  • JAMB insists no bags, gadgets allowed in UTME centres

JAMB insists no bags, gadgets allowed in UTME centres

Candidates sitting for the 2016 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) have been warned to take only their e-registration slips and biros to examination centres.

The examination gets fully  under way today, with candidates expected to sit for two or three sessions daily.

Though the instructions are stated on the e-slips that bags, gadgets, calculators and phones are not allowed, many candidates took them to centres monitored in Lagos on Saturday, where 30 of the 53 centres held one session of the examination.

However, they were forced to keep their property outside, some with strangers.

Many were also sent away to re-print their e-registration slips because they brought the wrong ones to the centres.

Dr. Beatrice Okorie, who heads the Lagos annex of the Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) headquarters, said they were not expected to come with the items.

“The instructions were clear.  But many of them still came with bags and phones.  We sent them away to go drop their bags,” said Dr. Okorie, who supervised the centre at the Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH).

Regarding the correct e-registration slip, she said: “Before the examination commenced, the candidates were supposed to re-print their e-registration slips because the first one does not contain their centre and examination numbers.  That was why some who did not were told to re-print the correct one,” she said.

At the West Midland Communication Limited Centre in Ikeja, candidates with bags and others were also sent away.

The officials told parents to give their wards fare and leave.

However, some parents ignored the advice and waited outside the premises for the 2-hour 45 minutes duration of the examination.  They helped to keep property for some candidates as well.

The examination was hitch-free in many centres across Lagos.  However, there was a problem at Universal White Hall College in Fagba, Iju. Candidates were relocated to Bachel Model College, Ogba.

The reason for the change was not explained to candidates and their parents grumbled about the last minute change, made at 10 am.

Efforts to speak with the school officials proved abortive, as the headteacher, Mrs. Temilola, neither answered her phone nor showed up.

A parent, Mrs. Adesanya, said: “It is bad that they changed it like that without any warning. It was difficult finding this new venue but thank God we are here now and everything is going on well.”

But Bachel Model College was ready by the time the candidates reached there.  The college is supposed to serve as a UTME centre from March 7.

The headteacher, Mr. Adekunle Adeleke, said the school responded to a distress call from Universal White Hall College a few minutes before 9 am.

“They said they were experiencing technical issues at Universal White Hall College. I don’t know what it was but I think it had to do with their router. So, we gathered our staff impromptu and got things set. Lucky for us, we were prepared,” he said.

Adeleke said the college had facilities for 270 candidates, and additional 30 computers as backups.

The school’s proprietor, Mr. Ayokunle Fasusi, said it took between N8 and N9 million to get the centre ready to host UTME.

“By the time the exam was over, the JAMB officials gave us an excellent grade in their report,” he said.

The exams held between noon and 2 pm at Bachel and there were no hitches.

While only one session of the examination held on Saturday, from today, Dr. Okorie said there would be two or three sessions daily for the 14-day duration.

Besides the 30 split 1 centres, Dr. Okorie said there were 23 Split 2 centres in Lagos, which will start conducting the examination from March 7, 2016.

The examination is expected to end on March 11.

  • Here comes Nigerian-made Nissan Patrol

    Here comes Nigerian-made Nissan Patrol

The new Nissan Patrol assembled in Nigeria by Stallion Nissan Motors Nigeria is the Nissan’s latest Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV). It is packed with the most technologically imbued gadgets  that wields significant quality and performance, writes TAJUDEEN ADEBANJO.

Car buffs waiting to catch a glimpse of the latest Nissan Patrol would have every reason to celebrate the quantum of transformation in one of the best-known and longest established nameplates on the  4WD (four-wheel drive) globe

Now redesigned with an unprecedented zest and ergonomics, the more than six decades old nameplate has returned with a futuristic look that stands out for its unique combination of the most recent technologies and new design DNA.

Assembled in Nigeria by Stallion NMN plant in Lagos, the new Y62 Patrol as it is fondly called, epitomises Nissan’s tagline: ‘Innovation that excites.’

