    Fulani herdsmen, sponsors and patrons

Apart from its iniquity and brutality, very little was known of Nigerian Fulani herdsmen, rated by Global Terrorism Index as the fourth deadliest terrorist group in the world,  coming after Boko Haram, ISIS and Al-Shabab. They reportedly killed about 1,229 Nigerians between 2013 and 2014. And since our traditional Fulani herdsmen don’t carry sophisticated arms, many had thought only infiltrators from neighbouring countries could have inflicted so much sorrow on innocent women and children across the Middle Belt of Nigeria. Armed with sophisticated weapons, these men whose identity, state of origin  or nationality are  unknown, killed, maimed and disappeared, leaving many in pain. Government even with its control of awesome apparatus of state power has yet to apprehend or prosecute any of their members.

The narrative however changed with last week intervention by Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II and Alhaji Sale Bayeri, the Secretary-General of Gan-Allah Fulani Development Association and member of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association’s (MACBAN) Board of Trustees. The former admitted he is a patron of Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, the body that gives protection to Fulani herdsmen. Other patrons according to him include the Sultan of Sokoto, Lamido of Adamawa and emirs of Zazzau and Katsina.” The objective of the Fulani herdsmen umbrella body according to him is the “protection of the fundamental rights of herdsmen as Nigerians including constitutional right to freedom of movement and the ownership of private wealth and peaceful conduct of their business.”

He traces the cause of the crisis to “demographic implosion in the North, desertification, reduction in water reserves and competition for resources, crop production, animal husbandry and fishing” but blames the prolonged crisis and the attendant terrorism to “failure of political authority, the cynical manipulation of ethnic identity by failed governments and the impotence of our security machinery.”

He however vigorously defended the action of the herdsmen citing the alleged murder of “800 Fulani women, infants and the elderly.” whose  personal dossier he claimed he “ personally handed over to the Federal Government with the names and pictures’ as well as  names and addresses of persons known to have participated in these acts of ethnic cleansing”.

The latter, Alhaji Sale Bayeri, chose to warn us about the “grave consequences if 18 million Fulanis continue to perceive deliberate injustice”, threatening that “the Boko Haram insurgency would be a child’s play if herdsmen and farmers’ conflicts are not resolved in a way that is acceptable to all sides.” And what would appease the rampaging herdsmen, he said was contained in a 70-page letter he had sent to President Buhari before his inauguration. In it was a demand for an un-hindered grazing access in areas he identified as ‘trouble spots’ spread across 75 local government areas across 21 states including   “ Oye Local Government in the northern part of Ekiti, Shaki in Oyo State, Akwa-Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, Delta, Edo, Bauchi, Gombe, Yola”.

And with foreboding finality, both Fulani leaders insist “Benue anti-grazing law cannot work”, while Bayeri seems to demand as of right that “there should be open grazing for those people who think it is traditional and cultural to do it because that is their only form of exercise, leisure and pleasure.” The ‘leisure and pleasure’ of herdsmen he seems to say, take precedence over ownership of cultivated farms or uncultivated land belonging to private individuals.

With such robust defence and backing of Fulani herdsmen by their principals, we need not ask the source of their sophisticated weapons, what embolden them to act with impunity and why no one has been brought to book to date.

The contempt and the arrogance exhibited by the aggressors while the bodies of their victims were about to be laid to rest once again raise the issue of restructuring as the only answer to our crisis of nationhood. It is apparent that some of our compatriots don’t believe we are running a federal system of government. This can only be the explanation why the Emir of Kano believes he can from his Kano fiefdom dictate to Benue State governor how to run the affairs of his state. Under a federal constitution, especially in an age when the federal arrangement has become market driven, the only option available to Emir Sanusi of Kano is to encourage settlers who are dissatisfied with Benue laws to migrate to Kano, if his fiefdom holds better prospects.

Within a federal set up, desert encroachment, population implosion or competition for resources may attract federal support but cannot be sufficient reasons to demand by force, free grazing zones in the farmlands of federating states or threat to invite fellow Fulani across the borders to unleash further terror if the federal government fails to prevail on recalcitrant states.

