  • Man sentenced for stealing a microfinance bank N935,000

    An Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun  on Wednesday sentenced a 29-year-old man, Dotun Akande, to one year  in prison for N935.000 belonging to Orisun Microfinance Bank.
    In a ruling, Senior Magistrate G. E. Akan, however gave the convict an option to pay N20,000 fine.
    Akande, who lives at No. 28 Ayantunde St.,  Iyana-Iyesi,  Ota, had pleaded guilty to stealing.
    Earlier, Mr Chudu Gbesi, the prosecutor, had told the court that the accused committed the offence sometimes between  May and August, 2016.
    He said the accused, who was the staff of the Microfinance Bank, collected N935, 000 from customers and refused to remit the money to his employer.
    The prosecutor said that the convict converted the money to his personal use.
    Gbesi said that the offence contravened Section 390(9) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun, 2006.

  • Two men face trial for smoking hemp in Ogun

    Two men, Anoto Tunde and Sholedolu Sadiq, on Thursday appeared in an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun for allegedly smoking hemp publicly and disturbing public peace.

    They were, however, released on bail in the sum of N40, 000.

    The accused — Tunde, 20, and Sadiq, 16 — who are facing a charge of breach of peace, have pleaded not guilty.

    But Police Prosecutor Chudu Gbesi told the court that the accused committed the offence on Oct. 30 at Ilo-Awela, Ota.

    According to him, the duo conducted themselves in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by smoking hemp in the public which created fear in the community.

    The offence contravened Section 249(d) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun, 2006.

    The Senior Magistrate, Mr G. E. Akan, while ruling on the bail application of the accused, granted the two men bail in the sum of N20, 000 each with two sureties each in like sum.

    He said that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and be gainfully employed with an evidence of tax payment to Ogun Government.

  • Fake herbalist docked for allegedly swindling woman of N14,500

    A 25-year-old fake herbalist, Afirosi Akinsola, on Wednesday appeared in an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun for allegedly swindling one Blessing Oladele of N14.500 for the preparation of a “protection” charm for her.

    Akinsola who lives at No. 8 Damola St., Atan, Ota, is facing a two counts of obtaining money under false pretense and threat to life.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Chudu Gbesi, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Oct. 25 at about 10 a. m. at Olounda, Atan, Ota.

    Gbesi said that the accused collected N14.500 from the complainant, with a promise to prepare charm for her for protection.

    He said that when the complainant asked the accused to return her money when he failed to deliver the charm, he threatened her.

    He said that the offences contravened Sections 86 and 419 of the Criminal Code Vol. 1, Laws of Ogun, 2006.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Senior Magistrate, Mr G. E. Akan, granted the accused bail in the sum of N5, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Akan ordered that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and be gainfully employed, with evidence of tax payment to Ogun Government.

    The case was adjourned until Nov. 21 for further hearing.

  • Man docked over alleged rape of minor

    A 35-year-old man, Adekunle Aiyegunle, was on Thursday brought before an Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun State over alleged rape of a minor.

    Aiyegunle, who lives at Odediran area of Iyana-Iyesi in Ota, is facing a charge of rape.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Chudu Gbesi, told the court that the accused committed the offence on Oct.17 at about 10.30 a.m at his residence.

    Gbesi said that the accused raped a 4 year-old girl (name withheld).

    He said that the accused was caught in the act of committing the offence by his neighbour, who reported the case at Onipanu Police Station.

    Gbesi said that the offence contravened Section 360 of the Criminal Code Vol. 1, Laws of Ogun, 2006.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Senior Magistrate, Mr G. E. Akan, granted bail of N200, 000 with two sureties in like sum.

    Akan said that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and be gainfully employed with the evidence of tax payment to Ogun Government.

    The case was adjourned until Nov. 5 for further hearing.

  • Court remands man, 44, in prison custody for murder

    An Ota Magistrates’ Court in Ogun, on Monday, remanded a 44-year- old man, Abiodun Ilesanmi, in prison custody for allegedly shooting a man to death.

    Ilesanmi, who is of no fixed address, is facing a two -count charge of conspiracy and murder.

    The prosecutor, Sgt. Chudu Gbesi, told the court that the accused and others now at large, committed the offences on Aug. 15, 2015 at Ogba-Ayo, Ijoko, Ota.

    Gbesi alleged that the accused and his accomplices conspired and killed one Sunday Adefuoye, 25, with a gun.

    He said that the offences contravened Sections 316 and 324 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun, 2006.

    However, the plea of the accused was not taken by the court.

    The Senior Magistrate, Mr G. E. Akan, ordered the remand of the accused in prison custody, pending the receipt of legal advice from the state Director of Public Prosecutions ( DPPs ) on the matter.

  • Man in court over alleged N7.1m fraud

    A 28-year-old man, Tunde Egbebi, was on Monday brought before an Ota Senior Magistrates’ Court in Ogun, for allegedly defrauding a man of N7.1 million.

    Egbebi, whose address was not provided, is facing a two-count charge of fraud and obtaining money under false pretences.

    The Prosecutor, Sgt. Chudu Gbesi, told the court that the accused committed the offences on Aug. 14, 2017, at about 10 a.m at Sango-Ota.

    Gbesi said that the accused collected N7.1 million from the complainant, Oluwole Bisiriyi, on the pretext of supplying palm kernel to him.

    He said the accused failed to fulfill the promise and did not return the money to the complainant.

    He said the offences contravened Sections 390( 9 ) and 419 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Ogun, 2006.

    The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

    The Senior Magistrate, Mr G. E. Akan, granted the accused bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum.

    He said the sureties should be gainfully employed and must reside within the court jurisdiction.

    Akan also ordered that the sureties should show evidence of tax payment to the Ogun Government and their addresses should be verified by the police.

    The case was adjourned until May 7, for hearing.