The new Patrol adapts to the needs of consumers by breaking away from its ‘proper off-roader’ status to become urbane-friendly Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) with far more refined proposition that offers a dramatically improved ride quality and fuel economy than its predecessor.

Compared with Toyota’s Land Cruiser, the new Patrol offers substantial ground clearance of 283mm which is 58mm greater and the Patrol matches competition’s maximum wading depth of 700mm, but breathes through the left-side guard vent, simplifying the fitment of an aftermarket snorkel.

Naturally aspirated, the Y62 Patrol comes equipped with a big V8 engine that delivers 298kw of power and 560Nm of torque – 90 per cent of which is available from just 1,600 rpm that makes 0-100 km/h sprint in just 6.6 seconds.

According to Nissan, the Patrol engine is undeniably a driver’s delight with an advanced seven-speed automatic transmission and sophisticated and electronically controlled all-mode 4X4 system.

Mr Amit Sharma, Stallion Nissan Motors Nigeria (NMN) Head of Sales and Marketing, attested to the Patrol’s expediency, saying: “the new Y62 Patrol isn’t the previous workhorse but a technologically savvy SUV imbued with all the practicality of a luxury sedan.

“And just as the new Patrol easily conquers a long uphill task with its exceptionally modified V8 torque, so does its multi-mode grip compensates for rocks and loose sand when driven on rough roads and in deep water,” Sharma explained.

He said the new vehicle is undoubtedly one of Nissan’s most revolutionary designs ever in the Patrol’s 62-year history and it incorporates the most innovative highest quality, and highest value luxury SUV in Nissan history.

The Patrol SUV is certainly a fun to drive. It offers four terrain options: Sand, Snow, Rock and On-road – at the touch of a button. This feature makes it unique in its segment as competition does not offer this feature.

At  city speeds and crawling around off-road, the broad spread of ratios is perfectly matched to the smooth delivery of torque from the 5.6-litre V8 while on the highway, the Patrol lopes along at 110km/h with the engine seemingly only a tick above idle. And when stoked, it responds with a throaty induction-snarl matched by impressive acceleration, particularly when overtaking.

In a world’s first, the Patrol employs advanced HBMC (Hydraulic Body Motion Control) System with 4-wheel independent suspension that works with the chassis and body frame to give the vehicle superb stability on rugged and sandy terrain, while also delivering comfortable ride in the city. This has greatly enhanced the vehicle’s 3500kg towing capacity that could be employed in towing a luxury cruise boat around town.

    Features

Standard in both variants of the Nissan Patrol range are Bluetooth phone and audio streaming; large format front DVD player; a 2GB hard drive music server with 13 speakers; USB and iPod connectivity; steering wheel audio controls; intelligent key access; eight-way power assisted driver’s seat; drive computer, three-zone climate control, front, side and curtain airbags with active front headrests. In addition are around view camera, 600ml cool box with dual side openings. The Patrol LE however gets separate seven-inch DVD screens in the rear of the front seat headrests with power operated tailgate.

Compared to its luxury rivals, the new Patrol has much off-road capability. And in crowded motor parks, one can be rest assured it won’t bump into other cars with dedicated parking aids such as a reversing camera, all-round parking sensors and a 360 degree around-view monitor. This again is a unique feature, which gives absolute peace of mind.

    Interior

The  Patrol is one of the largest cars in the luxury SUV category. It’s bigger in all exterior dimensions when compared to competition. There are plenty of interior space and comfort levels that you can expect including wood grain finishes, and up-market dash layout and high quality finishes. The Patrol is also functional. With all three rows of seats occupied, there is still 550 litres of storage space and when the second and third row seats are folded, the new Patrol can provide 3100 litres with a virtually flat floor.

    Driving

The big V8 engine is beautifully quiet and smooth on the road especially in an ideal long-distance journey, where one needs to transport up to eight occupants. And at highway speeds, the Patrol’s excellent wind and tyre noise insulation is apparent. No doubt, the Patrol is generally quiet and refined. The Patrol is in spite of this enhanced by Nissan’s new Hydraulic Body Motion Control on the suspensions to reduce body roll and give an exceptional ride comfort for the driver and passengers. You only need to sit in the rear seats to feel the comfort level compared to competition due to most ergonomically sitting posture in which one is comfortable even on long distance drives due to the thigh and back support provided by the Zero gravity seats.

