  • Anxiety as ‘host communities’ invade FUTO

There was tension yesterday at the Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Imo State, when hoodlums, suspected to be indigenes of the host communities, invaded the university.

The invaders reportedly demolished buildings and destroyed other school property worth millions of naira.

The heavily armed thugs were said to have demanded the immediate relocation of the institution from their ancestral land.

They allegedly threatened to raze the school, if their demands were not met.

The suspected thugs, who were said to be from Umuchima, Ihiagwa and Umuanunu, in Owerri West Local Government Area, accused the institution of encroaching on their land.

But the vice chancellor, Prof Chigozie Cyril Asiabaka, who conducted reporters round the institution to show the level of damage, insisted that the invasion was unprovoked and barbaric.

The vice chancellor said FUTO had been having a cordial relationship with the host communities until their recent demand that part of the land, which was legitimately acquired by the Federal Government for the institution, be ceded to them.

According to him, none of the management workers, including himself, had the powers to cede the land to any community.

Prof Asiabaka said: “FUTO is not at loggerheads with the communities. Why should they vandalise our property? The damage they unleashed on the university is massive and unprecedented. FUTO’s land belongs to the Federal Government; we have not encroached on their land.

“Their demand that the school should return part of the land to the communities is impossible because nobody here can approve that, except the Federal Government. We have convened an enlarged management meeting and far-reaching decisions have been taken. These include the immediate perimeter fencing to forestall further encroachment on the university’s land.”

The vice chancellor stressed that the invasion and other distractions did not affect academic activities.

He said: “The university is still moving on, despite distractions around us. The students will begin their examinations on Monday. We are not distracted by the activities that are going on.”

The traditional ruler of Ihiagwa Autonomous Community, Eze James Muruako, said the action of the communities might have been triggered by a statement from a top FUTO official.

He also alleged that the communities had sued FUTO over the land.

The monarch added that no adequate compensation had been given to the communities after ceding over 5,000 plots of land to the Federal Government.

  • ‘We must stop malaria’

    ‘We must stop malaria’

Environmental Health Technology Students’ Association of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), has marked this year’s World Malaria Day with the theme: “Invest in the future: defeat malaria”.

The organisers said the day was commemorated to create awareness on the danger of malaria.

The association’s president, Celestine Onah, traced the history of the day to the 60th World Health Assembly held in March 2007, which replaced Africa Malaria Day. He said the focus was to educate the people about malaria, adding that everyone must join efforts to be control the deadly fever.

The Dean, School of Health Technology, Prof N. S. Dozie, praised the students for organising the sensitisation programme, calling on stakeholders to join hands to eradicate the illness. He promised to support the students in their subsequent campaign.

The association recommended adequate funding of environmental health services across the nation as part of the measures to prevent malaria. It also government to make research grants available to tertiary institutions to carry out research on ways to eradicate the disease. Engaging environmental health practitioners in piloting the affairs of malaria control, the association said, would achieve effective results.

Haruna Wakili, a graduating student, said: “We commemorate Malaria Day to send a message to the world that malaria is an environmental health problems and needs environmental health solutions. Simple.”

Ijeoma Mang, another student, said she had gained more knowledge on malaria control through the programm.

  • FUTO loses lecturer

    FUTO loses lecturer

A lecturer in the Department of Biomedical Technology of the Federal University of Technology in Owerri (FUTO), Dr Sikiru Lamina, is dead. Students and lecturers described his death as shocking.

The late Lamina, who was said to be kind, friendly, dedicated and resourceful, had been tipped to become the new Head of the Department before his sudden death.

Mourning the lecturer, the National Association of Biomedical Technology Students (NABTES) wrote on its Facebook page: “With sadness in our hearts, we announce the death of our father, brother, friend, staff advisor, lecturer, Dr Sikiru Lamina. He was a man every student loved, every staff loved. We can’t still believe he has left us; death, why did you do this? We pray God grants you eternal rest sir. You are the best and we all will miss you.”

  • Dept holds public lecture

The School of Health Technology (SOHT) at the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) has held its 5th lecture series. The lecture was delivered by a lecturer in the Department of Public Health, Dr Uchechukwu Chukwuocha and entitled: Anti-malaria drug resistance: Molecular considerations and implications for evidence based research in Nigeria.

