Sallah: FCT parks, recreation centres filled with fun-seekers

Parks and recreational centres in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) yesterday recorded a huge turnout of fun seekers despite the economic hardship in the country.

A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) report said that the Millennium Park, the Jabi Lake and other amusement centres recorded unusual throng of fun seekers who gathered in clusters with their family members and friends.

Some of the picnickers told NAN that there was the need to celebrate the season, irrespective of the prevailing economic recession, since it comes once in a year.

Mr. Mohammed Haruna, who was at the Millennium Park with his wife and children, told NAN that he had to plan and make some sacrifices to make the day enjoyable and memorable as well.

“Celebration of Sallah is a matter of planning and cutting your coat according to your cloth to make the day interesting.

“There is no doubt that there are school fees to be  paid  and other family needs as well, but we have to enjoy Sallah because it does not come every day.”

Also, Miss Olamide Akiode, a nine-year-old pupil who visited the park with her siblings, commended her parents and others for making necessary financial provisions for the day.

“I am very happy to come here and play with other children for the Sallah holiday.

“I appreciate every parent who decided to bring their children here to have fun because the times are really hard,” Olamide said.

She prayed for peace and progress of Nigeria, as she looked forward to more Sallah celebrations in the future.

Mrs. Ebere Eze, a snacks’ vendor at the Millennium Park, expressed happiness for increased sales, adding that she had earlier thought the current economic realities would affect the turnout of visitors to the park.

“Nigerians are really trying to adjust and manage despite the recession, because even with the general cry of ‘no money’, people still have time to come and enjoy here.”

Mrs Hassana Adamu, who visited the Jabi Lake with her family, said it was meant to unwind from the busy daily routine of work and other economic exigencies.

She said she needed to bring her family to celebrate in spite of the hard economic situation.

“I don’t have a choice but to bring my family to come and celebrate the Sallah outside the home because that is what we owe our families.

“Although, there is no much funds in circulation in the country, but we must celebrate Sallah,” she said.

However, Mr Ahmad Jibril, who also visited the Millennium Park with his family, said the Sallah period should also be a time to show love to ones’ neighbours.

He, therefore, called on Nigerians to imbibe the virtues of love and religious tolerance to build a peaceful and united nation.

“The message of Eid-el-Kabir is the message of sacrifice and love for God and man, therefore Muslims and non-Muslims alike should use this period for sober reflections.

“I also call on everybody to support and pray for good health for President Muhammadu Buhari as he strives to lead the nation out its many challenges,” Jibril said.

The Officer in Charge of Suntan Beach, Mr Stanley Hungbo, attributed the large turn out to the safety of the beach and the patriotism of Nigerians.
He said the beach had not witnessed any mishap for over a year.
