  • Avoid distractions, FUTA VC advises freshers

    The Vice Chancellor, Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), Prof Joseph Fuwape, has advised freshly admitted students to be focused and not allow distractions derail them from achieving their lofty academic dreams.

    He spoke during the 36th Matriculation for over 3,629 students admitted into various programmes of the university for the 2018/2019 academic session.

    The Vice Chancellor who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Development, Prof Phillip Oguntund, urged the students to be law abiding and respect constituted authority.

    “Within the next couple of years you would be expected to go through intensive training, not only in learning but also in character to build a successful and rewarding future for yourselves.

    “Shun all forms of distractions and give diligence to studies as that is the primary reason you are here. Identify with people of great minds and chose for yourselves mentors that will add positive values to your lives among your senior colleagues,” he said.

    Fuwape reiterated FUTA’s zero tolerance for all acts inimical to peace on campus, especially thuggery, vandalism, stealing, hooliganism and cultism.

    He warned that the University would not hesitate to deal with recalcitrant offenders within the ambit of its regulations.

    If in need, Fuwape advised the students to visit the Counselling unit of the Students’ Affairs Division.

    “The Students Affairs Division of the university is your second home. Make proper use of the place whenever you have issues bothering you,” he said.

    The Registrar, Mr. Richard Arifalo, administered the matriculation oath on the students.

  • FUTA VC urges freshers to be enterprising

    Beyond being studious and obeying rules and regulations, Vice Chancellor (VC) of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Prof Adebiyi Daramola, has counselled new students to demonstrate industry, enterprise and thrift.

    Daramola spoke during the matriculation of 4,772 students admitted for the 2016/2017 academic session.

    Having scaled the hurdle to be admitted out of 19,000 candidates who applied to the university, Daramola said the students ought to work hard.

    “It is, indeed, a pride to be admitted into FUTA where you will be expected to study very hard and be certified worthy in character and learning to build a successful and rewarding future for yourselves,” he said.

    The VC urged them to key into FUTA’s vision to be a world-class university of technology and centre of excellence in teaching, research and learning; respect the matriculation oath; and shun anti-social acts.

    The Registrar, Dr Mrs. Modupe Ajayi, administered the matriculation oath on the students.

    Wisdom Udugba of department of Biotechnology described the occasion as joyful. He promised to live up to the matriculation oath and work hard to graduate with a first class.

    FUTA VC, bursar arraigned for alleged N156.9m fraud

    The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) yesterday arraigned Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) Vice-Chancellor Prof. Adebiyi Daramola and Bursar Ayodeji Oresegun at the Ondo State High Court in Akure for alleged N156.9million fraud.
    Daramola and Oresegun were invited in October by the anti-graft agency, following a petition by non-teaching staff.
    The embattled VC was arraigned on a nine-count charge and the bursar on a two count charges.
    Daramola was alleged to have obtained N17.3million for accommodation allowances from 2012 till last year whereas he was living in government quarters.
    The VC was accused of collecting N15.4million for biennial family vacation overseas for 2013 and 2014.
    Daramola and Oresegunpleaded not guilty.
    The VC’s counsel, Adebayo Adenipekun, asked the court to give his client bail, saying he has been on administrative bail and has not breached any of the conditions.
    Ibukun Fasanmi, who represents the second accused, aligned with the submission.
    EFCC lawyer Ben Ubi objected, saying the defendants failed to place material facts before the court.
    Justice Ademola Bola granted bail at N10million each.
    He ordered them detained at the State Investigation Bureau (SIB) in Akure, pending when they meet their bail conditions.
    There was drama at the court’s main entrance as hundreds of workers clashed with students, who were in court to solidarise with the VC.
    Security operatives intervened and normalcy was restored.

    No worker sacked, says FUTA VC

    The Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Prof Adebiyi Daramola, yesterday said no worker was disengaged by the management.

    At a briefing in Akure, the state capital, Daramola said only the institution’s primary school workers were disengaged.

    According to him, the development was in line with the Federal Government’s directive, which ordered universities not to fund their staff schools.

    He said the affected teachers were given proper notice before they were laid off.

    The VC maintained that the management provided a soft landing for the teachers as they were allowed to re-apply for their old jobs.

    Daramola added that the staff of primary and secondary schools of the university are under the institution’s management.

    He expressed concern that the leadership of the Non Academic Staff Union (NASU) and Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) instructed the disengaged staff not to apply.

    He added that the intervention of the Deji of Akure, Oba Ogunlade

    Aladetoyinbo and the Commissioner of Police, Mike Ogbodu, to prevail on the disengaged teachers to re-apply was stalled by the leadership of the two labour unions.

    The don warned the disengaged teachers not to cause a crisis in the university.

    He disagreed with the notion that the university was embroiled in crisis, saying there is peace in the university.

    Daramola noted that the disengaged workers were paid their entitlements through their pension fund administrators, and the university did not owe any of them.

    The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Prof Adebiyi Daramola, has admonished students of higher institutions to acquire extra skills in addition to their degrees in order to have a unique selling point.

    During an interaction  with the institution’s Students Union officials led by the Public Relations Officer, Mr. Idowu  Ayodeji, Daramola said having a distinctive expertise like foreign language, software skills or higher degree in an uncommon course will give  undergraduates  added advantage in the labour market and make them favourite of prospective employers.

    Speaking on the state of the education sector in the country, Daramola stated that ICT has made learning broader and students have unlimited access to diverse information and opportunities to broaden their horizon.