Beyond capturing territories, which His Royal Highness , Emir of Kano says is ‘daft argument’, it is not lost on many Nigerians that it is only those with mindset of feudal lords that will demand as of right to embark on open grazing across the farm lands of other federating states.

I sympathise with Governor Samuel Ortom and the people of Benue State who have just buried another set of 73 victims in the vicious cycle of terror that started in Tiv land long before independence. Unfortunately, until Governor Ortom, successive Tiv leaders betrayed the spirit of Joseph Tarka who along with Awo paid dearly for their attempt to create an identity for the Tiv people.  Successive Tiv leaders including the David Mark, eight years Senate President and his group who are now threatening to set up an army have betrayed the Benue people by choosing to pick crumps from the table of those who have openly declared Tiv land as spoil of war following their great grandfather’s conquest of Tiv land.

And finally, I sympathise with President Buhari whose failure to seize an historic opportunity to become a statesman, with all his imperfections, alleged nepotism, cronyism and soft spot for Fulani herdsmen, he is the only Nigerian leader that has truly put Nigeria first not necessarily because of what he stands to gain politically or financially. He is unlike Obasanjo whose claim of being ‘Mr. Nigeria’ secured for him a military head of state and a two-term president when he would have not risen beyond a local council chairman due to the nature of politics of his Yoruba people.

I recently asked, unfortunately without getting an answer, someone I believe is sufficiently close enough to know the way the mind of the president works. It is curious that President Buhari would ignore the wise counsel of Nigerian patriots like Wole Soyinka, Emeka Anyaoku and others on restructuring and then move on to squander away the goodwill of millions of Nigerians who had wanted to make an Abraham Lincoln out of him, choosing to swim along with those with mindset of feudal lords and their public face like David Mark who has asked those who identified  restructuring as answer to our crisis of nationality to  “first restructure their minds”.

Fulani herdsmen and the killing fields of Benue

The news headlines are literally dripping of blood! Let us list a few of them: ‘Armed Fulani Herdsmen kill 50 in Benue’. ‘Another 55 people killed by Fulani herdsmen in Taraba state.’ ‘Killings by herdsmen: Soyinka lambasts FG.’ ‘My people have been abandoned by the FG’-Gov. Ortom of Benue State. ‘Fayose holds security summit with hunters over killer herdsmen, calls for them to be labelled as terrorists’.

But the one that got me intrigued was the claim by the presidency that Nigerians have not raised much concern by way of publicity on the mindless menace. As a response I hereby  reproduce  my opinion essay first published on March 27,2016.This is to show why governments at all levels must take public affairs analysts more seriously, even as they are enjoined to live up to their responsibilities to the people.

The scarce regard for the sanctity of human life, as callously exhibited by the spate of senseless killings of defenceless Agatu people by fully armed, rampaging Fulani herdsmen in Benue State diminishes us as a nation, as a people. Yet, it did not all start today. From the states of Plateau through Taraba to Benue, the blood-thirsty marauders masquerading as pastoralists, but driven more by an expansionist agenda have wasted thousands of innocent lives. With impunity as their wielding stick, they still walk our streets as free men because here we are not equal before the laws of the land. That is just part of the pain.

The other is the obvious utter negligence of duty, or at best the lukewarm attitude of security personnel to the wanton wasting of the priceless lives of fellow citizens. Policing, should ordinarily inculcate the culture of sensitive information gathering, identifying potentially volatile areas of conflict and deploying well-trained personnel there to forestall such issues from exploding to unmanageable conflagration. Taking proactive measures would have saved thousands of lives. Prevention, as the wise ones say is not only cheaper but wiser than cure. But as we have witnessed in the horrendous macabre dance of death by the insurgency monster and politically-motivated killings before, during and after elections, our security men have been left wondering what really went wrong. It is therefore, hardly surprising that conflicting figures of casualty are given, after the deadly deed is done.