“Malaria is a disease of poverty and major hindrance to economic development. The actual number of deaths is not known with certainty, as accurate data in many rural areas in most cases are not documented,” he stated.

He said some of the factors that contributed to the spread of the disease included drug pressure due to complacency, indiscriminate drug usage and adulterated drugs, biological influence, decreased immunity, malnutrition and cross reactivity with drugs for other ailments.

He listed therapeutic efficacy test, studies of parasite susceptibility to drugs in culture, case detection, molecular methods of gene mutations or gene amplifications associated with parasite resistance as tools for managing the spread of the disease.

Chukwuocha said there was the need for high-quality monitoring of antimalarial drug resistance, sustained funding and encouragement of high level research for routine monitoring, continuous surveillance of molecular drug resistance to inform better planning and effective implementation of drug policies based on evidence.

In his remark, Dean of the school, urged the students to be committed and dedicated to their academics. “The future of Africa is in your hand, especially in the fight against malaria, HIV/AIDS and tuberculosis, which are the diseases affecting Africa. So I encourage you to go into research in these areas,” he said.

  • FUTO lecturers: no resumption

The Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO) chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) yesterday said its members will not do any academic activity until the Federal Government implements the agreement between President Goodluck Jonathan and the union.

In a communique issued at the end of its congress at the New SAAT Auditorium and signed by its Chairperson, Dr. Ikenna Nwachukwu and another official, Dr. F. M Eke, the union urged parents to ignore the resumption notice by the FUTO management.

It insisted that the branch was committed to the position of ASUU’s National Executive Council (NEC) “towards peaceful and proper conclusion and implementation of ASUU-FGN negotiations”.

The communiqué added: “We appreciate the patience of our students and parents. We are calling on them to prevail on the government to implement the agreement reached with the union, as this struggle is in the best interest of teaching, leaning and national development.

“Parents are advised not to use their wards/children as puns by exposing them to danger in the struggle since Government plans to militarize our educational campuses.”

The university’s spokesman Chike Ezenwa said majority of the lecturers were ready to return to work, while only ASUU members were adamant.

  • FUTO to make car

The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Prof Cyril Asiabaka, yesterday said the university will manufacture the first Nigerian made car in 2015.

Asiabaka said the car would be produced in partnership with the University of Munich, Germany.

He said the car, to be code named “Africar”, would be manufactured in commercial quantity by 2017.”

Asiabaka spoke when members of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) visited the institution.

He dismissed insinuations that admission of candidates for degree programmes had become a cash-and-carry business, adding that the university has credible strategies to ensure that admission is based on merit for enhanced academic excellence.

  • The rite of graduation

As they filed out of the examination halls, final year students of the Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka, were ambushed by their junior colleagues for the rite of ‘baptism’, which involves the splashing of water to celebrate their graduation. UCHE ANICHEBE (500-Level Law) reports.

Nobody knew how it started or from where it originated. Groups of students came out from nowhere, with buckets filled with water; they ambushed their senior colleagues as they came out of the examination halls. Gently, they asked their ‘victims’ to squat as they surrounded them to perform the ‘baptism’.

It is ritual usually performed on final year students to bid them farewell.

Baptising graduating students with all sorts of liquid is a common practice in many higher institutions. It is a tradition that is observed at the end of the session when students in the final lap of their academic journey graduate.

Commonly referred to as “graduation baptism” or “washing”, it involves either ambushing outgoing students with buckets of water or inviting them into circles of students to ‘honourably’ receive the splashes of water from junior colleagues. After the ‘baptism’, the graduates entertain the ‘assailants’ with drinks to celebrate the forthcoming convocation.

Sometimes, the excited students, most of who are freshers and second-year students, go to the extent of pelting their ‘victims’ with eggs and tomatoes. At other times, students in a particular Hall of Residence may agree to wash their clothes or plates and splash the water on their ‘victims’. In extreme cases, the performers of ‘baptism’ collect water from sewage to splash on the graduates.

All these were carried out by Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK) students, who joined their graduating colleagues to celebrate the conclusion of the their final degree examination. CAMPUSLIFE witnessed the ‘baptism’ of graduates from various departments.

With the university not joining the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), students were in school to write second semester examination.

The baptism was performed in various departments at the permanent and temporary sites of the institution daily. Despite the epileptic power supply and shortage of water on campus, students somehow got many buckets of water for the exercise.

