  • Court saves 11-year-old marriage from collapse

An Ikorodu Customary Court in Lagos, on Monday, reconciled a couple, Peter Obaze and his wife, Chiamaka, whose 11-year-old marriage was on the verge of collapse.

Obaze, 47, a marine engineer, had instituted a divorce suit in March, claiming that his wife was not supportive, unproductive and lazy.

“My wife is too lazy, she became lazy after our first child, I have wanted her to start a business; even his brother gave her money to earn a living but she could not.

“She always provokes me to make me angry and she does not take good care of me.

“I am not interested in the marriage anymore; please separate us,” the petitioner, who resides at Oriokuta St., Ogijo in Ikorodu, told the court.

Chiamaka, 40, a mother of three and a trader, had earlier pleaded with the court for reconciliation, and pledged to mend her ways.

However, following the intervention of the court, presided over by Mrs Funmi Adeola and the couple’s families, they were reconciled.

The husband also wrote a withdrawal of case letter to the court and told them that they would work to resolve their differences and reconcile themselves.

Adeola ordered that Chimaka should sign an undertaking that she would be a good housewife, promise to be productive, supportive and respectful.

“The undertaking would also indicate that you will now be supportive and also help your husband build a bright future for your children,” she said.

  • Court dissolves 30-year-old marriage over abandonment, church beliefs

An Ikorodu Customary Court in Lagos, on Friday dissolved a 30-year-old marriage between a Civil Servant, Virginia Ugwuja and her husband, Emmanuel, a retired police officer, over irreconcilable differences.

The 49-year-old petitioner told the court that her estranged husband, who is a pastor, accused her of being possessed by an “evil spirit”.

“Since he heard from the church that I possessed an evil spirit, he started denying me conjugal rights and abandoned me and our eight children, five years ago.

“He also gave the two houses we jointly owned to his church ( The Lord’s Chosen Charismatic Church ), saying that the buildings belonged to God,’’ Virginia said.

The petitioner, who resides at Odun Ifa Str., Adeniji Adele, Lagos, had in 2017 sought the dissolution of the marriage over allegations of abandonment, denial of conjugal rights and irresponsibility.

She accused the respondent’s church of being the originator of the problems in their marriage.

Virginia said that prophecies from the church accusing her of possessing an evil spirit were responsible to the disaffection between her and her husband.

In his response, the 54-year-old husband admitted the petitioner’s allegations and asked the court to dissolve the union.

Dissolving the marriage, the Court President, Mrs Funmi Adeola, said that it had broken down irretrievably as evidence from the couple have proved that there was no more love in the union.

Adeola said that the husband’s church contributed greatly to the break down of the marriage.

“It is obvious that there is no more love in the union, since evidence shows that the two houses built by the couple were donated to the church by the husband.

“Having left the house and accusing your wife of possessing an evil spirit, you are hereby ordered to pay your wife all the expenses she has spent on your eight children.

“The husband is to refund the children’s school fees of N400, 000.00, hospital bills of N235, 000.00, a feeding allowance of N350, 000.00 and a house rent of N900, 000.00, while he was away from home.

“You are also ordered to pay N20, 000 monthly as feeding allowance for the last two children who are below age 18,’’ she ruled.

Adeola ordered the respondent to return one of the houses given to the church to his wife, as they were jointly built in their names.

She, however, ruled that any violation of the court order will be severely punished by the provision of the Law.

“Anyone who is not satisfied with the ruling of this court is free to seek advice from a higher court after 30 days,” she said.

  • Court ends 30 years marriage over promiscuity

An Ikorodu Customary Court in Lagos on Thursday dissolved a 30-year-old marriage over alleged promiscuity.

The court terminated the union after the petitioner, Mr Gbeminiyi Adeyiga, 88, had insisted that he would no longer condone the infidelity of his wife, named Sekinat.

Adeyiga had pleaded with the court to dissolve the marriage forthwith, citing his wife’s unbridled promiscuity, lack of care and battery.

The President of the court, Mrs Funmi Adeola, subsequently, declared that they would no longer be husband and wife as the marriage had broken down irretrievably.

“Henceforth, you are no longer to be called husband and wife as investigation revealed that the wife truly commits the offence alleged against her.

“Having tried to settle the differences amicably, there were reports from petitioner that the respondent refuses to heed to series of advice.

“You are hereby ordered to go your separate ways and the custody of the three children should be determined by each one of them as they are above 18 years of age.

“However, the children must be jointly groomed toward a better life as your separation should not affect their upbringing,” she ruled.

Adeyiga, who reside at No. 3, Adeyiga St., off Munirat Aleje Str., in Ikorodu had told the court that his wife was sleeping with different men.

“My wife does not take care of me any longer; she does not give me good food and different men come to sleep with her in our home.

“She frustrates me, slaps me and she also wants to kill me. I don’t want to die now, please separate us,’’ he pleaded.

However, the 55-year-old Sekinat, a trader, denied the allegations made by her husband.

She said that she still loved her husband and would want the marriage to continue.

“I beg the court to settle us. He has never caught me with a man. He always suspected every move to the extent that he smells my pants whenever I go out and come back.

“I want this court to settle this matter. I am not ready for divorce.’’

However, a correspondent of the Newsmen at the court reports that the plea was too little too late as the court went ahead and terminated the relationship.

Imoohi, presently unemployed, told the court that he was no longer interested in the four-year-old marriage which is blessed with one child.

The husband, who lives at Agbede Transformer, Agric Road in Ikorodu, described his fifth wife as a drunk and a trouble maker.

“I am no longer in love with her; please separate us,” the petitioner pleaded with the court.

Responding, the 35-year-old wife, Sarah, who is also unemployed, denied the claims and accused her husband of taking her to the beer parlour where she drinks.

“My husband is not saying the truth; I don’t drink the way he described me; I drink only when I follow him to beer parlour.

“My husband is a flirt and any money he has will be spent on other women. He sometimes asks me if he can still marry his ex-wife.

“He wants to divorce me so he can marry another wife; please I pray for settlement, “she said.

The Court President, Mrs Funmi Adeola ordered the couple to remain at peace while the court investigates the matter.

She also ordered the husband to pay N3,000 feeding allowance for their child through the court.

Areola adjourned the case until Feb. 20 for continued hearing or judgment.