For instance, while one Paul Ede, the coordinator of the civil society groups put the number of Agatu people sent to their early graves by the Fulani militia men as 400, the Commissioner of Police, Benue State Command, Paul Yakadi claimed that: “only three corpses were seen in Aila and Adagbo”. It was a similar account of shadowy figures paraded in 2015 after Egba, another Agatu village was brought to ruins by some Fulani herdsmen when media reports put the figures of the victims at 90 but the then Police Commissioner of Benue State, Hyacinth Dagala claimed only 30 corpses were recovered.

It was however good enough that the police chief painted the larger picture in a more honest perspective for the recent killings. He explained how the invaders moved en mass from Loco and Doma in the neighbouring Nassarawa State and brazenly sacked seven villages in Benue State. In the mindless mayhem that followed, many Agatu villages were razed to rubbles, some 7,000 occupants thrown into disarray after which their places of origin were taken over by the army of Fulani herdsmen and some 5,000 cattle. The excuse being given in some quarters that the recent attacks came as reprisal mission of vendetta for the killing of a Fulani chieftain by some Agatu militia men further exposes the obvious lack of prompt response to potentially combustible situations. That tragic event was said to have taken place back in 2013. So far, the two wrongs committed have not added up to a right.

The current horrifying spectacle reminds one of how in December 2011, some armed Fulani men invaded a village somewhere on the Plateau at the dead of night, burnt their huts to ashes and used nets to ‘capture’ those running for their dear lives, only to be hideously hacked to death with daggers, axes and cutlasses, as if they were some sacrificial fowls. It was a similar gory tragedy back in 2013 when 74 mobile policemen and four DSS operatives were assaulted and their lives brutally wasted by the Ombatse cult group in Nassarawa. Did these gory tales take place in the 21st century Nigeria, one may be compelled to ask? Yes, of course. Worse still, no one was brought to book, to pay for the priceless lives lost. That again, shows us just how equal we really are before the law.

This saddening, sorry situation throws up mind-riveting questions. What would have happened for instance, if it was the Agatu people that had gone up North to kill Fulani herdsmen, for some spurious reasons? Who has been arming them with sophisticated weapons, including AK 47 rifles? Why have both Suswan, the former Benue State governor and his successor, Ortom found it one Herculean task to curb the menace of blood-seeking Fulani herdsmen? Why couldn’t they borrow a fresh leaf from the erstwhile governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, whose administration established grazing fields for the cattle rearers beyond which they could not graze? Why haven’t the Police nabbed even one person and bring him to trial over these atrocities? What lessons are our political helmsmen passing on to the current and future generations, if they have grossly failed to abide by the dictates of Section14 Sub Section 2(b) of the 1999 Constitution, (as Amended) which expressly states that the primary purpose of government is to first and foremost guarantee the security of the lives and property of the citizenry as well as provide their welfare?

The answers to these burning questions would go a long way towards restoring the confidence of the citizens in government, as a protective and providing father figure. Our legislators should come up with laws to guide the activities of nomadic Fulani herdsmen and offenders made to face the full wrath of the law. Equally important, is for both the state and federal governments to find a lasting solution to the recurring ugly decimal of innocent, harmless Nigerians finding themselves defenceless before fellow armed citizens of whatever professional or religious disposition. Many a farmer, as it happened to Chief Olu Falae, have found themselves haunted by the spectre of armed pastoralists laying claim to lands they do not own. They behave as if their cows were more important than the cash crops they trample on, or turn to foodstuff, or the irreplaceable lives of the owners they waste.

Indeed, the frequency and gravity of the killing spree by Fulani herdsmen should inform us that we are greatly under-policed. It also shows that the current centralized policing system, just like that of our political power structure, is antithetical to the dictates of an enduring democratic culture. We need more of community policing, in a similar way that we deserve a diffusion of power from the bloated federal centre. Both breed bad blood. Impunity must be done away with. A Truth and Reconciliation Committee should be set up by the state government to get to the root of these recurring and worrisome inter-ethnic clashes and bring them to an end. Above all, Nigerians must be treated as equals before the law.

Updated: Buhari urges restraint in Benue

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday urged the government and people of Benue State to exercise restraint following the recent attacks on some communities, assuring that all the perpetrators of violence in the state will be made to face the wrath of the law.

