    • …lauds Prof. Fasina’s transformative leadership

The Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) and its Governing Council have endorsed a 25-year transformation agenda that positions the institution to become a digitally driven, entrepreneurially oriented, and globally connected university.

The consensus was reached during a two-day Council–Management Strategic Retreat held at Elomaz Hotel, Lagos, where participants affirmed that the path to long-term relevance requires a comprehensive shift in academic delivery, institutional culture, and operational systems.

According to a statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Foluso Ogunmodede, the retreat also emphasised strengthening FUOYE’s financial sustainability through diversified revenue streams, including endowments, alumni contributions, public-private partnerships, grants, and enterprise-based income initiatives, while maintaining affordability and broad access for students.

At the retreat entitled, “FUOYE beyond today: Strategic Alignment, Governance, Partnerships and Financial Sustainability for the next 25 years –2025-2050,” the management of the institution lauded FUOYE outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina for demonstrating what was described as “commendable leadership throughout his tenure during which the university recorded significant milestones in academic development, research visibility, infrastructural expansion and overall institutional strengthening.”

Prof Fasina was specifically commended for his contributions to the growth and stability of Federal University Oye Ekiti since he joined it about five years ago.

Also praised was the incoming Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Joshua Olalekan Ogunwole, especially his seamless, transparent, and credible appointment, which was widely recognised as a model for good governance and due process in university administration.

Although both the outgoing and the incoming Vice-Chancellors were actively involved in the initiation and development of FUOYE’s 25-year strategic plan, a factor considered critical for leadership continuity, institutional stability, and the smooth and effective implementation, the proposed 25-year strategic plan would provide a realistic, phased, and costed roadmap for FUOYE’s future development.

However, in a communique, the Council-Management resolved to work collaboratively with a view to ensuring that FUOYE by 2050 would stand amongst the world’s leading universities, digitally empowered, financially sustainable, ethically grounded, and socially responsive.

    Accordingly, they resolved amongst others, that, “The Federal University Oye Ekiti would deliberately transition into a digitally driven, entrepreneurially oriented and globally connected university over the next twenty-five years in line with the vision articulated in the strategic plan;

“The university shall strengthen financial sustainability and resilience through the diversification of revenue sources, including endowments, alumni giving, public-private partnerships, grants, and enterprise-based income streams, while maintaining affordability and access.

“Governance systems and processes shall be reinforced to ensure clear role delineation, transparency, accountability, ethical leadership, and performance-based management across all levels of the university; and

“Risk management, campus safety, and institutional resilience shall be mainstreamed into strategic planning and operational decision-making to safeguard the university’s stability, reputation, and long-term sustainability.

Protest rocks FUOYE as NYCN demands VC’s suspension

Hundreds of protesters led by members of the National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN) and the Southern Nigeria Youth Congress (SNYC) on Monday staged a protest at the Federal University,Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) over allegations of  abuse of office against the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Fasina.

The demonstrators, who stormed the university campus in  large numbers, carried placards with inscriptions such as “Professor Fasina must go,” “Stop the rot in FUOYE,” “FUOYE must be rescued now,” and “Ndoma-Egba must not impose a successor.”

Addressing journalists during the mass protest, the NYCN Chairman, Ekiti chapter, Comrade Segun Bankole, alleged the Chairman of university’s Governing Council, Senator Ndoma-Egba, and the Vice-Chancellor had turned the university into a theatre of corruption, impunity and moral decay.

Bankole, who said that the groups had submitted a petition to President Bola Tinubu and copied anti-corruption and regulatory agencies, said the university had been “hijacked by a cabal” that had weaponised governance for personal enrichment.

Bankole accused the Pro-Chancellor of flouting ministerial directives by moving all Council meetings and the ongoing Vice-Chancellorship selection process to Abuja, a move he claimed had resulted in the waste of millions of naira on travels and allowances.

He accused the Governing Council of turning the institution into a “feeding trough, claiming that university officials had converted the university’s resources into personal wealth while  neglecting academic and infrastructural growth and development.

Bankole claimed that contracts were being awarded without due process, financial transactions were shrouded in secrecy and the welfare of staff and students had been relegated to the background.

The NYCN chairman also lamented the marginalisation of Ekiti indigenes in the institution’s workforce, alleging  that many were only  engaged as contract staff on meagre stipends.

The Ekiti Chairman of SNYC, Comr. Emmanuel Aladejare, questioned  the approval of N128 million for a research leave for the Vice-Chancellor, describing it as a “gross aberration, misnomer and unheard of in academic history”.

Aladejare alleged  suspicious property acquisitions worth over N700m  by top university officials, saying the institution has been reduced to a breeding ground for financial recklessness, nepotism and administrative impunity with the council allegedly prioritising self-interest over transparency and accountability.

Aladejare also condemned the ongoing Vice-Chancellorship selection process, describing it as a predetermined exercise structured to produce a successor who would continue cycle of corruption and impunity that has plagued the institution.

He alleged that the timetable released by the Governing Council was deliberately compressed to prevent proper scrutiny of  applicants and ensure the emergence of a candidate loyal to the outgoing management.

