  • Stray bullets kill two mothers at funeral in Edo

Stray bullets from a policeman’s gun at the weekend killed two nursing mothers at the funeral of an indigene, Mr Itu Joseph, at Ivhiokhile Quarters of Fugar, headquarters of Etsako Central Local Government Area of Edo State.

The policeman and his colleagues were said to have accompanied a traditional ruler in Uzaire clan, Imonike Omogbai, to the event.

But one of them, whose identity could not be ascertained, reportedly started “shooting” without reason.

A two-month-old baby strapped to the back of one of the victims, Mrs Sandra Imhaku, was almost hit. The bullet that hit its mother on the neck was few inches from the baby.

The late Mrs Imhaku was said to have lost her husband last year when she was expecting the baby.

She was rushed to Irrua Specialist Hospital, where she died on Sunday morning.

The other victim, simply identified as Mrs. Saliu, an indigene of Fugar, reportedly came from Warri, Delta State, with her husband to attend the funeral of her in-law, Mr. Joseph.

She was said to have collapsed and died instantly, following the gunshot.

It was learnt that the policeman held a rifle with one hand and attempted to open the car door for the monarch with the other hand.

His gun was said to have started firing; the innocent women were hit, as guests were leaving the venue.

A source said the policemen were almost lynched by the mob.

A cousin of one of the victims, Mike Imhaku, said the incident had been reported at the Auchi Police Division.

Police Commissioner Samuel Adegbuyi, who confirmed the incident, said a case of accidental discharge in which two women were killed, was reported to him on Saturday.

He said the police officer had been arrested, adding that investigation into the incident had begun.

  • Bobbi Kristina: Angry discussions over funeral plans

Bobbi Kristina: Angry discussions over funeral plans

•As foul play investigations targets boyfriend

As the life of late Whitney Houston’s daughter, Bobbi Kristina, hangs in the balance, the family is discussing funeral plans, even as the Browns are said to be preparing for war, because of the way they were treated when Whitney Houston died.

Sources connected with the Brown family told TMZ, they are a united front to this extent and will refuse to be disrespected the way they feel they were at Whitney’s funeral.

It will be recalled that Bobby Brown stormed out of the funeral after security refused to let him sit with Bobbi Kristina during the service. There are indications the feud has already reignited, as the Houston family security set up a perimeter around Bobbi Kristina’s room shortly after she was taken to the hospital and there was a passcode to gain entrance. Many people in the Brown family were not given the code and it caused uproar.

“If something happens to Bobbi Kristina, we will not be treated like children,” said a member of the Brown family.

Despite being shunned in these areas, the fate of Bobbi Kristina lies in Bobby Brown’s hand, as he reserves the decision to either continue to keep his daughter on life-support or let her pass away.

But Bobby Brown was quoted as saying he “can’t pull the plug” that holds Bobbi Kristina’s life, hoping that God will save her.

Bobby’s feelings are not shared by doctors, who have advised him she will not improve and pulling life-support is an appropriate action. But Brown and his family believe doctors cannot account for miracles, which the family has seen before.

Meanwhile, a foul play criminal investigation is ongoing, with accusing fingers pointing at Bobbi Kristina’s boyfriend, Nick Gordon.

Law enforcement sources have said that Bobbi Kristina had certain injuries that have piqued their interest. The suspicion followed a history of violence between Bobbi Kristina and Gordon.

Police are said to be looking into a possible altercation more than an hour before Bobbi Kristina was found submerged in a bathtub.

Max Lomas, the friend who discovered Bobbi Kristina in the tub, arrived at around 9am that Saturday. He said he hung out with Nick but did not see Bobbi Kristina. He was told she was in the bedroom. Nick wandered away and Max said he didn’t pay attention to his whereabouts.

The cable guy showed sometime after 10am and Max said he let him in – Nick was nowhere to be seen. The cable guy said he needed access to the bedroom so Max let him in and discovered Bobbi Kristina in the tub. He screamed for Nick, who ran in and administered CPR.

Max claimed Nick allegedly cleaned up the home and removed blood stains.

The police interviewed both Max and Nick and they want to debrief Max again, but law enforcement sources say Max’s lawyer insisted on immunity before he spoke again. As at Friday morning, Max hadn’t gotten immunity or talked to the cops.

  • Funeral for bishop October 7

The Catholic Church in Anambra State has fixed October 7 for the funeral of its former Bishop of Awka, Simon Okafor, who died on August 29. He was 80.

The church has declared a month of prayers in honour of the late cleric, who was in charge of Awka Diocese from 1994 to 2009.

Addressing reporters yesterday in Awka, the state capital, at the Saint Patrick’s Cathedral, the Catholic Bishop of Awka, Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor said the prayer session had been fixed because the late cleric always told them to continue praying for him.

The funeral would be presided over by Francis Cardinal Arinze with over 10 other bishops around him, according to Ezeokafor.

The late Okafor, who battled diabetics and malaria for a long time, hailed from Ifite Dunu in Njikoka Local Government Area.

