  • Campaign organization uncovers assassination plot

The Ortom/Abounu Governorship Campaign Organization has uncovered plans by a militia group  in Konshisha local government area to kidnap and assassinate its Director of Finance, Mr. Sarwuan Tarnongu.

In a letter to the Benue State Commissioner of Police and dated  March 24, 2015, Barr. Josephat Abaagu, Director, Legal Services, stated that the leader of a criminal group called Civilian Joint Task Force, names withheld, has concluded plans to kidnap and possibly kill Mr. Tarnongu, a former chairman of Konshisha local government area of the state.

Abaagu said the plans which were hatched at the residence of a leader of the kidnap gang last month were secretly recorded.

“I am looking for a way to kidnap Tarnongu. Moreover, he is hypertensive so even if you kidnap him and take him to Makurdi alone, he would have died.

“I don’t know why he (Tarnongu) is still living in this world. Our group known as Civilian Joint Task Force would always go after its target. For instance, the recently kidnapped multimillionaire was whisked away in the presence of the police and V.I.O,” the gang leader was quoted as saying in a letter written by the group.

A recorded audio compact diskette recorded in Tiv language and the translated English version also enclosed that the gang leader, names withheld “has clearly demonstrated his gang’s mastery of kidnappings and armed robbery.”

According to the letter,  the leader “shockingly revealed the involvement of Governor Gabriel Suswam in a particular previous kidnap, where his intervention resulted in the release of the unnamed multimillionaire kidnap victim after payment of N9million as ransom.

The governor said the decline was about 11 per cent of the 2014 budget.

He listed the budget sources as the Statutory Allocation, Value Added Tax and Internally Generated Revenue (IGR).

Suswam said it was the earnest desire of his administration to block all revenue leakages to boost the revenue base of the state.

The governor urged the Assembly to consider the budget expeditiously for speedy passage.

He said the state government was evolving new and smarter policies to sustain the delivery of democracy dividends to the people.

Suswam attributed his achievements to the unparalleled cooperation he enjoyed from the two other arms of government – the Legislature and the Judiciary.

He urged them to sustain the tempo to enable him achieve greater things for the state.

Also, Speaker Terhile Ayua assured that despite the late presentation of the budget, the Assembly would consider it speedily for passage.

Ayua hailed Suswam for presenting the budget before the end of 2014.

  • As Suswam turns 50

Mr. “Infrastructure” Gabriel Suswam, the Governor of Benue State has proven that he is a leader with the love of his people and is committed to ensuring rapid development of his state. His good intentions on assumption of office to alleviate the suffering conditions of Benue people made him to embark on life-changing projects most of which he has carefully executed   to a logical conclusion. We are   talking about a leader who does not play to the gallery nor one who plays politics with the welfare of the people.

A predominantly agrarian society, Benue State was hitherto in a messy underdevelopment situation particularly in critical areas of infrastructure and physical projects. Think of how the deplorable roads were left in shambles, schools were not given facelift, public hospitals were underperforming as some of them became “mere consulting clinics”. The sports sector like the transport system were in a pathetic state requiring urgent attention. Similarly, the provision of pipe – born water, conducive housing, and other such amenities that make life worth living were in many places grossly inadequate. Other sectors of the state’s economy like security, information and communication, tourism, commerce and industrial development among others, were faced with various challenges.

Benue’s turning point came in 2007 with the assumption of office of Governor Gabriel Suswam. A visionary leader, Suswam showed that he had a clear mission of improving the people’s conditions of living through infrastructural development thereby bequeathing lasting legacies to the upcoming  generations.

That Benue State has witnessed unprecedented achievements under the administration of Governor Suswam is today glaring and indisputable. Uncountable development projects executed by this pragmatic leader have earned him nickname of ‘Mr. Infrastructure’.

Governor Suswam took over a deplorable rural and urban road network. But today, he has completed over 500 kilometers of these roads within the state. These include, 65 kilometres Orokam-Owukpa-Okpoga-Utonkon road;  and others that are awaiting to be commissioned. The  prioritized construction of an extensive road network in the state is primarily targeted at providing adequate access to and from the rural communities so as to revitalize and boost  agriculture which is the mainstay of the state’s economy.

To boost agriculture, the Suswam administration procured and distributed 147 tractors to farmers to enhance mechanized farming. This has been supported by timely procurement and distribution of assorted brands of fertilizers and improved seeds to farmers, as well as acquisition of modern knapsack sprayers for teeming farmers for weed control. The state government entered into partnership with the University of Iowa to achieve improved animal and crop production, processing, mechanization and  training which is manifested by the establishment of a modern piggery farm situated at the Akperan Orshi College of Agriculture Yandev in Gkoko local government area.