The protesters demanded the immediate suspension of Professor Fasina pending investigation, the removal of Senator Ndoma-Egba as Pro-Chancellor and Council Chairman, and the suspension of the current selection process for a new Vice-Chancellor.

They also called for the constitution of an independent, non-partisan panel to probe allegations of sexual harassment on campus and ensure justice for victims.

Other demands include: establishment of a neutral interim governing council to restore lawful governance, a full forensic audit of FUOYE’s finances, property acquisitions and Council expenditures since 2021, immediate return of Council activities to the FUOYE campus and legal protection for whistleblowers; as well as anti-corruption advocates within the university community.

They urged Tinubu to take decisive action, insisting that only firm, transparent and immediate intervention can prevent the total collapse of FUOYE.

NYCN threatens protest against FUOYE’s VC

The National Youth Council of Nigeria (NYCN), Ekiti Chapter, has vowed to embark on a mass protest at the main campus of Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), on Monday November 3, 2025 over allegations of abuse of office against the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Prof. Abayomi Sunday Fasina.

Announcing this in a statement jointly signed by the Chairman of the chapter and General Secretary, Comrades Segun Bankole and Silas Olawale respectfully, NYCN said its Ekiti office would be temporarily relocated to the main campus of FUOYE to prosecute the protest until the demands of young people in the State are met.

The Youth Council said the Monday protest is coming after exhausting all official channels, noting that NYCN Ekiti Chapter had submitted a detailed petition to the Presidency, relevant ministries, and national anti-corruption and security agencies, exposing the “corruption and moral decay threatening Federal University Oye-Ekiti”.

NYCN in the statement insisted on its demands for non-negotiable suspension of Prof. Fasina and removal of Sen. Victor Ndoma-Egba (SAN) as Council Chairman.

The Council also called for an independent investigation of all sexual abuse cases and prosecution of offenders, suspension of the current Vice Chancellorship selection process and forensic audit of FUOYE finances since 2021 as well as restoration of lawful governance and protection for whistleblowers.

“This peaceful protest is to show President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as visitor to FUOYE, that Nigerian youth will not tolerate corruption, moral decay, or injustice in our institutions,” NYCN added.

Parts of the statement read: “We have waited long enough. The time for action is now. Effective Monday, 3rd November 2025, NYCN Ekiti will relocate its operational headquarters to FUOYE Main Campus.

“We will remain there in peaceful mass protest until our demands are met. We call on all Nigerian youth, students, and civil society groups to join us to end impunity and restore integrity in FUOYE.”

FUOYE denies VC’s involvement in SSANU’s members arrest

Management of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti, has refuted allegations by the institution’s chapter of the Senior Staff Association of the Nigerian Universities (SSANU) that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abayomi Fasina, was behind the arrest and detention of some of its executives.

The university, in a statement by the Registrar, Mr Ibrahim Muftau, described the claim as a deliberate falsehood and a calculated attempt to malign the reputation of the Vice-Chancellor and the image of the university.

Muftau said the claim by the SSANU leadership was misleading and entirely baseless, noting that the Vice Chancellor had no authority to  order or influence over police operations.

He explained that the police invitation that led to the bedlam originated from Office of the Assistant Commissioner of Police, State Intelligence Department, Ekiti State Command.

Dismissing the allegations of the VC’s  involvement in the arrest, the Registrar clarified that Professor Fasina was on official engagement at the Nigerian Law School, Bwari, Abuja, when the union officials were invited by the police.

Muftau said that it  was “illogical and mischievous” for anyone to associate the Vice-Chancellor with the arrest or detention of the union officials, noting that his intervention actually facilitated their release.

Quoting a police source, the Registrar stated that the SSANU officials were “unruly” during their engagement with officers, refusing to cooperate or provide written statements.

The police, he said, emphasized that the invitation was a routine  administrative exercise and that “no individual is above the law.”

Muftau, however, dismissed SSANU’s claim of harassment and intimidation of its members by the FUOYE management as unfounded, , saying the university had consistently demonstrated openness to dialogue, reconciliation, and industrial harmony.

He explained that the management had on several occasions invited the SSANU leadership to roundtable discussions to address grievances relating to welfare and working conditions, but lamented that the union’s executives had  often shunned such opportunities for peaceful resolution.

He said, the Chairman of the Governing Council, Senator Victor Ndoma-Egba, had recently sent two members of the council to attend the SSANU congress as part of ongoing peace efforts.

“It is therefore puzzling that out of the five trade unions operating on campus, only the SSANU has continued to exhibit hostility towards the Vice Chancellor and his administration, despite the university management’s consistent olive branch and open-door policy”, he added.

FUOYE VC denies ordering arrest of SSANU leaders

The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Ekiti State, Professor Abayomi Fasina, has denied ordering the arrest of the leaders of the university’s chapter of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU).

Speaking with select reporters on Monday evening, Professor Fasina said since he resumed office last Monday he has been concerned on how to achieve lasting peace on the campus despite alleged provocations from certain quarters.

He said he was out of Ekiti State when he heard that SSANU leaders were allegedly detained by the police and “I immediately called on the Police Commissioner to seek clarifications and eventually appealed for their release.”