Suffice to say the Patrol is absolutely unique in all attributes and totally unmatched by competition. These offerings make it a class above the rest of the SUV’S in its class in technology, comfort and luxury.

President Goodluck Jonathan acknowledged the beauty and adroitness of the made-in-Nigeria Y62 Patrol when he, in company of some government officials, took delivery of the Patrol in Abuja.

He said: “I’m quite happy that Nissan has demonstrated the reality of exporting cars from Nigeria is possible which suggests we can soon as a nation export vehicles to other parts of the world.”

  • Security gadgets for FCT schools

Mindful of the abduction of over 200 girls of Government Girls’ Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State by Boko Haram insurgents on April 15, the bomb blast at EMAB Plaza, Abuja and threats by the Boko Haram sect to attack major places in Abuja, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Senator Bala Mohammed has held a schools’ security conference to avoid a reoccurrence.

He said schools in the FCT would be equipped with modern security gadgets before they resume for next session in September. He said the move was aimed at protecting the lives of children and to avert the Chibok experience.

The new security measures to be introduced in schools will include provision of perimeter fencing, housing for teachers, community policing, school guards, alarm system and deployment of communication equipment. This, he said, is in order to take pre-emptive measures to prevent the insurgents from cashing in on any security lapses to attack any school.

Emphasis, he added, will also be laid on school alert and early warning systems, attitudinal change, awareness of basic security tips, safety and evacuation drills as well as the erection of both institutional and physical firewalls that obstruct unwelcome guests.

The minister said the battle against Boko Haram which has declared war on the country’s educational system is a battle of the heart, the mind and soul of the country.

Senator Mohammed, who was represented by the Secretary, FCT Education

Secretariat, Mallam Kabir Usman, said: “The FCT Administration considers this conference as part of its ongoing concerns to evolve a foolproof security framework for schools in the territory and the FCT as a whole.

“The need to pay special attention to protection of lives of our school children gave rise to the launch of the ‘Safe Schools Initiative’ at the recently-concluded World Economic Forum held in Abuja.

“The measures include provision of perimeter fences, housing for teachers, community policing, school guards, alarm systems and deployment of communication equipment. Even though, the target of this undertaking is the safeguard of school children in states under emergency rule, we in the FCT consider it necessary to take pre-emptive measures to avoid tempting the insurgents by any vulnerability.

“It is noteworthy that our commitments to school safety and overall emergency preparedness have proved effective in dealing with emergencies. A recent hijack of a school bus in Nyanya was quickly dealt with within a couple of hours. This, for us, was cheery news, even as it sent signals about the effectiveness of the machinery FCT Administration has put in place to ensure the security of lives and property in the territory.

“It could be recalled that one of the earliest initiatives of this administration at its inception was the procurement of 114 security vehicles fitted with communication and security gadgets to holistically confront criminals and threats of insurgency in the FCT. These vehicles were donated to all the security agencies, including the Nigerian Police Force (NPF), Department of State Security (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the Military in the FCT, among others.

“It is lamentable that education, which is the bedrock of national development, has been singled out by insurgents for constant attacks and raids, often leaving arson, deaths and destruction on their tracks. Our hearts are with the parents and relatives of the Chibok school girls, as our security operatives work round the clock to salvage them and bring them home alive.

“Without any iota of doubt therefore, the battle against those who have declared war on our educational system is a battle of the heart, the mind and the soul of our country. It is consequently a fight that we cannot afford to lose and the Federal Government has all the means to win it.

“In your deliberations today, I recommend that emphasis should be laid on school alert and early warning systems, attitudinal change, awareness of basic security tips, safety and evacuation drills, as well as the erection of both institutional and physical firewalls that obstruct unwelcome guests.”

On its part, the National Association of Private School Proprietors (NAPSP) has

pledged its support to government in carrying out what it described as important and urgent step to avert crisis.