Receiving a delegation of political leaders, traditional rulers and elders of the state led by Governor Samuel Ortom at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, President Buhari said all those involved in the conflict that culminated in loss of lives would not escape justice, including any illegally armed militia in the state.

The President, according to a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, also commiserated with all the victims of the attacks and the families who lost loved ones and properties, noting that the government will make efforts to ameliorate the situation of all the victims.

President Buhari said relevant agencies had been directed to start catering for the humanitarian needs.

He said: “Your Excellency, the governor, and all the leaders here, I am appealing to you to try to restrain your people. I assure you that the police, the Department of State Service (DSS) and other security agencies had been directed to ensure that all those behind the mayhem get punished.

“I ask you in the name of God to accommodate your country men. You can also be assured that I am just as worried, and concerned with the situation.”

The President told the delegation that his administration had already begun a process of finding lasting solution to the perennial challenge of herdsmen conflict with farmers and communities around the country.

President Buhari said the Inspector General of Police had been directed to relocate to the state to provide security for lives and properties, urging all Benue indigenes to trust the security agencies and report all suspicious movements in the state.

In his remarks, Governor Ortom said the tension would be reduced with the Federal Government’s determination to find a lasting solution to the herdsmen attacks.

“We will leave here to rebuild confidence in our people,’’ he said.

The Tor-Tiv, Prof. James Ayatse, said his entire domain had been thrown into mourning due to the incessant attacks.

“We want you to put an end to the gruesome situation,’’ he added.

Present at the meeting were Benue State Deputy Governor, Benson Abounu, former Senate President, David Mark, former Benue State Governor, George Akume and Sen. Barnabas Gemade.

Others were – Sen. Joseph Waku, Gen. Lawrence Onoja (retd), Brig. Gen. John Atom Kpera (retd), former Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Michael Aondoakaa, Speaker of Benue State House of Assembly, Terkimbir Kyambe, and other members of the National and State Assemblies from the state.

Buhari orders security agents to fish out killer herdsmen

President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday ordered the relevant security agencies in the country to fish out the killer herdsmen in Benue State.

At least 73 persons have been killed by Fulani herdsmen since January 1 in Benue.

Speaking with State House journalists after leaders from Benue State met with the President behind closed doors in Abuja, the state governor, Samuel Ortom, also said that the leaders from the state had demanded that the killer herdsmen be arrested and prosecuted.

Stressing that he now understands what cattle colony means, Ortom said Benue State does not have the required land space to operate cattle colony.

He said: “As you can see I’m here with the entire leadership of Benue State, members of the National Assembly, the Tor Tiv, Ochi Idoma and the leadership of Benue State House of Assembly and other very distinguished sons and daughters of Benue State.

“You are aware of the challenge we had since the 1st of January up to this moment. Several people were killed, more than 60,000 people displaced and we are still counting.

“We thought it was wise as the father of the land and as the President of our country there is need to meet with him to interface with him.

“At a personal level, I spoke to the President on phone on the 1st of January when his incident occurred and he responded promptly. And I followed it up with a visit, he directed the location of IGP to Benue State in addition to sending additional troops from the military.

“So the situation as at today is relatively calm although there are pockets of issues. For the past five days we have witnessed two killings compared to what was happening before. Other places are relatively calm, the security men and the IGP and the Benue State government had been working day and night to ensure that we bring the situation under control and stop the killings.

“There are still security issues from one town to the other like some few days ago we had an uproar in Makurdi local government, headquarters of Benue State where some hoodlums wanted to take advantage. That is one of the things we have discovered in trying to create confusion so that they can go in there and loot.

‘We have made it known that for us in Benue State is that there is no room for anyone taking laws into his hands. It is expected even when you are offended or someone violates the law, the best thing to do is to report, by that we will be able to impose our sanctions on such people. But when you take laws into your hand  you are inviting anarchy and we will not accept this.

“So we are here to appreciate Mr. President for providing security, yesterday (Sunday) we also received relief materials based on his directives to NEMA and is being shared among the five IDP camps that we have in Benue State.

“But beyond that we made strong appeal to Mr. President to arrest those people that perpetrated this act, the Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, because they are not above the law. They made inciting statements against our people and they came and perpetrated this act.