He said there was no basis for him to call on the police to arrest anyone, insisting that what preoccupies his mind is ensuring peaceful atmosphere on the campus towards achieving smooth operation.

According to him: “Except they want to be unfair to me. As soon as I resumed office I approved the payment of the relocation allowance for these workers. About N160 million was released for that purpose. In fact, that of the academic staff is yet to be resolved. So how can I be the one responsible for any arrest again.”

He appealed to the workers and students to prioritise dialogue over violence, saying the university is bigger than anyone.

SSANU on Monday alerted the public that its leaders were arrested by the Police Command in Ekiti State, calling on stakeholders including the national leadership of the union to intervene.

According to a statement credited to the Vice Chairman of the union on the campus, Mr Olausi Simeon, five members of the union were arrested by police.

Those arrested, according to Olausi’ statement are Comrade Faleye Benjamin, who is the chairman of the chapter, and Comrades Ademola Mutiu, Oyelude Yekeen, Aluko Ayomikun, and Nwokeke Barnabas.

Olausi said the arrest was in response to a petition allegedly authored by the institution’s chief security officer as reportedly ordered by Professor Fasina.

In the statement with the title: Notice to All SSANU FUOYE Members and the University Community,” Olausi said the development was concerning and unacceptable.

He said it is a direct attack on “unionism, workers’ rights, and freedom of association as guaranteed by the Nigerian Constitution and Labour Laws.”

But Ekiti Police Public Relations Officer DSP Sunday Abutu, denied the arrest of the union leaders.

According to Abutu, the unionists were invited over “certain issues,” and were later released.

“The police did not arrest them, they were invited over certain developments, and they have been asked to go,” Abutu clarified..

FUOYE warns SSANU leaders against alleged blackmail of VC

The Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has warned the national leadership of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) led by Comrade Muhammad Haruna Ibrahim, to desist from what it described as “political blackmail and malicious propaganda” against the institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abayomi Fasina.

In a statement on Tuesday by Special Adviser on Media to the VC, Dr. Wole Balogun , the University condemned what it called SSANU’s “desperate and unrelenting smear campaign”, alleging it has resorted to spreading rumours the VC was involved in political manoeuvring ahead of the forthcoming Ekiti Governorship poll.

“Such claims are indeed laughable, unfortunate, and utterly false,” the statement reads.

“Professor Fasina is an academic and administrator of high repute, not a politician. His record of integrity and professionalism is unquestionable.”

The University described the accusations as “lies from the pit of hell”, alleging several members of SSANU’s leadership in FUOYE have been involved in acts of gross misconduct, violence and indiscipline on campus.

The statement accused some  FUOYE SSANU leaders of attempting to disrupt a peaceful meeting of staff on October 14, 2025, convened by the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council, Senator Ndoma Egba (SAN).

The University alleged violent conduct of these individuals was witnessed by other union leaders, staff members and security operatives, who even recorded video evidence of their actions

it said it was on the basis of this that security agencies, including the Nigeria Police, DSS, and Civil Defence Corps, invited the SSANU officials for questioning.

“However, reports indicate that even at the Office of the Commissioner of Police, the individuals displayed further unruly and disrespectful behaviour.

“The same characters who now parade themselves as defenders of justice have a well-documented record of insubordination and violence,” the statement continued.

“If anyone should be investigated for plans to disrupt the peace or the forthcoming elections, it should be these local SSANU leaders, not Professor Fasina.”

The University further reiterated Fasina’s record in public service remains unblemished, particularly in matters related to elections.

It cited his role as the INEC Returning Officer for the Imo State Governorship Election, it said was widely acknowledged as one of the most peaceful and transparent polls.

“Professor Fasina has always been a law-abiding, peace-loving academic. Since assuming office on 11 February 2021, several elections have been held in Ekiti State without any controversy involving him. The allegations being circulated are baseless, mischievous, and politically motivated,” the statement concluded.

The University called on the national leadership of SSANU to caution its members and put an end to further acts of political blackmail or attempts to malign the reputation of Fasina and the institution.

According to the new President, clinching 11th position among more than 300 universities in Nigeria in the latest Times Higher Education World Universities Rankings, within just 14 years of establishment, is massive, and commended the institution’s management, staff, and alumni members for what he described as a yeoman’s job done to attain the feat.

Mr Ojo said his administration will not only ensure transparency and accountability in reporting finances, activities, and decisions, but he will also ensure proper communication and engagement of members through regular newsletters, digital platforms, and dedicated feedback mechanisms “so that every alumnus could feel heard.”

He also promised to mobilise more members through the creation of state and global chapters and the provision of post-graduation support for alumni members through stronger collaborations and partnerships.

Mr Ojo said; “When I say we are ready to fly, I’m not just talking about growth, I’m talking about creating the solid financial wings that will carry our alumni association to greater heights.

“For too long, we’ve relied on one-time membership dues to fund our work. But it’s time for us to think bigger and more sustainably. That’s why, as your President, I will propose and, together with my team, fashion out a multi-faceted approach to fundraising that will ensure we are financially strong, self-sustaining, and able to fund notable developments for both the alumni body and FUOYE itself.”