Ezeokafor said: “We believe his good works will follow him and we know that God will grant him eternal rest. We will not stop praying for him as he wished, even on his sick bed.”

Okafor, the cleric said, finished his launch on that fateful day and was in steady.

But he suddenly fell into a coma, Ezeokafor said.

According to him, the bishop died when he was being rushed to the hospital in Awka.

“He carried his cross, like Jesus Christ did. He really suffered like Christ. We will continue to pray for him,” Ezeokafor said.

  • Mourners gather in St. Louis for Brown funeral

Hundreds of people lined up in sweltering heat yesterday to say goodbye to Michael Brown, the 18-year-old shot and killed earlier this month in a confrontation with a police officer that fueled almost two weeks of street protests.

More than an hour before Brown’s funeral was to begin, a steady stream of people started filing into the Friendly Temple Missionary Baptist Church in St. Louis. Among them was Will Acklin, a black man from Little Rock, Arkansas.

Brown was unarmed when he was shot Aug. 9 by officer Darren Wilson, who is white. A grand jury is considering evidence in the case, and a federal investigation is also underway.

Police have said a scuffle broke out after Wilson told Brown and a friend to move out of the street and onto a sidewalk. Police said Wilson was pushed into his squad car and physically assaulted. Some witnesses have reported seeing Brown’s arms in the air — an act of surrender. An autopsy found Brown was shot at least six times.Family and friends say Brown was an aspiring rapper with a gentle, joking manner who dubbed himself “Big Mike.” He was good at fixing things, liked computer games, the rapper Lil Wayne, Drake, the movie “Grown Ups 2,” and the TV show “Family Guy.”

Brown’s great uncle, pastor Charles Ewing, was to deliver the eulogy at Friendly Temple Missionary Baptist Church. The Rev. Al Sharpton was also expected to speak.

President Barack Obama is sending three White House aides.

    Sokoto loses 70-year-old pilgrim

The death of a 70-year-old, Ahmadu Achida from Wurno Local Government Area of Sokoto State, has tempered the excitement of the state’s pilgrims after the Aliyu Wamakko administration donated N56m to the Holy Land visitors.

The septuagenarian died at Muna two days after observing the Arafat, the chairman of the Publicity Committee of the state’s 2013 delegation, Labaran Dundaye, told Newsextra in a telephone interview.

Dundaye, who is also the chairman of the Sokoto State council of the Nigerian Union of Journalists (NUJ), said the deceased died after a brief illness.

“The incident took place at Muna, near Makkah, two days after the Arafat, after Achida complained of minor body pains and other discomforts,” he said.

“Shortly after, he was confirmed dead. So far, he was the only pilgrim from the state who died during this year’s hajj.

“His remains have since been buried by the Saudi authorities at Makkah, after a funeral prayer at the Grand Mosque, the Ka’abah.

“The family of the deceased have been informed about his demise,” he said.

Dundaye said that the remaining pilgrims were hale and hearty.

The governor’s donation did much to lift the spirits of the pilgrims but the death brought considerable despair.

The state has 6,170 pilgrims in this year’s hajj.

The state’s publicity committee sub-chairman on the 2013 hajj, Dundaye, said the donation was announced by the leader of the delegation (Amirul Hajj), Senator Jubril Gada, in Makkah.

Dundaye said: “Wamakko made the donation when he visited the office of the state’s Pilgrim’s Welfare Agency, Makkah,” he added.

Dundaye said each of the 6,170 pilgrims got 200 Saudi Riyals, equivalent of about N 9,000.

“The gesture was an annual exercise being extended to the state’s pilgrims by Wamakko to alleviate their sufferings and to assist the beneficiaries to augment their usually-exhausted basic travelling allowances.

“The distribution of the money was done between October 17 and 18, and all the pilgrims had received their shares,” he said.

Accordingly, Wamakko was quoted as commending the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) for making excellent arrangements which helped in ensuring the success of the 2013 Hajj exercise.

“Nigeria has made good arrangements in this direction and the pilgrims had prayed for sustainable peace and unity of the country during the hajj.

“There is no compromise about the unity and peace of Nigeria, and these fervent prayers would be sustained even after the current hajj exercise,” Wamakko was further quoted.

The governor, according to Dundaye, also commended the state’s Pilgrims’ Welfare Agency, members of the hajj delegation and the state’s pilgrims for exhibiting a high sense of commitment and patriotism.

Governor Wamakko had also performed the just-concluded hajj exercise as the special guest of the Saudi Arabian authorities.

The leader of the state’s delegation, Senator Jubril Gada and the chairman of the Pilgrims’ Welfare Agency, Alhaji Muntari Maigona, all attributed the success of their assignment to the unwavering commitment, support and cooperation of Wamakko to the welfare and comfort of the pilgrims.

However, the annual hajj exercise has been concluded after the 3-day symbolic stoning of the devil at Jamrat, Muna, between 10th Zul-Hijjah to 12th Zul-Hijjah.