“And until this time I speak to you, they are still issuing out threats and it is not about just anti-grazing law, it is occupation because the manner with which they come and attack the man and take over the land it is something. I am not sure willing to join issues with anyone. We are law abiding citizens, we are not going to let our people go out of control.”

Breaking: Oyedepo warns of looming danger over herdsmen attacks

Presiding Bishop of Living Faith World Outreach, David Oyedepo has urged the federal government to halt the nationwide killing spree by Fulani herdsmen to prevent the disintegration of the country.
He gave the warning on Sunday in a message titled “a wake up call to a nation in a state of slumber.”
According to him, insurgency is spreading across the country under the guise of attacks by herdsmen.
Noting of a looming danger unless the herdsmen are brought to book, Bishop Oyedepo said Nigerians who are victims of the incessant attacks may be forced to take the law in their hands to protect themselves.
“How many of the so called herdsmen have been arrested since they have been engaging in their murderous acts?
“They must have the backing of some power full forces encouraging them to do what they are doing, ” Oyedepo stated.

    Full transcript of the message

“Prophets have the responsibility to engage fervently on the prayer altar for the salvation of the soul of a nation. Prophets have a duty to warn people, warn nations against impending danger. I’m sent as a prophet to the nations and He grants me access to divine confidentialities about nations. So, I have this wake-up call to a nation in its state of slumber.”

    Boko Haram in Disguise

“Insurgency is spreading across the nation under the guise of Fulani Herdsmen, danger is looming. For example, how many of these killers have been brought to book since their campaign of carnage, dearth and destruction began, one may ask. They must have the backing of some invisible powers. A nation-wide crisis or unrest is in the offing and may be worse than anyone known around the world.

Now, tell me what is the morality behind some strangers, who are doing their business as cattle-rearers to overrun your farm with your labour of planting, cultivating and nurturing your plant, and graze their cattle over your crops, and when you challenge them, they kill you on top of it? Where are the leaders of thought in Nigeria? Where is the government? And that continues unabated.

We are sitting on the keg of gunpowder. God spoke to me about it as far back as 1992, that a time like this was coming; it’s plainly written in my diary. Nigeria shall not be destroyed. God shall trouble all the troublers of the progress and peace of this nation.

A Nation At War With Herself

“The destiny of our nation has never been under any threat of survival as it is today. People may soon be forced to take laws into their hands. The security apparatus of the nation has obviously failed to defend the lives and properties of these poor farmers across the nation. Where we are claiming to curtail the Boko Haram onslaught, we are on the other hand sponsoring or abetting Fulani Herdsmen and their murderous acts.

Nigeria is a nation at war with herself. No external aggressions or aggressors, not ethnic crisis, no natural disaster, yet we are doing mass-burials. What a nation in a state of slumber? Hear the voice of the Lord through this prophet. The soul of Nigeria is near the point of death. Citizens of this nation are fast becoming endangered species. God have mercy!

Should Farmers Be Killed For Fulani Herdsmen To Live?

“Let me ask these pertinent questions that bother on conscience of a nation and her leaders. Is cattle business government business? Should farmers be killed for Fulani Herdsmen to live? Should all the farmers leave their farms today in the fear of Fulani Herdsmen? As at the last time I knew, Nigeria still produces less than 20% of what she eats. What is the contribution of the Herdsmen and their cattle business to the GDP of Nigeria? There is more to this slow response of government to addressing this sensitive issue which is obviously a time bomb.

Are Fulani Herdsmen the Owners of Nigeria?

“Question number 2: Does Nigerian land belong to the Fulani Herdsmen? There has never been this kind of assault on the intelligence of the people like we have it now. Should you allocate my father’s land to Fulani Herdsmen? Never! There will be brutal response. No, No. Are they now the customary land owners of every state, city, town, village and hamlet in Nigeria? There is danger in the offing. Every community may soon set up their own security system to defend the insurgency of the Fulani Herdsmen.

Do You Still Trust the Security Agencies?