Ensuring a significant infrastructural progress in the area of education, Governor Gabriel Suswam has, in the sector of science and information technology, seen to the establishment of three functional technical colleges in the three senatorial districts, the rehabilitation or construction of classrooms in the secondary and primary schools across the state. The governor has also intervened in the provision of infrastructure in the tertiary institutions by which his latest undertaking is the construction of an ultramodern female hostel and a world class Faculty of Law complex at Benue State University, Makurdi.

Governor Suswam also gave  due attention to healthcare infrastructure  as can be seen in the completion and   new General Hospitals and the renovation of existing general hospitals in the 23 LGAs of the state. His intervention in the purchase of ambulances, drugs and modern health equipment transformed the delivery capacity of the General Hospitals for the better. The completion of the gigantic Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH) is a signature project that was commissioned on March 9, 2012 with fanfare by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.

Apart from these, a gigantic water processing facility-the Greater Makurdi water works which has a capacity of 100,000 cubic meters per day was completed and commissioned the same day with the Teaching Hospital by Mr. President during his official visit to Benue state. Alongside, Governor Suswam has Other water projects in Otukpo and Katsina-Ala  were completed to cater for the needs of the people of those  areas.

As a lover of sports, Suswam has committed adequate funds into the total renovation of the Aper Aku stadium which the attention given to  sport facilities has greatly helped the state owned Lobi stars football club to record appreciable performance at national sports events.

Electrification of urban and rural communities is another key area which Governor Suswam has delivered creditably well. His administration has completed and commissioned electricity projects to over 300 communities. The objective is  to stimulate economic activities in the rural communities with the resultant positive impact on reducing poverty, generating employment and creating wealth.

For a state famously confronted with dire security challenges, apart from enhancing peace and harmonious coexistence among the people, the Governor has acquired and donated operational vehicles including Armoured Personnel Carriers (APC), as well as communication gadgets to various security agencies in the state especially the Police to enhance their efficiency in the fight against crime.

There is no doubt that Governor Suswam has written the name of his administration on the sands of history.  He has proven that he is leader with the interest of the people at heart, an exemplary leader who does what he says and who keeps his promises with the people.

As he marks his golden age of 50, it is an auspicious time for him to do so because he is a role model, quintessential public servant and an epitome of hope to all and sundry.

  • Confusion over PDP governorship tickets in North-Central

Confusion over PDP governorship tickets in North-Central

In the North-Central states of Benue, Plateau, Kwara and Nasarawa, there is confusion over the PDP governorship tickets, reports Remi Adelowo

Just a few months to the 2015 general elections, Benue State Governor, Gabriel Suswam, is still keeping his succession plan close to his chest.

In the last one year, a number of politicians within and outside the government circles have been touted as Suswam’s anointed candidate to succeed him next year, but the governor has tactically refrained from letting the cat out of the bag yet as it concerns his favoured candidate.

That notwithstanding, about ten aspirants, including the deputy governor, Steve Lawani; former Minister of State for Trade and Investment, Chief Samuel Ortom; former Registrar of Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), Felix Atume; a retired permanent secretary, Mr. Hinga Biem; former speakers of the Benue State House of Assembly, Prince Terhemen Tarzoor and David Iorhemba; former Commissioner of Justice, Alex Adum and his environment counterpart, Dr. Eugene Aliegba and Permanent Secretary of Government House Administration, Dr. Tivlumun Nyitse and that of local government, Mr. Andy Uwouku, have declared their intention to succeed Suswam.

Others are a commissioner in the Federal Character Commission, Prince Simon Aondona, an astute politician, Mr. Basil Mbatsiantim; Commissioner for Lands and Survey, Mr. John Tondo and state chairman of Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), Mr. Simon Anchaver, among others.

Within the past few months, the governor and the paramount ruler of the Tiv in the state, HRH Akawe Torkula have been busy convening meetings to resolve issues that have arisen because of speculated trimming of governorship contenders in the state.

While many political pundits have expressed doubts about the streamlining of the governorship aspirants from the favoured Masev, Iharev and Nongov entity, otherwise known as MINDA, where zoning is reportedly favoured, the declarations from respected elders and stakeholders in the area to prune the list of aspirants to four has unsettled the camps of many aspirants.

At the onset, the traditional authorities claimed that the pruning of the aspirants from MINDA was because of their large number and that the decision was taken to enhance commitment and focus of the entity to the project which has not enjoyed the seat since the creation of the state.

A few weeks ago, another crucial meeting was reportedly held in Gboko between the Tor Tiv and all the governorship contenders from the MINDA extraction, where consultation waiver was granted unanimously to only four aspirants: Felix Atume (Gwer-West); Dr. Samuel Ortom (Guma); Mr. Hinga Biem (Gwer) and Prince Terhemen Tarzoor (Makurdi).

But sources claim that other governorship aspirants from the Idoma ethnic group are also gearing for the 2015 race on the assumption that aspirants from MINDA may fail to reach a consensus on single candidate and regardless of the positions of decisions reached by some powerful interests in the state on who succeeds Suswam.

