As part of its contribution to the beautification of the environment and education, the International Forestry Students Association, (IFSA), Federal University Technology, Akure (FUTA) chapter, has embarked on the tagging of all exotic and indigenous trees that dot the university campus.

The name tagging exercise is one of the activities marking the 2015 IFSA Week.

Flagging off the event, the Dean, School of Agriculture & Agricultural Technology, (SAAT), FUTA, Prof Shadrach Akindele, lauded the students’ initiative, describing it as a noble drive worthy of emulation by students of other universities.

The Head of Department, Forestry and Wood Technology, Prof Tunde Ajayi, said the name tagging would enable members of the FUTA community and visitors to identify the names and uses of the trees at a glance.  He explained that some of the trees were planted while some were pollinated.

IFSA President, Opeyemi Adaramoye, said the students decided to tag the trees to beautify the environment, broaden knowledge and give practical expression to what the students are learning.

The association vice president, Rebecca Adelola, is optimistic that the project would make the students and their course of study relevant locally and globally.

IFSA is a worldwide body with headquarters in Europe while the Nigerian headquarters is domiciled in FUTA.

  • FUTA is 11th institution to honour Afe Babalola

The selfless effort of Aare Afe Babalola, (SAN) towards the establishment of the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) in the 1980s was rewarded at the university’s convocation last Saturday where he was conferred with the honorary Doctor of Management degree.

The Founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD) shone like a million stars at the colourful ceremony as his citation was read amid reverberating applause in an event that featured the crème-de-la-crème of the society.

FUTA is the 11th institution in Nigeria to honour the legal icon, farmer, and educationist.

Others include: Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti (Fellow,1997), College of Education, Ikere-Ekiti (Fellow,1998), University of  Ado-Ekiti (Doctor of Law, 2000), Nigerian Institute of Advance Legal Studies (FNIALS) (Fellow, 2002), Kogi State University (Doctor of Letters, 2012), University of Lagos (Doctor of Law, 2013), University of Jos (Doctor of Law, 2013).

A November 17, 2014 letter with Reference Number FUTA/REG/CAD/HDC/71 signed the Registrar and Secretary of Council of FUTA Dr. M.O. Ajayi, predicated the award on Babalola’s “significant contributions to the growth and development of this university (FUTA) and the nation”.

Babalola had, in 1982, waived a N5 million legal in exchange for a federal institution to be established in the then Ondo State. The Alhaji Shehu Shagari-led Federal Government acceded to Babalola’s request by citing the Federal Polytechnic in Ado-Ekiti. But when the (Unity Party of Nigeria (UPN) government under the leadership of Governor Michael Adekunle Ajasin heard of the move, the late Ajasin quickly announced the establishment of the Obafemi Awolowo University (now Ekiti State University) also in Ado-Ekiti. The Federal Government then moved the polytechnic to Akure. But soon afterwards when FUTA was sighted Akure, the polytechnic, which Afe single-handedly fought for, was moved to Ado-Ekiti, Babalola’s homestead.

Aare Babalola, who was the first Chairman of the Governing Council of the polytechnic, invested his resources to ensure the effective take-off of the institution.

After his seven-year tenure as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of Council of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) – during which he was voted the best Pro-Chancellor twice – Babalola founded ABUAD to entrench functional and reformatory education in quality all areas.

Daramola congratulated the recipient on his solo representation of Nigeria on the project. He said from Dr Arotupin’s antecedents, the UN has found a tested academic to drive the important research project.

The ZGIP was initiated in 2012 as part of the Human Space Technology Initiative (HSTI) capacity-building activities, in which a fixed number of microgravity-simulating instruments, called Clinostats, were distributed to selected schools and institutions worldwide.

The major objectives as stated by the coordinators include to: “provide opportunities for students and researchers to observe natural phenomena of samples under simulated microgravity conditions on the ground, and to inspire them to undertake further study in the field of space science and technology. The project is also aimed at creating datasets of plant species with their gravity response, which would contribute to design future space experiments, and to the advancement of microgravity research.”
