive investment inflow into the state’s economy.  The visibly elated commissioner noted that the event was a major breakthrough geared towards the full actualization of the investment vision of the present administration in Enugu State, disclosing that the state has “witnessed a sustained high level of investment inflow”, as a consequence of the governor’s tenacious commitment to investment promotion.

The commissioner stated that the state government’s vision “is to create a conducive and profitable environment for Chinese companies to produce in Nigeria ahead of other countries and to enhance strong and enduring bi-lateral ties between the Peoples Republic of China and the Federal Republic of Nigeria”.

While presenting the cheque to the host communities, the chairman of Lion Business Park Limited, Dr. Okechukwu Mbonu also commended Governor Ugwuanyi for his “great vision in making Enugu State a West African industrial hub”, saying that the company is only complementing what his administration has already started in the state.

Appreciating how committed and desirous the governor was to have the project come to fruition, Mbonu assured him of the foreign partners’ determination to actualize their mandate in a record time and went further to thank the host communities for their support, sacrifices and understanding.

Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Air Peace Limited, Chief Allen Onyema, had during a recent meeting with Governor Ugwuanyi  on the economic development of the South East region, described the governor as “a visionary and forward thinking governor who has assembled technocrats to think about what to do for his people”. The Air Peace boss, who disclosed the company’s vision to use the Akanu Ibiam International Airport, Enugu, as the economic hub of Africa, to enable the nation play its leading role in the continent, also affirmed that the decision to establish businesses in Enugu was based on his company’s assessment of the governor’s leadership qualities, positive impacts in governance and commitment to investment promotion.

“We have in Governor Ugwuanyi, the best governor in the South-east. He is very visionary; he has brought many technocrats together to think about what he will do for his people. So, we want to align ourselves with his dreams and that is why we decided to choose Enugu International Airport among all the airports in Nigeria for our business investment”, Onyema said.

As Governor Ugwuanyi has taken the lead to make the coal city state the ultimate destination for tourism and business investments, the onus is, therefore, on the public to support this brave initiative as well as the concerted effort of his administration towards improving the living standard of the people of the state – the true heroes of democracy, for Enugu State is truly in the hands of God.

  • Osun: Savouring the fruits of innovative governance

Osun: Savouring the fruits of innovative governance

As South Western Nigerian leaders of thought, policy implementors and technocrats converge at the ancient city of Abeokuta for the Southwest  governance innovations summit, I am moved to recall two past incidents;  the one, a historic meeting which started at about 6pm and rounded up just before 6am sometime in December 2010.

The venue was the “situation room” at the Bourdillion Road, Ikoyi residence of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu. A new Governor had just been sworn in, a week prior, after three and half years of protracted litigation to regain a misappropriated mandate. That Governor is Rauf Aregbesola.

The purpose of the meeting was to share thoughts with the core leadership of the then Action Congress and a handful of key elements who served in the Lagos cabinet when  Asiwaju Tinubu held sway as the Chief Executive, on the policy thrusts and the direction in which the new government in Osun was going to drive the implementation of its electoral promises. Seated at the long table were the party chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, the National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola, and, as I recall vividly, also present were Prof Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, Yemi Cardoso, Dele Alake, Leke Pitan,   Dr. Charles Diji Akinola,  the Osun Deputy Governor, Mrs Titilayo Laoye- Tomori , this writer, and a couple of other associates from Osun.

At this meeting, those of us close associates of the new governor who were key architects of the Osun renewal took turns to unfold the vision and invited those with cognate experience to critique our game plan and how we were going to execute the “PACT” of Rauf Aregbesola with the people of Osun. The conversations were robust, and centred around the narrative of “Government unusual.” This new governor was going to demystify the office and get really down to the task of serving. Key radical reforms were going to be put in place in vital areas of massive food  production, roads, infrastructure, functional education, youth empowerment, communal security, affordable healthcare delivery, restoring the status of Osogbo as a vital commercial hub, and engendering socio- economic inclusion.

During the course of the night, we addressed the issue of the declining economic fortunes of the country insofar as it continued to rely only on oil as its main revenue base, and came to the conclusion that something drastic had to be done to address the humongous cost of governance occasioned largely by an over bloated bureaucracy, as it was not sustainable. We told the audience that our principal was going to make a stab at pruning down the number of MDAs and collapsing them into efficient and manageable units with appropriate nomenclature.

Recalling the glorious days of the old West with nostalgia, the necessity to harness individual strategic strengths of the  sub-region’s components was not lost on anybody around that long table. We therefore agreed that impetus was to be given to the on-going endeavour efforts to  institutionalize the peer review mechanism that would allow the weak to benefit from the experience of the strong through cross border replication of success stories with a view to better the lot of our peoples  and create sustainable even development.

One key point that stood out is Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola’s declaration that there was going to be a Ministry of Regional Integration and Special duties that would institutionalise  the interface with other states in the region and that other Governors in the South West were to be encouraged to establish similar structure in their respective states.

The other incident; sometime in 2011, I had a one-on-one discussion with a Southwest governor in his private study which, again, drew far into the night during which the Governor lamented with regret: “ Papa Awo (Chief Obafemi Awolowo) had no business trying to rule at the centre.”

According to him, he had it very well made and the old West was notches ahead of the pack at a pace which, if sustained, would have engendered unprecedented growth and development. The forays into national politics, in his view, truncated the rapid economic growth of our people. I couldn’t agree with him more. Six years on, current trends in the polity has reinforced my conviction that this error has now become a conundrum which the Southwest  must quickly disembark from.