“Question number 3: Can the citizens still trust the security agencies of this nation for their protection? You will be vulnerable for life! Where citizens cannot trust government for security, a state of anarchy is in view. Insurrection may as well be on the way. This largely unchecked aggression of Fulani Herdsmen may eventually choke the soul of Nigeria to death. God forbid!

Is the Nigerian Project Still On Course?

“Question number 4: Is the Nigerian project still working? Without justice there cannot be peace. You don’t step on my toes and say let’s have peace. I say ‘remove your leg, you are on my toes,’ and you say ‘no.’ You can’t have peace but exchange of blows! Caution! Let politicians be warned! Don’t sell off the destinies of men for your ambitions.

    Because I Have a Stake in This…

“I have been praying and I have changed my prayer level in praying for the generations of this church. That Lord, let this church continue to grow both in my life time and the generations after me. True leaders mind the coming generations. Nigeria is rescued! Let no religious bigot say to me, “But what is your concern? Wait! By the grace of God, one out of every 150 Nigerians is under my apostolic coverage. So you are not a leader by elective office, you are a leader by the amount of people you have responsibility over. I am answerable to God on what happens to them. You can’t kill their fathers and mothers in the name of being in power. Enough is enough.”

God Still Confirms the Words of His Prophets

“When prophets speak, God confirms it. You have seen God confirm the things I say time and again. These wicked forces will be visited by vengeance!”

No Value for Human Life in Nigeria

Is our sense for human value as a nation still alive today? I don’t know. What I know is that it’s not alive. Today human lives are now being slaughtered for cattle without any drastic intervention from relevant security agents. Should men and women and children continue to lay down their lives for cattle? There is no nation on the earth where the defence of cattle is above the defence of human lives. How are these killers making away with their murderous acts? They must have the backings of the powers that be. Any right thinking Nigerian will speculate same. Is Boko Haram not spreading strategically across the nation? How many cows will a Fulani Herdsman sell to buy an AK47 Riffle which now stands at about N3 million per piece. A cow, the fattest is N180,000 – N200,000. To buy five rifles equals N15million; all the cattle they have is not up to that! You don’t hire security guard in a room-and-parlour apartment. Some fellows supply these arms and you cannot tell how much stockpile of arms they have.

    A Word is Enough!

Nigeria is becoming an endangered nation where any group of people may attempt to overrun the nation overnight. Caution! Caution!! Caution!!! To everyone responsible for the affairs of this nation, Caution! The reason why prophets speak is so that He does not require the blood of the people from them. God has sent me to warn this nation; a flood of evil is at the door. But for the sake of the elect, God will spare this nation. The wickedness of the wicked will fall on their head! Thank you Jesus!

    Wake Up Nigeria, Wake Up!

“Nigeria should wake up out of slumber and defend the unity of our great nation, or “To your tent O Israel” will be the last resort. God prophetically has unmasked this masquerade so that the fear of WHO and WHAT may be behind the mask does not exist. These are not Fulani Herdsmen; there are fingers behind the scene, abetting, promoting, empowering them and supplying the arms.

I saw it coming in 1992; am not talking about the government, I’m talking about what God showed me about the nation. I saw it coming, I wrote it down. Fearful, but God said, “If I can find 50 people in that city, I will save it. For the

Video: Buhari has nothing to do with herdsmen killings – Presidency

The Presidency has said Fulani Herdsmen attacking farmers and their communities is a situation of pure criminality that has nothing to do with President Mohammodu Buhari.

President Buhari has been accused of keeping silent and not intervening in killings allegedly carried out by fulani herdsmen in some states across the country.

Femi Adesina, the President Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, in a video posted on his  personal Facebook account, said the crisis predate the current government and not happening because the president is of a Fulani ethnic-tribe.

He said: “Something that is disturbing that I have heard about it is linking those developments to the fact that a Fulani man is president and so, he is brooking such kind of evil acts.

“I think that is very unkind. And I will try to back my position with statistics.

“In 2013, particularly, there were nine cases of herdsmen invading communities in Benue state alone and more than 190 people were killed.’’

The presidential aide also noted that in 2014, there were about 16 of such tragic developments with more than 231 people killed.

He further explained that there was a change of government in May 2015, but between January and May 2015, there were six attacks which left about 335 people dead.