    On students unionism, the Vice-Chancellor that dialogue should be the key factor in students’ engagement with university authorities, government, communities and other stakeholders.

    According to him, strikes by students cause set-back and destroy the system.

    “The university is a civilised place where ideas can be cross fertilised to achieve the best result” he said.  He urged the student leaders to apply common sense to students’ unionism and curtail militancy among their members while resisting the temptation to be goaded into doing evil in order not to destroy their future.

    The Vice-Chancellor noted that FUTA students were well behaved internally and externally due to the efforts of management in exposing the leadership as well as the generality of the students to global best practices and requisite training programmes.

    Daramola said he was optimistic that before the end of his tenure FUTA will rank as one of the first five universities in Nigeria.  He said: “The process of building a world class institution is a long one but FUTA is steadily becoming a first class university globally. His words: “We have overtaken some of the old generation universities, but we can still do better.” He said students have a major role to play in the institution’s journey to greatness by participating in and winning top rated competitions nationally and globally.

    The Students Union team which included Mr. Tesleem Okunlola, and Miss Oyewunmi Balogun, thanked the Vice Chancellor for his advice assuring him that they would continue to engage in constructive engagement with the authorities and other stakeholders.

    Former FUTA VC kidnapped in Akure

    A former Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA), Prof. Albert Adeoye Ilemobade, has been kidnapped.

    The septuagenarian was reportedly abducted yesterday with his guard at his residence at Ijapo in Akure, the Ondo State capital.

    A source said a maid discovered that the former VC was not in the house.

    The abductors, who went with his car, abandoned it on Ijare Road, in Ifedore Local Government Area.

    Family members, friends and acquaintances have besieged Ilemobade’s residence.

    His abductors are yet to contact the family. Police spokesman Wole Ogodo said security operatives have begun investigation. Prof. Ilemobade was Vice-Chancellor between 1987 and 1995.

    The Students Union leaders of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) have been advised to be servant leaders in their comportment and service delivery.

    The Vice-Chancellor, Prof Adebiyi Daramola and Dean, Students’ Affairs, Dr. Kayode Alese, gave this counsel at the inauguration of the new leaders.

    Daramola, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Development), Prof Tolulope Akinbogun, advised them to see leadership as a process whereby a person influences others to accomplish set objectives and direct an organisation in a way that makes it cohesive and coherent.

    “The underlying principles here are service, character and teamwork.  Do not let your position get into your heads.You must be humble and approach every situation with maturity.The character you display during your tenure will show the kind of persons you are. Strive to serve others, even as you lead,” he said.

    The vice chancellor promised that the students’ leaders will benefit from local and international trainings in tandem with the extant culture of the university.

    “We have consistently been sponsoring student leaders to attend leadership training programmes within and outside Nigeria for the past six years.  I believe your administration will not be an exception.  This is part of our resolve to take FUTA and its products to a higher level of internationalisation in scholarship and excellence,” he said.

    Alese advised the leaders to make the interest of the electorate their utmost priority.

    “You must represent them and put aside personal gains.  As leaders you must be up and doing.  You must be responsible and exhibit leadership qualities at all times. You must be able to take decisions in the overall interest of not only the students’ populace but the entire University Community,” he said.

    President, FUTA Students Union, Fowobaje Oluwaseun, said he and his colleagues would ensure that they take students unionism to a positive level and a crisis free tenure.

    “We shall stand to uphold and uplift the integrity of the Students Union by rebranding FUTA and also ensure peace and progress in running the affairs of this great institution. Our mission is to build a better union, to bring back respect to the students union, to change the perspective of students about student unionism,” he added.

    We must return to massive cocoa production, says FUTA VC

    The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA), Prof Biyi Daramola, has called for a return to massive production of cocoa.

    Daramola said the concentration on oil was not good for the country.

    The FUTA boss, who spoke at the kick-off of a training for Ondo State Cocoa Pruners, was represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Development, Prof Tolulope Akinbogun.

    The training is being handled by the university’s Centre for Entrepreneurship (CENT).

    The pruners are being taught modern skills in cocoa pruning that will enhance better yield.

    Daramola urged the participants to give the training all attention because of its importance.

    According to him, cocoa production, which used to be one of the mainstay of the Nigerian economy, especially in the Southwest, has long been abandoned for oil, but is now due for revitalisation.

    He said: “There are always modern ways of doing things to achieve the best result. If you do not know these modern ways, it will affect your output. See this opportunity as one of the best. Utilise it well so that you can train others.”

    He said FUTA is well-positioned to carry out the training because of its expertise in agriculture and related fields. He said the university would continue to ensure that it adds value to its immediate environment and the society at large.

    The Director of the Centre, Dr. Ayo Olajuyigbe, praised Ondo State Governor Olusegun Mimiko for revamping cocoa production.

    Dr. Olajuyigbe the Southwest states to leverage on FUTA’s researches to develop their citizens and build in them entrepreneurial skills. He said skill acquisition holds the key to solving the seemingly intractable problem of youth unemployment in the country.

    Chairman, Ondo State Cocoa Implementation Committee, Dr. Jibayo Oyebade, praised the management of FUTA for adding value to teh society.

    He said “FUTA has come to stand distinctly in the comity of universities in Nigeria, Africa and the world. There are lots of potentials in FUTA that should be externalised.

    “We appreciate FUTA’s CENT for partnering with us to train this first set of pruners. This training will enhance the skill of the cocoa farmers in our state and further showcase our products to the world.”

    He also thanked FUTA for accepting to train the pruners for further development of the cocoa industry.