Although the  “error” seemed an unending dialogue, akin only to the conversations on Nigeria’s proverbial “potentials” , yet some people were not going to just sit down and moan.

Not surprisingly, a community of interests and tendencies had arisen, working tenaciously parallel to the self-determination, restructuring and diverse agendas, to ensure that the economic emancipation and therefore the developmental growth agenda of the South-west was to be rigorously pursued. And how better to do this than to create a United  common platform for the actualization of the noble task of reversing the diminished opportunities of the South-west for advancement and developmental growth.

It soon began to dawn (pun intended) on Yoruba thinkers that the future portends grave danger for any component of our federation tying its economic fortunes to handouts from the centre which, itself depends on a failing international commodity.

It was time to be creative and innovative. And those elements eventually found a round peg for this round hole, in the person of Oladipo Famakinwa. A new platform was formally launched  and called Development Agenda  for Western  Nigeria.( DAWN) with this dynamic young man as the first Director General. This is not an attempt to rewrite the DAWN story. Indeed it has been, and continues to be written by the appropriate authority through the plethora of initiatives and activities it has undertaken so far in pursuance of its mandate either suo motu, or in collaboration with other agencies.

Perhaps, one Governor who personified innovation in governance is Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola. He hit the ground running in 2010 and in a matter of days he embarked on the rebranding project which saw Osun having an Armorial bearing (a replica of the Old Western Nigeria coat of Arms), a state anthem, flag, the components of which, when interpreted, speak to the struggle, rich historical, socio-economic and cultural heritage of Yorubaland. Then of course was the flagship Osun Youth Employment Scheme (OYES), through which the governor had promised 20,000 jobs in the first 100 days – a promise that was actually delivered in 97 days!

What followed was a comprehensive package of radical reforms in the Education sector; notably, the introduction of the Educational Learning Aid (Opon Imo), an unprecedented schools infrastructure project, and, perhaps, the largest volume of road construction projects ever embarked upon by any government in Nigeria. But he didn’t stop there. He wanted an OMBUDSMAN and due process office that would put all policy implementers on their toes, in order to achieve maximum delivery.

And this brings to mind the remarks of Ban Ki- Moon, the then UN Secretary General in his remarks to the Council on Timor- Leste on December 19 2009:

“…as we all know, infrastructure is not just a matter of roads, schools and power grids. It is equally a question of strengthening democratic governance and the rule of law. Without accountability, not only of the government to its people but of the people to each other, there is no hope for a viable democratic state. .”

This statement aptly describes the mission of the Bureau of Social Services (BOSS). Having been involved in the design, incubation and execution of this pioneering initiative, I am moved to congratulate Ogbeni Rauf Aregbesola for the success stories that Osun has brought to the table during the just concluded Southwest Governance Innovation Summit 2017.

Ogbeni’s reforms in good governance through radical interventions are too numerous to be mentioned here, but permit me to single out three particular polices reforms which have been selected by DAWN and deemed worthy of replication by other states. The first is the Agricultural Land Holding and Development Authority Bill, which, though yet to be passed by the State of Osun House of Assembly, however, the Executive Order has has been signed by the Governor in order to meet current exigencies. This Law is designed to mitigate hardships occasioned by the Land Use Act militating against agricultural land ownership by small holder farmers and cooperatives.

The second is (O-Meal) the elementary School Lunch programme which received high acclaim and concerning which the governor had course to address a session before a committee of the British House of Commons.

The third one is the establishment of the Bureau of Social Services (BOSS), an OMBUDSMAN agency with overarching powers to ensure accountability and public value delivery across the parameters of Programs, Policies, and Projects.

Innovation has thousands of differently documented definitions. There are diverse interdisciplinary perspectives to defining this word the simplest of which is to be found in WIKKIPEDIA:  ”innovation is a new idea, device, or method”. In the domain of practical economic analysis, and I daresay, governance, innovation can generally be considered to be the result of a process that brings together novel ideals in a way that they affect society. (Still quoting Wikkipedia), innovation drives idea to value. Creativity is the capacity to generate novel and pragmatic ideas, but unless applied, it remains just an idea.

Innovation therefore can safely, in my view, be described as Applied Creativity.

What Ogbeni has done in Osun is not only to bring creativity to designing his ‘government unusual’, but also to apply that creativity in the delivery of public value. It certainly gives one a sense of pride to be part of that effort.

I use to hear about this growing up but never for once took the claim serious until few years ago. Although this fruit is low in calorie, it contains a significant amount of phyto-nutrients that could boost libido and stamina. It contains citrulline, lycopene and beta-carotene. Citrulline is converted to Arginine, an amino acid that increases citric oxide levels in the body. Water melon is a natural enhancement for boosting sex drive; the seeds contain magnesium which has aphrodisiac effects on the consumer thereby increasing libido and stamina.
    Avocado:
Avocados contain lots of potassium which improves stamina as well as it increases blood flow. When blood flows and rushes into the sexual organ, the desire to have sex is increased. The avocado tree is sometimes called the Testicle Tree because of the fruit’s shape when compared to the human testicles and it growing in pairs. Avocados also support healthy cardiovascular system and help in the regulation of blood sugar; thus they are safe to consume. Avocados are high in folic acid which would help increase sperm count in men.
