  • Police nab kidnapping syndicate, recover AK 47 in Katsina

    The Katsina state Police command on Saturday announced the arrest of a notorious Cattle rustling and kidnapping Syndicate, recovering in the process an AK 47 riffle with breech no. 1977

    A press release which was signed by the Public relations Officer in the state Superintendent Gambo Isa said the arrests was based on a tip off

    He listed those arrested to include: Umar Usman alias “ORI”, aged 45, of Garin Dan –Gambo village, Rugu forest, Safana LGA, alleged to have been terrorizing Safana and Batsari LGAs of Katsina state.

    He said’’ In the course of investigation one AK 47 rifle with breech No. 1977 was recovered in his possession.  Suspect is assisting the police with useful information that may lead to the arrest of other members of his syndicate’’.

    In a related development, the State Command has also announced the recovery of one Ak 47 rifle breech no. 89-11825 with two rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition, a fire wood cutter, one Aliyu Sani, aged 25 of Sabon Layi village, Faskari, who was reported to have been attacked by armed bandits in the forest.

    The release further stated that the Police patrol team was immediately dispatched to the scene and engaged the hoodlums in a gun duel, with the team succeeding in dislodging them and recovering one AK.47 rifle with breech number 89-11825 and two rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition abandoned by the hoodlums.

    Also the Command arrested the duo of Sanusi Sani, aged 30 of Landan-Ketare village, Kankara LGA of Katsina state and one Bello Abdullahi,  aged 30 of the same address, who while armed with dangerous weapons, blocked Tashar Kawu – Unguwar Zaki feeder road, Kankara and robbed one Abbas Halilu, aged 25 of Bada’u village, Kankara of his Techno Handset valued at ten thousand naira  and another unregistered motorcycle Bajaj valued one hundred and eighty thousand naira (180,000:00K) after beating him to a state of coma.

    The release disclosed that In the course of investigation, the suspects confessed to have sold the motorcycle at the cost of one hundred thousand (N100,000:00K) in Kano state, and also  confessed to other series of armed robbery incidents, terrorizing Kankara and its environs.

    The PPPRO assured that all the arrested suspects will be diligently prosecuted in a law court.

     

  • Police confirm release of abducted cleric, others in Katsina

    The Police in Katsina State have confirmed the release of the Kano-based cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Suleiman and five other persons, abducted in Katsina State 12 days ago.

    The state Police Public Relations Officer, Gambo Isa, confirmed the development to the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Katsina.

    He disclosed that Suleiman, a renowned Qur’anic reciter, and other victims, were released at about 4 a.m. on Wednesday.

    Isa said that the victims communicated to their relatives and were later evacuated by the police and reunited with their families.

    The police spokesman said that no ransom was paid to the kidnappers before their release.

    It would be recalled that the cleric and other victims were kidnapped 12 days ago along Sheme to Kankara road, on their way back to Kano State, after attending a religious activity in Kebbi State.

    The Katsina State Police Command on Sunday, revealed that several pre-emptive measures undertaken by the command including increased deployment of Police personnel and equipment as well as regular meetings with community leaders of the Seven Frontline local Government Areas recently threatened by growing insecurity and banditry, paid off in ensuring hitch free elections in the areas

    The Spokesman of the State Command and Superintendent of Police, Gambo Isa, told The Nation during an exclusive interview that those measures proved effective as seen in the outcome of the exercise in the areas

    He said’’ the heads of security Joint task Forces comprising the commissioner of Police, the Brigade Commander 17th Brigade Katsina, 213 forward Operation Base Commander, all visited Batsari and met with all communities’ leaders and Representatives including Majoga and Ajasu that were attacked recently and assured them of their safety and security’’

    ‘’Also there was the deployment of heavy equipment and Armed Personnel and logistics made to forestall any further attack on the communities’’

    Meanwhile investigations by The Nation during the coverage of the elections in the area showed that the exercise went on smoothly in the 7 front line LGAs including Jibia, Safana, Batsari and Sabuwa and so on

    The secretary to Government of the State, Mustapha Muhammad Inuwa has cast his vote at Amadi ‘B’ polling unit in Danmusa, Danmusa Local Government.

    The SGS who arrived the polling both around 12 noon was accredited and issued with 3 ballot papers by the Presiding officer to vote Candidates of his choice. There was massive turn out of both males and females electorates in Danmusa Local Government.