The group said: “Since the issue of schools being the target of Boko Haram and especially the abduction of the Chibok girls, children, adult, parents and teachers are now living in fear. It is unfortunate that we have come to this point in our life where our hearts are bleeding profusely.

“We want to thank this administration for always being sensitive to issues. We support the sensitisation of individuals on security matters. For us in private schools, it is an ongoing thing and it has to be with the support of government, security agencies, parents and the general public.

“We promise that we will continue to do our best to work with the administration to ensure that things do not go wrong. For the schools that were closed down, we have looked at the list and most of them are not our members. We promise that we will continue to let our members know the necessity of doing the right thing for these children.

“There is madness and insecurity everywhere. Our children are being used not only to perpetrate crime but also to kill themselves and destroy their souls.

“Ebola has set in amid all these. We want to plead that this administration should also work on the health issue, especially on sensitisation of schools on Ebola virus. We also promise to work with government to achieve the desired aim. Peace has deserted us and this is a time for reflection, repentance, co-operation, gathering of resources and time for concrete action.

We must seek peace with ourselves and most especially with God. This is the time for us all to fight the tragedy that has bedeviled us.”

Royal fathers also joined the call for more security measures.

The Nyee of Gariki, His Royal Majesty Alhaji Usman Ngakupe advised parents to look after their wards, even as he urged teachers to take their job seriously.

    Susan Peters’ love for gadgets

LAST year, to the surprise of her fans who accused her of being frivolous, Nollywood actress Susan Peters acquired a Blackberry Porsche, the latest in its series as it were then. In her defense, the actress has said that it stems from nothing but her love for such devices.

“Anybody who knows me knows I love gadgets. I even buy gadgets before they come out, that is how bad it is. I order online because I want to be the first to buy it. I made my millions even before I joined Nollywood so somebody who doesn’t know me from nowhere cannot just sit down there and think I’m like this because I joined Nollywood,” the thespian says.

On celebrities showing off by acquiring expensive stuff and posting it on social media, she says that there is a reason it is called show business. “Show business is indirectly saying showing off but that is not what I call it. If you are in it, you have to be able to be out there and that is the truth. In Hollywood, they buy things and they put it out there so why is our own different?

“Last year, I got two new houses, why didn’t they put that on the blogs? I got awards and nominations, why didn’t they publish that? I have built my brand to this level so somebody cannot just come from nowhere and just poke it like some balloon. I am made of steel, they should know that,” Peters fumes.

  • Air controllers, NAMA bicker over gadgets

The National Association of Air Traffic Controllers (NATCA) yesterday said radio communication in the Nigerian airspace has not improved, despite efforts by the Nigeria Airspace Management Agency (NAMA) to fix the problem.

It alleged that the management is politicising the issue, rather than finding a lasting solution.

The air traffic controllers called on the Federal Government to declare a national emergency on aviation communication facilities.

NATCA President Victor Eyaru said the radio communication problem has existed for three decades beyond management.

Eyaru said though NAMA management expended over N400 million for VHF coverage and spent over N400,000 each for personalised headsets, it is not a solution to the problem.

His words: “Our position is clear. The Federal Government should declare a national emergency on aviation communication facilities in the interest of all.

“We do not want to be part of impending mass murder of innocent people that use Nigerian airspace. Enough is enough.”

But NAMA, in a statement yesterday, said it did not understand the motive behind the air controllers’ agitation.

It reads: “The management is affirmative that the seeming gloomy picture being painted by this group does not exist as the daily statistics show more traffic across the nation ‘s airports, averaging 500 , apart from over 150 daily flights around the Port Harcourt Airport axis operated by the oil companies .

“Apart from the fact that the daily foreign flights into the country has increased, the nation is being inundated with more requests by foreign airlines aspiring to explore Nigerian market.

“What else do you need to measure a safer sky?

“If there are no communication as being touted by the controllers one may then ask of their magic wand in handling these flights in question over decades as suggested in their statement.

“We view this latest affront on the management by the controllers as another attempt to distract its attention from pursuing the set goals of transforming the agency to a world-class air navigation service provider.”
