Fusengbuwa Ruling House, traditionalists protest alleged plot to impose next Awujale

Traditionalists and hundreds of members of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House of Ijebuland on Friday staged a protest over an alleged attempt by powerful interests to impose the next Awujale on the kingmakers, the Fusengbuwa family, and the broader Ijebu nation.

The protesters converged at the Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona Archway before marching to the Ijebu Ode Local Government Headquarters in Itooro, displaying placards with various inscriptions condemning what they described as undue interference in the traditional selection process.

The Awujale stool became vacant on July 13, 2025, following the death of Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who passed away at the age of 91 after a 65-year reign.

Fusengbuwa is next in line to produce the new Awujale.

However, The Nation reports that the Ogun State Government, in a circular dated January 20, 2026, directed kingmakers to suspend further steps in selecting a candidate from the 95 nominees earlier submitted by leaders of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, including Otunba Lateef Owoyemi (Olori Ebi), Prince Adedokun Ajidagba (Deputy Olori Ebi), and Professor Fassy Yusuf (Vice Chairman).

The directive, signed by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ganiyu Hamzat, has heightened allegations that the administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun is attempting to influence the succession process.

The state government has, however, denied any intention to impose a candidate.

Unconvinced by the government’s explanation for halting the process, members of the Fusengbuwa royal family and supporting traditionalists marched through Odo-Egbo, Itale, and Palace Road before ending the peaceful protest at the Itooro Local Government Headquarters, where they were received by the council chairman, Dare Alebiosu.

Some of their placards read, “Fusengbuwa say no to imposition. Let Ifa oracle determine the next Awujale,” and “Let the kingmakers do their job, we say no to imposition.”

Mrs Adejugba Obileye, who led the protest, said that they elected to storm the local government and register their displeasure over the alleged plot by the state government to hijack the process and impose a candidate on the kingmakers.

Speaking on behalf of the family, she called for the opening of the palace and urged the government to steer away from any imposition plot.

Obileye, who is also the Aremobinrin Jadiara, a unit of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, said that the Fusengbuwa is the next in line to fill the vacant Awujale’s stool, wondering why the selection process was put in abeyance for the second time within a month when the kingmakers were already doing what was expected of them traditionally and in line with the extant laws.

She cautioned that the stool of Awujale is sacred and not to be sacrificed on the altar of politics or any pecuniary gains.

Obileye said, “We are at the Ijebu Ode Local Government secretariat to register our displeasure over the closure of the palace and the alleged plan to impose on us the next Awujale of Ijebu land.

“We are here to say that the Fusengbuwa ruling house is saying no and rejects any plan of imposition for the ongoing selection process of Awujale. The Awujale stool is sacred; it is not to be filled as a result of one political consideration or another.

“We don’t want political Awujale. The Ijebu kingdom has a rich cultural heritage that should not be bastardized by anyone. We have an Ifa oracle in our family, so the government should allow the Ifa oracle to pick the right candidate for us and not just impose anyone; they should not impose any foreigner on us.

“The government should desist from any planned imposition. They should allow the kingmakers to do their job; we are not fighting with the government, but they should not interfere unnecessarily in the ongoing selection process of the new Awujale.”

Also speaking, Olubunmi Adesanya, another member of the ruling house, also called on the government not to impose the next Awujale on the family, but rather allow Ifa oracle and the kingmakers do their job.

Adesanya said, “We are here to plead with the government not to impose the next Awujale on us. The government should allow the kingmakers to do their job; they should allow the Ifa oracle to pick the next Awujale for us. We reject imposition in all ways, and we plead with our chairman to help us convey our request to the government.”

Also speaking on behalf of the traditionalists, High Chief Adekunle Talabi, the Obajelu, Olumoko of Imoko, a priest of the Agemo masquerade, also urged the government to distance itself from the alleged imposition plan.

High Chief Talabi explained that “I just want to urge our governor to allow the right thing to be done, there should be nothing like imposition, it is not acceptable. The government should allow the ruling house, the Fusengbuwa, and the kingmakers to pick the next Awujale.

“The traditionalists are also not happy with the rumoured plan by the government to impose a candidate; we beg the government to shelve this plan and let things be done as it is laid down from time immemorial.”

However, addressing the protesters, the Chairman of the local government, Dare Alebiosu, refuted the alleged plan by the government to foist a candidate on the kingmakers or the Fusengbuwa family.

“The palace has since been opened, I am aware of what. However, on the alleged imposition plan by the government, I want to assure you that there is nothing like that, but I will certainly convey your request to the seat of authority in Abeokuta.

“The government is not interested in interfering with the selection of the next Awujale; that is the job for the kingmakers to do, and the government will certainly not hinder them from doing their jobs.

“However, I want to urge you to go back home and not allow your peaceful protest to be hijacked by the hoodlums. I have heard your request, and I will certainly ensure that the governor gets to hear of your concerns,” he said.

Oracle-endorsed prince emerges among 95 nominees for Awujale throne – Fusengbuwa

A prince identified by the Oracle (Ifa) as the most suitable successor to the late Awujale of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, has emerged among the 95 nominees screened on Monday in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.

The Olori-Ebi of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, Otunba Lateef Owoyemi, disclosed the development shortly after the conclusion of the nomination exercise at the Bisirodipe Hall, GRA, Ijebu-Ode.

He expressed confidence that the kingmakers and the Ogun State government would select a candidate who aligns with the aspirations of the ruling house, the ancestors, and the divine guidance revealed through Ifa.