For instance, the deputy governor, Chief Steven Lawani, and a former minister, Mr. Sam Ode, have stepped up their drive since the pruning exercise came to the fore.

With the seeming endorsement of Atume, a former Director-General of Benue Rural Development Agency (BERDA), former commissioner of works and President of the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), Ortom; former Permanent Secretary, Biem and Tarzoor, who is a former Speaker of the state House of Assembly to contest the PDP primaries, the battle

•Mimiko: opposition can’t hold on to Southwest in 2015

Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam yesterday said no Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governor would defect to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

He was reacting to Kano State Governor Rabiu Kwankwaso’s statement that more PDP governors would join the APC at the 2015 general elections approach.

Speaking with State House correspondents after meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan in Abuja, Suswam said the APC could not contend with the PDP.

He said: “It is unfortunate that the APC has continued to speculate. It looks like they don’t have confidence that, on their own, they can make any progress. So, they keep speculating that PDP is going to join them.

“That shows clearly that APC is not a party for Nigerians to go to. If I am sure of myself, I won’t be calling for additional troops from the enemy camp to come.

“They are not sure. They know they will not win until PDP joins them. Kwankwaso was elected under the auspices of the PDP. He has added value, so to speak, to APC. They discovered lately though that in spite of that, they can’t make any progress. So, they are now speculating and hoping against hope.

“It’s not going to happen. None of the governors they have been mentioning is going to APC. Take that from me. Rather, we have people who started PDP, who are very strong, like the Iroko (Ondo State Governor Segun Mimiko), coming back to the family they left sometime. Not even a councillor is going to join APC.”

Mimiko said from the signs on the ground, the APC would not be able to retain Lagos and other Southwest states next year.

He said: “With the configuration on the ground, apart from Osun that is already won by the APC, I think it will be difficult for the APC to hold on to any state in the Southwest.”

Suswam obtains ‘senatorial loan’ to challenge Gemade

FINALLY, Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam has declared his intention to vie for the Benue- north east senatorial seat occupied by Senator Barnabas Gemade in 2015.

The governor last week led his kinsmen from Sankera geopolitical block to ask for what is known in Tiv parlance as ”Injo” (senatorial loan) from Kwande people. Going by current political sharing formula, Kwande Local Government is supposed to produce the next senator in Benue – North East.

But the arrangement also allows the Kwande people to loan the seat to someone from another block. Kwande traditional council and political actors agreed to loan the senate seat to Sankera after intense negotiation with the governor, sources at the meeting said.

The Ter Kwande, Chief of Kwande Local Government Area, Chief Hillary Ikima, said since no other person has asked for the senatorial load, they have acceded to the demand of Governor Suswam.

With the loan, the epic battle between the former national chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Gemade and Suswam has kicked off.

The All Progressive Congress (APC) also has two candidates from Kwande for the senate seat.

They are Adaa  Maagbe and Manz Denga.  Maagbe, a former NITEL top management staff, has already put structures on grounds to challenge Suswam and Gemade for the seat while Denga, a former UBA staff in Kenya, is also coming into the race.

•Tor Tiv: I’ll not cede any land

Benue State Governor Gabriel Suswam has said he has no anointed candidate to succeed him next year.

He warned that any aspirant who engages in violence would be disqualified.

Suswam spoke at the 70th birthday celebration of the Tor Tiv, Alfred Akawe Torkula, in Gboko.

Suswam said although he has no power to instal any candidate to succeed him, as the power to do so lies with the people; he has the power to disqualify any aspirant, who is found to have promoted violence.

He advised all aspirants to go about their consultation peacefully and respect the right of other candidates.

“Everyone is qualified, but not everyone will be governor as it takes more than qualification to be a governor. I have no candidate; the only candidate is my wife.”

The governor advised Tiv people to close ranks for the development of their land and praised the monarch for his leadership.

Torkula said no part of Tiv land would be ceded for grazing reserves and advised the Federal Government to encourage herdsmen to embrace modern ranches.

The monarch said he would never accept grazing in Tiv land because the land is for farming and it is not enough for the farmers. He praised the governor for his support.

The chief host, John Tondo, described Torkula as an upright man, whose reign has brought peace and harmony in Tiv land.

Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman in Makurdi Local Government, Terwase Aondokaa, said the monarch is humble and loving.

  • Develop Igede land

    Develop Igede land

GOVERNOR Gabriel Suswam is a man of the people. He has done a lot in Benue State. This is why many indigenes of the state love him.

But the people of the Igede land are not getting much from the governor in terms of dividends of democracy. And these are strong supporters of the governor.

We need secondary schools, electricity, good roads, potable water and other good things of life.

The most neglected part of the Igede land is the Itogo Obi Local Government Area. The people of this area are suffering as a result of the neglect.

I am begging the governor to give us development in the strict sense of the word. We need it badly. And the only person that can give us is Governor Suswan.

    Cecilia,

    Igede, Benue State.