At the temporary site, which is close to the UNIZIK junction, the water ritual was observed differently. The graduates were made to sit on a stool, while their colleagues from their hostels and nearby halls pelted them with sachets water, eggs, tomatoes, stew and all sorts of liquids.

It did not matter whether the baptisers knew the ‘victims’, all that mattered was to identify any graduating student; the mob would immediately swing into action. After the baptism, some of the outgoing students threw parties where the mob was entertained.

Ozuo Isidore, a graduating student from the Faculty of Law, noted: “It was as if all my hostel mates knew I was graduating on that day; they all waited for me. I had already been splashed in the school but immediately I stepped into the hostel, they started to pour all kinds of water on me. At that point, another graduating member of the hall returned, and they asked us to play a football match against each other, threatening us with the dirty liquids. The loser was drenched with a good amount of sewage water.”

A graduating student identified as Gold, who was visibly angry with his colleagues’ treatment, protested, complaining he did not like the “water affair”.

“This is becoming wicked. I never sprayed drainage water on my seniors when they graduated last year. After I wrote my final paper, people, most of who I could not recognise, ambushed me and sprayed water from the drainage on me. My plea not to do so fell on deaf ear. I got irritated, and when I got home to have my bath, I saw some larvae on my underwear. I felt disgusted.”

One of the baptisers, Uche Orji, a 400-Level Engineering student, told CAMPUSLIFE: “I always look forward to catch the excitement. The kind of water and duration of the baptism depend on the popularity of the graduating student in question and his academic record. Bookworms and first class graduates always receive severe treatment. Students that used dirty water on their senior colleagues will definitely have the same treatment when their turn comes.

“It is all fun. Most of the time, people do it in good faith. In my hostel right now, people are storing used laundry water to spray the hall chairman, who will graduate in two days. Then we cap it with party.”

On other campuses, the ritual is the same. Gerald Nwokocha, a graduate of Information and Telecommunication Technology from the Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), relived his experience.

“It is a yearly activity in my school. When I wrote my final paper, my junior colleagues waited for me at my hostel, spraying me with all sorts of water. They were not satisfied; they pushed me into mud water just to celebrate my graduation from the university. That is what makes graduation memorable and no one is a graduate unless he is baptised.”

  • Jonathan to student: emulate Onwuliri

President Goodluck Jonathan has urged university students to emulate the virtues that characterised the life of the former Vice-Chancellor of Federal University of Technology Owerri, FUTO Prof Celestine Onwuliri.

Onwuliri, an accomplished academic, was one of those who died in the Dana plane crash at Iju Ishaga in Lagos last year.

Speaking during the inauguration of an ultra-modern laboratory built by the management of Gregory University Uturu in Onwuliri’s honour, President Jonathan lauded his rich academic history.

The President, who was represented by the Minister of Education, Prof Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufa’i, praised the scholarly industry of the late university don who earned his admission into the famed Academy of Science with a research project conducted locally in a Nigerian university.

He also commended the Chancellor of Gregory University Uturu, Dr Greg Ibe for initiating the project. He enjoined other universities in Nigeria to emulate the gesture, stressing that the late don deserves the honour done to him.

In his speech the Governor Theodore Orji, who was represented by the Abia State Head of Service, Adiele, urged people to strive to leave lasting legacies for which they will remembered, like the late Onwuliri has done.

Responding, the wife of the deceased, Prof Viola Onwuliri, who is also the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, pledged that the Onwuliri family would continue to partner with Gregory University to sustain her late husband’s ideals.

About 58 students entered for the contest online, while 37 were called for auditioning. After a series of training and test, the contestants were reduced to 16.

The contestants were tested on physical strength in various attires. Their entrepreneurial skills were also tested when they were given tickets to sell to participants. The judges also engaged the contestants intellectually. The pictures of the contestants were later uploaded on the Internet for online voting by the public.

At the end, Francis beat 15 others to win the contest.

He attributed his success to divine mercy. According to him, hours to the event, he was already feeling bad that he was not going to win because he could not get highest number of votes cast by the public.

Francis, however, won the contest because of his brilliance and entrepreneurial ability. He was presented with a Volkswagen Golf car and one year modelling contract.

Elated, Francis told our correspondent: “I feel greatly honoured for this feat.”

The show featured performances by several artistes. But the hall was more lively when Lynxx, a hip-hop artiste, took the stage.
