  • Monarch praises Fuoye VC

Traditional council of Ikole Kingdom led by its paramount ruler, Oba Ajibade Adewunmi Fashiku, has paid a courtesy call on the Vice Chancellor, Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) Ekiti State Prof. Kayode Soremekun.

Speaking on behalf of the delegation, Oba Fashiku  said the visit was to felicitate with Soremekun on the newly completed administrative complex as well as development strides under his administration.

The monarch, who was also in company of his entourage, stated that his domain requires more of the university’s presence, especially in areas of more establishment of faculties at Ikole campus. He added that the traditional institution and the entire people of Ikole kingdom are ready to render all necessary support to the institution. This, according to him, is reflected in their donation of 350KVA generator to Ikole campus of the university.

Soremekun assured that his administration would continue to operate open door policy. He also appreciated the visitors for their unrelenting support to the university.

Soremekun described their request for more visibility at Ikole campus as ‘legitimate’.

Nonetheless, he said such issues were broad based policies which require the consideration of the institution’s Governing Council.

  • Ekiti 2018: Fayose, FUOYE VC trade words over alleged ‘rigging’ plot

EKITI State governor, Ayo Fayose, and the Vice Chancellor of the Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Prof. Kayode Soremekun, on Friday, traded words over alleged plot to rig the July 14 governorship election.

Fayose alleged that Soremekun has lent himself to be used by the ruling party in Nigeria, the All Progressives Congress (APC), and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), by recruiting students of his institution to serve as ad hoc staff at the poll rather than youth corps members.

The governor alleged that Soremekun is a card-carrying member of the APC and a close ally of the party’s governorship candidate in the forthcoming election, Kayode Fayemi.

He alleged that the VC had rigged elections for the APC in the past. Fayose who spoke with reporters in Ado-Ekiti yesterday, alleged that over 2,000 FUOYE students had been registered as ad hoc staff under Soremekun’s watch.

He claimed they have been ordered to supply bank details of their close relations, so that payments would not be directly linked to them.

Fayose said: “The idea behind this plot is to recruit APC members from neighbouring States, arm them with FUOYE student identity cards and use them as INEC Presiding and Returning Officers to perfect the planned rigging of the election.

This will fail.” “Today, we are beginning to receive signals to the effect that clandestine moves are being made to subvert the will of Ekiti people. With the failure of their “Ondo Option”, other evil means are now being devised.

“Despite that we have over 9,000 Youth Corps members in Ekiti State and it has been the general practice to engage the NYSC members in elections across the country, the APC in collusion with INEC have asked that students of FUOYE be recruited as INEC ad-hoc staff for the election, instead of youth corps members.

“We are in possession of an Internal Memorandum from the office of the Dean of Students Affairs, FUOYE seeking registration of students of the University as INEC Presiding and Returning Officers for the Election.

But Soremekun who denied the governor’s allegation, described it as “blatant falsehood” stressing that INEC is the agency in charge of recruiting ad hoc staff for the elections.

The Ogun State born university administrator who also denied being an APC card-carrying member said this would not be the first time that Fayose had attempted to blackmail him.

Soremekun said the Ekiti governor had attacked him over his refusal to assist his (Fayose’s) party (PDP) at the September 2016 Edo State governorship election, where he (Soremekun) served as the chief returning officer.

  • FUOYE VC gets high marks on projects

A Coalition of Civil Society Groups has scored the Vice Chancellor of Federal University, Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Prof. Kayode Soremekun, high on execution of capital projects.

Acting under the aegis of the Civil Society Groups for Good Governance, the activists visited the university to ascertain whether funds earmarked for them were well utilised.

Led by Mr. Olufemi Lawson, secretary, Movement Against Corruption (MAC), the group visited projects, including the Central Administration Building (over 80 per cent completed); 500-seater lecture theatre built with Internally-Generated Revenue (IGR); 3-in-1 Central Laboratory and the Multipurpose Arts Theatre.

Lawson said their mission was to clarify allegations against the institution in a petition to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), copy of which came to the body in respect of breaches of procurement and contract award procedures.

The activists said the visit was in line with the Federal Government’s campaign for transparency and accountability as citadels of learning should be models in fighting graft.

Lawson’s words: “This visit is not about exposing or witch-hunting anyone. It is about the integrity of Nigerian education system.

“In all fairness, the impression I had was the conventional Nigerian university at the early stages of development, still battling with makeshift structures. But here I met a very well advanced Institution.

“I have been to other similar institutions, but here you have structures that you can put forward anywhere and they will stand as evidences of achievement and performance.”

Responding, Soremekun said infrastructure deficit would be closed faster if the IGR was being applied in the direction.

He said it would not be proper to abandon such critical projects, still at the early stages because of paucity of finances.

The VC stressed that his administration adhered strictly to procurement rules, with all contracts going through normal processes before being awarded on the basis of competence and track record of performance.

Other members of the delegation were Mr. Muktar Akosile, President, Africa Youth Patriotic and Development Mission (AVPDM); Basat Mohammed, Director of Communications, Transparency and Accountability Initiatives; Nelson Osaieze, Executive Director, African Leadership Strategy and Transparency Development Initiative; Lilian Cosmos, Network of Young Female Leaders of Excess Community; Omokhagbor Michael, Bureau of Public Service Initiative; and Olubayo Fisayo, Public Service Watch.
