The Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Navy, Hon Yusuf Gagdi, has lauded Dr Nentawe Yilwatda, of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on his declaration as winner of the March 18 governorship election in Plateau State by the Court of Appeal.

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja on Sunday nullified the election of Caleb Mutfwang of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the governor.

Nullifying Mutfwang’s election, the appellate court led by Justice Okong Abang, in a unanimous judgment, ordered the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to withdraw his Certificate of Return and give it to Yilwatda.

Gagdi, in a statement personally signed in Abuja, described the development as the dawn of a new era in the state.

The lawmaker, who represents Pankshin/Kanke/Kanam Federal Constituency was confident that prosperity and serenity of Plateau State will grow under the leadership of Dr Yilwatda as the governor of the state.

The statement reads, “The triumph of lies over truth is indeed fleeting!

“It is the dawn of a new era in Plateau State with the victory of our Governor-Elect, Dr Nentawe Yilwada Goshwe at the Court of Appeal today, where his victory was affirmed as the legally recognized winner of the March 18, 2023 gubernatorial elections in Plateau State, following the nullification of PDP’s phyric victory.

“We have always indulged our teaming supporters to exercise restraint in their conducts, despite unwarranted provocation by our political opponents who unleashed all weapons of propaganda and emotional blackmail in their arsenals to sway the pendulum of justice and curry public sympathy in their desperation to hold unto power.

“Our believe in the judiciary as the bastion of justice and the last hope of the common man has always been unwavering, and we hold same in the highest esteem as we look forward to approaching the final phase of the legal tussle.

“While I call on all APC supporters to be magnanimous in victory and celebrate this milestone with all sense of modesty, it is my fervent prayer that our joys shall never be cut short by the evil machinations of our adversaries.

“I strongly believe the prosperity and serenity of Plateau State shall leap in bounds under the guidance of Dr Nentawe Yilwatda Goshwe as the Executive Governor of the State. We shall continue to pray for the success of your administration.”

Leave me out of your problems, Rep Gagdi tells Plateau PDP

The member representing Pankshin/Kanam/Kanke federal constituency of Plateau State, Rt. Hon. Yusuf Gagdi, has said the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state leave him and the judiciary out of their problems.

The Media Office of the lawmaker, in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja, said PDP members in Plateau state were confused for blaming their tribunal losses on their principal.

According to the statement, their problems were self-inflicted.

The statement described as unfortunate and unwarranted attempts by some PDP’s “emergency groups to vilify the lawmaker, who is the chairman, House of Representatives Committee on Navy, and whoever is opposed to the party, including the judiciary, for judgments not in their favour.

“We note with dismay attempts to drag the name of our principal, Rt Hon. Yusuf Adamu Gagdi, into the political tsunami that has befallen their party in Plateau State.

“Desperation can lead to an unending search for scapegoats. This is understandable but would not be condoned.

“It is also a pity that their futile efforts at blackmail and mud raking is now hinged on a catchphrase which our principal has used since 2015, ‘we know whom they know, but they don’t know whom we know!’

“For the avoidance of doubt, the catchphrase is an affirmation of our principal’s belief and trust in God as the giver of power to whom He pleases, no matter the earthly forces against such a person.

This catchwords gave birth to his campaign slogan, “In God we Trust.”

The Media Office warned that attempts to undermine the integrity of the judiciary when judgments were not in their favour is dangerous to the dispensation of justice.

It urged the PDP in Plateau state to desist from casting aspersion on the person and Office of the President of the Court of Appeal as any effort to throw mud at her will be stoutly resisted by all well-meaning Nigerians.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the President of the Court of Appeal is not a member of the panel handling the appeals from Plateau State and there is nowhere it can be imagined that she lobbied their justices to give the sound verdicts that have been given on the appeals before them.

“It will be interesting for the PDP and its social media hounds to tell Nigerians which justices they ‘bribed’ at the lower courts when the judgments were in their favour”

Rep denies calling for fuel subsidy probe

The Chairman, House Committee on Navy, Rep. Yusuf Gagdi (APC-Plateau) has has denied calling for a probe of the fuel subsidy removal under President Bola Tinubu.

Gagdi said this in a statement in Abuja on Monday.

In a statement by his office on Sunday, the lawmaker urged the media to be thorough in its reportage and not lose its integrity especially when it involves translation.

The statement reads, “The integrity of the media is very important, therefore should not be mortgaged or traded for anything.

“This seems the obvious in a misleading story in some section of the media quoting me to have allegedly said our President, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, will be probed over the subsidy removal.

“Nothing can be farther than the truth in that news report.

“I granted an interview with BBC Hausa Service wherein I made the point that it was imperative for the fuel subsidy to go as it was only enriching a few privileged and rich individuals to the exclusion of majority of Nigerians.

“In the said interview which was in Hausa, I applauded the courage of President Tinubu in removing the subsidy and not buckling under inspite of pressures from some quarters for the reversal of the fuel subsidy.

“I also acknowledged savings from the subsidy and reiterated the need for prudent spending so majority of Nigerians can enjoy the dividends of the subsidy removal.

“However, I was taken aback at the sensational headline in which the media… decided to couch the news item just for the clicks and gain traction.

“It is most irresponsible, reckless and designed to pitch me against our hardworking, committed President and his Renewed Hope Agenda.

“For the avoidance of doubt, as a parliamentarian and one of the longest serving one at that, I have remained committed to my party, APC, its aspirations and most importantly the objective of President Tinubu to renew hope and make our country work again.

“Owing to the immense esteem in which I hold the president, I voluntarily stepped down from the Speakership race when I was directed to.

“Therefore, it is not in my character to use certain words or impute any motive concerning this administration that is working to elevate Nigerians out of poverty and make things work better for majority of our people.

“For the avoidance of doubt, here is the translation of my interview with the BBC Hausa Service:

“I am one of many Nigerians who support the removal of fuel subsidy because I believe it is a form of theft. I swear that the subsidy is not doing any good for poor people of Nigeria.

“In the committee that I chair in the House of Representatives, I have learned a great deal about fuel subsidy. I know who is really benefiting from this subsidy, and it is not the Nigerian people. It is a small number of elites who are using the subsidy to amass wealth for themselves.

“I urge all and sundry to ignore the mischievous and blackmailing headline and urge media houses to be more circumspect while casting their headlines for the news.”