“Now, the question is, during that period, did we have a Fulani president? This is showing us that the issue of herdsmen attacking settlements, attacking farmers, attacking communities is pure criminality and it is something that government must deal with.

“It is the duty of government to preserve the lives of the citizenry. It is the responsibility of government to maintain law and order and that this government is determined to do.

“Therefore, let nobody say that all this is happening because we have a Fulani president.

“We have had many Fulani presidents in the past and this issue of herders and local communities at loggerheads has predated this government,’’ he added.

Adesina, therefore, appealed to all citizens to continue to support and cooperate with the Buhari administration as the government was poised to find lasting solutions to the conflicts.

According to him, the government is determined to get to the bottom of it and it will get done.

Fayose rallies Ekiti against Herdsman invasion

    …urges all-round patrol in Communities

Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose on Wednesday rallied local hunters against possible invasion by suspected Fulani herdsmen. Sounding the battle cry against while hosting the hunters at the Government House pavilion, Fayose alleged that intelligence report available to him revealed that “Bororo” herdsmen have surreptitiously

    entered the state.

Fayose who wore a camouflage shirt, a pair of trousers and a fez cap to match “to reflect the mood of the nation” urged the hunters to go back home and defend the people. Apart from the local hunters, others who showed up at the forum are the Agbekoyas, vigilance groups, the Tivs, Idomas and Igedes from Benue State who are resident in Ekiti.

The event was highlighted by intermittent firing of gun shots, whistling and songs by the hunters. Fayose who sympathized with the people of Benue State where scores have been killed by suspected herdsmen, vowed that he would not allow his people to be slain as done in the Northcentral State.

The Ekiti governor claimed that the alleged plan to invade Ekiti was to make the state ungovernable ahead of the July 14 governorship
election. Fayose said the situation in Benue and Taraba States has shown that “President Buhari lacks the capacity to protect Nigerians.”

He said: “I have received letters that the Bororos have entered our reserves, they want to violate our laws. I want to call on the attention of the Federal Government that they have come and wanted to kill men, women and kids in Ekiti.

“We will not allow that to happen here in Ekiti; I want you all our hunters to go back today to protect your people. Be vigilant, open your eyes and make sure that everybody entering the state is screened.

“No one in the guise of grazing should enter our land after 8.00 pm. Four our brothers who harbour criminals, tell them Ekiti is a no-go area. If your plan is to make this state ungovernable, you are wasting your time.

“I have called thois meeting for everyone to be vigilant; I will begin to support you now to secure Ekiti. Don’t let them take you by surprise, don’t allow them to take Ekiti by storm.

“Go to the farms and keep vigil; don’t just entertain visitors that come in the night, screen them. We don’t want visitors in our reserves at 8.00 pm.”

Fayose added: “This (camouflage) dressing is done to charge our hunters to secure the state. I saw pictures of the killings (in Benue) and I wonder if those were human beings.

“I asked the question if people could be that picked to kill human beings that way; they will find no peace. It is no tribal killings but
    that of mindless people.

“The blood of the departed will find those people and they won’t know peace. It is the duty of the Federal Government to protect its people. We are not protected.

“We have never had it so bad; people must come to leadership with conscience. The Federal Government should have sent the Army and not
    the Police.

“Governor (Samuel) Ortom should fasten his belt and protect his people. Those seeking for help in Abuja would not find because Abuja also needs help. I sympathise with you (Benue) people and nobody will kill you. You are all safe here.”

Fayose also gave out telephone hot lines through which people who noticed strange movements can call for urgent attention.

‘Killings still going on in Benue’

A group, Community Development Coalition (CDC), has raised the alarm that Fulani herdsmen are still carrying out killings in Guma and Logo local government areas of Benue State.

The atrocities, they said were occurring despite the deployment of police operatives and the relocation of the Inspector-General of Police, Idris Ibrahim, to the state.

The CDC Convener, Prof. Yima Sen, told journalists at a news conference in Abuja on Wednesday, that he had visited the affected communities and was informed that the violent attacks by the herdsmen had not abated.

