  • Man gets death sentence by hanging for killing son

An Akwa Ibom High Court sitting in Ikot Ekpene has sentenced one Christopher Udoh to death by hanging for killing his 11-year old son, Gabriel over suspicion of being a witch.

Udoh, a native of Obot Akara local government area, reportedly murdered his son after accusing him of using witchcraft powers to frustrate him for years.

The Court held that the convict, who had already admitted to committing the offence, deliberately killed his 11-year-old son for allegedly being behind his many years of unsuccessful stint in his business in Benin City, Edo State.

According to Udoh, his son used witchcraft to stop him from succeeding in his business.

“After my inability to have a serious breakthrough in business, I discovered that my son could have been responsible. When I could no longer carry on with the business, I was stranded in Benin. I had to return home with nothing”, he recalled.

He added that every attempt to break even in life became too difficult, even to get married “since his mother was no longer with me following years of hardship that she could not bear”.

“For me to free myself of such spell, I had to kill him, burnt his body and dumped the remains in a pit”, he explained and pleaded for the Court to be lenient and for God to have mercies as he was only being used by the devil”, he said.

Handing down the judgment yesterday, the presiding judge, Justice Joy Unwana, said he passed the ruling after finding the accused guilty of murder in line with section 316 (1) of the criminal laws of Akwa Ibom State

Walcott confident Gabriel can handle physicality

Gabriel Paulista will have no problems with the physical nature of the Premier League, according to Arsenal team-mate Theo Walcott.

Theo Walcott needed only one training session with new Arsenal signing Gabriel Paulista to be convinced he will have no problem adapting to the Premier League.

The Brazilian centre-back moved to the Emirates Stadium from Villarreal on Wednesday and is expected to make his debut against Aston Villa on Sunday.

Walcott has been impressed with the 24-year-old in training and has no doubt he will be able to handle the physical nature of the English game.

“I’ve only trained with him once and he likes to put his foot in, that’s for sure,” the England international told the club’s official website.

“He’s not afraid to do that which is good, especially in the Premier League where you need to get stuck into your tackles.

“He’s very tall – I didn’t realise how tall he was. He’ll only be tested when he plays in the Premier League.

“It will take time coming from a different country to learn the language, the culture, so everyone will be patient with him.

“Players that the boss plucks out seem to be good players so I’m sure he’s going to help us.”

Victory for Arsenal over struggling Villa would see them climb back above Tottenham and into fifth place.

Adedeji was down with flu before the game while Olalekan missed the action due to card suspension.

The club’s media officer, Peter Abaje told SportingLife that the duo is working so hard to make the trip to Akure this weekend.

He said Adedeji had a light training on his own during Thursday morning training session.

“We are expected them back this weekend. Yinka had a lonely training session on Thursday in order to be in shape before this weekend’s match. Olalekan too is expected to make his return back after serving his suspension,” Abaje told SportingLife.

The club’s image-maker also informed that the duo of Abraham Okereke, Nasiru Hussaini are still out of action due to injury.

They sustained the injury during their 1-1 away draw against Shooting Stars Sport Club (3SC) at Lekan Salami Stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan last week.

“We have not received clear indication that they will play this weekend. Okereke sustained a dip cut on his head and he is still nursing it while Hussaini has not been cleared by the team’s doctors,” Abaje added.

    Reuben Gabriel’s Kilmarnock debut delayed

At a time when new signings of Scottish club Kilmarnock are getting set to make their debuts, Super Eagles defensive midfielder Reuben Gabriel may have to wait longer to play a competitive game for the club.

Gabriel was last week cleared to resume training by the medical team of the club, but he seems not to have gained full fitness to be in action this weekend.

Kilmarnock new boys Barry Nicholson and Mark Stewart are set to make their home debuts against Hibs at Rugby Park today. The pair signed for Killie last week from Fleetwood and Dundee respectively and are hoping to feature in front of home fans for the first time.

The inclusion of Stewart is made more likely by the absence of former Scotland striker Kris Boyd, who begins a two-match ban for his red card against St Mirren.

Hibs are also dealing with a suspension – to midfielder Kevin Thomson – and Liam Craig and Scott Robertson are struggling to shake off minor knocks ahead of the trip.

Captain James McPake is yet to prove his fitness, while Alex Harris and Paul Cairney are both long-term absentees.