Among the 95 nominees are Princess Oluwakemi Adetokunboh; Prince Adebisi Kadiri, a retired Lagos State Permanent Secretary; Prince Abdul-Fatai Arowolo of Aeron Construction; Prince Olumuyiwa Adeyemi; Prince Okeowo Obafemi; and Prince Adegbenga Bakare.

Owoyemi, who also serves as Otunba Jadiara of Ijebuland and is a former President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), said the royal family conducted extensive traditional consultations before resolving to back one of the nominees. He declined to reveal the chosen name.

The list of all 95 nominees was jointly endorsed by Otunba Owoyemi; his deputy, Prince Adedokun Ajidagba; Vice Chairman, Professor Fassy Yusuf; and Secretary of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House, Pastor Bolarinde Salami. Representatives of the Ijebu-Ode Local Government, led by the Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. Adebanjo Oke, witnessed the process.

Describing the nomination exercise as peaceful and transparent, Owoyemi said it was a collective victory for the entire ruling house. He added that a new Awujale is expected to emerge within a month, noting that all contenders have signed undertakings not to challenge the selection outcome in court.

Owoyemi said, “We have successfully, peacefully, and harmoniously nominated 95 candidates today. Now it’s in the hands of the kingmakers to do their work and select one of them for us. We in the Fusengbuwa ruling house have done a lot of traditional research through the oracles to guide us on what’s going to happen. And the one spoken by the Oracle is among the nominees.

“And we have no doubt at all that the king makers are going to select the person that the Almighty God himself has appointed, the one that our ancestors have also blessed.

“It’s a win-win for everybody because even those who may not be appointed the king will serve in the palace by the grace of God. Everyone who applied has a document guaranteeing that no matter what, there will be no litigation. So, we can be so rest assured that by the grace of Almighty God, we are going to be very, very happy.

“We know the government is going to do the right thing and support what the family supports… And God will guide them right… So that they pick for us the Awujale that, I’m told, will make Ijebu the biggest, greatest city in the whole of Africa. I’m not going to talk about the person the family supports now because you saw us nominating 95 of them… We support one of them.

“So, we are hopeful that the Kingmakers and the government select the best person for us. And we know they will not make any mistakes.”

Ogun govt assures Fusengbuwa ruling house of fair process in Awujale selection

The Ogun State government has assured the Fusengbuwa ruling house of Ijebu-Ode that it will not allow intruders or outsiders to interfere in the process of selecting the next Awujale of Ijebuland.

Speaking on Tuesday, the Chairman of Ijebu-Ode Local Government, Hon. Dare Alebiosu, said the Fusengbuwa ruling house has capable princes to handle its internal affairs, stressing that other ruling houses would not be allowed to meddle in the succession process.

Alebiosu gave the assurance during a courtesy visit to his office in Itoro by elders of the Fusengbuwa ruling house, including three monarchs: the Dagburewe of Idowa, Oba (Barr.) Sikiru Okuribido, the Saderiren of Isonyin-Ijebu, Oba Abdul-Rasheed Salami; and the Onirete of Irete, Oba Abdul-Ganiyu Awokoya Yusuf.

Responding to a formal request by the Fusengbuwa Olori-Ebi, Otunba Lateef Adebayo Owoyemi, for government intervention to stop other ruling houses from meddling, Alebiosu said, “Government won’t allow or encourage any unbecoming act.”

He further emphasized that Ijebu-Ode is not a “Banana republic” and pledged to convey the ruling house’s concerns to the Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun.

Alebiosu said, “I heard you saying that some other ruling houses are trying to interfere or meddle in the affairs of Fusengbuwa or engage in some kind of smear campaign. I want to assure you that the government is on top of everything, and we won’t allow or encourage any unbecoming act; this is not a banana republic.

“And so we won’t allow anything of such to happen, I will report back to the Governor. We won’t allow any interloper; each ruling house has its turn, and now it is the turn of Fusengbuwa, so no interloper will be allowed. The Fusengbuwa has lots of capable people, so we will ensure that the right thing is done. I will study all your documents and get back to you when I am back in town.”

Speaking earlier, Olori-Ebi of Fusengbuwa ruling house, Otunba Owoyemi commended Governor Abiodun for successfully setting up an Administrative Board of highly eminent and credible Ijebu-Ode High Chiefs, to pilot and oversee the Awujale Palace affairs and responsibilities over the entire Ijebu people, pending the successful appointment and enthronement of the 59 Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebu Land.

The former President of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) used the avenue to passionately appeal to the government to convene an urgent meeting of three other Awujale Ruling Houses – Fidipote, Gbelegbuwa, and Anikilaya – and prevail on them to leave members of the Fusengbuwa Ruling House alone to resolve their differences by themselves.

Otunba Owoyemi said, “We would also appeal to you to please convene an urgent meeting with the leaders of the three other Awujale Ruling Houses, Fidipote, Gbelegbuwa, and Anikilaya, and request them to please leave us in Fusengbuwa Ruling House alone to resolve our differences ourselves, and they should please not continue to fan the embers of discord or promote the diabolical efforts being made to destabilize our Ruling House, by deliberately pouring fuel on the fire lit by a dissident unit, trying to undermine and destroy the entire family.

“Fusengbuwa Ruling House had never interfered in the affairs of any of the three Awujale sister Ruling Houses, and in the name of Almighty God and reverence for our noble ancestors, stop meddling in the affairs of our House, the Fusengbuwa Ruling House.

“These interlopers are unwittingly setting a very bad and dangerous precedent for others to follow in the future and with clearly foreseeable disastrous consequences.”