Sen expressed dissatisfaction with the security situation, noting that the security forces on the ground have been unable to stop the bloodshed across the state.

“I left the crisis area about 5 hours ago and from my consultations with the people, killings are still going on; am not satisfied, if I tell you that am satisfied with the security situation, I would be lying. I have also consulted with the people and they are not satisfied with the situation,” he stated.

The CDC vowed to do all that is legally and humanly possible to ensure the full implementation of the Benue state anti-open grazing prohibition law.

It said it would also facilitate “the emergence of a robust, reliable and sustainable community-driven defence and security system.”

The group rejected the proposed cattle colonies for herdsmen by the Federal Government, insisting that no inch of Benue land would be given out to the herdsmen.

Sen said, “We can’t be colonized by the Fulanis, they can ranch, but if anyone is talking about cattle colonies, they should find another location, not Benue.”

He highlighted the benefits of ranching, which he said would increase productivity and guarantee safety of the animals and the herdsmen, describing it as a civilized way of keeping livestock.

The CDC Convener accused President Muhammadu Buhari of turning a blind eye to the atrocities of the herdsmen.

He said, “We are left with no option than to conclude that the President, who by the way, is the grand patron of Miyetti Allah, has turned a blind eye and is bent on keeping deaf ears, to these atrocities, or that he is actively involved in this diabolical and outrageous scheme.”

  • It’s unfair to say Buhari condoning killer herdsmen – Presidency

It’s unfair to say Buhari condoning killer herdsmen – Presidency

The Presidency says it is unfair for anyone to say President Mohammodu Buhari is condoning the killings by Fulani Herdsmen in Benue and other neighboring States.

President Buhari has been accused of keeping silent and not intervening in killings allegedly carried out by fulani herdsmen in some states across the country.

The President on Tuesday in a statement by Garba Sheu, his senior special assistant to the president on media said he is conscious of his duty to Nigerians, not least because he is held accountable for everything that goes wrong.

He said Buhari deeply sympathizes with all victims of the violence and is determined to bring it to a permanent end.

“President Muhammadu Buhari has been concerned about these conflicts each time he received those very gruesome pictures of mayhem from several parts of the country, especially as it affected Benue and neighbouring states. He is equally worried about some public pronouncements and finger-pointing that are, in most cases very unhelpful to peaceful coexistence of our diverse peoples”.

“The President is conscious of his duty to Nigerians, not least because he is held accountable for everything that goes wrong. He deeply sympathizes with the families and all the other direct and indirect victims of this violence. He is determined to bring it to a permanent end”.

“While there are many Nigerians who see the conflict between the nomadic herdsmen and peasant farmers as an ethnic problem, others point to religious differences and agenda. The President does not subscribe to such simplistic reductionism”.

“President Buhari holds the view, as do many experts, that these conflicts are more often than not, as a result of major demographic changes in Nigeria. When Nigeria attained independence, the population of the country was estimated at about 63,000,000. Today the population is estimated at close to 200,000,000; while the land size has not changed and will not change. Urban sprawl and development have simply reduced land area both for peasant farming and cattle grazing”.

“It is therefore both unfair and unkind, for anyone to keep insinuating that the President is condoning the spate of killings in Benue and other neighboring States”.

“President Buhari has publicly condemned the violence at every turn. He is prepared to permit every possible step that can lead to the stoppage of the killings. It is on account of this he brushed aside an opinion that the federal government should challenge the constitutionality of the anti-open grazing bill. He wanted to give a chance to the State government to succeed in stopping the senseless killings”.

“The killings must stop and the security agencies have the President’s support to do this as quickly as possible”.

“Whipping up hate may captivate the public and score political points on social media, but it will not bring an end to the crisis. Let every stakeholder instead sit down with the government and security forces and carry everyone along in finding an all-embracing solution”.

“As a father, a military General and a statesman, President Buhari has maintained lasting relationships with Nigerians, Muslims and Christians among every ethnic group. It is also a known fact that the young people who trek the whole distance of thousands of kilometers tending the cattle do not own the cattle. In fact many of the cattle are not owned by Fulanis or Muslims. The point is that it is too simplistic to see the conflict as ethnic or religious”.