    Similarly, the SGS Mustapha Muhammad Inuwa has expressed his happiness over the peaceful conduct of the elections in the front line Local Governments in the state.

    Mustapha Muhammad Inuwa who also monitored the exercise in Danmusa, Kankara, Faskari and Dandume LGs said Government has taken decisive measures to ensure that people of the affected areas were not disfranchise by the activities of kidnappers and armed bandits. He reiterated the commitments of Governor Masari led Administration to end the heinous crimes in the same way cattle rustling became history in the state.

    At Gidan Ruwa, Korea kudu and Nuhu model primary polling booths in kankara electorates commended INEC for making for making adequate arrangements for a hitch free exercise.

  • Gunmen kill father, abduct daughter in Katsina

    Unknown gunmen on Tuesday shot and killed one Alhaji Nasiru Maimasara before kidnapping his daughter at Gachi quarters in Kankia Local Government Area of Katsina State.

    Sources told the News Agency of Nigeria, that the incident occurred at about 2 a.m., on Tuesday.

    “When the gunmen invaded the area, they started shooting sporadically, while moving to the victims’ residence at Gachi quarters,” the source told our Reporter, pleading anonymity.

    “The bandits shot the victim when he attempted to run, and went away with his daughter.

    “The victim was later taken to Kankia General Hospital where he was confirmed dead,” the source said.

    Meanwhile, Maimasara’s corpse has been buried, while the house was filled with sympathizers when a our Reporter  arrived there at noon.

    Mr Gambo Isa, spokesman of the Police Command in Katsina, who confirmed the incident, described it as unfortunate.

    Isa said that the command was making efforts to apprehend the bandits.

    “We have deployed personnel from the State Investigation Bureau (SIB), and Federal Special Anti Robbery Squad(FSARS) to track down the culprits,”.

  • Police arrest girl, 19, for drugging Okada rider

    The Police Command in Katsina State has announced the arrest of a 19-year-old girl, Zinatu Abubakar,who allegedly drugged a commercial motorcycle operator and attempted to snatch his motorcycle.

    A statement signed by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Gambo Isa, made available to newsmen on Thursday in Katsina, said the suspect belonged to a syndicate operating in the state.

    Isa said the suspect drugged a motorcyclist, Gide Wada, who was conveying her from Kofar-Kaura to Sokoto Rima Quarters in Katsina metropolis.

    The police spokesman said Wada had to park his motorcycle when he started becoming drowsy after he ate a piece of chocolate the suspect gave to him as they were moving to her destination.

    According to him, it was after the victim parked the motorcycle that he became unconscious and the suspects’ accomplices,one Abubakar and Chairman, now at large, attempted to snatch the motorcycle.

    He explained that the accomplices ran into the bush when the condition of the motorcyclist attracted the attention of people nearby, who apprehended Zinatu and handed her over to the police.

    Isa claimed that the suspect had confessed to have been committing such offence in Kaduna and Kano states, adding that the police were on the trail of her accomplices.

    He advised Okada riders and commercial drivers not to take food from people they know nothing about, so as not to become victims of robbery.

  • Step-father defiles 7-month-old baby in Katsina

    A 55-year-old man, Magaji Dansale, has allegedly defiled his seven-months-old step daughter in Marmachi village of Musawa Local Government Area, Katsina State.

    The mother of the baby, Zeenat Muntari, told newsmen that she separated with the father of the baby and married Dansale.

    The mother said that she was suspecting that she drunk some substances that made her to sleep for several hours, the situation which paved way for her husband to allegedly commit the act.

    According to her, when she woke up to breastfeed the baby, she noticed blood in her private part.

    “I informed my husband about the matter; he started weeping saying that some people will start accusing him.

    “In the morning, while I was washing the baby’s clothes, he also brought his trouser for me wash and I noticed blood stains on it.

    “He later went to bush and brought me some leaves to treat her, saying that it is pile.

    “The baby was later taken to Malumfashi General Hospital where the doctor confirmed to us that she was defiled and informed the police.

    “I am suspecting him because it is only me and him in the house when the incident happened,’’ she said.

    NAN reports that the baby was later referred to Turai Yar’adua Maternal and Child Hospital, Katsina.

    When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Gambo Isa, confirmed the incident and said that the police would brief the media on Friday.
